This is extremely unlikely. In the best case with those in store readers you might get 10cm. Typically you'd get less.
If you'd like to try it, next purchase hold the card a couple cm from the reader and see if it will work.
The more interesting issue with tap is that I can walk by you at the mall and read your CC number out of your wallet/purse.
If you want to see what the card returns then install an app on your phone and scan your own card.
I have the paid version of this app on my phone and it works reasonably well. I don't think it provides an interpretation of the CVM list, though, as it's encoded in different ways depending on what kind of card it is. However, I believe it does show the raw bytes of it for some networks, so if one had the EMVco contactless specs open for reference they could figure it out. (And I think it assumes no CVM required, so I'm not sure it'd be helpful for e.g. Visa where it requires the terminal to let the card know what it supports for any CVM info to be listed.)
Also, it only shows the global AID's info for debit cards, too, but that tends to be the more important one anyway.
Can you please explain how you attached your debit card to NFC? I tried looking it up and found this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard&hl=en_GB
The comments state that its working but Im not too comfortable giving my card details to a third party.
I'm in UK and Android pay is not yet available here yet.
They can just pass your pocket and scan details from it. You can even do it using a shitty android phone for fun. But they've probably got better equipment which allows longer range
Edit: for fun as in on your own cards using something like this use with caution, doesn't seem to request internet access which is a good start
I'm on Android Galaxy S8, installed this app and sure enough it reads up the long number and expiry when pushed against the back of my phone, just as the point of sale devices must... even gives all the techy hex code detail! Whilst the app is expecting a card, i'm sure it would tell you there's "life" inside the vinyl, whilst maybe not making any sense of what it's saying... keeping my eyes out for anyone saying they've tried and destroyed this idea. :D
That's not true. Any card reader (including any phone) can get the card number and expiry date if the attacker can get close enough to your wallet.
As an example check this app and try it on your card https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard
Maybe you can't outright steal it, but you can get the full card number and expiry printed on the card, and sometimes cardholder name wirelessly. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard

The NFC chip used by Google Pay is on the bottom 1/3rd of the phone (Most phones have it at the top)..
I use it all the time (Google Pay), just hold the bottom back of the phone near the terminal..
You can get an app from the play store to test the NFC on your phone easily if you have any credit/debit cards with the tap to pay (aka nfc chip in them). Try using this app Credit Card Reader NFC (EMV) it will read the card info when you tap the back bottom of the phone.
If you have an android touch your card with this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard&hl=en
The app doesn't have internet privileges so it can't be used [easily] to scam you.
With my card it pulls the most recent transaction history, expiry, cc #.
On Android: "Credit Card Reader NFC (EMV)" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard&hl=en
This is what I see when I scan my debit card (obviously I removed my card number etc)
You can use Credit Card Reader on another phone or tablet to receive the number by NFC.
I often use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard
Yes this would be possible, take a look at this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard
This might work. Never tried it, though.

And no, you need to be in at least 1cm proximity to the card, thats as far as nfc goes.
From what I've read, more and more banks are issuing cards without rfid. Try read your RFID card with this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard
> Your chip (contactless or conventional) can't be skimmed
You are way off. Any one can steal your info and view your transactions with something as simple as an app- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard&hl=en
Fun fact, you can read the number off the Chicago transit cards with the nfc reader on your phone. I've been using this app but there are tons of others out there https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.devnied.emvnfccard
