Smart Audiobook Player. Not sure it qualifies. I do not personally know of anyone else that used it before I told them about it but then again their Play Store details show "Installs 1,000,000 - 5,000,000" which is by no means an unknown app.
I listen to a lot of audio books and from my time trying different apps, this is hands down the best audio book player app based on ease of use, features, design, etc. The dev is very active and responsive as well. Over the years of using the app I have emailed him a handful of times for issues, feature request or bugs which are usually due to new OS beta's from Google.
When I tried out Android O DP4, this app kept reopening even after force closing it. I emailed the dev and not even 30 mins later he emailed me a beta apk and asked me to test and report back. I tried it out, it fixed the issue and 2 or 3 days later, he pushed the fix to the app store.
If you haven't tried it out yet and like listening to local file audio books, you won't be disappointed IMO.
Including Smart Audiobook Player, my "must have" apps that I always install on a new device are 1: Smart Audiobook Player 2: Solitaire Megapack - Has a ton of fun games and features. The dev releases new games on a pretty regular basis. Paid for the full version years ago and use it daily. 3: Relay Pro - Preferred Reddit client 4: Pocket Casts - Preferred Podcast App 5: Nest & iComfort - To control my AC units from my couch :)
The Hardcore History series has really made me look forward to work the past few weeks.
The best player I've found for spoken audio is Smart Audiobook Player, especially with its rewind function (depending on how long its been paused, it rewinds up to 30 seconds). You can also have it automatically unpause when you reinsert the headset or end a call, adjust playback speed (without changing the pitch), adjust the equalizer, boost volume far beyond source levels, download covers, bind hardware keys etc.
Yes! I love, love, love listening to audiobooks and podcasts on my ~50 minute commute.
It makes the time fly by and I usually learn something interesting from podcasts. If you enjoy reading, you can easily work in an extra dozen or more books into your schedule each year with audiobooks.

You have to come to audiobooks with a bit of aural training, I've found. I listen to a lot of podcasts, so I've gotten used to locking into what I'm listening to. Also, there are some amazing audiobook apps, like Smart Audiobook Player, that make listening so easy.
On Android the Smart Audiobook player is the best.
In my car though, where I normally listen, I far prefer to use my ancient Sandisk Sansa e200 8GB mp3 player, with Rockbox firmware.
I love Smart Audiobook Player it has a ton of features including finding book covers and persistent notification with a sleep timer.

But I don't use that to look them up ... I just have my books sorted by genre, then author. By hand .. but then I don't have 1000's of them.
I think the best for cost is a cheap unlocked Android with 8gb memory, or and expandle SD Card slot.
My favorite app is Smart Audiobook Player, it allows great tracking for large files or books (most important feature, as you Never want to lose your place.)
for example, my copy of game of thrones was a CD rip, its over 1GB, and its broken into chapters by character name, like the hard copy. It's would be a nightmare to keep your place w/o a well designed app.
Also, Having an Android device allows you the option to purchase books directly from your favorite store, or add DRM Free books manually

I've been trying to remedy that by listening to audiobooks as often as I can (on my commute, when doing housework, etc.). Audible is pretty awesome with their giant library, but if you end up with your own audiobook files you want to listen to (usually mp3 or m4a/m4b files), I highly recommend Smart Audiobook Player. It's great at remembering where you are in a book (even if you're bouncing between several in your "library"), and has quick jump forward/backward 20sec/1min buttons (for when you realized you spaced out), which are both features I found lacking in earlier apps, and the lack of which ultimately discouraged me from listening to long audiobooks before I started using the app.

It uses the gyro in your phone, and you can set it for multiple intervals. Then it starts to taper off, if you're asleep great, if you're not, you just bump it, and DING! continues at full volume.
I use it and every morning just go back 1 interval.
I know of nothing without breaking the DRM on the books and reading them as MP3s or M4Bs. Then I recommend Smart Audiobook Player
Unfortunatley I don't think me advising you or anyone else on how to break DRM would be welcome in this semi-official subreddit. Suffice it to say if you google around you can find out.

This combines the best of all offline audiobook players IMHO.
I discovered this app when trying to figure out how to adjust the low/high frequencies even more than what my vehicle could handle (epecially with low quality audiobooks from OverDrive), and this app made it more acceptable.
Most of the app feature are free, but some, such as the equalizer, are 'pro' (but cheap). The free version allows you to try the pro features for 30 days, so you can easily judge if it makes a difference.

I use Smart Audiobook Player. Its a decent player it recognizes my cover art and it has settings that let you set it to turn off if it doesn't detect movement in a certain amount of time in case you fall asleep.
Well, VLC is a video player mostly. I would use Mx Player on Android for that.

Most books need to be listened to at 20-30% increase in speed. There are very few books have I listened to which required more (none) or less (one or two) than that standard range. I think audiobook narrators have a standard to try to reach an average words per minute so the average person can listen and comprehend what they're saying. I think the standard should be raised 20% since I have to go to almost every book to increase the narration speed to 20, 25, or 30% faster, depending on the narrator.
Anyway, I answered your survey at 1.25 speed since that's the closest average for my listening.
On Android, Smart AudioBook Player is the best third-party app for listening to audiobooks. You can fine-tune playback speed like on Audible (though only in tenths, not twentieths like Audible, and my normal setting there is 1.2x since you can't make it the .05 faster, and 1.3x is sometimes too fast), make bookmarks, set sleep timer. Pretty much everything Audible can do, but it works with audiobooks from any source, including Audible if you download it to your device. I just congregate all my audiobooks and almost exclusively use Smart AudioBook Player.

If you are on an Android device I recommend SmartAudioBook Player. This app is free to use but after 30 days you can pay a one time fee of 2 bucks to keep the advanced features.

Would love to see some official Plex support for Audiobooks. However, I've been a longtime user of Smart AudioBook Player on Android, and it has so many great features, that it's hard to imagine using anything else. The only thing it's missing is a Plex-like cloud solution. I use Audible too, but I hate having to use Audible's player since it lacks so many features that I am used to.

You must not be using a decent audio book player; you should be able to handle this easily. Here is a typical android app for this.
You don't need an mp3 player. You can do the same thing on your phone. Transfer it to an mp3 or any other audiobook file and use Smart Audiobook Player. Or any other audiobook player that you prefer. With the price of phones these days, I encourage people to do anything they can with the phone they spend so much money on.

I have this one for my non-Audible books. Gives you the full version for 30 days to test it and then it switches to a basic mode. It's only 2 bucks so I just payed for the full version after some use.
It has a sleep timer for "when the phone isn't shaken for some time" which can go as long as 90 minutes. If it goes to sleep you can also just shake the phone and it continues.
There's also a force stop for when you listen to a boom for extend periods of time (up to 4h and can also be turned off).

Decompiling is really quite simple.
You need apktool, and then the command is simply apktool d nameof.apk.
Now you have the smali code, you can recompile your app with apktool b nameof/.
I personally use jadx to view the Java code, find which section I want to modify and then modify the Smali. Tbh it's mostly pretty easy to use.
In saying that, I only modify apps for myself, if you want I can try and help you via PM when I get some time. We can modify Smart Audiobook Player to unlock the premium features (if it still works, haven't tried that app for a few years)
You haven't said what platform you want to play your audiobook on. I use Smart Audiobook Player on my Android. I use a two way sync for my books from my OneDrive account. New books auto download and import. The read position data is uploaded back to my OneDrive so when I use another device (like my cars android head unit) the read position is still in sync.

I have no connection to the developers, but I really love this app and I share it as often as I can lol. It's one of those apps which truly embraces the power of Android.
Smart AudioBook Player has this functionality, under "More" > "History". A complete history of all user interactions with the audiobook, maintained for each book. Accidentally skipped forward by dragging the progress bar? It's there, and indicated with a finger icon, time you did it and time of the audiobook position. Paused it? It's there. Pressed play or seek forward? It's there. Really can't recommend the app enough.
I've been using Smart Audiobook Player for several years. It plays everything I throw at it and is easy to use.
This is easy to do regardless of the app. But I will recommend that you use Smart AudioBook Player. It is what I use and it's great. One of the few options that can bookmark and save location on an mp3.
To get it to sync all you need to do is keep your library in the a Dropbox folder that is stored offline. BOOM, where you have Internet you will have your audiobooks up to date. This is how I keep my ebooks and my ROMs up to date across platforms.
Do you use any kind of special app/program to listen to your audiobooks? I used Smart AudioBook Player and it has changed me from an occasional audiobook listener (long drives, or whatever) to an absolute fanatic.
I highly recommend it, if you don't already use something similar. (Alternatives are available for iPhone as well.)
Key features: "Smart" pausing. Pause for a second and it backs up about 3 seconds to help understanding mid-sentence. Pause for an hour and it backs up like 30 seconds to help you remember where you were at. It has a sleep mode that stops it after 10 minutes, unless you simply jostle the phone. Speed and EQ settings. (I listen to all mine at about 1.4x speed. Really helps keep my mind from wandering).

As it stands, I started with the library versions (Overdrive is amazing, isn't it?), and if the library version was checked out I got impatient and just got the Audible version. So, now I have a library that looks something like 1,2,5,8...it's very frustrating.
So I kept the mp3s from the library and installed smart audiobook player, and it works well enough.
I use smart audiobook player it does not sync but has Bluetooth and will be the best audiobook app you will ever try!
The files I get are in MP3 format, so it's the same as adding a song. You just put the files on your phone's SD. I know you said you "have no luck" but what does that mean? Does it fail to copy? get an error message? Are you trying to copy to too small of a card?
I do it all of the time. I have a 256GB microSD card so plenty of room. I have a good 5 or 6 books on my phone now (In MP3 form). the structure is SD Card > Audiobook > Author > Books Series > Book > Chapters/mp3 files

plays books really well. I also can stream them from Emby or Plex, but the player is more designed for music with those and the Smart Audiobook Player app is much more suited to audiobooks.
If you're looking to not be tied to the audible app and to actually download your books I'd suggest Open Audible. Allows you to download them and then convert them. Lots of options to split it by chapter or have the whole book as a single mp3.
If you're thinking of switching to Android then I suggest Smart AudioBook Player. Been using the app for years. By far the best audiobook player app I've found. Feature rich without being complicated.
I too use Smart AudioBook Player, and that's my favorite feature. It begins to fade out the audio as a warning that it's about to sleep, but I think it's now Pavlov'ed me into jiggling my phone every time that happens. I'm rewarded every time with a satisfying ding, and then more stories!

I use the Smart AudioBook Player for listening and WiFi File Transfer Pro for transfers. Both have a free and a paid version and it was worth it for me to pay the couple bucks each for the full feature versions.
plex doesn't remember where you are which sucks. I just have all my audiobooks on my media server and copy one to my phone and play it with smart audiobook player.
considering they're usually super small in filesize I see no problem in doing that. we don't have to stream everything.

I like the Android app Smart Audiobook player, because it lets me adjust the balance and bass/treble. I have hearing issues on one side and my version of android doesn't let me adjust it. It's a pita to convert my Audible books to use and I wouldn't if I didn't have a specific need , but this app is nice.

What app are you using to play audiobooks? I recommend Smart Audiobook Player. The icon may look poor, but it's a fantastic app for audiobooks. Interestingly, the dev actually changed the icon for one release, but there was a backlash so he/she changed it back :)
On the question of whether audio stops when changing to other apps, this shouldn't really happen unless the other app is playing some audio on the same channel, but it might be if the app you're playing with doesn't work like that.

Smart Audiobook Player lets you set folders as a default directory at will automatically pull MP3s and save your place in them. And it can save multiple places at once so you can listen to more than 1 book. Audible is good, but somewhat expensive. You get a free audiobook when you sign up for a trial though, and regardless if you continue the service you get to keep that book forever.
Take a look at Smart AudioBook Player. As the name suggests, it's meant for audiobooks so it will keep track of everything in your library.
The only downside is that if you want to keep the recordings apart and not all be in the same "book", you need to put them into unique folders. For example:
/Lectures/Lesson 1/file.mp3 /Lectures/Lesson 2/file.mp3
And so on.
If you keep them all in the same folder, say:
/Lectures/file1.mp3 /Lectures/file2.mp3
Etc, they will show up as a single book and the player will put the files together and only remember how far into the overall "book" you are and not each individual file.
Seems like you might need to use your account to access files associated with that account?
I use Overdrive just for downloading, but listen with another app (because the experience is better). I'd recommend deleting the Overdrive app, and using one of the many very good audiobook players available for Android.

It's the one I used when I was working in a factory. Hands working on the table, one earplug in the ear. Went through approximately 30 Discworlds this way.
So it is a bit of work, but I've had to split long audiobooks up using Audacity before. It's a process, but I've worked out a system that works well for me. I can type it up if that's something that sounds interesting.
Does your local library have audiobooks? a lot of them do either as audio cd's or MP3 cd's.
MP3 cd's usually have a lot of short tracks. Audio CD's do too, but I don't like that as much because you have to go in and name them all, and that's a pain. So I usually join all the tracks together as one long track and then rip it, so I end up with 1 track per CD.
And because piracy is bad I'll then free the space back up when I'm done listening before returning the book to the library.
What music app are you using? Most every one I've used in the last 10 years has had the ability to remember position. I know that iTunes does on the Apple side, and on Android I've used Smart Audiobook Player in the past and Listen Audiobook player currently.
One feature I love is that it records the playback history, so if I accidently start playing it while my headphones are in my pocket or whatever I can just look at the history and go back to the place it was at before. Also the sleep timer has saved my bacon a few times when I was listening just before bed. Set it to stop playing automatically if the phone hasn't been jiggled in 15 minutes after 10pm, and if it does time out it skips back 15 minutes so I won't miss anything.
I've also had people recommend Mort Audiobook Player, but I haven't tried that one.
Overdrive (getting audiobooks from your library through the app) works great. The other audiobook app I use is Smart AudioBook Player. It works great!

I can't say enough good things about this app. It plays, organizes, and has the best sleep feature ever: It uses the accelerometer and after whatever time frame you've set fades the book out, unless you jiggle it and reset the timer. Works based on normal movement too.
Even without the in-app purchases, still a solid app.

Ignore the hideous logo, the app itself works wonderfully at managing audiobooks (And podcasts, though it doesn't download them).
That means I keep 3 apps, Google Play Music, for music, AntennaPod, for podcasts and SmartAudiobookPlayer for Audiobooks, but each app does its job and I can't complain much :)

I LOVE Smart AudioBook Player for playing non-Audible titles. Easy to setup and tons of nice features. Of course it's no available on the Amazon App Store (boo). Akimbo seems to have decent reviews. While I understand why they do it, it's annoying how anti-consumer Amazon is by locking you into the Amazon App Store (which is missing like 90% of the great apps).
If your problems are that the old phone is dying all the time it might be in need of a new battery. If you want a new phone for audiobooks and phone stuff i would second getting something with a sd card slots such as a moto g2 LTE model.

My recommendation is to track the characters. My audio book player (Android: Smart Audiobook) has a characters tool with a name and description field. And in most seekers I can copy the this from one book to the next. I know it's not perfect or easy but there are some amazing books out there with lots of characters. The two I'm working on now aren't lit rpg but too great not to recommend.

I think if you can find a way to make your audible files into mp3 this app would be good for it. You can even put multiple mp3s in a folder and have it play them one after the other.
Love falling asleep to audiobooks, but I absolutely hate audibles sleep feature.
If you're on Android, this app is way better. Problem with audible is it locks you in to a duration and if it's not enough you have to turn your phone screen on to extend it. This uses motion. After 9 minutes it will slightly lower the volume and shut off unless the phone gets jossled, so I just have to slap near it on the bed and it kicks off for another 9min.

You got a couple hundred on me lol I read mostly sci-fi, PNR, fantasy and HR, very little CR in comparison but that's mainly because I like the crazier action, adventures and escapism of the other genres, not because of my 1st person narrative avoidance. I use a sync to Dropbox that lets me choose various titles to add to my local Android sync folder that's connected to Smart Audiobook Player (it's a little complicated to find the local folder initially)
Once it's done it's really easy to use DB to locally sync the titles you want on your device at any given time without syncing more than you need and Smart will immediately update to see those titles
If you don't want to deal with it I recommend Libation and Smart AudioBook Player.

Google assistant can run Tasks as named in Tasker; Hey Google open/run "Name of Task" with Tasker which could in turn be mapped to a Google routine for easier speaking. This would only work from the phone Tasker is on where Google is called from.
AutoVoice plugin, where you can Hey Google, ask AutoVoice to do something and again have these mapped to routines for easier speaking.
edit: This can be done from a Google Speaker, too, play on phone and with AutoCast, cast to Speaker or Chromecast.
AutoVoice alone with assistance maybe from AutoInput, or if the app supports standard media playback. Can be done without actually doing anything with Google assistant other than have AutoVoice trigger on OK Google and create custom command that are easier for them.

It won't work for Audible, since they only use their own proprietary files. For my non-Audible books I use Smart AudioBook Player, which is capable of most file types (including MP3) and very customizable. I use Audible for hours a day, and it would be nice to have all of my books in one place; but for those few titles I have in other formats the Smart player is invaluable.
The audible app is one of the buggiest media players I've ever encountered and I have moved on from it fully. I used libation to download my library and use Smart Audiobook Player to listen.
I don't get Audible Plus books this way, but I've got enough of a backlog for that not to matter right now.

i have a good audiobook app that has a timer that if there's no movement it'll shut off, when the 30min timer hits, it sets off a small alarm that you can hear in the audiobook, and i just wiggle the phone on my beside table and it keeps going - but if no wiggle, it shuts off. it's really handy.

About your questions: You cannot read sideloaded books (or Personal Documents, as Amazon describes files from outside the amazon.com store) in Cloud Reader or Windows desktop app. Just no :-( On kindle you can only play audiobooks from official Amazon/Audible stores. What player you are using will be very important here.
Basic info: an MP3 is a compressed file already.
If you name them so they appear in the order you wish, you can place them into a folder and then ZIP the folder with NO compression.
Then, rename the file from Audiobook.zip to Audiobook.mp3.
As long as you did not compress them when putting them into the ZIP, then you will have one file that can be played by any MP3 player, in the correct chapter order.
Now the player you use will determine access to chapters.
I honestly dont know of any that will give you "access" to the chapters in the way provided above.
BUT, another form .m4b, should give you the ability to do what you want.
Unfortunately, i know nothing of audiosoftware on a MAC to tell you how to do this, but I can give you information on what to search for.
For one, to covert audiofiles into .m4b and also allow you to "tag" them. This is a fairly common term when dealing with audio.
an M4b is a universal file, much like an mp3 is, so googling should give you more information on that.
Now, back to my original question, how do you plan on listening to these files?
I tend to only listen to audiobooks from a phone...and I have two. an Iphone and an Android.

On my Android, I use a player that I can just leave them in a folder, and it handles the organization and allows me to me move between the chapters, (but the chapters are individual files)
If I have an .m4b file properly setup with chapter tags, then it will also use those.

Relating to audiobooks I have set up my own suite of programs I use for organized listening. Here's what I have
- A good audio book player. I use Smart Audio Book Player. It has bookmarks, can modulate volume level & playback speed (0.5x - 2.5x) and lots more (I love the resume-a-bit-back-from-where-paused feature).
- Tubemate (Android link). An app that can browse & download from loads of different video sites as well as play just the audio of them (and thus playing YT clips with your screen off). You will need to bypass your device's security to install it.
- A good program to download video clips to your computer. I'm using 4K YouTube to MP3 on my Windows machine. As your Internet is probably more stable on your computer than your phone. And TubeMate can be a bit wonky at times.
- On Android I use Pocket Casts for easily accessing most podcasts. Definetly worth it's low cost. If you're on an Apple device I guess iTunes does that.
And now you can go scrape good audio books from YouTube. To start with there's the courses which the man himself teaches (I find the 14-15 ones to be superior to newer ones).
Apart from that I've found The Gulag Archipelago, Explaining Postmodernism as well as Sowell's Basic Economics.

Smart Audiobook Player has been awesome the last couple of weeks for me, as I've been getting back into audiobooks after trying Material Audiobook player which people have been suggesting all over these threads. It's kind of a weird one, since audible has their own proprietary file format ".aax" a.k.a "Audible Enhanced Audiobook" and it has DRM. You can go on the desktop website and download books from your library, but as far as I know, there aren't many applications that will play .aax files. This is not something I ever looked into but I'm vaguely aware that iTunes (win/mac) can play them and also Apple Books (on IOS). Not to mention if you have a big library, it would be a pain in the ass to go through every single page and click download on every single row of books there.
I personally store my backups in Dropbox (cloud storage service), so I don't have to worry about a storage device dying. And if I had a need to play them, I would use Bound on iOS. It can download files from cloud stroage, so I always have access to my entire library without having to like be at home and plug it into a computer with a cable or something. If the Audible mobile app stopped working in the middle of a work day, which actually has happened, I can easily just download a book from there and listen to it, assuming I have it backed up. I don't know for sure what the best player is on Android, but I've heard good things about Smart Audiobook Player.
Just a quick rant: I would never use a phone as a backup storage. I would trust Audible keep allowing me to download books way more than I trust that I won't break my phone. Audible just doesn't guarantee they will always be downloadable, but they won't go out of their way to remove titles from your library or make them unavailable to download... Unless of course you contact them and say you can't find it like OP did. It might be kinda ok to store on the phone if your phone backup also includes app data... but I still wouldn't recommend it.

No. Audible is an audiobook service owned by Amazon and their player is locked to their content. However, there are some outstanding audiobook players for iOS and Android that rival and surpass Audible in terms of features and usability.
BookPlayer on iOS is phenomenal and does everything that Audible does for your own audio files. The app supports m4a and mp3 chaptered audiobook formats (I use XLD and Fission for my audiobook creation). Being an Audible subscriber, I use both daily and I actually prefer BookPlayer for playing back my own audiobooks. Their AppleWatch integration is also better than Audible's in my humble opinion.
Smart Audiobook Player for Android Phones I have heard is great. I am an Apple user, but friends rave about it for the same reasons as BookPlayer.
Oh, and both are free to use. Optional tips are not required to use full functionality.
Thank you for creating the Plex Audiobook Guide. I've only tried it now with just one group of recordings, but it works exactly as hoped. Now if I could only get the Dev. behind Smart Audiobook Player (Android) to modify it to play from a Plex library, then I'll be thrilled. also, I mentioned it in a comment above, but the best way I've found for listening to downloaded podcasts is this audiobook app. each episode is just seen as a chapter of a book so it will save your progress when you stop on the middle of an episode and archive what you've already listened to.
shoot ok that's not what I expected that feature to be.
my backup plan was to use this which I've used before for podcasts. as long as they're numbered (I hope?) you can listen through them properly and it saves your progress if you stop mid episode.

mp3directcut has always been the best for editing mp3s without reencoding imo
I don't think it's prudent to take mp3s and transcode them into a different lossy format though... especially with audiobooks, where you probably have less than 100gb in total content (almost certainly less than 1TB).
Better just combining the mp3s into a single mp3, if that's really what you want.
Alternatively... use a better audiobook player like Smart Audiobook Player that works perfectly with hundreds of small .mp3s.
Also, for mass-editing tons of Audiobook metadata, consider MusicBrainz Picard. Not exactly its intended function... but for cleaning up tags on tons of Audiobooks, I haven't found a better tool.

Well I have epub and rar/m4b/mp3/etc under the same title.
My goal is to sync all my books to the SD card on my phone where Smart AudioBook Player can see audiobooks and FB Reader can see epub/pdf/etc. I want to keep them separate because audiobooks are chunky monkeys whereas epubs I can keep on the device forever.

This is very similar to my setup (minus the beefy hardware). I bought a Raspberry Pi to start self hosting a book server. I have some insight (after doing a ton of my own research and trials) with some, but not all of your wishlist items.

- Calibre is great for managing an eBook library in that auto pulls in metadata and allows you to really add/customize what you're storing. It's capacity as a shared server isn't great so instead I would recommend...
- I set up Calibre-Web as a web app that looks and works great
- Calibre-Web allows you to send an eBook directly to your Kindle (if you have one) by using the "email to Kindle" feature
- Calibre-Web uses the library database, and forced storage structure, of Calibre. So you kind of use both apps. I think you can technically use the upload and book management features from Calibre-Web, but I find it so much easier to just do all that through Calibre directly
- Audiobooks
- Oh the white whale of audiobooks
- There are a few different things you can do here, all with their own pros and cons
- There is a full audiobook server you can set up called Booksonic
- The developer is looking to create a full new server at some point, but this should still work
- This will let you store audiobooks on a server (like Plex) and then listen to them directly through the Booksonic app on your phone
- I've never used it, but heard both good and bad things about it. Ultimately, I think it comes down to the fact that there are much better apps for listening to audiobooks
- Plex
- You can sort of use Plex, though it clearly doesn't have an "audiobook" type like Movies, TV, or Music
- You would have to make it a music folder and use a custom metadata handler to handle it
- The one major con is that it will mark your book as "read" when you hit a certain threshhold (like 90% of a movie for example). Once it hits that, it thinks you're done and won't save your progress anymore. I've read a lot of people running into that particular issue
- If you're on iOS, there is apparently a fantastic app called Prologue. I'm very jealous of this, as I'm on Android, but have read nothing but amazing things about it. It should let you use Plex as a proper audiobook solution and is probably worth checking out
- Calibre-Web
- This is what I actually do for my audiobooks
- Calibre (and Calibre-Web) allow you to add a number of different file types to your "book entry"
- I zip up my audiobook folder and add it to the book in Calibre
- I really like this approach as it lets me view all my books in one place and see which I have audiobooks for

I'm considering switching back to an iPhone for the first time since iPhone 4S.
There are two things I do with my Android phone that I remember not being able to do with an iPhone that have become essential functions for me, but this was a long time ago.
I download audiobooks in all kinds of audio formats and use a handy Android app called Smart Audiobook Player: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ak.alizandro.smartaudiobookplayer&hl=en_US. Is there something similar for the iPhone? I used to use iTunes to manually load music files on my 4S, but I believe I read that iTunes was finally decoupled from the iPhone recently. So how do you load content physically from a computer now?
And my second feature is... Last.fm scrobbling. When I finally figured out that I could do it from my phone (this was my fault, not the lack of an app) my yearly plays quadrupled and are obviously more accurate now. I listen to a lot of music from my phone via Bluetooth and want to record those listens on Last.fm, does the iPhone currently have a decent app that does this? I listen to files that I have physically loaded onto the phone via USB, no streaming or anything like that. I assume there is still only one app that plays these files and it is Apple's own Music app?

I got it initially for actual audio books and audio plays (Big Finish Doctor Who stuff) but found that it works really good for podcast archives as well. Just put the folder in whatever directory you have set as root and boom, you've got a 70+ hour "audiobook" that automatically saves wherever you stop and supports things like sleep timers and stuff.
I use Smart Audiobook for Android, and no complaints - it does everything I need including a sleep timer (which is helpful for me), equalizer, speed, etc.

I have the pro Smart AudioBooks Player (this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ak.alizandro.smartaudiobookplayer ), and as far as I can tell, the Android Wear app is only a remote control, it doesn't do anything when unethered from the phone.
I have successfully used a different app to play audiobooks on my watch, Wear Casts ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.krisdb.wearcasts ) - it's built for podcasts, but it has a mode to just play files from your filesystem, and it remembers your place. So it more or less works, but it doesn't sync to your phone. Also, you have to use a different app it's transfer files over. I've been using NavExplorer ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.turndapage.navexplorer )
The other problem I ran into is that my Huawei watch has nominally 4 gigs of space, but in reality it's more like 4-500 megabytes available after accounting for the OS and a few apps. So one large-ish book on the device, and it starts complaining about not having enough space to download and install updates.
Between the storage issues, and the lack of sync between the watch and the phone, I basically gave up on audiobooks from my watch. I just do podcasts right now, and in the past I put some music on it.
It doesn't list that file type. It does have a free version giving you the full version for a trial. Might check and see if it works and you can msg the dev about it. He does updates regularly and adds features requested.

Every fucking update to the Audible app in the past few years has made it worse....
WHAT THE FUCK AUDIBLE, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!
Last I checked, this info was available in the largest of the widgets (which I usually kept on my homescreen).
That said, I recently backed up my entire Audible collection and converted by MP3 (using AAX Audio Converter v1.6) and am now test-driving other apps.
I'm currently testing Smart Audiobook Player, and here are my impressions after about two weeks:
SABP has two progress bars visible, one for chapter, one for book. Audible has only the one that you can toggle. I list this first, since you specifically mention progress bar issues with Audible.
SABP SUPPORTS FOLDERS! Are you listening /u/audible_com ? FOLDERS TO ORGANIZE BOOKS LIKE WE HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR FOR YEAR!!!!!. Not a big deal when you have a dozen titles, but a huge fucking deal when you have hundreds. Audible does not support folders (or any kind of personal organization), and it is absolutely inexcusable. It has been the most requested feature for years, and it would take an intern all of a few days to implement. This isn't technology that is pushing the envelope. The ability to organize files and folders is programming 101. It is just fucking apathy. They don't care.
SABP has two sets of configurable jump forward/back buttons. Default setting are 10 seconds and 1 min, which I think are about perfect. Short jumps when you just missed that last word or phrase, or bigger jumps when you are trying to find the spot where you fell asleep. This isn't a feature I ever knew I wanted, but I absolutely love it. Probably my favorite difference between SABP and Audible, as Audible just has the one configurable set. I usually kept it at 30 making it kind of useful for either purpose, but not particularly great at either.
SABP adjusts the "time remaining" on your book based on your playback speed. Audible does not. A little thing, but a nice one.
SABP gives me the option to either pause my book, of entirely close the app (removing it from the notifications bar), from the widget. Audible only has the pause/play option.
SABP has a sleep time with a shake awake feature that really works well. I actually just leave it on all the time on a 45 min timer, and it almost never actually counts all the way down without me shaking it awake just by doing my day-to-day stuff, but it goes to sleep just like it should when I do.
SABP has a volume boost option (plus an equalizer). Audiobook sound quality can vary (especially for older recordings ported from cassette or CD), and it doesn't tend to be particularly loud. Both of these can present problem in noisy environments. And I don't mean an industrial site, I mean driving down the highway. Sometimes just the wind noise (with the windows close) is enough to make the book difficult to listen to over the car stereo, or even my neckband headset with external speakers 2-inches from my ears. Forget about rolling the windows down on a nice day, and listening to you book at the same time. Audible has neither.
SABP doesn't experience frequent crashes. Audible crashes. Audible crashes a lot. The amount of times that my Audible books would just stop playing for no apparent reason was just obnoxious, and usually when I checked, the App was no longer running. I didn't close it, so that means it crashed. It crashed a lot. Several times a day usually. It never really bothered me too much, I'd just start it up again. Now that I don't have to put up with it anymore, I can't believe I put up with it for so long.
Now, just so you don't think I'm blowing sunshine and roses here, there are a couple of disadvantages.
My audio files converted from AAX to MP3 sound a little crackly with just a hint of static, but only when playing directly on my phone speaker. It isn't intolerable (I'm actually listening to it this way as I type) and only occasionally mildly annoying, but it isn't perfect sounds quality. However, this is not happening when I listen via any Bluetooth connection (I regularly use a headset, a set of earbuds, and two bluetooth speakers (shower and regular)), and NONE of them have presented the crackling. I haven't yet determined if this is specific to the player or the files themselves (will find out when I test another player). I have never had a single audio-quality (other than the low volume issues) with Audible.
Audible App offers a wider range, and more granular control of playback speeds. Audible's range is 0.50x - 3.5x, adjustable in increments of .05x for the entire range. SABP offers a range of 0.5x - 3.0x. From 0.5x - 2.0x it is adjustable in increments of .1x, and from 2.0x - 3.0x it is adjustable in increments of .2x. I usually prefer the 1.2x setting for most books, but I did occasionally bump up to 1.25x, so I miss that a little, but not too much.
Audible App gives direct access to the store. It is super easy to just buy, download, and listen. SABP obviously does not. At this point, buying a new book means I purchase and download on a PC, convert the file, then upload to my phone. The extra steps are a hassle. While this should really be a point in favor of Audible, it is actually kind of mixed for me. My biggest problem with Audible at the moment is that for years now, they have put all of their development efforts into making the app more profitable (easier to browse, buy, purchase, etc.), and seemingly zero effort into making a better user experience.
I dont know about an app, but I use audiobookbay + Smart audiobookplayer on my android device.

You're going to need a converter for each format, there's not going to be one fix. There are a few with names like DRM Remover that will strip DRM from most things like Overdrive, but you'll want InAudible for Audbile books.
As for something to play all of them, I'd recommend Smart Audiobook Player since you're on Android. It's what I use, and I even bough the premium version just because I wanted them to know how much I enjoyed it. It will handle just about any format once the DRM is removed (and I've noticed it can skip certain DRM on its own).

That's really not a very long journey. I don't mean that to be dismissive, don't get me wrong, it's not particularly fun, but hardly grounds for dying of boredom. It's long enough that you could actually get into something! The worst journeys for me are always the ones that are too short to get into anything, or to take a nap. A train journey that has a leg that's 45 minutes or so always annoys me. Ugh.
If you're not subject to motion sickness then bring a book (it's basically the only time I get around to reading these days). If it's going to be a regular thing then possibly get a handheld (I played a lot of PSP games when I used to travel eight hours back and forth to Edinburgh).
In terms of audio content there's a huge buffet of things available these days (I'm so glad I don't need to carry around stacks of cassettes like I used to when I was a child!).
I love comedy audio dramas; some are made by people on the internet, some are things that were originally broadcast on Radio 4. Here's a few I recommend:
MarsCorp E. L. Hobb is shipped to Mars in suspended animation along with a load of people to join the existing team of colonists. She's woken up and gets stuck into her job as second in command of the main base. MarsCorp has its own culture, caste system, and various other odd things going on but she tackles them with a combination of intelligence, exasperation, and violence.
I'm a massive fan of this one and the team do a great job creating a solid soundscape to provide a good backdrop for the surprisingly large cast. I think the second series is in production at the moment and I'm looking forward to it immensely.
Angstrom A BBC one. Four episodes. This vaguely parodies Scandi noir murder mysteries but is mostly just gleefully daft. Lots of dad jokes.
Tin Can This one's not actually a comedy - it's the story of Gene Reynolds, a pilot who becomes stranded out in space after an accident aboard a ship. It's a complete thing and I really enjoy the sound design of it.
The Brothers Faversham Each episode tells the story of one of the Faversham brothers. Each one was a huge figure in Victorian society, whether they were an explorer, a playwright, or a soldier. Intensely silly from beginning to end and something that I still enjoy relistening to on a regular basis.
Space Saga in Space A daft sci-fi show which the cast clearly enjoys being involved in. It tends to be a bit more wholesome than some of the other shows but still has some cracking bits that make me laugh.
I'm constantly adding audio dramas to my collection as they're useful when I travel. If I'm feeling a bit lost putting on a familiar audio drama always makes the place I'm staying feel more like my own space.
Beyond that there's also audiobooks - loads of good stuff available on that front these days (and you may even be able to get access to a load through your local library - ours has some sort of deal with another website that means that library card credentials grant access to their downloads).
On any given work day I've got Smart AudioBook Player keeping me company with the various books I've loaded into it. I was recently relistening to something from GraphicAudio and before that the audiobook adaptation of MASH.
While do this myself, I don't think it makes sense for most people. It’s quite the hassle.
I have my whole audible library + 300 other titles in Dropbox and I use Bound on IOS. I tell Bound to download books from a specific folder in Dropbox and that's about it. It's fairly similar to how Audible works.
On Android, you can use Smart Audiobook Player to do something similar. Obviously you can transfer files with a cable, but if you want some convenience, you can also use cloud services like Dropbox by pointing SAP's library to the audiobook folder in Dropbox and making files available offline in Dropbox. They will then show up in the player. You can also export files to SAP's folder from Dropbox, if you want to put them in the SD card.
I also noticed recently that the Dropbox app on mobile remembers where you left off, so that may do in a pinch just on its own.

I use Audible for Audible and everything else goes on Smart AudioBook Player. I enjoyed it enough to pay for the full version. I love being able to customize the headphone button skip (I do 1 minute rewind, 30 second fast-forward).
EDIT: Sorry, also thought you meant an app. We use a bluetooth to radio signal because our car stereo is old and crappy. Then we hook our phone up and use the apps I listed above. Spotify for podcasts and music. All the streaming apps have a download to device option.

I did try out Listen but I couldn't find anything about it that Smart didn't do and I stuck with the UI I knew better.

Smart Audiobook Player is the best player by a HUGE margin. The featureset is amazing and the developer is has been very active for a long time. It's perhaps my best purchase in over 5 years using Android.
Edit: Just saw you want a standalone device. Trickier. I'm quite happy using a Sony Walkman headset with built-in storage (doesn't need a phone) but it only reads MP3. What I do is convert audio files with EZ, it's pretty fast and drag-and-drop. I sometimes even recode MP3s because some audiobooks are needlessly big.. like 500mb that could be recompressed to 100mb without any audible loss. Sometimes I also split them in smaller files, so a huge mp3 becomes 0001, 0002, etc each lasting 15 minutes or so. I use several different hardware players and found that it's tricky to have a format they all like and manage well, but it always works out with multiple mp3 files.

I agree that the app is the best app on the windows platform. On the android side there's Smart AudioBook Player, not really sure what you could add that's missing (Maybe a sort of reading and listening sync). What I'd kill for is 1) sort by duration 2) Cover grid feature, something like Cozy.

While a paid version exists, I've only ever used the free basic version and have been quite satisfied with it. It does all the things you mention wanting. It is one of the most widely used audiobook apps from what I understand.
Voice appears to do what you want and is apparently GPL 3.0 or later compliant according to F-Droid. I have no experience with it, so cannot say one way or the other about it.

You can download episodes on the current feed through PocketCasts. If you want to download and play purchased mp3s though, by far the best app for audiobooks etc. I have found is Smart Audiobook Player. You'll have to either download them through the phone from the website or on a computer and then transfer them to your phone, though.

Here's a tip that works for me You can use any Audiobook player app, since that tracks your progress automatically.
I actually use both of them, one for actual Audio books, and the other for the Glossika course. This way i don't have to switch books when i open the player. I just open the right player and hit play. They both automatically keep track of the file(mp3) i'm on and resume from there.
I'm not sure how Glossika zip file is organized. I downloaded Glossika Fluency 123 from a torrent( to try out before i buy). And they came in 3 folders, one for each level. And the names of the files were numbered so sorted right. I just copied them to the AudioBooks folder and pointed the players. The players seemed to have found the 3 folders and if i open a book, they play all the files in order(after one finishes). Unfortunately the bundle had some extra audio files for the initial chapters, which were repeats. I think they were just updates/corrections.

Sometimes it depends on how you listened to the preview. Did you listen to it through your computer speakers or in your car? Did you listen to it with headphones? I've had some problems in the past, and when I wore headphones/fiddled with the equalizer I could hear it a lot better.
I usually listen while driving so it did take a few minutes to fiddle with the equalizer settings to how I wanted them, but now I can hear everything without complaint. The app I use on my phone is called Smart Audiobook, and it is really worth checking out.
If you want to listen to a non-violent chapter, try this one out.
And it is expensive, but audiobooks as a whole are expensive. Audible's The Way of Kings costs $63.95 while the five parts of Graphic Audio's version costs $69.95.
For $6 more you get a full voice cast and sound effects, which I personally think is worth it. Another thing to think about is if you throw in an extra dollar per part you get the .flac files, which essentially means that they are the uncompressed audio files that are excellent for storage and sound as initially intended.
Listening to audiobooks is an expensive hobby, but I find Graphic Audio's version to be just as (or even more) enjoyable then reading them on my own. They really do bring the stories to life.

Tasker is amazing. IMO Google should buy Tasker or Automate and make it a first party thing.
The reasons I love Android are similar to the reasons I have always loved the Mac, the OS gets out of my way. I know I don't represent a large user base. I'm a power user and I want to an experienced tailored to fit me.
Besides the fact I actually now think Android(post 5.0) is better designed than iOS, not that iOS is poorly designed, I have many use cases that just can't exist on iOS. Whenever I bring them up with my iOS using friends, they always dismiss them and say well you are the only person interested in doing that. I feel like that idea has invaded the whole of Apple. I say that as someone who has preordered and is stoked on the 2016 15" mbp and I am a full time iOS developer (I'm also an Android dev if that makes any diff).
The use case that probably keeps me on Android the most is audiobooks. I have an amazing audiobook player that couldn't exist on iOS. It just accesses my hard-drive to get the books, I can download books directly from Drive (or w/e cloud provider you want) and play them on the audiobook player. The app has a sleep timer built in and that can be reset by shaking the device. Its amazing to fall asleep to because if the player starts to sleep the audiobook, it fades it out slowly, you can just shake the device to listen for another 20 minutes. I'm a huge Mac/Apple fan but I use Android for many reasons. One of which is because of iOS' restrictive design. For example one of my most used apps is an audiobook listener https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ak.alizandro.smartaudiobookplayer, I love it and it could not exist on iOS. If it did it would be a hobbled version of itself.
So say what you will, but the argument that a device shouldn't do something because it's a "phone" or because it was "never meant to" is not valid to me.
Seems like an audiobook app would be perfect for that.

Smart Audiobook Player has some great features. I use it both for audiobooks and audio examples in a language I'm learning.
If I had to guess you were using my favourite, Smart Audiobook Player.
I wish Audible had not only that feature, but their sleep mode resets based on movement. SO I set it for 5 minutes, if I'm still awake it starts fading out and I jiggle it, and boom, 5 more minutes.
Then when I wake up, I just go back 5 minutes, get a minimal overlap but always near to where I remember leaving off.

I use Smart Audiobook Player. A lot of great features, saves your place etc. You just have to organize the podcasts into individual folders but it's totally worth it.

It saves your progress, has adjustable short/long rewind/FF buttons, displays the total length and total completed, allows the audio to be sped up or slowed doen and allows the use of bookmarks.
How is it compared to Smart?
I like the former being open source, of course, but beyond this.
Smart Audiobook Player. The best app for audio books if you bring your own files. The interface is so much better than Audible, particularly the sleep timer, shake to reset, etc.
Not seeing that issue with either Play Music nor Smart AudioBook Player.
How did you upgrade to 6.0? I sideloaded the OTA, then cleared the cache from fastboot.
Also, what car? I'm in a '15 Jetta with the "Connectivity Package" stereo. Have you tried with a standalone Bluetooth speaker or a different car?
You can search for audiobook apps on the play store, there are quite a few of them that will deal with this very well. They'll also let you pause and come back to the correct location easily. I recommend Smart AudioBook Player

I prefer Smart Audiobook Player lots of nifty features including sleep mode where it lowers the volume at a set time & pauses the book so you don't miss hours & hours because you zonked out.
For audiobooks, I use Smart AudioBook Player, it lets you adjust playback speed. I've never desired to speed up music.. that sounds like an odd preference, but to each their own.
I use Smart Audiobook Player. It's not as pretty, but all its features are free for 30 days, after which it's like a buck to have some pretty neat features... that I never even use, LOL. I like that it can skip back or ahead 10 seconds or a minute, it has playback speed (though I leave this alone) and notes for keeping track of stuff (though I never use it).
Smart Audiobook Player, I used to listen to audiobooks using Play Music but got sick of losing my place if I ever wanted to listen to music while in the middle of a book. This app saves your place, for multiple books. Lets you change the playback speed, has a timer option in case you fall asleep.
Above all it has a really simple UI and doesn't feel cluttered even though it has tons of features.
Smart AudioBook Player if you love audiobooks it is hands down the best player out there. the free version was good enough that i bought the full just to support the dev.

Sounds like a product looking for a reason to be.
I've had no problems putting my phone, and subsequently my 2012 N7 under my pillow while listening to audiobooks before dropping off.
In fact I would recommend it greatly, awesome dreams...
- install smartaudiobookplayer
- Turn wifi/BT etc off
- Turn screen brightness to min
- Volume can ge right down too
- Place under pillow speaker side up and enjoy knowing you've just saved $40 on an idea with no real use.

I recommend Smart AudioBook Player, that way you can keep your music in a separate folder on your SD Card, and never have to worry about Shuffle. Plus it has a Sleep Timer and other more AudioBook oriented features as opposed to a music player.

Sideload? You can just connect your Kindle to your Computer and copy the audiobooks. I would recommend you keep the file as m4b since those files support a few things that "normal" audio files like mp3 don't. You might as well consider getting a dedicated app for audiobooks. I like this one.
I also dumped some of the apps i have been using for years as they stopped working later on updated versions and also issues and no response from Devs made me look for alternatives.
