I'm trying to get to N4 level in JLPT. Here are two apps I use on my Samsung phone i.e. 'Beginner Japanese' and 'JLPT Locker' apps.
Both apps are free and most importantly, works offline.
The former, Beginner Japanese, is a word a day concept, except, they allow you to learn up to 12 a day or more depending on your answers (yes, they quiz you periodically on the words you 'learned').
JLPT Locker is a bit for more advance, as they assume you know all the words in the level (e.g. N5, N4 etc) and test you on all of it in the level.
Btw, if you don't already know, JLPT stands for Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and its the default goto language exam recognized by the Japanese government. Both apps incorporate the common words used in the JLPT exams.

There are plenty of resources to help you along if you want to go the 'a word a day' approach. One of the apps, i found pretty useful is Beginner Japanese. Unfortunately, it only focuses on the vocabulary side of things, but in terms of learning new words, its very effective.

I have two apps I could recommend, although neither app has any audio. But just my two cents if you have an android device and want to practice Japanese in your spare time.
Beginner Japanese app is you are a complete beginner in the language https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shex.beginnerjapanese&hl=en
JLPT Locker if you want to learn and practice all the 8,400 words in the JLPT syllables from N5 to N1. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shex.jlptlocker&hl=en
To start from scratch, try out apps like Beginner Japanese (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shex.beginnerjapanese&hl=en). Its a free android app that lets you learn 12 words a day (or more) and keeps tracks of all the words you have learnt. Best part is, it works offline and doesn't need any registration on your part.
If you are a complete beginner in Japanese, you might want to try out 'Beginner Japanese'. Its a word a day concept, except with this app, you get more than just 1 word a day if you work at it (i.e. depending on your 'sponginess'. It may be a bit slow but it works for me at least (been using it for more than 2 weeks now).

I found out later there is another app from the same maker, 'JLPT Locker', which is for more advanced Japanese, which was more suitable for me, now that I look back. Its also flash cards but its more quiz based, it assumes you know some of the basic words already and test you on those and adds more to your vocabulary bank as you use it.
They are both available at Google play store or as part of a chrome extension
JLPT Locker https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shex.jlptlocker&hl=en

Rote memorization with regards to vocabulary, as with any new language, is, unavoidable. Unless you are learning a language with similarities to one you already know (e.g. kanji vs chinese, swedish vs norwegian, afrikaans vs dutch etc).
But you are still young and from your writing, it seems you are interested so there's plenty of time if the interest sustains itself.
I'd recommend you try out Beginner Japanese app or StartFromZero_Japanese apps to build up your vocabulary.
