When a company has to bring out a "Lite" version, you know there's a reason not to use the adshovel full version.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Also,
> I like Facebook messenger, but the app size has completely ballooned out of control. Way too many addons.
It lacks a few features that you may or may not like from the normal Messenger app. Chat Heads, customised "like" buttons, and colours, @mentioning users in group chats, fancy sticker/gif sending (though it does have a basic sticker set), and the automated scheduling events features. You also can't view gifs others send, although if you have one on your phone you can send it and it'll display fine for others.
I miss chat heads a little, although now that Android lets you reply directly from the notification pane that's much less of an issue than it once was. The customised likes and colours are neat, but not missed too much. The other features didn't matter to me at all (and I hate the automated reminder stuff). But your assessment of these features may differ from mine, so that might help you decide whether or not it's for you.
Just install Messenger Lite. It's an official app and has none of these annoying bells and whistles. Much less heavy on older phones as well. Just hoping they won't be adding ads there in the near future.
EDIT: Google Play might say it does not work on your phone, but it's only because Facebook wants to restrict the app to developing countries. It will work just fine from APKMirror.
You can deactivate your Facebook account but keep messenger active. I only activate my Facebook account during football season, then deactivate it as soon as my office pools are complete. I keep messenger installed and active, though, because I have a stubborn friend who refuses to use WhatsApp or Hangouts or anything else.
Edit: There is also a Facebook Messenger Lite that is much less clunky and bloated. It's just a bare bones messenger app.
Friendly neighborhood techie here: Facebook Messenger Lite.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite&hl=en
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/messenger-lite/
this gets the same basic chat features as messenger and has nowhere near as much phone bloat as the regular messenger app.
/flysaway
There's always Messenger Lite if you just need basic IM functionality. Works well and has calls.
Official Messenger Lite, may not be available in your country so get it from apkmirror.com (tip: if you use Pushbullet, you can follow channels from apkmirror.com and hence get notified about updates).
Try out Messenger Lite if you want something a bit less ridiculously massive! I switched on my Nexus 5, since the normal Messenger took 10s to load a chat, Lite takes ~0.5s.
Only available in some countries, so might need to download from elsewhere.
Try Messenger Lite
If can't get from Play Store, here's the APKMirror link for it.
Edit: Play Store link fixed.
As much as I appreciate you taking the time to do this, you can't tell anything from these screenshots.
For anyone else interested in what the app looks like, check the play store listing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
The switch is made server-side on everyone's account. Even if you downgrade the app to a working version, the new UI will be applied.
If you want something lighter, go with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Other than that, the only thing you can do is complain to Facebook through their feedback menu.
If you can't get rid of Facebook yet, try Messenger Lite for Android. It doesn't have video ads yet.
You should be migrating to Telegram or something similar soon though. Facebook will only get more aggressive with these ads.
I'm using the official one but it may not be available for you (I can't install it from the PlayStore).
Here is a link to get it on APKMirror.
I'm with most other people in here. Facebook is actual cancer.
If you're also like me and most people refused to use a different messenger service, if you deactivate/delete your Facebook, you can still use Messenger. Use Messenger Lite instead of the normal one. Uses far less battery and there's no stupid sticker or story shit anywhere.
Messenger was removed from the Facebook app because it was making the Facebook app too bloated.
Coincidentally, Messenger was also making the Messenger app too bloated, which is why you can download a different app for messages that is like Messenger, but only for sending and receiving messages.
Downloading apk files isn't piracy (I'm not going to provide a direct link to the apk, as that's against the sub's rules, even if the apk is completely legit) if the app is free and the apk is unmodified. You can trust apkmirror to never have any apks that aren't legitimate. If you don't trust them, then tough luck, stick to the big app, I guess, until lite is released in your country. I highly recommend just getting it from Apkmirror. Just Google Facebook Messenger lite, and open the result on Apkmirror.
This will be the legit google play link, it's not available in my country, probably not yours either.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Facebook released a Lite version of Messenger!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Are download links allowed? Here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/messenger-lite/messenger-lite-1-0-release/messenger-lite-1-0-android-apk-download/
Facebook/Instagram battery drain manifests as system battery drain due to it keeping the radios awake longer, same with Snapchat. Again I know I am going to bring the ire of the Facebook fanshills, but every person I've ever talked to that has asked me about battery drain, my advice of uninstalling all Facebook apps led to an increase in their battery life, for some it literally doubled their SOT.
If you need Facebook, you can use it via Chrome and it can even send you notifications via Chrome. I think Instagram has a mobile site too. If you have people that insist you contact them on Facebook Messenger, the lite version isn't too bad on battery.
Are you talking about this Messenger Lite or the messaging that comes with FB Lite? I'm using the former and I'm not getting multiple notifications for the same message.
> This item isn't available in your country.
Ah well...
Same happened with Messenger Lite
Here's the APKMirror link for Flash!

>Facebook Lite

But you're the king.
I feel your pain. I switched to Facebook Messenger Lite, and I have never looked back: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
The Lite version doesn't have pop up chat heads, but all of the other functionality appears to work just fine with no issues.
Until the app is updated if the workaround methods grow too tiresome you can use the lite edition of Messenger and it works due the way it handles media selection.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
I played with a few of the wrapper apps like Metal, but wasn't satisfied with the performance when using Facebook. Maybe they are better if your main interest is Messenger.
You may also want to give Messenger Lite a try. It's much lighter than the full Messenger app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
I'd like to remind everyone about the Messenger Lite app. It's an official app from Facebook. I believe it was made to make it easier to use in other countries where people don't have access to high-speed internet, essentially it's just the basics. You can message and you can call. That's it. I've had it installed since I got my new phone about mid December and the apps taking up 22mb of space total so it also doesn't take up a ton of space. Here's how the interface is laid out (although mine is black instead of white because I have a theme engine).
Here's a link for the play store version if you're lazy.
If you still need to get in contact with people, there's still Messenger Lite. Been using it for a long time now and it works well minus all the crap they've shoehorned into the full app. mbasic.facebook.com will also allow you to still check your messages from your browser too.
I don't know about your problem, but have you tried using Messenger Lite? It might lack some features depending on how you use the app, but maybe that app respects DND?
An alternative to the app or the messenging system as a whole?
If just an alternative to the bloated app, try Messenger Lite which is also by facebook. It's zippier and much less intrusive.
I would recommend going to Messenger Lite instead. Very clean UI, no bloat at all.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite&hl=en
Might not be available in your country, so you can install the APK from here.
No, that is a "fake" one. It is the link of the real lite messenger made by FB:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
It's unavailable in lots of countries. But you can download it from apknmirror:
Okay. He's using a BYOP iPhone 8, so maybe that's why his FB Messenger works correctly.
As a test, would you want to try an alternative app for FB Messenger? Maybe "Messenger Lite" or "Messenger for Messages, Video Chat for free" to see if either of those work? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=messenger.chat.social.messenger.lite
Go to the app info of any app that you don't mind not having 100% instant notifications, go to advanced settings, battery and enable battery restriction for said app. Do this with any apps that you suspect are draining a lot of battery. For example, Facebook. (you can enable it for the regular Facebook app but not for Facebook Messenger, for example)
Btw, try Facebook Messenger Lite if you use the facebook chat. Less demanding.
Just gave it a try in Messenger Lite and it doesn't work there yet.
Oh well, I'll just have to be content with the small footprint and uncluttered interface in blinding white for now.
If it's available in your country you might want to check out Messenger Lite.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Almost all of the worthwhile features but in a much lighter package with a much cleaner interface.
You can have both of them installed at the same time if you want to just give it a try for a bit.
You can try using the Messenger Lite app. It's much lighter and doesn't use a lot of battery. If you just text and send pictures without using all the features the main app uses, I think it's worth the install. Sorry if this does not help a lot. Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Give Messenger Lite a shot: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
I think it's missing some features, but I never noticed what they are because I just use it for basic messaging.
I have the same problem so I use messenger lite, which is significantly less bothersome. Better than using the bloated full app. Almost managed to leave entirely though.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
There is a "lite" version of messenger for Android and it wors very well. It doesnt have annoying pokes and stickers and stuff, just chatting.
fake edit: google play link
There is no technical reason to force an update. It's all about Instagram and "stories" upsell. Ugh. Messenger Lite folks.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite&hl=en_GB
I think many of us know, but for those that don't...
Facebook has a low weight app called "Messenger Lite". Simple and way less stuff. No SMS or hover BS.
Yeah you gotta check your apps.
Facebook is definitely a factor. I'd recommend uninstalling that. Just go to Facebook with your browser.
For Facebook Messenger just use Messenger Lite. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite&hl=en
The messenger client works the same as the mobile Facebook website. Because of this, none of the features you're looking for are currently available. There are stickers available and a like button, and you can attach photos; but it appears that that's it. While I'm not sure if this can be altered in the future to run more like the Messenger app, for now it only does basic things (like Messenger Lite).
As for the Pro version, the What's New section reads this: "Swipe Pro now only focuses on three major things: Facebook Ad blocking, Messenger Chathead Themes, and Widget themes." So if you're not looking for these features when purchasing, then you're simply showing support for u/jcbsera. :)
I don't use Hermit for this, but if I did and had these issues I'd consider using Messenger Lite. If not available in your country on Play then get it from APKMirror.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
> Essentially I just want the messenger part without the bulk of the rest of Facebook, like the news feeds, pages etc. Sorry if I'm not explaining properly.
Messenger Lite is just that.
May not be available in every country (intended for "developing countries"), but then get it from apkmirror.com.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Definitely check out Messenger Lite and (facebook lite?). And yea I fully agree, you can just always greenify those apps, or use the app battery saver option on Samsung phones.
Just saying, this probably won't give you a huge battery boost.
Just as an idea: You can use Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account. You only have to enter your phone number. In this case, there's no public profile etc. created (...which I'd assume is the main downside of an actual Facebook account.)
If the Messenger experience itself is too cluttered, there is Messenger Lite for Android. It has to be sideloaded though.
I can see why so many people doesn't know about this. It's because Facebook has decided to make it available to specific regions and countries. So going to this play store link will show that it isn't available in your country: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
But you can easily side load the apk from APKmirror: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/messenger-lite/
The Facebook App issue is something I've seen so much throughout most Android phone subreddits, it's pretty ridiculous that they're so badly optimized.
A PSA to anyone, just uninstall both App's and use Chrome for FB browsing. It honestly works just as well and has barely any drain. If you have to use Messenger, there's a Messenger Lite App which (should) drains less battery.
Take a look at "Messenger Lite" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite

This is to fetch Region Locked APK.
Messenger Lite still seems to be ad free (at least for me). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Use Messenger Lite

Though, ads may eventually infect it, too.
It's available for me in the US on a Pixel. You can find it here.

Messenger Lite might be the answer
Hoping they will not ruin this too
merci ! cc /u/le-minche /u/psyx99
or at least use Messenger Lite if you're not willing to cut the cord with facebook yet.

Hey there.
Danish guy here as well. I just bought my first Blackberry (a Passport) last Saturday and I absolutely love it!
Based on the apps you mention, it's certainly no problem. Just for your information I got Mobilbank and MobilePay working as well.
If you install the Google Play store. Go for Messenger Lite, rather than the regular Messenger app, which won't work out of the box. It requires patching which is a bit more technical, but instructions on how that works is on Cobalt's Github page.
Edit:
Snapchat won't work. I use Casper instead.
For Instagram I use Inst10.
Yes, Facebook Messenger Lite is available in the United States.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite&hl=en
You can see there that the developer is Facebook. Just in case there was anyone still doubting.

Take a look at "Messenger Lite" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Does Facebook Lite work instead?
You can also try Brave Browser with the Instagram Progressive Web App? Brave blocks all the ads, tracking, and other garbage making it fast. It saves data and lots of battery life. It might be an improvement over the junk apps anyway. Facebook has a Progressive Web App too if the Lite version doesn't work.
Messenger Lite also works too. Those are better than the mainstay options anyway. Less battery usage by miles.
I've switched to messenger lite a while ago and it is so much better. Also was less battery drain!
does messenger lite work? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
I use messenger lite (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite)
it's a no frills, just works facebook messenger.
At least use the Lite version of Facebook Messenger. Much less bloated and ressource hungry.

Thank you for this thread! Very instructive!
A lot have already been mentioned by others, I'm adding some more:
Webtube is a webview for YouTube. It allows you to login to your YouTube account while NewPipe can't.
MuPDF Viewer is the fastest pdf reader I know.
Etar Calendar is the app I use for calendar. Very lightweight.
AntennaPod is great app for podcasts. It allows you to subscribe to podcasts from different sources.
SlimSocial if, like me, you have to punctually use Facebook but want to keep it containerised.
Messenger Lite is an app published by Facebook, allowing you to use Messenger on lower devices. I use it because you just have minimum features.
Have you tried Messenger Lite?
> if i use FB messenger,
Tried FB Messenger Lite ? I use that and don't have a FB account, just need a phone #

If you must use Facebook Messenger, get the Messenger Lite app. Much less bloat and smaller memory footprint.
I'm in the same boat, and use Messenger Lite https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.mlite
Use Messenger Lite if you have to. If the problem persists, contact Facebook.
I'm not sure I understand. It is an app on the playstore...

For Messenger you may want to look into Messenger Lite.
Sure you can't scare them into at least using trusted cloud storage?
