More correctly, it's Puzzle & Dragons
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
And yes, it's a great game. I burned out on it eventually, but it took more than a year, which is far better than 99% of games I play on any other system.
According to in-game records, I've been playing it for over 5 years. I don't play it as often as I did before, but I still log in almost every day to play a couple rounds. I'm fairly sure it was the first game of its kind on release, and everyone else just copied the matching mechanic.
Power creep is ridiculous compared to what we had when the game first started, but almost all content can be beaten by a F2P team/player.

Bad bot.
The correct link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
It's an old gacha game with generous rate. It's so old that it never hold any IAP discount bundles like newer gacha games nowadays. Content is challenging once you reach end game territory and actually need player skills on top of good cards to clear.
LinkMe: Puzzle and Dragons
One of the better F2P games I've tried. You have to use the in game currency to get most of the better monsters, but they're pretty generous with it in game (you get one stone for clearing a dungeon the first time, and they usually give 1 stone per day during events, which happen every week or two).
If you want to get involved with a Gacha game, Puzzle and Dragons is great. Super technical and surprisingly deep action match-3 gameplay, and they're really generous with free premium currency these days.
Here you go.
Also, PAD has a sub reddit. The community's overall pretty nice and friendly and willing to go out of their way to help new players get a nice starting experience(and help out fellow old players, of course). Sub's a bit slow right now though.
You could ask your first question over at /r/AndroidGaming in their weekly suggestions thread.
Personally, I play the hell out of Puzzle and Dragons. With the right starting rolls, it does not have to be P2W at all. You get a lot of free stones from beating dungeons (as you do in Dokkan Battle), and there are plenty of farmable units that can compliment a good first few rolls. And with the multiplayer aspect, you can even get carried through a lot of dungeons to help you get those drops. There is a "Player's Choice God Fest" coming up soon, that would be a perfect time to start.
It also has different collaborations with various other games and stuff. There was a DBZ collab a while back, a Batman one, and a bunch of other neat stuff.
It should definitely be on the Play Store, here's a link that should work.
Edit: Another thing I figure I'll add- It's advertised as a match-3, and that's generally true, but it offers a whole lot more freedom in terms of board control and movement. Instead of just swapping two orbs, you drag them around the screen, and it's entirely possible (and satisfying) to fully clear a board in one move.
You do have the app? wait, are we talking about the same app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
Install it via play store try playing it as is, from what you are saying I somehow doubt you have root
I IF you do have root, and the app FC (force close) do to detecting root, look up Xposed modules on youtube for a guide on how to install them, just look for a module called "hide root" should help you out
Also on a Nexus 6 with CM13 (root via CM & not Chainfire SU flashing) I can play without any isses even with root enabled
Linkme: Puzzle and Dragons
(Edit: LinkMe grabbed the wrong app, here's the correct one) (Almost*) Zero PVP, interesting puzzle mechanics with a constant rotation of special dungeons daily and weekly, as well as purchasable (with in-game gold) dungeons that rotate twice monthly and special event dungeons for holidays and seasons, as well as collabs.
As you go through the game your leveling outpaces the stamina system for the first dozen-to-twentyish levels (it's been a while, but that's about what I remember), and then above that you still have enough stamina to do multiple dungeons at a time - or one or two particularly challenging dungeons - before you have to wait on recharge.
*PVP comes in the form of recently added "Ranking Dungeon", where your score in a dungeon (if you can beat it) is put on a worldwide leaderboard and you get rewards based on your final standing.
I'd highly recommend it, it's the only game I still play every single day. And if you find you enjoy it, feel free to add me as a friend (ID is 335,167,318) and join us at /r/PuzzleAndDragons! If you ever get stuck or just want to figure stuff out better, the community there is happy to help.
if all else fails you can try QooApp to bypass region locks
PS nice username champ
Why is it in Japanese? You do realize there's an English version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
Is famous in japan, is top 1 I think or close, but in Europe not sure if it is possible to download it from app store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN). If not you can always download it from other webpages (apkpure for example).
In summary is a game to combine blocks of different colors, for me the downside was the quality of graphics.
I've never heard of battle cats, so I don't really know...
That's weird... it shows up right away for me when I search "Puzzle & Dragons." Does this link work? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en_US
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en_CA
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/puzzle-dragons-english/id563474464?mt=8
it's available for both and you can still play together. There's a pretty active subreddit too. One word of advice - make sure your first roll after the tutorial doesn't completely suck(you're skilled enough to active the leader skill)
Like every game, they will give you prizes for logging in for consecutive days. I reached 700 (yes, almost 2 years) while playing consistently. Unfortunately, the streak broke when I got a new phone and forgot to transfer my data. My girlfriend is at over 1000 days now and counting.
The term "gacha" is often applied to these types of games and there's a bunch of them. One that people seem to like a lot here is Puzzle and Dragons which has a sub r/puzzleanddragons, if you need some help. There is a sticky post at the top you where you can ask anything.
I played a little bit awhile ago. The combat was pretty short. I think there was even an auto battle option. When I played it was really important to get one of certain starting characters, but I believe that's been changed so it's not as big of a deal anymore.
Oh shit, I just found the Google Play link. (iOS too, if you're into it.)
Looks like...fun?
Puzzle and Dragons https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN
I don't remember how p2w it is but I had a lot of fun with it back in the day
Edit: OK apparently that's not the game I meant to link, I can't find the right one :(
Puzzle & Dragons is probably my favorite of the IAP funded games. It starts out deceptively simple, but very quickly ramps up especially as you develop a large pool of cards to build your teams out of.
Since LinkMe has trouble getting the link right, I'll just post it manually.
Puzzle and Dragons. A combination of puzzling, collecting monsters, team building, and dungeon crawling. Requires long term investment.
Edit: also has an awesome and helpful subReddit community
Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN (not the solver...)
In between games of Puzzle and Dragons, I'm trying to figure out Final Fantasy Grand Masters.
Ah, I went to the app's page on my browser, and there it was updated. Managed to install from there. :)
Finally it works in Android 5.1! Missed so many events by now... Oh well.
Funny thing is that it still says 7.3.0 now when I go to the app store page on my phone. The problem might be that I'm not using an US Google account, so the game was kinda "sneaked" onto my phone anyways.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Savory.SwapHeroes2&hl=en
Both of those use mostly the bottom of the screen
My dad likes Bejeweled, but feels it's too girly. So then stuff like 10,000,000, Puzzle Quest, Puzzle & Dragons came out to hit up that crowd of people who want to match pretty jewels, but needs some swords and magic to make them feel comfortable.
Also, you might be my dad. Dude forgets things names all the time. He still calls our internet "DSi" and our Nintendo 3DS "DSL"... So Zuma=Zumba really, really fits.
Add Puzzle and Dragons onto here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
Weird, idk. But here's a direct link to it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en

This I think after 2 seconds hard googling
Bot gave the wrong link.
Puzzle and Dragons has always been one of my favorite games. I have not played in a week so I am catching up with anything I missed.
Puzzle and Dragons is actually a mobile game made by Gung Ho that was adapted into a Nintendo 3DS game.
Android, Everyone 10+

They require android 4.0 or newer, also they have a separate version for europe which I don't have a link to since I'm in the US.
I'm not really sure how to categorize it. I think it would fall under RPG for starters. Here are a list of other phone games that I feel are either in the same vein as this, or that you just may like anyway:
That's not it.
Honestly sounds like puzzle and dragons to me
LinkMe: puzzle and dragons.

Here's a few of the games I have on my phone right now that support portrait mode.
Puzzle & Dragons - A gacha based puzzle game, where you build your team of monsters and try to overcome enemies with different abilities in dungeons. There's quite a lot of depth to the game but it can get super grindy if you are trying to keep up with the collaborations and events in game. Think bejeweled but where you can make multiple matches of 3 or more gems in one turn. Each of your monsters has one or more special abilities that can be used, and you have one "leader" with passive abilities and a friend's monster you can bring along that also provides a leader ability. I still come back to this but when I was first into it I couldn't put it down for the longest time until I burned out. It's nice that there is a coop mode as well.
lichess - Chess. Nice turn based game where you can select the speed of games and also have the option for correspondence play/asynchronous play. I also just enjoy trying to solve the puzzles built into the app as they really get you thinking. There's also plenty of stuff in game to help learn in the Study section and being able to analyze your games/openings.
Buriedbornes - Great turn based old-school RPG where you proceed through a dungeon generally with 100 or more floors. You choose your path between left and right and can face monsters, or get new equipment/skills and experience different events with curses or boons. Many character classes to choose from if you spend a decent amount of time playing and unlocking them. A large part of the game is deciding which equipment or skills to take when looting to replace what you currently have, with some pretty crazy abilities on both.
Tap Healer - Healing Touch - A great game that gives you the feeling of playing a healer in an MMO. You'll have npc allies that will tick damage on the enemy as you use your different abilities/talents to keep them alive. If you enjoy playing as a healer in RPGs this game is worth checking out, there's not really a story but as you progress you can actually see what it's like to play a healer in small dungeons or eventually large raids.
Hoplite - Hoplite is a turn-based strategy game focusing on tactical movement around small maps. Enjoyable if you like roguelikes that require tactical movement and almost puzzle-like combat. Upgrade your abilities or stats as you progress through each floor.
Mighty Heroes - It's nice to have a card game that can be played in portrait mode. I just grabbed this off the play store myself so I'm not sure how balanced or nuanced the play is yet but I've enjoyed the 2-3 hours I've put into it so far. If you play you'll get serious Hearthstone vibes, but the combat is a bit different as your monsters only attack straight ahead, and don't generally take damage when they attack.

Truly a remarkable game in my personal life I'd say.
If you have not heard of Puzzle and Dragons before you might like it.
I like to play Puzzle and Dragons a lot. The thing that stops me from playing it running out of stamina.
Puzzle and Dragons, not Empires and Puzzles.

Great going bot... you had ONE JOB!
A friend of mine is obscenely addicted to PAD.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN
It's not available everywhere.
My time in hallways is split fairly evenly between my Kindle, Redditing on my phone, and Puzzle and Dragons
My fault, Puzzle and Dragons, not Puzzles.
Here's what I've got so far.
Puzzle and Dragons Insanely popular puzzle game around the world. Cute girls are hard to come by.
Valkyrie Crusade is a card game filled with pretty girls and has a city builder system. Battle is turn based RPG with % skill chances. You choose which card attacks per turn and when to use skills. You can join an alliance for wars and benefits.
Dragon Ace is a coop poker game. You pick a card from your hand and set it on a team hand. The stronger the hand, the stronger you team attack becomes. Has stylized artwork featuring girls, guys, and monsters. Also has a PvP mode which is a team battle against another team.
Now for the Japanese apps. These are region restricted, but you can acquire the APK quite easily.
Million Chain: If you like spirit stones, then you'll love this. This is a high speed matching game with psuedo animated sprites. Has well illustrated artworks and has done some collaboration with Anime studios to bring about the likes of Madoka and Fate Stay Night. There's even an English wiki worked on by a few dedicated players to help you get started.
Million Saga. Plays like PAD, but shares similar sprite artworks to Million Chain. Relatively new.
Battle Girl High School 3D brawler featuring various girls with different personalities. Their cards feature nice artwork and costumes they can use. You can level in battle, and does not use an energy system, but rather a resource system which boosts things like EXP earned. Currently one of the top apps in Japan.
Puzzle and Dragons might fit what you want? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN&hl=en
Doesn't work on 5.1, but 5.0 is good.
Linkme bot is being silly. Here you go.
I played Puzzle and Dragons co-op ever since the feature is released https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gungho.padEN
It's a deep and fun match 3 game which involves skills and deck building. The game is quite generous with IAP currency so playing as F2P is no problem (been one for 3+ years and can handle hard contents as long as it's within my puzzle-matching skills).
Puzzle & Dragons, best game I've played so far. Collect them all / RPG with some puzzle elements.
Knights of pen and paper 2, recently it became free to play and it's awesome. JRPG gameplay like Dragon Quest. There are so many over powered builds that make it really fun to craft powerful builds. Also free.
I'm also looking for games like these, any recommendations?
Linkme: puzzle & dragons, Knights of Pen and Paper 2
Could someone test and let me know if Puzzle and Dragons works with this update?
As far as the gachapon system goes, a bunch of games run that as well. One of the more popular ones is Puzzle & Dragons (Itunes link) (Play Store link) (Subreddit). The game is basically bejeweled except more fun and with waifus.
Brave Frontier (Itunes link) (Play store link) (Subreddit) is one that has a battle system with rpg elements somewhat similar to Grand Order.
Both of these utilize gachapon rolling, along with a bunch of other games that I'm not too knowledgable about and have official english versions (I linked to them above).
