I've been a NYT Crossword subscriber for a long time. I applaud NYT for finally releasing an Android app, however, for a few reasons, I'll be sticking with Shortyz, which I consider the best crossword app (which includes NYT account support) for a few reasons...
Keyboard: arrow buttons make it possible to navigate around the crossword without reaching up to the puzzle. Call me lazy, but this is huge when you're on a tablet. Also, you can use whatever keyboard you want. The app is much more flexible in this and other regards.
Supporting a dev that I like and trust and who didn't take years to pay attention to Android users. I have given him a few bucks over the years for his continued work on a great app and suggest others do the same.
Other features like support for landscape mode, puzzle zoom, and alternate sources of puzzles (which are free).
Also anyone looking for a good crossword app, I would recommend Shortyz (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.totsp.crossword.shortyz). The set that NL plays is called "Universal" on here. The NYT app is also good but requires a subscription or purchasing individual packs, although there is a free trial period.
Shortyz Crosswords is easy on the battery and it can keep you occupied for hours if, that is, you're into crosswords.
Shortyz is the best, only downside is that the puzzles are all American focused. So the spell stuff like 'colour' wrong.
If you have an Android device, download the Shortyz app. Depending on the day of the week, you'll get Los Angeles Times, Jonesin, Newsday, Universal, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. I open the app everyday on my phone then go to My Files > Crosswords and send them all to my computer so I can solve them with Across Lite (and add them to the stash of puzzles I have on my hard drive). But you can solve them within the Shortyz app on your device if you want. If you have a NYT crossword subscription, you can enter your account info in the app and get the crossword there too.
Normally I download it to my (Android) phone using the Shortyz app then copy it to my laptop. If that doesn't work for you let me know. I have a bunch of them saved.
I like Shortyz Crosswords because it just works for me. You can pull all of the available crosswords from a specific date and work your way through, but you have to pick a date and then press the cloud button to pull them all for that day. There's a setting for when you input the incorrect letter and I find that helpful, though some would consider that cheating.
alphacross Crosswords is highly-rated too, though I didn't use it much.
I already had a Sudoku and a word search app, but the ones you suggested are much better. If you like crossword puzzles, Shortyz is a good one. I agree with you about mobile games not holding my attention, which is why I made this thread. I've tried several games, but always end up playing Sudoku, crosswords, and solitaire.
if you're on android there is shortyz
I am now looking for repository puzzles for my reMarkable 2 tablet. It's great to actually right on something that really feels like paper
It's not the one OP is using but as someone who has tried dozens of crossword apps for Android phones, Shortyz is definitely the best. Free (and open-source) and ad-free, and can automatically download puzzles from several publications.
I only use it while traveling, but have had good experience with the Shortyz app. Looks like it may be android only though, can't find it on the app store.
Shortyz crosswords is great and free. You can download puzzles from several sources including the LA Times, Newsday, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and more. It lets you pick the day from each week to download so you can effectively choose your own difficultly (many crosswords get harder on weekends).

I'm a young crossword junkie and I've been playing it for years.
My only complaint is that (for me at least) sometimes the interface bugs out and won't zoom properly.
Shortyz. Several new crosswords everyday - LA Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today. Including cryptic crosswords.
Does she like crossword puzzles? Shortyz is very good and you can download crosswords from various sources each day. I play it more than any other game I've ever owned.

Have not used in a while but used to be good. Several crosswords from various publications to chose from. No membership required but you can also access NY Times with a subscription.
There's no substitute, this is the absolute best. Try for a week and report back, please. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.totsp.crossword.shortyz
Edit: wait do you want to scribe the letters?
I'm surprised no one has ported Shortyz over from Android. Not only is it great, but it's opensource.

nice. if you've got an android phone or tab, i can't recommend shortyz crossword enough. very functional. can download crosswords of different kinds from multiple sources. don't think it's available on the iphone.
Yup! Also crosswords (for apps I like Shorty's and Wordscapes) and Minesweeper (DemonCrawl).
I used to use Shortyz Crossword on Android. It pulls from a ton of sources, including NYT if you have a subscription.
Android!
I am a nerd, so Shortyz Crosswords is a favorite. It aggregates crosswords from all the major papers and updates daily.
FlightView Free. Put in flight numbers and it shows you where the plane is in the air. Useless most of the time but fun if you're traveling or waiting on a traveler.
Morning Routine - an alarm app that requires you to scan one or more barcodes to turn the alarm off. So, you can set it to only shut the alarm off once you've scanned the barcode on your toothpaste to brush your teeth for example.
And, lastly, my preferred Period Tracker. Self explanatory.
Download a few days worth of crossword puzzles

I don't know which app OP uses but I use Shortyz and I really love it. You set which puzzles you want and there's no ads.
I do crosswords on my phone and use Shortyz
I also use Shortyz, I like the UI better and it also nabs the daily crosswords from different papers.
Shortyz, a crossword game.
It's a solid little app — especially for one that's just supported by one developer.
Not actively supported but this older Android app is solid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.totsp.crossword.shortyz
