Shuttle (and others) don't delete your playlists. This is an issue with Android, and the Media Store.
When Android boots (and other times), the Android MediaScanner is run, which looks for files on your device and inserts them into the MediaStore database if required. On some devices/ROMs, there seems to be a bug where this process decides to completely discard all existing entries and replace them with new entries. When this happens, the song IDs that were stored in the playlist are now invalid, so the playlist appears empty.
It's useful for these players to rely on the MediaStore for Playlist management, as this makes playlists accessible to other apps. This is one of the reasons I haven't worked around this Android bug so far.
This is shitty, frustrating and annoying, so of course a music player shouldn't rely on the MediaStore for playlists. I'm planning on phasing this out in Shuttle, but it requires a lot of changes to a pretty central part of the app.
I feel your pain, but I want it to be clear that this is not a bug caused by apps, but by the Android platform instead. I'm not sure which devices or ROMs, and I haven't found or reported this via the Google issue tracker. I've never reproduced this issue myself unfortunately.
Anyway, to answer your question, you basically want any music player that doesn't rely on the MediaStore.
My recommendation is GoneMAD.
gonemad music player has a pretty nice folder browser. You can turn off the metadata reading so it will just show the filename.. or if its on it will show artist - song for each file.

Gonemad is what I use for audiobooks. Resumes even if you restart your device. It works very well as a music player because that's what it was designed to do. It's highly customizable and been using it for years.
You can, for example, make playlist that contains music files played more than 5 times with at least 3 star rating, excluding songs with 'Unknown' genre and finally sorted by longest duration.
There are many possibilities, install the trial and see for yourself!
GoneMAD Music Player. It has somuch functionality with a really nice design. The only things I'm missing are proper shadows but maybe this is a design choice.

my player GoneMAD Music Player has a "jump to album" feature. Long press anywhere in now playing or go to the toolbar in now playing -> customize -> buttons and you can add a button to jump to album, artist, genre, etc
There are many better apps than the stock LG music player. I use this one for example. It's so much better and you can also see how many songs you have
I know GoneMAD Music Player by /u/gonemad16 and Shuttle+ Music Player by /u/timusus both support Chromecast.
I just tested it and I think GoneMAD Music Player does this. Under the Albums column, I sorted by Artists Ascending. It sorted all the albums alphabetically by artist.
Also, I have my compilations set as Various Artists and they show under that rather than the artists included. I don't think The is filtered properly. I'll look through that too.

GoneMAD Music Player has smart playlists and one of them is a recently added playlist. Now technically the date added is the date added to GMMP's database so initiially everything will show up there (after install), but after that it will accomplish what you want

Why don't most music player apps, this one included, allow automatic advance to the next folder/playlist on queue completion? It baffles me. Do people really not mind having to go in and manually pick the next album/EP every time the current one has finished?
Also, GoneMad needs more recognition around here. The latest beta has majorly updated the UI in a good way.
Then ditch it as its rudimentary and uses the os eq so it will effect all sounds. I'd bought both Poweramp and GoneMAD once upon a time, and eventually stuck with GoneMAD for a variety of reasons before getting my V30.
I just tried switching between the DAC on/off, and between Poweramp Beta (b.703) and GoneMAD, and noticed the former doesn't seem to have full support for the quad DAC.
For the test, it was pretty unprofessional since I'm just going by ear, but I did ensure whatever consistency I could.
All in-player settings were disabled (most notably DVC off in Poweramp; and GoneMAD's custom audio engine turned off, since it has no DVC), and the DAC's own settings were set to the default (short filter, normal EQ preset). You can test the GMAD trial for two weeks yourself and see how it works out for you, as well.
First of all, the Poweramp beta doesn't abide by the full 75 step volume slider even with DVC disabled. It steps 5 each time; GoneMAD one by one.
Second, output. With the DAC disabled, they have nearly the exact same output; but when enabled, GoneMAD is much louder despite leaving the volume steps unchanged. The DAC-based difference is obvious in both apps, but GoneMAD is undeniably louder than Poweramp with the DAC enabled.
I'm not sure what they're doing differently in the technical department, but (at least for me) GoneMAD is coming out firmly on top in utilizing the quad DAC's potential.
use a music player with album artist tag support (and probably tag your music with the album artist tag) or one that handles compilations and you should never have that issue
I don't know if this will solve your problem but try another music player. This one for example is waaay better than the stock LG music player.

Unfortunately I'm not currently aware of a way to get mono audio across the entire device, but for music I use GoneMAD Music Player. While this is only a trial version, the unlocker is definitely worth it, as it supports all audio types, has built-in Chromecast support, and has quite a few effects features that are fun to play around with including mono audio and balancing. Hope this helps.
Have you tried Gone Mad Music Player? I don't know how to make the types of lists you're talking about, but I do know it supports smart lists.
It would also be helpful if you listed the apps that didn't meet your requirements that you have tried.
no its definitely true. I get into a groove coding while having a few drinks. The alcohol helps me concentrate and block out any distractions.. but after too many it of course gets sloppy.. hell i think at least half of my android app i wrote while under the influence
I use Gone Mad Music Player and the play counts seem to work for me, but to be fair I don't pay very close attention to them. I also don't use rating for my personal collection so I'm not sure about that, sorry :(
I searched for ages for an Android music player that would stop this. Finally found it in GoneMAD music player, which has given me absolutely spot-on gapless playback with no fuss on at least three different phones now. I'd highly recommend the paid version - since getting it, this is something I've just not worried about for years.
Many Android player apps suffer from gapless playback bugs, including Samsung's default app. This is not one of them.

It has build in tasker integration. its already broadcasting now playing info. and its audio settings are incredibly good. I bought the app especially for the sound. I get a beats by dre headset for free a couple of years back. so this app is one I highly recommend but I don't know if some of those features are only for paid version or not.

You can do that manually using GoneMAD Music Player by setting up a smart playlist and adding the specific artists, songs, genres, release year, etc of the music you want in the playlist.
GoneMad is amazing. It's customizable for every point (library views, now playing views, etc) among many other great features.
Years ago I went on a search and one of the many criteria was when you click "Genre" it should show albums, not just a list of all the songs in that genre. You don't realize how many music apps just show a list of songs. GoneMad shows you albums (or artists or songs if you prefer). It's very good and well worth the cost. They even have sales frequently. My app, GoneMAD Music Player supports the artistsort, albumartistsort, and albumsort tags. Under the sort menu there should be a modifier submenu that lets you choose whether or not to sort by artist or artistsort, album or albumsort, etc. Tag editor lets you modify the sort tags as well
It also supports multiple artists and genres. The multi artist feature is probably more what you want. If the artist field is semicolon delimited it will associate the song to each artist. ie: Artist1; Artist2; Artist3;

For ratings, it will import ratings store in meta of the mp3 on first scan, or you can rate via the app itself.

I use MusicBee on my PC and rate all my songs. Then I sync all my audio files to my phone's SD card. GMMP automatically scans the synced folder and updates my smart playlist accordingly so I can, for example, shuffle all songs with a rating of 4 stars or higher.

Likes:
- Fast and lightweight.
- Somewhat customizable.
- (Update: The player now loads the embedded lyrics, so I moved this from a Dislike to Like.) The player can't seem to load any of my song files' embedded lyrics.
Dislikes:
- Lack of adaptive colors (i.e., cover art's colors dictate the background and button colors).
- Cover art is not displayed next to song titles in playlist view.
Bottom line:
- I'm giving GoneMAD a rating of 3, rounded down from a 3.5. That said, it feels a bit unfair for it to have that rating because it does function well; I'd give it a 4 on function, with 1 taken away because lyrics aren't working. However, because there are so many music players on Android that function well, I have come to expect that they all work well; the rating I gave weighs heavily on the aesthetics and layout.
I should have said in the post that i no longer use PowerAMP and I now have GoneMAD installed. With this i managed to get the widget I wanted.

You can't but you're right not to use the default Samsung one, there are plenty of really good music players on the play store. GMMP is the best one imo, tons of customization options.
Opus seems to be a much more superior codec than mp3, with quality better than mp3 at any bitrate. It's a lossy codec, so there can be quality loss, but if you choose the bitrate high enough you will not be able to differentiate between flac and opus. I converted my library to opus at 128kbit/s and I can't tell the difference to flac (on my phone). If you go with 192 or 256 I'm sure you'd have a hard time differentiate even on good headphones.
I can play them on my Android phone without problem, but maybe you need a custom music player. I use GoneMAD Music Player.
Benefits are mainly are better quality at same bitrate or same quality with less bitrate, thus saving quite a bit of space. I was able to reduce my library to 1/4 its size and fit it on my phone.

as for using the volume buttons (i assume thats what you mean by hardware buttons), most custom roms will give you that ability. Stock android blocks devs from intercepting those button presses with the screen off for some reason so the options are a bit limited. I think there are a few apps that will listen for volume changes or something like that and fire off a next/prev track command. I havent used any of those personally tho

I've had few issues with GoneMad Music Player, aside from occasionally-missing album art. But that's more likely because half of my songs are missing album art. I have noticed that the player in KLWP will occasionally appear empty/offline, but as soon as I start up a song, it self-corrects.

With Custom ROM+kernel, I could get 2 days of wake lock before it would go flat when it wasn't playing up.
I like this player, you can turn off volume ducking, which I absolutely hate, and you can use Opus codec at ~96kbps and not worry about the quality being ass.
gone mad music player has a great black theme. not sure if it's amoled pixel off black, but it looks like it since you can manually pick colors. it's been my staple music player since day 1 and only gets better over time, super customizable, great theme engine, really friendly active dev on reddit too. /r/gonemadmusicplayer. i get noise from lots of music players but GMMP always gave me clean sound. good EQ, chromecast support, per song album art (only music app that does this).

Gone Mad Music Player (GMMP) is indeed great. I prefer a small directory player, but when I feel like using something more full-sized, I go for GMMP. You can disable a few features to really stretch out your battery life, and from what I remember, the developer personally drops by this subreddit to answer questions.
look into gone mad music player. it's themeable down to every last detail, as well as every other aspect of the player. can be overwhelming at first but you can really make it perfect for your usage. custom colors, layout, chromecast support, dual pane view, etc... it's the shit. The dev was fed up with subpar music players, so he built his own and is leagues ahead of the rest IMO.
i've tried others, but always got the best sound from GMMP. worth noting is he uses his own playback engine, while most everyone else uses the stock android audio engine. i kept getting noise from other android music players, but GMMP always managed to come through without robot farts when other players failed.
With some tweaking to the settings you can get a decent no album art setup in my music player
Album art can be disabled in now playing and in the album lists you can chose one of the simpler views that do not show album art. Notifications and widgets can have the art removed as well
GoneMad is one of the few that supports the Album Artist tag and will probably fix your split album concerns. If not, it has a built in tag editor so you can fix it right then and there.

There's a lot of great players out there, but the two I like to use are Gone Mad Music Player and Shuttle. GMMP has been my main one that I use for a while just because I like the interface a lot and how much I can customize it, although prior to it, I used Shuttle for 2 years with no complaints.

GMMP can adjust tempo and maintain pitch, which I guess is what you're after. It's also very customisable.

Potplayer on PC for lossless because it lets me control number of channels, sample rate, and bit depth in real time. It also has that Dolby Pro Logic II for downsampling multi-channel tracks.
GoneMad Music Player has a custom codec library so it has support for basically every format you can think of, I use it for ALAC. It also has a super customizable gestures and gui.
Honestly, Viper4Android is the most impotant thing in my setup, it's a real-time equalizer that supports correction filters, so you can get a flat frequency response out of basically any headphones. Viper4Windows isn't as feature rich as it's android counterpart but it's still amazing compared to nothing at all.
I have heard good things about EqualizerAPO but I don't have enough experience with it to say if it's more useful than the built-in Potplayer settings.

8 years later im still working on it. 2.x on Google Play. What is on google play is a bit outdated as I've been basically rewriting the majority of the app from scratch/ Post with screenshots of the 3.0 alpha
It is kind of cool browsing through the screenshots over the years to see how the app has evolved and I was definitely proud of what i was able to accomplish

The most played is not under the Playlist menu, but just under Playlists it says Smart.
You can customize the widget for GoneMAD to do this. Plus it's one of the best music apps out there.

I really like GoneMAD music player. It's got a free trial, but it's worth every penny. Also has reliable Last.fm support.

GoneMAD has a sleep timer.
GoneMAD has options for scan paths and ignore paths.
It has a lot to do with your Reddit app AND your Music app whether or not the music is paused. GoneMAD Music Player has never been paused on GIFV links, while Slide for Reddit doesn't seem to pause Google Play Music.

I wanted to have all of my music on my device rather than streaming for various reasons that I won't get into here. Also I was tired of having to plug my phone into my computer and manually copy the files over. So this is my solution.
I kind of liked Google Play, but there were a few small things about it that bugged me.
I eventually found GoneMad Music Player (GMMP) and fell in love. Give the trial a go to see if you like it, but in my opinion it is the best media player available for Android, and I've tried almost every one I could find. It has a HUGE amount of customization options, which means it takes a while to get set up exactly the way you want, but you can also tweak it so that it looks and behaves exactly the way you want.
Also iTunes was the same way. It was a fine experience, but with lots of small issues. It couldn't find most of my album artwork, it didn't really play nice with android, etc.
I've since switched to MusicBee on my computer, and I am frustrated it took me so long to make the switch. It's a better experience in almost every way. It's extremely customizable, the sync feature works great, and it finds almost all the album artwork and I finally have the option to embed the artwork into the file, so it shows up on my phone perfectly.
If you want to have your music on your phone rather than streaming music, this is what I would recommend. Both MusicBee and GMMP can take a little while to configure exactly the way you want, but that is definitely a sacrifice I'm willing to make to get exactly the music experience I want on my phone and computer. Also once you do the initial configuration it's extremely easy to use and works flawlessly in my experience. To transfer music to my phone I just plug it into my computer via USB and hit the sync button on MusicBee.
