Airline boarding passes are starting to show up on Google Pay - I know Southwest added it recently in their app.
For other things, you can use WalletPasses. It will literally open Apple Passbook attachments from e-mail and websites, and add them to a clone of Apple Wallet (minus the credit cards). Even has location-based persistent notifications like Apple Wallet.
The functionality is there in Google Pay, but it's entirely up to third parties to implement it in their sites/apps.
Alternatively, if you have access to the PKPASS file (i.e., what Apple Wallet uses), you can try using apps like this.
This is what I did :
Hopefully Google adds native support soon.
Just install Passes (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android) app and open iOS passbook files with it. It'll show your boarding pass at the airport and you'll get the same experience you're used to.
Also make sure you don't have power saving enabled, it turns off background location and this prevents location based geofences from working.
It pretty much works like it does on iOS. So for movie tickets or flights I've just clicked on the passbook file that is usually attached to the email and it then goes straight into my passes app. It also supports downloading from copied URLs and scanning in manually.

I was wondering the same, not for paying but just to collect the ubiquitous and proprietary apple wallet passes/files, like cinema or qr codes. Just installed "wallet passes" and that just does this nicely

Odd, as mine shows that it is up to date and is version 4.0.70
You can use pkpass in Android using an app like WalletPasses

I have used it for some time, but don't use it often.
Pass2Pay allows you to integrate pkpass into Google Pay. One Samsung all but eliminated the rewards for using their Pay, I switched to Google Pay.
When I still had my S8 I would use WalletPasses in situations where there was an Apple Pay thing and it went pretty well.

That being said, I don't know if this is now already built into Android, or if there are some passes which strictly won't work in WalletPasses.

This app allows you to save and use the .pkpass files that iPhones use for Wallet
As far as passes go: you can use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android (it's the consortium that introduced passbook to Apple IIRC). Some services are implementing Google Pay as a ticketing option too, but it takes some time to get there due to organizational inertia.
This (WalletPasses) might be what you're looking for, although there are more apps that do this (PassAndroid, Passbook, Pass2U...)
Just use this app, works fine for me since almost every company provides PassBook files. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
Sounds good. Farewell Wallet passes app. You've served me well these past few years while Google were getting their act together.
Ah sorry I was even confused with the name myself. Here's the one I use.

Granted I've used it once and it did its job so I have no complain
You're the one who's incorrect. There are at least a dozen apps that support Apple Wallet/Passbook passes, like this one.
The website makes a .pkpass file
Android doesn't natively support it but I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android . I also have my car insurance stored in it.
This works quite well.

Been using it for a while.
WalletPasses works for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
You can try this for adding flights etc, works well for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
You can use this one to load up iOS .pkpass files since that is all a lot of places offer

you can open the pkpass files with "Wallet Passes": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android&hl=fr&gl=US
Hi! Download the WalletPasses app and go onto houjouvax.com to store your pass. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
I use WalletPasses. It hasn't been updated in a long time but it still works fine.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
Most people seem to misunderstand what you mean by wallet. I guess you're looking for something like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
WalletPasses works fine for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.walletpasses.android
There's also the WalletPasses app for Android.

Found it acts weird with sites that don't send you mobile links but you can open the link in chrome in the share it with the app.
Doesn't always update plane tickets but google now will notify you if you allow it access to your email.
