Would it be possible for them to make the API key configurable like Twidere does it? Just pick one from the official ones and you are good to go.
I personally use Twidere (which doesn't have ads), so I'm not too familiar with the official Twitter app. However, I'd be glad to look into it :-)
(I do have midterms this week though, so please don't expect anything soon!)
I've tried so damn many Twitter apps, none are great IMO, the one I stuck with is Twidere: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mariotaku.twidere
I used talon for a while but it never felt right, twudere comes closes to what I want.
Everyone is raving about Flamingo, but no one is talking about Twidere.
Twidere is hands down amazing. It is highly customizable, and can do pretty much whatever you want. It has tweet marker support, and more importantly, lets you use your own API tokens. This is a critical feature, because it allows you to get around Twitter's ridiculous rate limits if you use an official token. It's available on the Play Store, and it's completely open source.
I highly recommend checking it out, you won't regret it.
Shout out to Twidere. By far the best free Twitter client I've found for Android. Lightweight, very customizable, Material design, FOSS, etc. It even easily lets you find/use the official Twitter client's API keys, which avoids the rate limiting issues that affect other clients.
On Android I use Twidere. Not sure if the apps you mentioned block more things but for just getting rid of promoted stuff and showing just the people you follow it works great and you can use it with multiple accounts.
I’ve never had issues with Slack, so can’t really help you there.
The official Twitter app on the other hand was slow and a huge battery hog when I used it on past phones. I’ve been using Twidere for a long time now, and it’s one of my favourite Android apps. It’s open-source (you can get it on F-Droid or Google Play), fast, has tons of features and customizability, and has an awesome interface, while still keeping the look & feel of the official Twitter app. To me it feels like one of the most well-made apps I’ve used.
I use Twidere for Twitter" - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mariotaku.twidere
You can turn off images in that.
I developed the Twitter website https://dabr.eu - that also has a low bandwidth mode. Go to the settings page and turn off everything you don't use.
Higly recommend Twidere, cuts out all the 'recommended' and not chronological crap that the regular twitter app pushes.
Alternatively you can set how many tweets to load, and counts how many tweets there are left till the most recent tweet.

Twidere. Free, custom tabs and profiles like tweetdeck and more... support with a donation if you can !
I've tried several but am feeling Twidere right now.

I have been using Twidere for a long time, simple, clean and customisable.
Eh. Here's the link instead https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mariotaku.twidere&hl=en
Twitter: Twidere It's clean, material and has quite a lot of customizations available.
Launcher: Nova Launcher Prime Very customizable and stable launcher
Customizations: KLWP, Popup Widget KLWP will need some time learning to really use it to its full potential, Popup is a great way to have widgets without cluttering the homescreen too much
SMS: Textra or ChompSMS, I've heard good things about QKSMS but I have not personally tried it yet
Reddit: Sync for Reddit is my favorite so far. Some People swear by Relay, which is good too.
Month Calendar widget, Simple Calendar widget are my go to calendar widgets.
Thought I'd add some of the icon packs that I've used or are currently using.
Moonshine is a nice, free material styled icon pack.
Rondo, Voxel and Rufus are all from the same developer. I particularly like the icon style and shadows done by the Dev. I'm currently using Rondo for my app draw icons.
Min is a nice minimal icon pack. I'm currently using min for my home screen buttons and music control buttons with KLWP. If black is more of your style, check out Min's sibling, Minoir.
Third party music players and album apps adds nothing for me as I use an Xperia device and their media apps are gorgeous and very functional, so I don't see what those apps can do to add to my experience.
Power Toggles is a pretty helpful widget that you can place on your home screen or notification shade with many, many different toggles.
For keyboards, I use Google Keyboard. I tried Swiftkey but the predictions just suck balls for my use case and it just doesn't allow me to type as fast as I'd like. Some do find that Swiftkey has better prediction but YMMV.
Or you can use a free, as in freedom, app Twidere.

Rhythmbox is a nice music player, too. Many Linux distributions come with some kind of different music and video software and most of them work very well.
Evince is a alternative PDF reader
TextSecure is a good alternative to Telegram and Whatsapp. Redphone, also made by OpenWhisperSystems, is also great. The iOS version is called Signal.
For cloud hosting, check out OwnCloud.
Twitter client: Twidere
Syncthing is a alternative to BitTorrent Sync.
Alternative Mobile OSs: Firefox OS, Ubuntu, Cyanogenmod, Replicant
Blender: 3D modelling and stuff like that.
BitTorrent: Deluge and Transmission
Audio Recording & editing: Audacity
Home media: Kodi (XBMC), works great on a Raspberry Pi! There are also OSS remote controls (just check F-Droid).
For web servers: Wordpress (obvious one. ;) )
Instead of TeamSpeak: Mumble
Skype alternative: SIP
About F-droid: The amazing thing is that there are alternatives for almost every simple app. Example: Many flashlight apps from the Play Store have been stealing data from the phones they there installed on. There are also flashlight apps on f-droid and you can be pretty sure that this won't happen to you with them. Just in case you want to add that. ;)
Sorry for the messy post. I hope some of the stuff is useful for you. :)
Play Store: Twidere
Both Mastodon and Tusky should work, but how about Twidere?
Twidere lets you disable profile pics https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mariotaku.twidere
You can try something like this.
I really like Twidere
Can’t you just use a different Twitter app, like Twidere?
Twidere is what i use, simple and open source. Available on Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mariotaku.twidere
Twidere can do that
I've been using Twidere for the longest time, zero issues for me

No PC eu uso:
https://tweetdeck.twitter.com/
Aqui eu separei em 3 colunas e para elas preencherem a tela eu dei uma editada no CSS e joguei no Stylus:
.column { width: 33% !important; }
> > Applies to URLs on the domain tweetdeck.twitter.com
Maybe it's because I'm not a heavy user, but twidere works just fine for me.

I don't know, but we already have good foss Twitter apps, like Twidere. I guess we don't really need a mod.
