Every kid i knew had those things when i was a kid. They would beep and disturb the classes, so the teachers hated them.
You can actually get a Android/iOS game where you get the first four generations or so "virtualized", so they actually emulate the firmware of the unit. It is like having the real thing, for free. Also it is annoying. But interesting.
Edit: Actually, google Tamagotchi L.i.f.e, it is a free app they released in 2013, but it seems they turned it into a paid one.
