I had to look up what D&D Beyond was but I don't quite get it. I need some explanation.
I have an android app that cost me like three bucks. It's a character sheet that autocalculates my numbers and applies them to where they go and even allows me to add some custom content.
I also have a free app for my spell descriptions.
What do I get from Beyond that these apps don't give me and how much does it cost?
I use Walter Kammerer's 5e Character Sheet app + Fifth Edition Spell Cards on all of my android devices. They're on iOS as well, I just don't apple.
I have never, ever purchased a mobile app... however, I did purchase Fifth Edition Character Sheet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en It intelligently gives you the options that are available to you when you level up, or change your class. Some things are "dumb" text boxes (i.e. your Inventory needs to be free-form enough for anything your DM will throw at ya!) but it does things like keeping track of your abilities used in a day, your hit-points, your stats and ability modifiers.
Again, I don't by apps... at all... but I did pay the buck or two to purchase this (It works 100% for lvl 1, but leveling-up is what you pay for... giving you plenty of time to try it out!).
> This thread has gone all the way up to 7 points, and right back down to zero. It's continually being up voted and down voted and it's weird.
Let's see:
You got the name of the app wrong.
You spelled Volo's wrong.
You didn't link to the app in the store.
And it's a repost from 3 days ago, posted by /u/droiddruid, the app's developer.
So I can see where the downvotes are coming from.
I've abandoned paper sheets for my 5th Edition Character Sheet App. Best money I have ever spent. The sheets are cluster fucks by comparison. My friend is always trying to get me to use Fight Club App for all the extra bells and whistles. No thanks. Can you make a level 20 character in 3-5mins? I can.
Edit: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Im currently a 5e player and I've abandoned paper character sheets. I use 2 apps on my phone that covers everything I need.
First is Fifth edition character sheet. An absolutely invaluable app. Great for testing builds, runs all the relevant mechanics while playing, and is quickly updated with all offical material.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
The second is D&D 5 spellbook cards for all my casting needs, custom spell lists, searches its great.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spellsdd5
I have a note pad on hand for adventure notes etc.
The Fifth Edition Character Sheet is the one I use on my tablet. It lets you keep track of stuff for free, but if you pay for it you get a built-in character builder that I've found very convenient. The only thing it doesn't give you is spell descriptions, so I use D&D 5 Spellbook Cards for that. It's a free app that lets you sort spell lists and gives you complete descriptions of spells. Pretty handy!
This is pretty good in terms of spitting out near-complete characters. You'll want to play with the equipment and refer to the PHB for picking backgrounds etc, but it does most of the work for you.
I'm surprised no one has said Fifth Edition Character Sheet by /u/droiddruid. It usually has just enough attention in this sub to get a mention.
Definitely the best character creator I've used. Obviously it auto fills the requisite values but it's the layout that does it for me. Extremely streamlined. Good amount of fiddling and customization available. I think k it has everything you need that you could theoretically run your character completely with it, no extra supplements needed for resources or inventory.
On top of the in app editing you can do for existing classes, you can pair it with his Fifth Edition Custom Builder to create classes, races, features, archetypes, etc.. to import in to the character sheet. Then using your custom settings, it'll follow the leveling path or features of the new content.
I've used it to create frameworks for much of the UA content, including a fully working Mystic setup. Asks you what disciplines you want at the proper level ups and everything.
Fifth Edition Character Sheet
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
By far the easiest and fastest way to create a character sheet. I bought this and it made creating characters and levelling them up seamless. Choose which archetype you are and then just press okay. The app fills up the rest of the details for you.
Not the most polished compares to Fight Club 5e but it's functional.
wow, there's a bunch of them. I think this one is the most popular amongst the people I play with.
5th edition character sheet is a great app. The free version lets you make lv 1 characters only with the paid version allowing you to level thosse characters up.
Fifth Edition Character Sheet: Google Play Store app that has a built in character builder for 5e. Doesn't currently have backgrounds or spells implemented yet though. It's free to download but have to pay for to the leveling up feature (goes to level 20 with class features)
on the app store is the fifth edition character sheet app if you want it on pc you can use blue stacks
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_GB http://www.bluestacks.com/
If you're on Android Fifth Edition Character Sheet is great. You can build your character in there using all official source books and do short and long rests automatically. If you get the upgraded version, which is £2 in the UK store, you can automatically level up too.
The only downside is that you have to manually enter spells if you're a class that doesn't always have a set set, and the spell effects aren't listed in there.
5e character sheet is something I've gotten a lot of use out of.
5e spellbook is great as well.
There are countless dice rolling apps to check out too.
If you have an android device, I highly suggest 5th edition character sheet.
A free character builder/management app that allows you to build/customize every part of your character. However, the free version only lets you create a level one character, while the paid version takes care of the leveling up by just selecting a couple of options. It's completely editable and customizeable to add in and keep track of spells, slots, abilities, hp, and whatever else you can think of.
It's also regularly updated and already includes the XGE character options.
My favorite is the Fifth Edition Character Sheet app for Android.
The trial version will let you make a level one character and manually level it, but I'll spurge for the $2.99 full version. They have a really good level up system. It prompts you for all you choices, and records all the class features when you get them. You can also manually override any of the auto-filled options, so you retain that flexibility.
It'll also compute all you Skills, Saves, Attacks, Armor Class, Spell DC, pretty much everything.
The only down-side is no built in Spell List, but they have an area to Manually input the spells, and will keep track of how many spells per day you have available.
All in all 9.5/10 would spend less than the cost of lunch on it again.
I'm new to D&D, but I use the Fifth Edition Character Creator (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app) to organize my characters and D&D Beyond so my DM can help me with things.
I like the feel of this so much more that the standard 5e character sheet app for Android ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app ).
There's a lot to be added, but you're off to a great start! It sounds like you've already got plenty planned for future improvements, but as a general guideline, I'd say look to that app and determine what it can do that yours doesn't do yet. If you can offer all the features of that one but on your interface, I'd say you'd have yourself the best character sheet app to date!
Great work! I'll definitely be sharing and buying the full version once it's more refined :)
I am using this app for android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=de
It's free character generation, but you have to pay 2,50€ or something to unlock leveling up and stuff. It's really worth it though. The developer updates the app frequently and it is extremely handy while playing. It automatically shows you your modifiers and all that stuff, leveling up is also a breeze. Give it a try.
There are smart phone apps that contain the character sheet, I've been using Fifth Edition Character Sheet for years. Solid.
It's not perfect, but I use the Fifth Edition Character Sheet app (Android version for me). You do have to pay for premium to level up, but at the very least you can generate a character pretty quickly, for free. The app is mostly intuitive, it takes care of applying bonuses and selecting feats and features and what-not without much fuss. The only gripe I have is it's not quite an all-in-one app, you'll need the books or a separate app for spells, and the paired-down feature descriptions are sometimes a little too paired down. But, if you already have a firm grasp of your character's features, it works perfectly fine.
I don't remember how much the "premium" version is but it's a cheap one time purchase and well worth it. I've had it for a couple years now and have gotten plenty of use out of it while quickly making various characters and deciding on one. It's also good for a quick NPC or "I forgot my character sheet, better remake the character super quick."
Hell, you can just use it instead of printing out a big character sheet because you can easily adjust your current health and available spell slots and whatnot. There's also a short rest/long rest built into the app.
Here's the android version. I ain't linking the Iphone version cause y'all already pay too much for your phone.
I've used the android app Fifth edition character sheet use this app to build the characters then fill out the character sheet. It'll help you understand how the process goes.
This isn't an answer to your question, however I've been using this app to make my characters. If your willing to pay a little money to use full features it really is fantastic. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
If you are still going to go paper though, I don't think there is a lot you can keep constant, because over time almost anything has the possibility to change. My thinking is always pencil.
This one is my favorite. It is for Android. You can use a free version that can build a level 1 character. It will calculate the ability scores, starting health, guide you through picking backgrounds and skills, etc. However, it won't automatically level them up in the free version, you will need to manually fill in ability scores and the likes to level above 1. However you can drop some change on the premium edition that has an automated level-up system (I think it was $1.99 or something, I bought premium a long time ago).
Its the best app by far that I've ever used, so I was happy to drop a little cash for the premium one. As a DM I use it to quickly throw characters together for NPCs or to help new players with character creation.
I like Fifth Edition Character Sheet App for android. I know its just and app and not a site but I use it on my kindle fire and have my spells on my phone using 5th Edition Spellbook.
If you have an android phone, this app makes character creation super easy. It takes you step by step, asking "what do you want here, what skills would your character be good at" etc. If you pay for the premium version, it even handles leveling up for you too. Highly recommended
Total noob here. The first time I ever heard the words "Kingdom Death Monster" was just a few weeks ago. However, after watching many a play through recently I think mobile app for character sheets is a great idea like similar ones that exist for D&D characters. I would love to sit down with a phone or ipad and play the physical game while swiping between characters and updating info without erasing over and over again.
I believe this is what you are referring to. I love this app, it is so useful, but I usually use it as a character record in between sessions rather than during sessions (still love that paper n pencil goodness)
I am currently using a program called Andy to emulate an android tablet, and using Walter Kammerer's Fifth Edition Character Sheet. Once you have signed into your google account, as you would with a phone, the app lets you build characters quickly and easily, and lets you import/export from google drive, so the same account on a phone would be able to use the app to build characters when you are away from your PC.
I was torn on the Cell Phone rule for awhile because almost ALL my players use the 5th Edition Character Creator (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en) Its also on Apple. Awesome app combined with the fact they have spell card apps as well, it was a little tough. We all talked it through though and now they only use it for that purpose instead of surfing the web, but in all honesty, I only had one player that was being a major problem with it.
On the music end, I've since then created a couple unique boss music playlists that DON'T have the player songs in them. They are much shorter and the normal playlist plays after, but for the first bit of boss combat, they know their theme song isn't coming to save them.
We use the app Fifth Edition Character Sheet and then I get them to upload their characters to Google drive and share them with me. Makes it easy to track.
Well, there's already this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
and this: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fight-club-5th-edition/id901057473?mt=8
so... yeah.
It's not nearly enough of an issue to avoid checking out Roll20. At a minimum, the free version is a sophisticated dice roller, text chat, google hangout with the ability to share pics/scans. That's more than enough on its own to merit use.
In addition, I use Fifth Edition Character Sheet to track character stat/development and D&D 5 Spellbook Cards to keep up with spells. Of course, paying $5/month lets Roll20 handle it, but I think I'd still like the apps.
link to google store page i think you need the premium version to get full functionality but it works like a charm
Thanks for doing what looks like a decent amount of work.
Is the data for the following app?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_US
Hmmm it seems to be working for me... here’s the URL: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fifth-edition-character-sheet/id967650851b And here’s the link to the android version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_US
You can get a 2000 arrows for 100 gp. That's 400 turns of a level 20 fighter with crossbow expertise who does nothing but attack every turn. Don't know about your fights but our fights rarely last longer than 10 turns so that's more than 40 encounters. When I was running a ranged fellow I just deducted a reasonable looking sum from his gold early in the campaign and never worried about it afterwards. It'll only matter if you're away from civilization for a while.
Before doing that I had a command line script that dealt with that whole also calculating the attack roll. this (needs a character made by this app) is a continuation of that which may help you since it has an attack counter but since I stopped counting ammunition by the time I made that, it doesn't count ammo, so if you switch to melee or different kinds of ammo, you'll be confused.
If you want to worry about short term counting you can keep a d20 nearby and turn it with every attack. When you reach 0, that's a quiver gone. Alternatively, whenever you get arrows, fill a bag with tokens/gummy bears. After every attack, remove a token/consume a bear. You can save the bag for later sessions that way and fill it up as you buy new ammo.
For example this app for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_GB
Last time I used it, I remember it having all of the character options. The basic version is free (which helps with creation, and then everything else is manual), and the upgraded version which does auto-leveliling is quite inexpensive.
I absolutely love the idea of a good and ATTRACTIVE character sheet. On android basically the only flexible option is 5th edition character sheet, but hoo boy is it ugly. I'll be backing this for sure.
If you all want to get super ambitious, an option that lets you send sheets and stats to other people would be awesome for DMs
I use an app on my phone. It requires minimal typing, the most interactive you need to be with your fingers is the character creation, when you take/heal damage, and when you level up. For the most part though, all I do is scroll left and right through pages.
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
Well, I've only DMd like 2 games, but I really like using this app called Fifth Edition Character Sheet, and that at least makes creating characters a lot easier, although not necessarily more fun... You could just ask them general questions about what they want to play or who they want to be, and then you can make a character for them that's close to that. You just ask them the broad stroke questions and then you can fill in the minor details for them.
Also, I'm not getting commission for the app or anything, I just really like it. Oh, and it's free until you try to level up, then they charge you like 4 or 5 bucks.
Ah, it's this Fifth Edition Character Sheet app, and the companion app made to make your own content for the Character Sheet. I actually found out about the sheet app from this subreddit.
until it arrives from amazon, check out this handy app! it has record sheet app, with all the character options from PHB, Sword Coast, Volo's Guide, and the new book. you can make starting characters with the free version, but for $2 or $3, you can level them up. Enjoy!
Whenever I have a bunch of new players, I have them use a simple phone app to create their characters, then plot all that (along with the flavor stuff) into a character sheet. Starting with the sheet can be pretty overwhelming, so it might be easier for them to have some automation in the start, then make adjustments and changes after they get a better understanding for it.
The app I use is called 'Fifth Edition Character Sheet': https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=no
IMHO part of this might of been the move to the "theater of the mind". Paying attention to everything and exercising the old imagination at the same time can be hard as an adult. At least it is for me and seems that way for the other beginners I've watched. But again I've only played 5e so my opinion might be invalid.
I did find one thing that really helped me is using D&D apps to narrow my focus. There's an app called Fifth Edition Character Sheet that I just love. It makes creating and keeping track of a character dead simple. Even auto levels if you buy the full version.
It's only shortcoming for me is spell/ability tracking. It has the fundamentals, but you have to manually add spells and some abilities. I use Spell Book Burned for keeping track of character spells. It would be great if the two had file compatibility or something and I could just import a spell from Burned to Fifth. But still both make it much easier to remain focused without info overload as a new player.
As a note to #2, there are a few great apps / resources out there to help with character creation. My players all use the this one which is pretty great. The one issue I have with it is that UA stuff isn't in there yet, but that's hardly the end of the world.
I'd check out this website too, if you're all first-timers. Not that I'm saying you have to optimize characters, but using this as a reference for things that might perform better/worse is helpful, and it'll help keep somebody from creating a character that's so sub-optimal that it isn't fun to play.
Yeah i use Fifth Edition Character sheet v1.65g off google Play store. by: Walter Kammerer The premium (paid version) allows u to level your character within the app. Also, allows you to import/export your characters on google drive. Have a look: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
This app has both iPhone and android versions, and it works fairly well. As an added benefit, it lets you make multiple characters for free!
The app I'm talking about is this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app I find it very useful even without the custom data. If you have the full version it can do your level ups for you and track nearly all of your resources. Pretty much all of my PCs us it.
There is a really cool android app called Fifth Edition Character Sheet that walk you through everything. Really handy app to use. Downside, you can't print it.
Yes you can uses official sources aside from PHB. You can even use homebrews or Unearthed Arcanas if your DM allows.
As for reference, there is this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app - that automates the process of character making and has updated recently to include all supplements (back then it was just Elemental Evil, but now has SCAG and Volo's Guide to Monsters). Really useful if you don't have access to all the books such as myself.
He just emailed back and said he uses Fifth Edition Character Sheet, but he said it lacks a lot of the fancy functionality of Fight Club. Maybe try it out for a bit and see what it's capable of? I'm sure there must be other highly rated apps out there.
5th Edition Character Sheet by Walter Kammerer.

5th edition character sheet, to keep track of my players stats when it's time to level them up
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
And this spellbook app to tell them exactly why they can't use Prestidigitation to snap the BBEGs neck
This app is awesome for character building and (as far as I've experienced) has been AL legal
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fifth-edition-character-sheet/id967650851?mt=8
If you're referring to the app they currently use, this came up a little while back: https://twitter.com/griffinmcelroy/status/733415093392695296
And here's the Android version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Our group uses this app, we all really like it. Absolutely worth the money.
How I cope:
First, I got the paid version of Fifth Edition Character Sheet on the Google Play store. This let's you make characters and level them up, while the app takes care of most of the math, and prompts you when it's time to make a choice (archetype, totem, etc.)
Then, I downloaded Nox to my desktop PC. Nox is an Android OS emulator that you can connect to a Google account. I connected the emulator to the same account I use on my phone, downloaded my paid version of 5eCS to the emulator, and just keep my copies of PHB, Sword Coast, and Elemental Evil open while I make a bunch of characters.
It hasn't been this easy since Baldur's Gate 2.
He also has an app on the Google play store. Really great app of throwing characters together very quickly, just wish it had a stat block export, or export to PDF.
I haven't actually used it in a game, but I've found this app to be useful for mocking up characters and NPCs for games I run. IIRC it will generate a level 1 character for you, and the paid version will automatically level up for you.
I'm sure there's also tons of threads with more recommendations if you search the sub!
This is correct. Griffin's confirmation on Twitter: https://twitter.com/griffinmcelroy/status/733415093392695296
And here's the Android version if anybody wants it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Our group uses this app, we all really like it. Absolutely worth the money.
I use an app on my Android device called "Fifth Edition Character Sheet." I don't know if it's available on iOS devices.
It has a pretty well done character creator with every released race, class, and subclass (to my knowledge). It allows for custom backgrounds, and is fully editable. The design is clean and user-friendly.
Here's a link so you know what to look for: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
It does not have a database of spells or armor, so those still need to be manually entered, but other than that it's free and easy to use, as long as you don't mind using a phone or tablet to use it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en. Also available on iOS. It's not as flashy and features such as spells aren't as fleshed out. But it's pretty good for creating a character especially for people who are new to the game.
(Assuming Android) There are actually a few of these apps on the playstore. I personally use Fifth Edition Character Sheet. It levels up for you automatically but you have to pay for that feature. (I think its only about $2) Another one is Squire - D&D Character Manager. I've never used this but it looks promising.
Fifth Edition Character Sheet is what I've been using lately. It's got a sister DM app that I've been loving recently, but the character sheet app is very straightforward and has great lvl 1 chargen support and a nice equipment section.
Also D&D 5 Spellbook Cards is great for looking up all your spellcaster's spells.
edit: forgot to include a link for the spellbook cards one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spellsdd5&hl=en
My favourite is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I pay for it to get level upper. I only wished it could export in a PDF for my DM (as she likes to have a sheet infront of her)
Fifth Edition Character Sheet by Walter Kammerer
That, coupled with searchable PDFs (I paid to get my physical books scanned and converted at a local print shop) loaded onto my tablets, we rarely use paper at my table. I don't use a projector, we do theater of the mind with a whiteboard + warhammer figures for major combat encounters.
I personally use the Fifth Edition Character Sheet for Android. It sounds like most character creators are sent cease and desist letters and are taken down quickly.
Just to give an alternative:
If you and your friends don't need the capabilities of Roll20, and aren't particularly insistent on having a battlemap and tokens, the Skype app + a character sheet app (5E example) could be all you need.
If you do want the battlemap and tokens, but roll20 doesn't work for you, I'm afraid the options are rather limited. If you have strong technical chops, you could hack yourself some screen-sharing scheme on a desktop to have another virtual tabletop app streamed to your tablet screen while the native skype app on the tablet is running, or some other elaborate contraption.
I spent years using physical character sheets, but was recently converted to digital. I started using this one on my Android tablet. It does a really good job of automatically calculating bonuses and arranges everything in easy to read screens. And I haven't worn a hole in my hit points box from all the erasing.
It also has a really straight forward character creator and level up system. Once you select all your options, every field is customizable, so you can still get as crazy as your DM will allow.
I use the Fifth Edition Character Sheet app, its really good, and the premium (3 bucks) has an Auto Level system that is super baller Edit https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
I use Fifth Edition Character Sheet for Android.
The free version allows you to generate characters and manually level them up, and a one time $3.00 purchase in-app allows you to level up, make your choices, and have them be automatically applied.
This one is the dominant app in my group. Since it's free and unlicensed a lot of the specific text is changed, so some of the rules require disambiguation through looking it up online.
I have an an app called 5th edition character sheet.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Single developer has all source materials. Has pretty much everything you need.
I have Fifth Edition Character Sheet on my phone. It's a very cheap one time payment, and has most of the stuff you'd want in a character builder, though the interface isn't the prettiest.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
This one just has everything and only costs a few bucks to buy for unlocking auto leveling. You can back up your sheets to google drive too.
I use it every week
Best advice I can offer, without walking through it step by step, is try this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Let's you build free first level characters with a menu interface. Great app.
I love https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app to make characters, and I HIGHLY recommend the class character sheets bundle, which makes writing down the characters 100x easier (not kidding!) https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/232835
Maybe he hates needing a website and not just having ownership of the sheet. Maybe he hates you having access to everything and wants his private thoughts private. Maybe he hates how Beyond's character sheets work, or how the website feels on his devices. Maybe he hates that the website keeping a sheet won't automatically update without him paying out the nose for digital books.
Maybe he just hates typing.
You can test at least some of this by presenting him with this app which works on phone and tablet without internet and is completely privately controlled by him. Try introducing it to the group, though, not him specifically. Present it as a method to back up their characters on their phones as a safety measure. Tell them that it costs only a few bucks for full access to all current classes and races, and can automatically level up their characters, presenting all the options right there with no need to look anything up.
See if he switches to that. Bunch of my freinds who said they prefered paper over things like dnd beyond swapped over after a few too many sessions of not having something or other, having left it at home in the book they were doing research in.
Not sure about iOS but for Android I usethis some of the race or spell names may be a little off but it's all how it's supposed to be
It would be more work for you, but lay out what the classes are beforehand, find out what everyone wants to play, and make up individual booklets of the class features and their available spell list (if applicable). That way, you don't have to throw whole books at them, but they'll still have a handy little reference for specifically their stuff.
Or, get them to use a character creation app. It'll automatically track stats, and drastically reduce character creation time.
I use this one. You gotta pay for it to level up, but it'll walk them through all the hard bits of character creation with its prompts. I use this app constantly, it's well worth the price.
Use myth-weavers on your laptop. It's free. If you need apps to use on your mobile phone try reroll or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_US&gl=US
this.
If you're not opposed to smartphone apps, i like the following two
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herd.ddnext
Not really.
The closest I know of is Fifth Edition Character Sheet which does allow for management of character spells. You could create a custom character that has the same stats and such as your players and then use the app to manage their spell slot usage. But it's primary use is to be a digital character sheet.
If you're open to it, look up the 5th edition character sheet app by Walter Kammerer. It makes it super easy to keep track of everything from stats to spells to equipment to features/perks. It can even automatically level you up (that requires the paid version though) its helped my new players immensely. And it's available on both iOS and Android
I know it and I prefer Fifth edition character sheet . Anyway I need to create new contents, not to use an app to manage a character sheet.
My favorite character sheet https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app And my favorite spell book https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.delsorboilario.dnd
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Here is a easy to use app I've been using for about 4 years for character creation. It could help you get started on your character.
May I suggest https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app Its a very easy to use character building app I have used for four years. It stream lines the creation process. It is in beta so some names are different. But I love it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
&
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.delsorboilario.dnd
These two free apps make it so much easier for me. Love them.
Thank you so much for letting me know it's back up! I did play around with it today and I really like the character creation!!! It's nice to have the skills and attributes on the same page too :) I'm used to having them on separate pages with the 5th Edition Character Sheet app. Will you be implementing a level up button like this app has or will everything have to be manually updated(If I might have missed the button if you do have one)? Not a huge deal not having it, but it's one of my favorite features in the other app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
This is the app I use currently but I'm willing to try out new apps for example importing spell cards would be nice although this app doesn't haev that
The kind of imports that the Fifth Edition Character Sheet app on Android accepts is most likely not compatible with the imports made for MPMB's Character Record Sheets. I have no idea what kind of import the Android app requires, nor can I find any API or syntax explanation with a quick Google search. Transcribing one over to the other format is probably possible, but most likely not easy and could be rather time-consuming.
Without more info on how the Android app does its thing, I can't really say more. You are probably better off asking somebody who is more familiar with that app.
Between 4e and 5e? The math of the underlying game was gutted and replaced. The structure of classes was completely redesigned. And lots and lots of details were substantially changed. It's pretty much a whole new game under the hood, with only the labels still being similar.
The best character generator used to be Pathguy's, but WotC made him restrict it to only what's available for free in the Basic Rules. For similar reasons, they've gone around shutting down most other character generators.
Of course this made more sense when they were developing their own online tools. That project has been shuttered for now, and WotC seems content to farm out the work to third party programs like Fantasy Grounds, however that'll cost you the whole price of the book again, on top of Fantasy Grounds' subscription. So, at the moment, the only 5e character generator that covers all the options in the book that's available for free is an Android app. As an app, it doesn't produce a sheet for you, but it has all the information there. Edit: J/K, it doesn't select the spells for you, hmm...
Hopefully WotC will come around and make an official tool of some kind, or at least contract for one that doesn't involve paying for everything twice.
This is the one I used, I paid the money for the auto-level up and find it useful.
Perhaps you could try this app.
Here's the gold standard app right now, the 5e Character Sheet by W. Kammerer on Android and iOS
It's free, you long-press the info boxes to change things and it auto-completes the math for you.
You can also upgrade for like 2 moneybucks for an auto-leveling feature but you don't need it. I just support the developer and bought it because I like it.
There's also a spell cards app out there for android and iOS that work wonders. I use 5th Edition Spellbook.
W. Kammerer also has 5e DM Tools out but I don't use them. 5e Fight Club is good too, they both allow you to import files for monsters and lets you create encounters but I much prefer the Monster Manual because I like the pretty pretty pictures. Like the one for Lycanthropes that is Gaston and Beast fighting, based on the movie Beauty and The Beast
Mobile apps: I use Android so these are all Android.
Best Desktop Programs: Don't know of any.
Cheat Sheets: This one (Click the entries for more details.)
Understanding common problems with the system: Not many out there. It is a very refined system. There are a few things here and there you may run in to, but we can assist with those as they come up.

You don't need anything else.
Aw man that sounds dank. I would love to join, but I know I will be moving away sometime in the next year. I would be more than happy to fill in at times if needed!
For anyone who is thinking of joining this campaign and is nervous about appearing inexperienced or clueless or whatever, don't worry! The game itself is absolutely straight forward, and is whatever you and your DM make it. This isn't an us vs. them game, but an adventure that you and the DM make together. Here are some resources that I can suggest to make you more acquainted with the game. These should cover everything that keep most new players from playing.
Character creation - android 5e character creation sheet is an absolute godsend for myself, and the people I run in my campaign. It lets you create your character from scratch, and takes into account all the modifiers from the start. With the paid version (super cheap), it will also let you level while prompting you when to add stat bonuses or feats. Furthermore, you can import and export your Player Character (PC) across all your devices.
Dice - Crit Dice always you to roll virtual dice if you don't have a set of your own. If you don't have a dice set yet, I would personally recommend 1d4, 3d6, 3d8, 3d10, 1d12, and 1d20. You can get dice from "Get Some Game - NODA", "Your Local Game Store - Stallings?", "Spandex City - Mountain Island", "Fodder Cannon Games - Pineville Matthews", and "Carolina Tabletop Games - Pineville Matthews". Buy dice that speak to you and you can thank me later.
Roll20 - Forget how far you can jump? Fear not, roll 20 is the best place to quick check your rules, or to look up an item or spell. It has most everything at your fingertips. Do not forgo a physical players handbook (one being sold in flea market friday right now) as it is a much faster resource in all honesty.
Finally, and most importantly. At no point in time should anyone feel uncomfortable. If you ever do, just say so. If someone at the table isn't having fun, then the whole purpose is lost to all inevitably. This is a place where everyone can gather and have fun. Suspend yourself in another world and become a champion of the people, a daring criminal, or anything else! Your gender, demographic, or whatever else is totally lost when you become your PC. Essentially, all are welcome.
It's actually pretty laid back, especially when starting a new campaign and creating characters. Everyone helps each other.
You should lurk over on /r/DnD. They have a wiki with resources. You need access to some form of the basic rules or even better, a Players Handbook.
If you are able to get a copy of the Players Handbooks (PDF versions exist), start reading it! It explains the various races, classes, weapons, tools, etc. It will walk you through making a character. Also, I highly recommend the app Fifth Edition Character Sheet because it lets you plug in what you want and does a lot of the hard work for you.
Of course, to begin you are going to need a set of pretty dice, like these. Picking out dice is fun! They should feel special to you- there is a lot of superstition about your personal dice and luck :)
By the way, I am not affiliated with Borderlands even though my name is Kamielle (it's got a 'K' not a 'C'), but they have all the books and lots of dice and stuff for DnD. I am sure someone there, an employee or a patron, would be excited to talk to you about it.
Answer: One person runs the campaign, the dungeon master (DM). DMing is doing that. They often create the campaign themselves and play the monsters that the group fights.
My preferred app is Fifth Edition Character Sheet, for Android.
How far is this away from what you're hoping for? I've found it very useful.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
There's an awesome android app that does a great job
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
5e is so much easier to make a character than 4 or even 3.x. I can make a character without help of a program in less than 10 minutes.
Now if your players need a program to help make a character check out the links below.
Forged Anvil Excel spread Sheet http://www.enworld.org/forum/rpgdownloads.php?do=download&downloadid=1234
Fifth Edition Character Sheet Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Fifth Edition Character Sheet iOS https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fifth-edition-character-sheet/id967650851?mt=8
Fifth Edition Character Sheet is a good app.
I just use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app it's p good.
I use Fifth Edition Character Sheet for my Character Sheets and creation. I like the ease of making a character, the plethora of options, and, once I paid the $2.99, the ease in leveling up. And, on Android, it's really easy to back up to my Google Drive so I can move it to other devices.

The downside is the spellbook is not built in, so you need to enter the spells in one-by-one, and it still won't tell you any info about the spell. I'm still looking for a Spellbook option that is easy to use.

They also provide a DM Tool and Custom Builder. I haven't used either, but the Custom Builder will be needed for the Artifacer/Mystic class, or if you want to Homebrew some subclasses.
As far as apps for creation go, Fifth edition character sheet is by far my favorite I've used. OrcPub is second. I don't have any experience with it but WotC's official app/site DnD Beyond is out now and offers character creation.
Well this is the guy I've been watching. He has videos pinpointing specific mechanics and goes over them slowly. Helped me wrap my head around using Spell Points as opposed to Spell Slots, which made my life much easier.
Also Matt Mercer recently started a GM guide video series that helps you prepare and get into the mindset of roleplaying. He runs a show called Critical Role on the same channel where he and a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors get together and play this incredible game.
Not to mention all the resources available on the sidebar. Whether for phone or computer they have most of what you need to get started. I've found this app particularly useful in character creation. (Here's an iOS version if you need it)
And if you sort this subreddit by top of all time a lot of people invest their time and resources into making their lives easier and make their innovations available to the public like easier to read character sheets and cheat sheets for both players and DMs. It's been fantastic delving into this world. Sorry for rambling, I'm just super excited.
Small Edit: I'm also using this program to run the game itself. Not sure how well it will work but the less paper for me to handle the better. My kids are in a "color daddy's things" phase.
Here's the gold standard app right now, the 5e Character Sheet by W. Kammerer on Android and iOS

Oh also! Since it's 5e, check out the 5th Edition Character Sheet app by Walter Kammerer, on Android and iOS.
That, along with the Spell Cards app (also on Android), are super handy for keeping track of D&D stuff without needing physical papers and whatnot. Buy dice though. Nothing beats the physical feel of rolling a d20 hoping you don't die.
You could try this in the meantime.
For character sheets, I am a huge fan of this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Fifth Edition Character Sheet for Android has it I believe.
I think he's talking about the "Fifth Edition Character Sheet". Here is the link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/493249/mythbusting-game-design-and-copyright-trademarks-a
You cannot copyright game mechanics. Only things like specific verbiage from a rulebook or artwork can be copyrighted. As long as there isn't any art or text directly taken from one of the original source books, he's completely golden. That's how the android app 5th edition character sheet has kept going.
I use the 5e character builder app on android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Download an app and keep your character sheet on your phone
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I use the app from the Google Play Store for the Fifth Edition Character Sheet
If you or anyone else is still interested in this, the "Fifth Edition Character Sheet" for Android and Apple is an amazing way to get started. Combined with the 5th Edition Spellbook for Android or Fight Club for Apple and you're gold.
I haven't used Fight Club personally but it works for full character sheets too, and have heard good stuff about it.
Also, either the mobile Cheat Sheet for 5e for Android, or Complete Reference for D&D 5e for Android and Apple for all the monsters and rules if you get stuck. They're amazing for helping with this stuff!
Kobold Fight Club is an amazing encounter builder, and Improved Initiative is absolutely the best tool for tracking fights.
Enjoy!
Vou passar alguns pontos chaves que me ajudaram:
Feito. Agora o nome do sujeito? Sempre me sai um nome fraco.
Leia o livro do mestre.
I use the fifth edition character sheet app (android, iOS) to make the character.
The default view from this app is nice and compact on your phone (see images on the google play page). If you want a PDF at hand, you can go to this page and use the "pretty PDF" option to get a filled editable sheet of your character created in the app.
I'd suggest you to stick with using the app and updating the pdf from the page but that is not necessary as the output remains editable. I do think it is too much work to update your inventory or other things that often change through the app so pdf editing could be used for things like that.
If you are interested in dice roll automation as well, try this or this (offline version, faster). Like the previous link, it uses characters exported from the app and allows you to automate dice rolls for your character.
Personally I prefer to have the mobile app as my permanent character sheet as it doesn't create clutter on the table or on my screen and use the dice roll automation tool for dice rolls and temporary changes like spell slots or action surges. So my regular pipeline doesn't have a pdf. I do use a text file to keep track of my inventory though as it is annoying to write to the app in game and pdf slots for inventory is often small.
Disclaimer: I made both of the supplementary apps to the mobile app linked here. When I notice something I don't like about them I have the ability to fix them while waiting for my turn or at least know that by next week it'll be gone, so you may experience more frustration. I have been fairly responsive to requests to fix things though
I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
It works pretty well
My friend uses this one and seems to really like it:

Hi all!
A few friends and I have made a new weekly podcast about, you guessed it, Dungeons and Dragons.
Rather than being an "actual play" show, ours is more of a news and information show, where we cover official WotC news and releases, apps and items that are handy for players and DMs, tips for players and DMs, interviews and more!
We'd love it if you were to check us out and give us any feedback! Bear in mind this is the first episode and there's still plenty of great content in the pipeline to come.
Also, thanks to the mods for letting us post here :)
... to the third entry into the Heroes Rise chronicle. This episode was recorded on Saturday, 9th December 2017, and made available for download on Wednesday, 13th December 2017 at heroesrisepodcast.com
Ryu, Lennon and Ostron are back once again this week, despite Ryu having more mucus in her head than a gelatinous cube. Speaking of Ryu, first up she looks into her Adventurer’s Pack and brings us an app for players who prefer a more digital approach to their characters. Then we take a look at some D&D news as we bring you some Sage Advice and some Lost Notes from XGE. Next, we take a Short Rest and hear some Wisdom from the Masters who tell us all about Dying Players Everywhere; before finally finishing off the show by looking into the Scrying Pool to see what you have to say.
> What do you think the Next Big Thing will be for 5e D&D? Is there an older adventure you’d like to see remade? A setting that’s near-and-dear to you? Do you want to see D&D 5e move into a completely different setting entirely?
This app is also handy, it has a character builder https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
A few questions, all for 5e (one gameplay-related):
With the Alert feat, is an Elf in their trance considered conscious or unconscious? The info for Trance says that they are in a semiconscious state (PHB, page 23), but for the purpose of Alert, would that be considered conscious or unconscious?
When looking things up online, what is the best general wiki to use? I'm currently using this one for general stuff, along with the Forgotten Realms Wiki for lore-related stuff
What are your favourite apps (Android) for character sheets, spells, etc? I'm currently using Fifth Edition Character Sheet and Squire.
Are there any apps that have non-OGL content?
If you use Android, there's a great character generation app that my whole table uses: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
I like this one for character sheets. It covers all races/classes from the PHB, EE, and SCAG. They'll probably update to include Volo's soon, though I'm not sure when. (note: it's free for 1st level characters, but you have to buy the full version to level up - Protip: install Google Opinion Rewards to get the app upgrade for free).
I prefer to use this app to keep track of spells though, as it has all the spells from the PHB and EE pre-installed (it's missing the 4 cantrips from SCAG, but it's easy to add new spell cards), and can keep track of spells known/prepared and available spell slots for multiple characters.
My favorite android apps:
I can't vouch for the DM tools, but the same guy made the character creator which is absolutely excellent.
5e character sheet: Allows auto levelling up if you pay https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
5th edition spellbook: allows you to create your own spellbooks as well and has everything. spell slot tracking isn't that good but meh. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spellsdd5&hl=en
Not an app but a reference sheet. super useful. I try to have all payers keep this open somewhere so they'll stop pestering me with questions https://crobi.github.io/dnd5e-quickref/preview/quickref.html
If android is an option:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
If you have android I like Fifth Edition Character Sheet by Walter Kammerer.
For in a browser, I like Dungeon Masters Vault though it has a bit of a learning curve.
And finally, for PC and Printable sheets I really like MorePurpleMoreBetter, it's paid, but it's really fantastic.
If you have an Android phone I like this app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I've used this app for the longest time, and it's rarely let me down.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I use this one on Android but I'm sure there's tons more.
This is what I use and enjoy it a lot. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
link here is the Android one I really like this app and the full version is good
Fifth Edition Character Sheet is what you're looking for.
Notes: OneNote, you can link to other pages and organize things in several layers of hierarchy. Make a Section Group of "Prime Material" and Sections for each continent/major area and Pages for each city. Don't think this city fits the continent's theme? Move the page to another continent! Got an NPC in town you don't remember the voice of? Put a link on the town page and their details are a click away. Combine with cryrid's SRD and you've got a beast of a note taker. Can make custom stat blocks and all sorts of stuff.
Files/handouts: Google Drive or One Drive. Lets me add in files with custom backgrounds, deity sets, even digital books to share with players.
Encounter building: kobold fight club or dndbeyond. I prefer KFC, not least of which for the initialism.
Character sheets: there's a digital fillable pdf version of the default somewhere, there's also apps like Reroll and Fight Club 5E
Here is great unofficial Character Builder I've been using for years with great feedback: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I mean the fifth edition character sheets is nice, as long as you are using what is preloaded. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
This is a great character building app I've used for years.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I use pen and paper by default, but this is an app I use as a backup
Does anyone have custom files for the Android apps Fifth Edition Character Sheet or Fight Club 5th Edition? I understand sharing content outside of the base rules is not allowed. I'm just looking for XMLs or JSONs that include some changes from the UA Class Feature Variants, which I believe are fair game for sharing. I'm specifically interested in the new Ranger features.

That last one there is the best one so far
If you go through them and look for where something is wrong you should get alot of ideas
Also will this be an app or a website and if website will it be mobile friendly
I was looking through comments and I saw homebrew pop up alot and I had the idea to suggest letting people make and publish homebrew for other to use and vote on if balenced or not
I would love the see the end product when it's done, will you be posting your progress by any chance
Are you sure you are posting this in the right sub? This subreddit is for MPMB's Character Record Sheet, which is a PDF and not an app. There is a popular app called "Fifth Edition Character Sheet" for android, might it be that you are asking about that?
Note that MPMB's Character Record Sheet doesn't use JSON files (.json) but JavaScript files (.js). The "Fifth Edition Character Sheet" app for android does use JSON files, hence my suspicion that you are looking in the wrong place.
Anyway, for adding any of the Plane Shift article's content to MPMB's Character Record Sheet, look in the top sticky post.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
I've used this for a while and don't have any complaints. Worth the purchase imo
For an app that's very first time player friendly I recommend this app. It basically does all the leg work when it comes to racial bonuses, what items you can take, class and background features ect. It lets you either roll your stats, use a point system, or just your standard stats. Really you could use it to make your character and transfer everything to an actual sheet too if your worried about their phones becoming a distraction.

We tried Dndbeyond like suggested, but due to me owning the physical editions of everything we couldn't create his character. I didn't find any readable pdfs, but I did find a phone/tablet app. On apple and android it is called Fifth Edition Character Sheet. It works nicely for the needs. The only issue we have encountered it sometimes it doesn't save changes unless you switch screens a few times after the update.
Sorry for not updating before, it slipped my mind.

I use this character sheet:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Makes it very easy to make a new pc since it has all the races currently in the game and it automatically calculates their stat bonuses and traits. I'd recommend it to anybody who is new to D&D and is feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything that comes with making a new characters.
What I'm talking about is third party but I've seen it mentioned several times around here. It's literally called fifth edition character sheet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app

There is a one time purchase to level up characters, but it was well worth it for me.
As for leveling up NPCs, that is up to you and your players. If you have one you all really like, they can be a reoccurring character, or they can just be one and done.
Thanks. I found a fairly good resource for Android called Fifth Edition Character Sheet which mostly just needs labels fixed and a few other improvements that shouldn't be too major to be great. I purchased it last night because some of the ads make Talkback lag insanely, but the price was good and the features will be handy. As it is I was able to create a fairly basic High Elf Wizard, roll my stats and add all the improvements the DM gave us to start. I'm going to try the D&D Beyond character sheet today as well, as that may be accessible. That would be the best option, as blind people's characters can keep up in online campaigns with no fuss.
Everyone in my group has a copy of their character sheet on their phone, using an app like this one, just in case they forget it. Of course, this may not work if your table has a rule banning phones, but I personally would make an exception.
I usually use this app for my phone if i dont have my laptop handy.

5e/app related
I am looking for a Circle of Spores JSON file for use in this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en (Fifth Edition Character Sheet by Walter Kammerer) and wanted to know if someone had made one, or if there are recent collections of them anywhere. Collections I found online for the app were from 2017 didn't include more recent UA releases. Thanks!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app good one for Android with built in character builder.
For Android there is this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
D&D 5e Character Sheet for Android (don't know about iOs though). It's a miracle machine.

Realise I'm a bit late to the party here - but would you guys consider releasing custom files for the Fifth Edition Character Builder App?
There are a couple of character apps that I've used. All of them require some digging for game files though, and IIRC they require a buck or so for full functionality.

Not so much 5e, but when I played AD&D 2e, I thought I was hot shit for making my own character sheet by hand, and then running off 50 copies at the library. Cost me a couple bucks. So I made them all characters. Either we didn't have the array or I didn't know it, so I used the '4d6, drop lowest' method. I didn't care if I rolled low, or high. What I rolled was the stat, and I didn't rearrange them. Each set of stats told a story, and I used that to shape the character. The stats came before everything. Race and class, as well as things like occupation, were determined by the stats. Most of them never got used.
If you're using MPMB's fully automated generator, it's stupidly easy to make characters for 5e. I used their generator to make 18 generic characters for my DM kit. Basically characters that new players could just pick up and play, if they don't want to roll one. And there are three classes (fighter, rogue, wizard), and each contain three races (human, elf, and dwarf), and each of those contain two variants. All the wizards have the same spellbook, but otherwise everyone has slightly different equipment, and the bonds/flaws area is completely different for everyone. All that took about one hour.
There are also phone apps... I have an iPhone, so I use Fifth Edition Character Sheet on that, but it is also available on Android. I use both platforms, but haven't tried the Android version yet, though it looks the same. The interface is not very modern, but it's useful and you can run a character from your smartphone. It does have character generation options as well, so you can build them as well. And it has Google Drive import-export, so you can share them across devices. So maybe you have an Android phone and an iPad Mini or something, you can export from one and import into the other. I don't think there's a limit to the characters you can have.
There already exists an excellent character creator app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_GB
Saving this thread. This is exactly the project i'm doing to finish technical high school.
The ones i've tried are Squire, this one, and D&D Charsheet
Squire's the one with the most info, but i don't think the interface is too intuitive and pleasing to look at and i feel some parts of it take too long and are annoying to change. It also can roll dice for you, which is something almost everything else lacks.
The second one is the best one. It's simple and has almost all types of info i want, but i think the magic book aspect could be better, maybe make it an entirely different section of the app.
D&D Charsheet is pretty but it lacks the features the previous 2 had and isn't as automatic.
In my project, i want to make a mobile, fully offline, auto-filling 5e character sheet with magic book and dice rolling functionalities.
This guy:

I wasn't clear, but the name is literally just Fifth Edition Character Sheet. It's really fantastic, but the full version (which enables automatic leveling past level one) is a dollar or something like that. One of the best purchases I've made in a while.
Edit: there's also a version for iPhone
I personally use Roll20 for all maps and character markers. Using Roll20 also makes it easier for players to join in remotely either directly through Roll20 or using Skype.
I use Dungeon Painter Studio for creating custom maps or I just find something from a Google image search that matches what I'm doing.
If you want to go with miniatures, I've seen quite a few recommendations for Reaper Miniatures here and on other forums. If you wanted to design a few custom miniatures there's also Hero Forge. If you're looking for tilesets there's Dwarven Forge.
There's also a new official online tool called D&D Beyond which is still in beta. For now it's just an online reference but more tools are being added in the future.
For character sheets and spell books I use two separate android apps. The first one for character sheets is called Fifth Edition Character Sheet. The second one for a spell book is called 5th Edition Spellbook.

Never shared an app before, that should do it
Here are D&D apps I use myself and found excellent:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gfs.qd&hl=en
I think they mean JSON files for the UA to import into the Fifth Edition Character Sheet and if anyone has converted the complete UA to JSON, they should post it.
It's a little more than just spell slots and HP, in fact it's a whole sheet, but it's fantastic! Fifth Edition Character Sheet which you can find here.
Any plans on posting the source to GitHub?
To be honest I use a combination of
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
And
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spellsdd5
I suppose the tool I'm missing is an items tables and equipment database tool.
I'm a fan of this one, well worth the premium upgrade IMO:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
EDIT: I just re-read your comment and saw you wanted an online sheet. This app is not online, it stores all data locally so it may not be what you're looking for
There is a really good app for that on the app store. You can select what you want and it does everything automatically, Also has a levelling feature. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en_GB
Yup.. I figured it out and came to see if anyone had replied so I could delete my shame. Thank you for helping though!
And.. the name is in the title. Literally. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
At first I thought this was a advert for the "original" Fifth Edition Character Sheet, but then realized it was another one.
Wish you all the best though.
I use this app or the in built character sheet in roll20, before that when I just used scrap paper I'd use maybe two sheets at a time and remake my sheet when it got too grubby, never used a 'proper' formatted character sheet.
Then how are apps like fifth edition character sheet still alive then. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
The 5e Character Sheet App is free and does all of that, including homebrew, SCAG, EE and beyond.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fifth-edition-character-sheet/id967650851?mt=8
5e PHB, you already got the link. Download the 5e Character Sheet App (Android) (iOS). Watch Critical Role. Episode 1 is at the bottom of the page. Audio is shit for the first bit, then gets better. Show is a homebrew-ISH 5e game ported from Pathfinder. Check out local FLGS (Friendly Local Game Shops) for open Adventurer's League games. Check Roll20 for open LFG groups. Drink ale.
i use this android app (because it auto fills the infomation so you could just transfer it to a paper sheet) in combination with the book and an character idea.
This one works really well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
If you're technically minded and have the ability to run Excel, then Forged Anvil is the go. It's advanced, however, so you may want to skip it for something a bit simpler, like the Android Fifth Edition Character Sheet.
Or you could simply use Adobe Acrobat to open up Tall Cold Glass of Current Standard 1.4 and fill in the details yourself to print out whenever you need.
If you have an Android device, there is a fantastic app you can try: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
I'd say there's two solid 5e character sheet apps (at least on android)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
and
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herd.ddnext
Personally I prefer the book and since it sounds like you are planning to buy a copy I find using sticky book tabs to be very convenient, I think I add another tab every few session. I play a Wizard so in addition to that printed out all my current spells and made them into a little booklet. Personally I find using to much technology makes the game less social, but that might just be my group, since some people sit on their phone or tablet the entire time. I have however used this app, here is another app that i have tried out but did not like as much, i only have the app as a precaution for when I inevitable forget to bring my character sheet one night.
This may not be 100% what you're looking for, but on Android I've had good success with Fifth Edition Character Sheet
A little different but Fifth Edition Character Sheet is so useful in my weekly dnd games
There is a pretty good one on android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Not sure what everybody is going on about. 2 Days ago you made this post, then the app must have been up for only a day or so. Here it is, the actual link on the store. I installed it (previously had paid for it) and I retained my paid privileges. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
> Fifth Edition Character Sheet by Walter Kammerer
our group uses fith edition character sheet for PC: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
and DM Minion for 5th Edition for DM on a tablet: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.goatheadsoftware.dm5e&hl=en
I've been playing 5th Edition D&D recently, and the Fifth Edition Character Sheet is really nice! So much better than hand writing a sheet. I'd suggest it to anyone playing D&D right now.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app
Great android app to help your creation.
If you really really can't be bothered build your characters using the manual, I recommend you get the app Fifth Edition Character Sheet which makes creating, managing, and (if you pay the modest cost for the full version) leveling up your character extremely easy. The only thing it doesn't really help you with is picking out spells for caster classes, which you can easily manage using D&D 5 Spellbook cards.
Don't get me wrong; you're still going to have to read up on mechanics for actually playing, details on more complex character traits, etc. However, I found using these apps helped me and my friends quite a bit with the more arguably tedious/initially confusing parts of building characters when we first started out.
Not a must have, but I use this to roll up quick characters.
Right now I'm using this Android application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wgkammerer.testgui.basiccharactersheet.app&hl=en
Also, here is a Google Drive powered option which is decent: https://plus.google.com/+Charactersheetdnd5AppspotRT/posts
You could try Fantasy Grounds or Fifth Edition Character Sheet
There is a decent Android app now 5th Edition Character Sheet
That's actually pretty decent. I really recommend it.
You usually don't DM as a beginning thing. It's something you have to sort of grow comfortable with as a player, and see if controlling the scenario is a thing you're actually interested in. Having at least one person who has played before makes the whole process a lot less 'tedious' since they will be able to clarify a bunch of odd or obscure concepts that might stymie new players.
As for apps. This is a fairly decent character sheet system that does some of the calculations for you; there's a similar things on roll20, but this works on tablets and phones. I love the fuck out of this spell compendium app for 5th ed, since it's soo goddamn easy to look up class-specific spell lists, and organize them for quick reference instead of trying to flip through pages and pages of descriptions. If you're thinking about playing 3.5e, this is vital and may be the only resource you'll ever need. I think it even has Pathfinder stuff in it.
:edit: forgot a link, lol
There's the Fifth Edition Character Sheet App that I use when I have my phone or tablet. I don't know about iPhone, but I like this app. Costs a tiny bit to unlock the ability to level up your character's though.
Hope it helps!
I use two apps, this is my character sheet and this is my spellbook.
