I'm sure this isn't the ideal way but I achieved this by using Gamemaker Networking. I have a mobile app WordZig that users compete for highscores in a weekly challenge. And then I created a server (using gamemaker) on my desktop that the users connect to. This server must be running all the time. The server and the client send variables like tops scores back and forth. Like I said this probably isn't the best way to do this but it works. From the user interface, its unnoticeable.
