The author mentions CloudPlayer but doubleTwist also has a truly local player also called doubleTwist.
Reasons I like prefer doubleTwist:
ALAC support
Podcasts right in the app
Android Auto integration
AirPlay support
Chromecast support
iTunes Sync
Music file tag editor
I'm pretty sure some of these features are paid only, but at this point I forget which ones.
doubleTwist Player ships with free Android Auto support. I'm the co-founder of the team that built the app so if you give it a try let me know what you think.
Take a look at the free version of doubleTwist Player which comes with a built-in podcast manager. I'm the co-founder so feel free to send me your feedback as we're continuously improving the app.
doubleTwist Player comes with free lossless support for FLAC and ALAC so you may want to check it out. I'm the co-founder.
Also check out the newly revamped doubleTwist Player. The free version is feature-rich out of the box and there's an in-app upgrade available for power users. I'm the co-founder of the team behind the app and we're updating it regularly.
You can find all the features you listed in the free version of the new doubleTwist Player. The custom lock screen and theme configuration options are in the Settings. We are a small team in Austin, Texas and have been making Android apps since the early days of the OS.
You may want to check out the free version of doubleTwist. It's frequently updated and makes use of all the latest Android APIs under the hood. I'm the co-founder of the team behind the app.
We support 24-bit ALAC in both the free and paid versions of doubleTwist Player so feel free to give it a try. Both versions come with support for tag editing.
The free doubleTwist Player comes with built-in podcast functionality and a comprehensive podcast directory. It's not super fancy but powerful enough for the majority of folks and we're constantly updating the app. I'm the co-founder so if you have any questions, I'm here to help.
You can stream to HomePod using doubleTwist. We've supported AirPlay on Android since 2011. You can use the app to AirPlay local songs as well as podcasts and radio. Happy to send you a free unlock code. I'm the co-founder :)
The free version of doubleTwist Player supports FLAC and doesn't use Android's cookie cutter audio engine. While we do have a small number of ads in the non-music parts of the app, they are limited to radio and podcasts, so if you use the app just to listen to music you won't even see them :)
doubleTwist Player writes all metadata edits to the files. And it's part of the free feature set so you don't need to upgrade to take advantage of it.
You can just drag and drop the files onto the device like any other USB stick or external hard drive.
If you want sync software check out doubletwist- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer&hl=en
I guess I didn't know that Spotify had podcasts to begin with.
I use doubleTwist Music Player to manage my podcast subscriptions. I have the option to download or stream directly through the app. It works great, but only has up to the last 200 most recent podcasts.
Same. I switched to iTunes to buy music, and synchronize my playlists back to my android phone using the DoubleTwist app.
It lets me create my own playlists, and store music offline which is handy for camping and roadtrips.
It's a tad inconvenient having to go back to iTunes and sync but I refuse to subscribe to yet another streaming service when I already have three different video streaming services.
I haven't used iTunes since the video iPod. I hear good things about doubletwist, supposedly let's you sync to iTunes like an iPhone. Not sure how close it is to what you want.
You could check out the free version of doubleTwist Player. You can activate the built-in custom lock screen in the Settings. I'me the co-founder so if you give it a go, I welcome feedback.
We have this in the Pro version of doubleTwist Player which has a proprietary audio engine. I'm the co-founder and happy to send you an unlock code if you want.
We support wma in doubleTwist Player but you may need to manually add the folder where they are stored to your library by using the "Scan Local Folder" option in Settings if they don't get indexed automatically.
The free version of doubleTwist Player lets you view artists by Album Artist or Track Artist. It also has an option for a custom lock screen. I'm the co-founder. If you like it, message me and I'll send you an unlock code for the Pro upgrade.
The free version of doubleTwist Player has recently been completely revamped and does everything you're looking for. I'm the co-founder of the team developing the app and we're continuously improving it.
Yes it is a little laggy. It's pretty feature rich though with podcasts, Chromecast and airplay. A lot going on. Maybe too much haven't checked its memory usage.
I use it instead of TuneIn and iHeartRadio when possible, compared to those lag is tolerable. BTW I am in the double twist beta. That is really nice. Has local music, podcast, radio, video player and Chromecast(paid feature). Pretty quick. Wish it had add url like audials.
Edit: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
I use doubletwist and couldn't be happier, it auto syncs when connected to WiFi, and of course the app on the computer had to be on. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
Their is one down side though, you will have to pay for the air sync as well, but I haven't regretted the payment yet (Google analytics helps allot, since it's free then!)!
I was looking for that, I have the doubleTwist app for my android phone, and it's got podcasts I can subscribe to. I searched for Game Master's Journey, and the app has an entry for it and a little tagline to go with it, but no episodes. I can just dl the podcasts from your website of course, but I like using this app, was just wondering if that was something you had to like, authorize them to offer or something (I don't know how this stuff works).

Not OP, but I use doubleTwist. I think I've encountered a few bugs with updating playlists, but it does a good job of getting all my iTunes music on my phone.
DoubleTwist isn't too bad. Has podcasts as well. They even have a dedicated iTunes sync option. Though, I believe that function cost.
DoubleTwist has been around forever and hasn't let me down. Simple enough UI to understand and has Podcasts as a bonus. Core features are free, extras will cost a couple of bucks.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer&hl=en
Install this on both your Mac and your phone. Makes syncing possible. Looks great too. Bonus feature: also supports wireless streaming with Apple TV.
We have this in doubleTwist Player. When you go to Albums screen and press the floating Shuffle button, it'll shuffle by album. This is a basic feature and part of the free app, so you don't need to upgrade.
I know DoubleTwist has been able to do this for a while, but I haven't used it in ages and I don't know if there's anything better now.
You could also look into file sync apps too, especially if you already have a music app you like.
Have you tried the free version of doubleTwist Player? You can control bookmarking in the Settings so that it remembers your playback position. I'm the co-founder of the team that developed the app.
Have you tried the revamped doubleTwist Player? It has a custom audio engine, supports all major formats including lossless, and we're constantly updating it. I'm the co-founder.
If you want to test any of the premium features for free, like EQ or casting, try downloading the trial version of CloudPlayer instead. It shares the same audio engine as doubleTwist Player and comes with a 30-day free trial.
You may want to check out the podcast section in doubleTwist Player. It's free and not complicated. It also gives you the option to configure the default start screen so that the app always launches directly into the podcast section. I'm the co-founder of the team that created the app.
There's app called Doubletwist that you can download. There's a setting in it to make it use the SD Card. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
On the PC you download the app called DoubleTwist Sync. It will sync your Itunes Library to your phone's SD Card. https://www.doubletwist.com/desktop
The free version of doubleTwist Player supports Opus so you may want to give it a try. I'm the co-founder of the team behind the app.
If your Opus files don't get auto-indexed by the media scanner, go to Settings and use the "Scan Local Folder" feature to manually trigger a scan.
We've tested our top two apps (CloudPlayer and doubleTwist Classic) with 25K tracks without running into any issues. The free version of doubleTwist is sufficient for what you're looking for. Frankly all top developers here on Reddit have apps that should handle this for you so download a couple and see which one you like best in terms of UI, features, etc.
We have a favorites feature in doubleTwist Player. The basic app is free, so you can give it a try and see if you like it.
As far as Samsung's Music player goes, I just searched for it on the Play Store on my Nexus and it wasn't listed there, but it does appear on my Galaxy's Play Store. So it must be that Samsung is limiting it to Samsung-only devices. I'm sure you could download it from other sources, but I wouldn't recommend it.
I literally used to use DoubleTwist media player on Android because it's main image was Plastic Beach (exp edition)/On Melancholy Hill
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer&hl=en
We may add podcast support to CloudPlayer although it has not been decided yet. Our older app, doubleTwist Classic, already has podcasts and we'll be revamping it this summer/fall with a new material design UI, new engine and more.
But if you do it like this, you lose features such as adjustable playback speed, playlist support and I think you won't be able to start a podcast at home and finish it somewhere else.
The only Android app i know which supports native Sonos Streaming (via uPNP) is DoubleTwist Player. With the downside that podcast support is very minimal (no playlists, at least last time I checked).
Has this actually been an issue for people? I've owned Android devices for as long I've had a smart phone, and have never had a problem accessing Podcasts through simple apps. Hell, the music app Doubletwist that I've been using for years has not only podcast support, but a built in search guide for finding podcasts based on title alone, rather than needing to search for an RSS or something.
Was this a legitimate problem I somehow skirted by chance?
I've been a big fan of the stock Play Music app for its simplicity and because I can use it with my Chromecast, and I have almost my entire music library uploaded there.
But I have heard the praises sung for doubleTwist by many!
i think doubletwist does this?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
Try
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
this Music Player App has a Setting which normalizes the volume of your tracks.
We support Opus in doubleTwist Player. Opus support is included in the free app so it's easy to test :)
This is the default behavior in doubleTwist Player and the basic app is free, so worth a try. I'm the co-founder.
doubletwist syncs with itunes perfectly.
Out of curiosity have you tried doubletwist? it's supposedly can sync with iTunes just like an iPhone.
If you've got a large iTunes collection (and other stuff integrated into the Apple Ecosystem) then obviously the best way to get it all to "just work" together is to stick with the Apple ecosystem. However, there are several ways to get your iTunes library onto an Android phone.
First is just a straight file transfer, but you said that was giving you some issues. Back when I first converted from iOS to Android (iPhone 3G --> Nexus One) I used DoubleTwist (with AirSync) and it worked great. Maybe give that a try. There's also iSyncr which I haven't used, but looks like it works well.
Otherwise, if you want to go "all-in" with Google, you should probably import your iTunes library to Google Play Music. Then your music library will be stored in the cloud, and can still be downloaded for offline playback on device.
I use doubletwist. Payed for the airsync option. wireless updates. Doubletwist
doubleTwist is the only one that works for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
Ich benutze seit Langem doubleTwist: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer
Tuts auch mit Android Auto, kann mich also nicht beschweren.
My 2 favorite apps for playing music stored locally on the phone are doubletwist and retro music player, both do the same thing.
Transferring the music itself is simple, just connect the phone to your mac (you may need a usb a to usb c cable if your mac doesn't have usb c, as the charger it comes with is double sided usb c) and it will act as a flash drive for you copy everything to a music folder manually.
What about doubleTwist? Simple playing screen like the one Sony use.
Both the free and the premium versions of doubleTwist Player have this as long as you turn it on in the Settings.
Have you tried the free version of doubleTwist Player?
You can always use the free version.
The iPod is an attractive device but just FYI https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer this is a solid app to put your iTunes library on an Android phone.
For local music stored on my phone, I like Doubletwist way better than the stock music players.
doubleTwist is pretty sweet and it syncs with iTunes!
>Is there a way to sync my music to my Android phone via WiFi?
Surely! There are many. A few options...
Some music apps like DoubleTwist allow you to sync music from your Mac or PC to your Android phone over Wifi with the click of a button, or even scheduled syncs if you like.
Google Play Music will sync up to 20,000 songs for you via cloud for free. Even if you're an iTunes user and like managing your music through iTunes, Google Play Music can automatically sync from your iTunes library.
Apps like AirDroid or SuperBeam allow you to easily drag and drop files between your Android phone and your Mac/PC over a Wifi network.
File managers like Solid Explorer allow you to set up various cloud service and network connections to sync files with your Android phone through a number of different avenues. For instance, you could set up an SFTP connection over Wifi with your Mac, giving you easy access to a whole host of files between the two devices.
DoubleTwist is pretty good. As is Shuttle or PowerAmp.
I don't know what exactly it does but maybe DoubleTwist might help you!

Check out DoubleTwist:

>(Tmobile does not charge for streaming music, which is almost certainly violating net neutrality, but that's another discussion).
Actually it doesn't really violate NN, as they offer free streaming to any service that asks. It is not limited to certain partners or whatever, any streaming music service can just ask and T-mobile will exempt them.
You might try out doubleTwist for local music storage management, I find it makes it really easy to swap out music/playlists on the phone storage so it's easier to have variety. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doubleTwist.androidPlayer&hl=en
First thing I thought was "what would double-twist Music player have to do with cameras?"
