The Animal Crossing series has always worked well on portable devices. I played a lot more of Wild World (DS) and New Leaf (3DS) than I did any of the home console versions as it can easily be played in short sessions. However, you can spend hours in it if you really want to, and that's where it differs to a lot of mobile titles. It's like a half-way house between a lengthy console game and a more casual mobile title.
If I wanted an ultra-casual time-gated incremental game with cute graphics that tried to push in-app purchases down my throat I'd just play Happy Street or Seabeard. We've already got a ton of games like that. That's why it's hard to get excited about yet another one when the only thing that sets it apart is its Animal Crossing skin.
> isn't that what a mobile game is supposed to do or at least what most people want a smartphone game to be?
Yeah, you're right, but those people already have those games. Emulation aside, there is no game that replicates the experience of playing Animal Crossing on Android, and from the looks of it there won't be for the foreseeable future. We can all see why Nintendo went this route, but I'm pretty sure that most of us (here at least) wish that they hadn't.
Happy Street, although I've only played a little bit of it.

This is kind of difficult to find the type of game you're looking for, especially on the mac for the asking price of "free", which makes it three times as hard, because there's not a lot, compared to PC. You might have some luck on places like Facebook (I'm not sure if they even have good games on there, since I no longer associate with the platform, nor have played any games since they've kept shutting down my favorite games), or you might have some luck in browser games... which is tough if you're looking for a game that saves progress. Free games are really difficult to come by these days, but here are some that I can think of, might work for you:

Mobage Emulation
Since I only own an iPhone and iPad, there's tons of games I used to play that's quite similar to Animal Crossing, but I'm not sure if it's available for mac. You may need to look through the appstore, or play it through an emulator like bluestacks, which is basically an open source software you install on your computer to use android apps. Here are a few titles that I know of that are similar, but not exactly like AC if you're going this route:
Happy Street - This game, to be honest, is the most similar out of all app games I've played. the villagers are animals, and they talk like the AC villagers, you build different buildings to decorate or invite new villagers to stay in your town, explore different areas to collect things or do missions.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp - It's free, but different gameplay, but at least you're playing the franchise.
Cat Forest - Healing Camp - It's sort of like AC: PC, but you play as a cat.

ITCHIO
If you're looking for mac only downloads, I'd personally recommend itch.io. It's a platform many indie developers launch their games on. Some are free, some are demos, and some titles that comes with a small price tag. You can sort through this list, or try some that I've found:
Lil Tribals (name your own price, so you can pay $0)

In regards to your response post for Stardew Valley
Honestly, Stardew Valley is the most popular title, and is very similar to AC that supports mac. Plus, it's a fraction of the price of what animal crossing costs on the Nintendo e-shop, and the amount of content and patches with more new content that Mr. Barone had given us for free, I think it is worth the price tag, even if you're not planning to play it all the time.
If you haven't tried the game, you can try it for 30 days if you purchase the game from GOG. They have a 30 day refund policy which is plenty of time to give you to at least try it out.
If you're willing to wait for a sale, Steam's Black Friday and Winter sale is just around the corner, and according to isthereanydeal's website, $7.49 USD is the lowest the game as ever been, which is a steal.
I hope something from this post has somewhat help you.
Happy Street fits the animal towns with balloons and such.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees this as a 3DS version of Happy Street?
