I think this is a feature exclusive to Samsung phones. I don't see the option on my Nexus 6P running Android 7.1.1.
I use the Trusted Contacts app instead.
• Aggiungi i tuoi familiari come contatti fidati.
Google maps > Location Sharing > Add your family members so that they can see your location.
Also install Trusted Contacts & complete the set up.
If you are going to a place where you might not get internet connection, you can use,
Android Lost- Make a new Gmail account. (If you don't want to use your regular account) Add that Gmail account to your Android phone. Download this app. Complete the set up process using their website. And write down/take a screenshot of sms codes. So that even if you are not connected to internet, your family members will be able to sms specific command to your phone number & in reply your phone will send your location via sms. Try to perform this to see if it's working or not before leaving for trip. (You will have to give SMS & GPS permissions to make it work.)
Also this means that you will have to keep your location & Mobile data on all the time. Don't forget to carry decent power banks. You can also tell your family that you will call/send a message on specific time everyday. Also & install some useful apps. Happy journey☺
not exactly what you may be looking for but trusted contacts by Google could be useful. It would let her ping for help and let you find where she is.

If your dad is just worried about you, maybe you could suggest Google's "Trusted Contacts" app (available for Android and iPhone) as a compromise?
It allows you to designate certain people as a "trusted contact", and you can share your location with them in an emergency with the press of a button. Plus, they can use the app to request your location. You can deny the request, but if you don't respond to the request after a certain number of minutes (configureable in the app) your location gets automatically shared. So if there's some sort of disaster and you can't use your phone, your parents can still find out your location (or last known location if the phone is dead or damaged) without having to have "always-on" sharing enabled.
So they take it out of Google+ but split it across Google Maps, Contacts and Trusted Contacts.
I guess we'll go full circle and Hangouts will get it later.
Trusted Contacts (It's from Google)
Location sharing feature of Google Maps
Apps like Life 360
Edit: Links
You both need to download and set up Google’s Trusted Contacts app (see links below). That’s probably going to be your best bet for tracking each other’s locations.
Google Play Store: Trusted Contacts
Apple App Store: Trusted Contacts
I’ve heard good things about Life360, too, which is also available on both platforms. Good luck!
Share through Google Maps, or you can both use Trusted Contacts.
One can send the request, and if the other person accept the location request or ignore it for 5 minutes it will send the location.
You can add contacts you trust. Your contact can request your location and if you don't respond in a certain amount of time (you specify the amount of time in the settings: immediately or 5/15/30/60 minutes), your location (or last known location) is shared with the person requesting it. If you see the request, you can allow the request or deny it.
It also allows you to send an emergency alert with your location to specific contacts or your entire contact list or if you need to walk through an area that you feel unsafe you can share your location for someone to be able to keep an eye on you.
If they have an android phone, I recommend the Trusted Contacts app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.emergencyassist&hl=en_US
It is not what you might call an "active" GPS app--in that it does not always show GPS location all the time. The benefit is that it won't drain battery. The way it works is they install the app on their phone and add you (and anyone else) as trusted contacts. After it's set up, you can, within the app on your phone, press a button to query for them to share their location. After a certain amount of time passes--default is 5 minutes--the app automatically shares their location. Users can also share their location un-prompted, which is nice for 'checking in' with people who you'd like to know where you are, without having to write a text or call.
On the other hand, as I mentioned, it's not 'active' tracking; you don't get a location from them all the time, and it doesn't do anything fancy like "if they move outside of X radius, send me a message." Although I don't know any apps that do that off the top of my head.
May I ask why you are trying to hide root access from your kid?
If the reason you're installing Cerberus is to keep track of your kid, then that's fair but I don't condone spying on people (even kids, they have a right to privacy too). What I suggest is getting the Trusted Contacts app. It allows you to request your child's location and they can accept or deny the request, but if they don't do either in a set timeout then it will automatically accept the request.
Do you mean Google's Trusted Contacts app? Unfortunately the relatively recent user comments don't bode well.
I mean in that case, it can work with you. I recommend Google Voice so that you can have an actual number. Otherwise it'll come in as Unknown Caller. Plus that way (if you have Android devices) you can use something like Tasker to make sure than when his number calls it can notify everyone. Also look into Trusted Contacts as well.
If you need help understanding Tasker, let me know. But basically you could have it say if a call came in from the GVoice number it would send a text to a group of people to notify them there was a situation.
When you feel that you are in danger, maybe you can use this beta google map feature and maybe install some apps to notify your friends or family that you are in danger. Not to scare you but I wouldn't underestimate degenerates.
Edit: I have yet to try this out with someone else, but it seems like it would be helpful. I was about to say that it is only really useful if you need someones location. But I realized that the ability to ping someone, and get their location after an unresponsive period could also be useful, even if you already know where they are.
Check out Google Trusted Contacts. I set this up with my wife and a few close friends before a long road trip.
I think it might be what you're looking for.

You're an adult, and you're entitled to a little privacy. Your mom sounds like she's just worried about you (unless there's more to the story).
You might want to consider Google's "Trusted Contacts" app (available for Android and iPhone) as a compromise?
It allows you to designate certain people as a "trusted contact", and you can share your location with them in an emergency with the press of a button. So what about next year when she's 11? "Lol... she's 11.. slow ya sjw down there." When does it end?
I don't know your child of course. But 10 years old is definitely old enough to want a reasonable amount of privacy. And it's also definitely old enough to fight for it. I wouldn't be surprised that if you keep these kinds of things on her phone she'll find a way around them if it's possible.
Install Trusted Contacts for emergencies and be done with it.
Buona gita!
So I looked into this a while ago when one of my friends was getting stalked by a guy and the only app that I found that wasn't extremely bloated, or required some sort of premium membership was this one, made by Google.
Like most Google projects, this seems to be in the process of dying i.e it doesn't seem to get updates and people complain about it not working. But it worked well enough for us.
Also, pepper spray. But don't get the Indian brands.
The real question is why would you want to make such app when many similar already exist?
For temporary location sharing, every messaging app already has "live location sharing" feature, while for permanent sharing, iOS has got "Find My Friends", while Android has an official Google app "Trusted Contacts" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.emergencyassist&hl=en) with the same feature set.
As others have said, the Google app Trusted Contacts enables this. Users you add can request your position, and if you don't deny or accept the request within a set limit, they get to see the position.

Look at this app. You can set your girlfriend as a trusted contact, which means that she can request your location. You can accept, or reject. Also you can set it up so that if you don't accept/reject in 5 minutes, it will automatically accept.
I believe you can request it any time and recipient can chose to respond. If they don't respond then last known location is sent.

Full description for the app here:

This is what you're looking for. First party Google app.
Either that, or the location sharing thing from Google maps that other guy was talking about.
I don't know if this would help, but I started using Trusted Contacts but it only shares locations. From what I read on other comments Cerberus seems like a better option
Maps also had a trusted contact add on app could see that being useful for spouses with kids.
This is what trusted contacts is for, no?

Being a teenager, I know the pain of nosey parents. But there are of course some good usages for being able to track you. You said they bought this service, right? Well Google offers something similar for free. And it offers you the ability to deny their tracking (they have to request it) when you don't want them to. Tell them that they can get similar functionality for free, hopefully they'll deactivate the AT&T service, and they won't be able to track you all the time anymore. The Google thing is called Trusted Contacts and it can be found on the Play Store, App Store, and Web.
There is also /u/PCKid11's suggestion of talking to your parents. But that depends on whether your parents are strict, narcissistic pieces of shit or caring, good parents. For example if my dad decided he wanted to track me (he doesn't right now). He wouldn't care if I asked him not to. Kind of like the time he turned off my mobile data because "I care more about my friends than I care about him" when in reality it was just me wanting to spend my friend's birthday at her house instead of my dad's (they share the same birthday). Him throwing a hissy fit over that (and almost shutting the house's power) is really immature and narcissistic. So sometimes having a mature conversation with your parents isn't always an option.
This is EXACTLY what Trusted Contacts is for.
They have that too. Trusted Contacts https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.emergencyassist

This should be what you need.
You can try Trusted Contacts for something similar.
Is this in case of emergency? There's a Google app Trusted Contacts that lets you do that. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.emergencyassist
Google already provide an app for this.
Google Trusted Contacts does exactly this.
