Word Hero has ads but they're not obtrusive. The game has a ranked progression system and both you and your GF would play the same competitive board at the same time.

Word Hero is my favourite Boggle-style game. Completely free with an in-app purchase to remove ads, competitive tier system and a variety of board types.

Word Hero. It's an old game and a clone of Microsoft's Wordament. It's just a simple word search game and probably pales in comparison to modern word games, but I still play it religiously after all these years. It's been installed on more than three of my android devices.
