Foursquare. I prefer the "real world tips and recommendations" over the Yelp/google reviews. The "is this place good" is more simple, but it has brought that into the app. Rather, you can normally determine the popular local places based on the number of tips and photos. This to me, is more useful than just knowing "25 people and average of 3 stars".
(I make a point - a rule even - to never eat somewhere that is available to me local when I am traveling. No chains. Foursquare really helps me find the good places. It is a shame they bastardized the check-in process, because with time this may make the check-in/tips more rare and eventually cause it all to decline)
You can try Foursquare (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joelapenna.foursquared) for cafes, restaurants, bars, etc.
Just try and use it more when Wifi is available so as not to overburden your MB plan, and of course try to search in it for places in advance.
