I don't like the standard android alarms. I have used Alarm Clock Xtreme for many years. It overrides the standard volume. I especially love that I can set the allowed number of snooze and the different methods to snooze or dismiss. I have mine set to allow 3 snoozes of 10 minutes, then require I solve 2 math problems before it will dismiss.

I have trouble waking up too.
I currently use the Alarm Clock Xtreme app on my phone (it's free). You can set it so you have to solve a maths problem or enter a captcha style thing to switch it off. It can also limit the number of times you can hit snooze.
If the problem is that you just don't hear it, then you could look at an under pillow vibrator style alarm clock.
If daylight wakes you up, then there are daylight alarm clocks; these slowly turn on a bright light to simulate dawn.

I use this. Lets me use a playlist of favorite songs on random. It's like having a personal radio station without the wacky morning deejays or commercials. I've never woken up happier.

I had the exact same problem with that exact model phone and alarm app except it wasn't audible it was Google play music.
It appears to be android only but I'm pretty sure the math problem thing can be found on some IOS apps.
Another nice feature is that the chosen alarm song or sound can be started at a very low volume and rises the longer you wait to dismiss it. This makes for a less jarring up-an-at-'em.

I don't know of an alarm that would do exactly that, but Alarm Clock Xtreme has options to do things like mathematical computations before stopping. There is a new option that is rather neat. It requires you to scan a bar code or QR code before you can wake up.
I use it to scan the bar code on one of my vitamin bottles. I have to start with my first daily activity before it'll shut up.
I've never had a problem, but I use a great 3rd party app (alarm clock xtreme) and I've excluded it from all the power saving.

It's a solid tool. Now that I've gotten used to the timers and stopwatch on there as well, it's all the better.

I'm on Android and I use alarm clock xtreme (stupid name, but it's actually really good and free). I have it set up so I have to do math to snooze, and enter a captcha to dismiss. Usually I try snoozing, but after I'm done with the two math problems, my brain is too awake to go back to sleep, so I enter the captcha to turn it off, which wakes me up more

If you have an android device, there's an app called Alarm Clock Xtreme. Adjusted to the most merciless settings, it does not stop blaring until you solve ten or so tough math problems like three digit multiplications and so on.
Also, have one thing in the morning that you really look forward to. In my case, I love breakfast and I love eating breakfast foods. It could be anything- a mug of hot chocolate or a piece of some sweet you like, or going on a run or reading your favorite blog, basically, make an association with that thing to waking up, so that waking up becomes imperative and exciting in order for you to have your indulgence. - 1. Being woken up abruptly by loud noise will pretty much kill your dream recall. I would strongly recommend getting a more advanced alarm clock as soon as possible.
My personal favorite is this android app.
Arguably the best feature is that you can set the volume of the alarm to slowly fade in over the course of a few minutes.
- 2. MILD (Mnemonically Induced Lucid Dream) is a technique to help you become lucid. It doesn't really improve your dream recall, as far as I know.
I believe the best and most reliable way of improving your dream recall is keeping a dream journal /voice-record your dreams and then regularly going back and analysing them.
- 3. I guess compared to most other activities in life, lucid dreaming probably requires very little active effort.
If you record your dreams everyday and do ~20 (conscious) RCs per day (not(!) 20 different ones of course, can be the same RC), you're already investing more time than most other lucid dreamers do.
It's not really about investing a lot of time every day. It's about investing a very, very small amount of time every day, but keep doing it for the next few months /years.

I use this alarm app which requires me to solve a math question before it will shut off. Having to figure out what 27+38 is right after I wake up guarantees I'm actually awake by the time I can get it to shut up!
There's an app called 'Alarm Clock Xtreme' on the google play store, I use it myself. Here's the link.
It allows you set a snooze time of up to 60 minutes and you can configure a variety of ways to reset the snooze timer or turn off the alarm completely.
For example, my configuration currently is like this: When the alarm rings, shaking the device (a smartphone, in my case) stops the alarm and starts a timer to ring again in 10 minutes. This goes on forever. If I want to stop the alarm completely, I have to solve 3 simple math problems (to prove I'm in fact awake).

You can set different degrees of maths problems difficulties, Captchas, Shake device etc...

I have no idea if it's the best out there for the purpose, but Alarm Clock Xtreme Free +Timer does the job.
It can shut itself off after a while and also can do a configurable "crescendo". It can be turned off, but you can disable snoozing and configure it to only accept being being turned off if you do a captcha or solve a math problem.
Don't know of a way in the native clock app. However, I use Alarm Clock Xtreme due to other features and it does have a toggle for routing sound through headphones. I have not tested that functionality but it may do what you are looking for.

Been using alarm clock exterme for many years now, heavy sleeper and tired during the morning. Got nice features like solve a Math problem before the alarm turning off.
Does have ads though, but at like €3 for no more ads it's not an issue IMO.
"Alarm Clock Xtreme" was my solution to this. It requires you to solve math problems to turn the alarm off, and includes a lot of customization options for how snooze works. I have an old, loud plug-in alarm clock that I keep on the opposite side of the room that I call my "hard alarm" that is set to go off as a last resort in the case of excess snoozing or if the alarm app fails for some reason.

Not perfect but it would suffice with a bit of a workaround.
Unfortunately their quick alarms are semi-useless but you can adjust an existing alarm in about the same time as it would take to set up a brand new one. Labels are as simple as tapping the bit that says "Standard alarm" and editing the text. The alarm sounds are customizable so you can set different ones for regular events like taking meds or leaving the house. I like using emojis in my labels because the symbols mean that it's one less task to drain my executive function and it helps me maintain a routine for when I need to 💊Take meds💊 or 🚗Leave the house🚗 etc.
In fact having alarms pre-labeled for regular events then it would be quicker than using a quick alarm because all you would need to do is to adjust the time it's set for.
What's really useful to me with the app is the wake-up check function - you can set your alarm to be dismissed and then you can be prompted in x mins to dismiss an "I'm awake" reminder or your alarm goes off again.
This works really well for me with medication because if I have a 2 hour window of time for taking my afternoon dose of meds, I can set an alarm with 4x 30 min snoozes and if I dismiss it and I'm about to take my meds but then I go looking for my water bottle and get distracted by a phone call and then notice that the washing machine is done... you know this story... I will get a prompt asking me if I'm "awake" or it will go off again and remind me that I need to take my meds and bring me back to my original task.

I have long wanted an app that does exactly this. Setting alarms simply doesn't meet the need because it can't be set for a point in the the future (beyond this day / week).

For anyone that can never get up in the mornings and have multiple alarms I HIGHLY recommend getting an alarm that requires you to scan a barcode. I use this app on Android. I paid for it but any app that has that feature will do the trick. My alarm goes off at 6am and is LOUD and it requires me to scan the barcode for my box of cereal on top of my fridge. There isn't a way to snooze or mute it from my understanding.

I use Alarm Clock Xtreme. It has a feature where you can have an alarm auto-dismiss after x amount of seconds. It would probably work for your purpose. You could just set an alarm at the time you want and have it dismiss itself after five seconds or whatever.

Some time ago, I used "Alarm Clock Xtreme" , which, besides making you solve math problems to snooze/dismiss, was able to select a random song from a folder, so it was always a surprise.
The inconvenience is that it was only local files, so you had to transfer your mp3s to your phone. Not sure if there has been any significant updates in this regard in the last couple of years.

Alarms can be individually configured to require that you scan a bar code (on your toothpaste tube, for example), or solve an automatically generated math problem(s) (select from five 5 levels of difficulty), QR/barcode, password, shaking the phone, etc.
I've got a terrible habit of "borrowing from tomorrow" (ie. going to bed with barely enough time to fall asleep, let alone get a good night's rest, before I'm supposed to wake up). I'm also unfortunately able to turn off just about any alarm or series of alarms in my sleep (Like, 4 different devices with different ways of turning them off, set up in repeating sequence in 1 minute intervalls, with a second sequence half an hour later, that's about a 50/50 shot for getting me out of bed when I'm really fucking tired). This thing though? Works great, you can set it up to force you to do (simple) calculations in order to snooze it or turn it off, I like it a lot.
Of course, at this point, having used it for a couple months, I've started developing a resistance to it and found myself solving the damn calculations without waking up, but it still works better than just about anything else, especially if I combine it with a couple different other alerts that confuse me enough in my sleep-addled state to force my brain to wake up.

It has an option that makes it so you cannot shut off the alarm unless you first solve a mathematics problem (of configurable difficulty). In my experience, once you're awake enough to figure out what 39+48 is, you're awake enough not to fall asleep again without meaning to.
I use Alarm Clock Xtreme, and it has a 'Skip Next' option you can hit to just skip one instance of a scheduled alarm.
I'm not an expert at this but I think the most important thing is that you are active throughout your day very tired when you go to sleep, because I've had times where I woke up in the middle of the night then tried to go to sleep paralysis and I just couldn't. Instead I was in sort of half-awake half-asleep state for like an hour and I eventually got bored of it and just went back to sleep.
And I think the less you move after waking up the better. I use this THIS app, so the alarm turns itself off.
Idk about the last part. Sometimes the alarm wakes me up in the middle of a dream then I just re-imagine that same dream and I'm lucid. Also you could try to go to sleep paralysis. But I haven't had any success with this so far. One time I got scarred because the vibrations were too strong and I forced myself to wake up.

Download this alarm app on your phone. Make it so that you have to do math in the morning to turn your alarm off.
Get a long ass phone charging cable and make it a habit to plug your phone in before bed.
I used to sleep through alarms. Now I use that app and do not sleep through, because it is relentless. Also if I make the math hard enough I get pissed at it and that helps wake me up.

Set it so you have to solve 10 medium difficulty math questions to cancel or snooze it.

Don't know how Reddit feels about Alarm Clock Xtreme Free (Google Play link because I'm too lazy to search, but despite the terrible name, I've used it for years with no complaints. It works great, gives you options the stock clock app doesn't, and has been my go to alarm, stopwatch and timer for so long I don't remember using anything else. Try that instead, and as always, throw the developers a bone if you end up liking it.

Xtreme alarm clock! You can set it so you have to answer maths problems of varying difficulty before it snoozes or switches off. Diabolical (and if you have roommates, they'll hate you), but it's pretty hard to sleep through.
A lot of people telling you how to do something else, but yes this is an annoying thing. I like some other 3rd party apps that allow you to make the snooze button really large and the dismiss button much smaller and other options like that. If you download a different app just remember to go into your battery settings and then choose that app under the "ignore optimizations" section. It might disable/delay the alarm if you are not plugged in and the phone hasn't moved (Marshmallow's Doze-the stock app is automatically setup this way)

I use an Android app that forces me to solve math problems in order to turn it off; it makes me angry enough while trying to turn it off that I'm wide awake by the time I shut it up.
Before this tried radio alarms and two regular alarm clocks. I would unplug them and remove the batteries in my sleep... even if they were across the room... I think I threw one clock at another one time.
These issues are with the stock clock, yes.
Do you have any particular suggestions? It seems like some of the first results searching for "alarm" have recently made some less-than-desirable changes or are a tad unreliable.

I'm not sure if there's an app with that automation. I would turn it off manually for that day and then turn it back on sometime before the end of the week. The alarm app that came with my phone (LG G Flex) inexplicably stopped working after a few months. It would just decide to snooze itself instead of going off. I switched to Alarm Clock Xtreme and haven't looked back.
You'll have to use an alarm app and not the built in alarm on the phone.
Go to settings>general settings>uncheck use phone speakers and it will play through the external speaker. I just tried it on my S5 and it works.

If you really want to get crafty and make it work with stock alarm, get tasker or a similar app and have it set to a task with something like when the alarm goes off, open music player and play this file You can do some amazing things with the app, though it does have a learning curve to use. Maybe try ITTT which is more user friendly.

I use Alarm Clock Xtreme (on Android) for a couple of features that really help me with this:
- Complex snooze / alarm dismissal -- You customize what it takes to do each task. I set mine to require me to shake the phone for 2 seconds to snooze it (moving this much helps wake me up), and to require me to do math problems (the difficulty level is configurable) to dismiss the alarm.
- Custom and decreasing snooze duration -- I find the snooze irresistible, so this feature lets me limit the damage. I set the first snooze to last 5 minutes, then each subsequent snooze to be 1 minute shorter (down to a minimum of 1 minute per snooze). An alarm every 60 seconds gets annoying enough to get me out of bed.
- Increasing alarm volume -- I hate an alarm that scares me awake, so mine increases to max volume over time.
I've also set up a Sengled Elements smart light bulb to incrementally increase brightness over a few minutes at the same time. If you don't have a smart home hub, there are bulbs that don't require a hub, like this one.

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams
- Before going to bed, STRONGLY believe that you will have an LD. Confidence is key in MILD. Choose a mantra like 'I will have a lucid dream' and,
- Keep repeating it in your head till you die.
There is also VILD.
CANWILD and FILD are the ones you can do without getting out of your bed, but you have to wake up after 4-6 hours of sleep.
Lemme explain. I will provide TL;DR versions of the methods.
Custom Alarm Noise - Wake Induced Lucid Dream
- Download an alarm clock app which auto-dismisses itself. That is to say, turns itself off. An example is 'Alarm Clock: Stopwatch and Timer'. Configure the alarm to turn off after 5 seconds of ringing.
- When you wake up, DON'T DARE to move. Stay completely still.
- When you get dem tingles or tinnitus, roll over or sit up in your dream.
Finger Induced Lucid Dream
- Wake up after 4-6 hours of sleep with any alarm clock.
- Don't think of anything after shutting off the alarm.
- Concentrate on your index and middle finger of either hand. FLEX the fingers. By flexing, I mean just giving the fingers the signal to move, but not actually moving them.
- You might find yourself in a dream within 30 seconds. If you don't, go to sleep as normal. Or do MILD or WILD.

It's not too pretty, but it's pretty good. Set up a math test to stop the alarm if you have a hard time waking up.

What's alarm snooze got to do with WBTB? You don't need snooze for it. But if you got a 'droid, you can try Alarm Clock Xtreme or Stopwatch and Timer, they both allow for setting a custom alarm sound so you can download and pick anything soft enough that suits your needs, they also let you choose for how long the alarm will go off before shutting itself off or snoozing itself.

Was able to try the technique yesterday. I tried doing it over the last 2 weeks and was partially successful with it. I tried doing it on an app called Xtreme alarm clock and was able to get down the relaxation part on my back (only once). Last night I tried using three alarms for an app called alarmy and it woke me up to the point of where I couldn't go back to sleep. It also has an optional math step prerequisite to cancel alarms. I would highly recommend you try downloading it and checking out everything that it's capable of. The reason I'm looking for a better version is because I can no longer type in the minutes (selecting the minutes to change that part of alarms via typing seems to do nothing now). So it's a pain to set minutes 30 minutes away from the default.

The themes are great. I think they could be even better if there were no presets and, instead, users just pick their own colors for everything. So there should then be only one widget that follows the user's color scheme.
I LOVE the minute-hand flip animation! I have never seen an app that does this.
Alarms should have individual names and individual ring tones. It is very helpful to be able to read (and/or hear through the different ring tones that I set) what the alarm is for. I sometimes set MANY one-time alarms that are close to each other (using them as timed reminders), and having no names loses this precious potential.
"Do you want to exit application?" This is not needed (or at least give it an on/off option in the settings). Pressing the back button on accident is extremely rare, and can always be reversed quickly by the multitask button. I need to get to the next app quickly, so pressing Back, but then seeing the popup and having to think about it and move my finger up to "Yes" is a big turnoff for my time/efficiency.
"Ring only every X# weeks" would rock!
"Alarm Volume" should say "The maximum loudness of the alarm" (otherwise it is a bit confusing as it could possibly mean how loud the alarm starts if gentle wakeup is on).
Some other users might prioritize alarm apps that can set an individual gentle wakeup per alarm.
I can see this app dominating the Play Store if it gives many more individual alarm features. I highly recommend you study AVG Labs' Alarm Clock Xtreme. If you can cover its features and also add some that it doesn't have (like #5 above), I would buy a paid version of your app right away. It's very hard to find an alarm app that can do all these things.

I think that you can choose a different sound for each alarm and have it fade in.
