I agree, Swordigo is one of the best games I've ever played. I first played it years ago on iOS, and then again on Android. If you enjoyed that game, you might also like Sword of Xolan and Crashlands.
Been playing a lot of Sword of Xolan. Fun little platformer, pretty bare bones but very polished. It's free and there's no P2W aspect. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Alper.SwordOfXolan
App Name: Sword of Xolan
Description: Retro styled platform game. Got nice music too!

I personally have been enjoying "Sword of Xolan" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Alper.SwordOfXolan&hl=en The controls are not ideal. But not sure what you can expect for android :S
We are developing a Rogue Legacy-esque game for mobile and one of our challenges was create a virtual gamepad that works fine for this kind of fast paced games with a ton of platforming and sword combat.
We found Sword of Xolan (try it, is free and awesome!) and we fall in love with its visuals, gameplay and superb controls. There're another games with virtual controllers that actually works on mobile?

Here's a couple of platformers which are pixel art and similar gameplay ideas, so might interest you?

It's a very good free action platformer game. The only in app purchase is the Ad removal options. The ads are few and not invasive at all. At the end of each chapter you have a "challenging" boss fight (not so easy to clear at first try). Very good game If you like the genre.
Not sure if I'd call it a time waster... but crap man I'm invested in it... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Alper.SwordOfXolan&hl=en I honestly want to promote the crap out of this game (it's not mine nor do I know the person), but I really am inspired to make a game of a similar nature... and I genuinely love this game! Killed many an hour playing it though.
Games like Sword Of Xolan ?
List made using List My Apps
You don't have to be a jerk. If you're around my age, 34, then we probably do have similar definitions of gaming.
I honestly don't know what you're doing on an android gaming thread if you have such disdain for it. But you're missing out on some great games with that attitude.
Me? I love platformers. Not a huge fan of shmups but Contra was always a favorite whether I was playing with a friend or by myself and trying to see how far I could get without 30 lives at the start —pretty far, if I remember correctly, I think I probably beat it by myself the first time using the konami code.
Anyway, I digress. I said I'm a platformer man, so my list is skewed toward those. I hope you learn something about Android gaming.
Sword Of Xolan. This is an old school platformer, refined for mobile. While not Nintendo Hard, it's got just enough frustration to keep you going. With the inclusion of 4 secrets per 30 levels, it's great for 100 per centers too.
Mini Dash. You will die a lot, but not because of the controls. It's frenetic and crazy gameplay. Gives a Sonic crossed with Mario and Earthworm Jim vibe.
Space Expedition. Very short (like an hour) cinematic pixel art experience.
Magic Rampage. Great little platformer with a projectile weapon scheme. Modern vector graphics if you're tired of the pixel art scene.
Cally's Cave 3. These controls are probably the loosest I'm mentioning. It amounts to a slight learning curve, but very fun once you get into it.
Stealth Bastard. Actually it's on the humblebundle store. You get a steam key and Android apk. This is a fast stealthgame with very tight controls. Can be brutal, but a blast.
Terraria. This one, people might argue with me, but I find the controls very nice and fluid. It has most of the pc content up to 1.2. An update that includes fishing and mine carts is getting closer as I type.
Leo's Fortune. Slick modern platformer. You won't think about onscreen controls at all, you'll just fucking play, man.
Castle of Illusion. AAA graphics and controls that work just like they should. Now if they'd do a Sega version remake, we'd all be fat and happy.
Mage Gauntlet, Wayward Souls. My benchmark for top down/isometric games. Wayward Souls is slightly better, eschewing digital buttons for a swipe based attack/defense. Note: the awesomeness happens with the proswipe setting. I forget if that's the default.
Galaxy Siege 2. Fantastic shmup. Not usually a fan of this genre but the controls just work. No lag, you're maneuvering like a champ (tho to be fair, there's not a whole lot of space in which to maneuver).
Amoebattle. An rts that is more old school rather than Clash of Clans. It has a good control scheme to select and send (and fight) troops. Very natural.
Shufflepuck Cantina. Amazing gameplay, very fun and natural air hockey mechanics. Good graphics set in a G rated Eis Mosley type bar. 2 player same screen gameplay included!
Beach Buggy Racing. I've played all the kart Android games, including the Sonic ones. This has, hands down the best handling. The iaps aren't as bad as say the Angry Birds racing game, but it's ridiculous that multiplayer is an iap. But this is about controls and they rock.
Momonga Pinball. Pinball platformer. Not as quickpaced as say Sonic Spinball, but a nice...spin on the platform genre.
Honorable mentions that aren't stellar but arent frustrating and the gameplay makes up for it:
Spoiler Alert. A platformer played backwards. You start at the last level. The timing can be a bit off.
Dragon Fantasy. It should be as smooth as Mage Gauntlet, but it's not. I prefer the on-screen NES buttons on this one. Very fun FF3 style rpg with a big over world.
The Last Door: Collector's Edition. A point and click adventure. Mostly you'll be able to navigate where you mean to. Can be a little off, but great atmosphere, especially for pixel art.
Grim Fandango. Oh, how I wanted this game to be smooth. The PC version is still better, but you have Manny Calavera on your phone! It's worth the little niggles.
These games are just natural for a touchscreen:
Ski Safari 1 and 2. Only auto runners ive enjoyed (tho I should mention the Rayman games are very well done with their controls, just not my preferred genre)
Jack Lumber. It's Fruit Ninja but with skill. Actually it's more enjoyable story-wise and gameplay is streets ahead of Fruit Ninja.
Zombie Smash. I know. It's a Zynga game. It's not that bad. You get to flick and smash zombies with your finger! Super natural controls.
Kingdom Rush 1,2 and 3. You couldn't place turrets more precisely with a mouse.
Tiny Thief. A point and click adventure done adorably right. The pricing model sucks, it was premium when it first came out. Now each episode is 2 bucks, but I think it's still worth it.
Cut The Rope (all of them) Never has there been such a natural and fun touch screen control system.
Rèpublique. Point and click controls, smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy.
Limbo. Admittedly not that far into it yet, but so far it's controlled just as great as on the PC version.

Well I don't know about Mario specifically, but my favorite platformer is are Sword of Xolan. The controls were just so much smoother to me than other platformers I've played. Also Limbo is really good.
And in looking for responses to this question I found this which has a bunch of games I've never even heard of, but look cool.
Sword of Xolan is very similar to Swordigo and I enjoyed both games.
