UniWar, if you're into strategy. It's got multiplayer which you can both play at your own pace, so you can move your troops and go do something else while you wait for your SO to make their move.

I know I mention this game a lot in this subreddit, but you should check out UniWar. It is essentially starcraft crossed with advanced wars. Because all the combat is turn based, you and your friends can take your turns whenever it is convenient. You can play against each other or you can even play as a co-op team and take on other players together.

The game's universe is rich, grim and dark, hundreds of books etc BUT the game does a fanastic job of introducing the lore in an entertaing and consumable fashion.

An Android (and iOS) game I've loved for years is UniWar. It's a turn-based strategy games with both single (AI) and multiplayer. There's no "pay to win" or "wait to play" stuff in the game.
Uniwar
It's sort of like Advance Wars meets Starcraft. The game plays very similar to AW; it's turn based with base capturing to get resources and build units. However, there are 3 unique races similar to the ones in Starcraft, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. It's a well balanced game that has a small but strong community behind it, supporting the continued development by making maps and providing balance feedback that the devs actually take into consideration.

The only one that comes to mind is Uniwar. It's not PBEM but you could invite some friends to a game, I can't remember how many at once though. It's turn based so you would go, then it would be your friends turn, so on and so on. It could be worth checking out. I haven't played it in a couple years.
By cross platform, do you mean iOS and Android, or Phone and PC?

There are some boardgame adaptions that support asynchronous play. That might be the right thing for you. For example UniWar

Maybe UniWar?
Here are some of the very early classics that stuck with me. Most of these are from 2010/2011 and most are still supported and still great games.
- Literally everything by Hexage, Orange Pixel, and Mika Mobile. All three devs were kicking ass from the very beginning; all are still active and actively updating their games.
- Uniwar - fantastic TBS; still going strong.
- Galcon one of the first "big" iOS ports that I remember.
- PewPew 2 - still one of the best twin-stick shooters on Android.
- Steambirds - fun, simple strategy game.
- Emmersary of War - devs came from Bioware; one of the first mobile games I played that felt like it could have been a PC game.
- Pocket Legends - one of the very first mobile MMOs; probably the very first well executed mobile MMO.
- Several Gameloft games. This was before Google Play back when it was called Google Market. Back before Gameloft turned evil and sacrificed gameplay for IAP, they had several buy-once games that were only available from their website. They were all unashamedly clones of popular games, but they were executed very well. Dungeon Hunter 1 & 2 were amazing Diablo clones. They had a very solid StarCraft clone. The first Nova game was a great Halo clone.
- The Amazon AppStore. Sounds funny now but Google Market was pretty awful back in the day. When Amazon launched their competitor having game categories was a pretty big deal. You could finally sort by RPGs or strategy or puzzle games.
More people should play Uniwar. Great strategy game, invite me to a game if you want. My username is the same as on here.
