Well, it is popular but I still consider Snapseed (by Google) lesser-known. It is a fantastic photo editing app.
Also, everybody should have a bluelight filter app, such as this one. It really helps your eyes

Blue light from screens disturbs your sleep a lot more than other light sources, and this app (there are other similar ones too), supposedly reduces the blue light, and I've found for me it helps to reduce eye strain too.
They even sell blue light blocking glasses here: https://www.lowbluelights.com/products.asp but I'm not sure how good they are.

I use Bluelight Filter for Eye Care and it works well. You can set the time it starts and ends the filter at each day, so you don't have to do it manually. And this app has also a lot of options.

Easy to use, looks great, no persistent notification when it's turned off, no root needed. The pro version has an on/off toggle widget icon that works perfectly.
It's unfortunately a known issue. Moto G4 uses two LCD panels made by two different manufacturers: BOE and LGD. LGD's screens are the ones that often have this issue. There are two options to solve this problem: the permanent one is to return the phone and request a screen change, the simple one is to install a blue light filter app like this and set it to 6-8% (it's almost imperceptible but enough to eliminate the burn in). I use Bluelight Filter & it dims the screen lower then normal. Plus it would help save battery juice if you're at work & not connected to USB.

Apparently this is a common issue on this phone, likely due to a defect with the screen the manufacturer used. I've seen some positive responses to using a bluelight filter app like this one.

I'm drawing a blank on my own suggestions right now because of brainfog, but I'm just gonna take a moment to be the nagging maternal figure and say that you should really download a blue-light filter app if you haven't already! It stops the light from your electronics messing with your melatonin production late at night. This is the one I like best!

iOS: I'm not sure, never owned an Apple device... But per /u/mrheadpain, I believe you need to ~~root~~ jailbreak your iOS device.
I know what you mean about reasonable permissions. It's hard to know the intent of the app/designer/company.
If you are interested still in removing the blue tint, bluelight filter doesn't require location like twilight does. Although I believe that the location on twilight is just to figure out sunrise/sunset. blue light screen filter doesn't require as many permissions either, but it has in app purchases. I've never personally used either, so maybe someone else can give you other recommendations.

It has happened to my old S5 with amoled screen before. What I did back then is downloading the Blue light filter app (this one) and set it to transparent (to avoid the reddish kinda feel) and the flickering was not happening anymore when brightness was set to low. The native blue light filter won't do that though.
Try it and let us know.
Interestingly enough my old S5 doesn't flicker even withtout the app after a couple years. Not sure if it fixed it though.

And set it up to 7% or to 10% as Grey color (3rd color from the left). The temporary burn will not be noticeable anymore.
Bluelight filter for eye care has a function like that, for some inspiration �� I don't remember which method it uses though..
I was having trouble sleeping. I took melatonin for quite a while. I ended up stopping because I wasnt sure if I was sensitive to sun because of it. (I know, weird.) Since I thought I needed something, I started taking generic Benadryl. One night I forgot and I've stopped taking something altogether. I feel like that process helped me to produce my own melatonin at the right time.
As for screen time, I can't play games or anything that is super engaging. I can only read and it has to have a dark background. Reddit is fine. But the key is to stop when you start to get tired. Also, I use "Bluelight Filter for eye care" the android app rather than the one on the phone. It generally makes things darker (as well as filtering) which I find helps too.

Not sure if it helps but this is the one I was told to download. I was told choose the darkest one and set to 3% and it prevents the image retention. So far it's worked but can't confirm as I haven't been on my phone much today.

There's not a darkroom mode, but the dimness doesn't change with the time, it's just activating it and when you're done disabling the filter. This other app also dims the screen and has a red filter included, and as easy to use.
Bluelight filter. It needs to be manually enabled/disabled, but works pretty well and battery impact is almost none. Creates a filter on the screen to a color and opacity of your choice.

Helps protecting your eye - It is one of the most useful apps I have ever found for Android.
I just use Bluelight Filter. It's great for reading at night and stuff. Plus, they just released a plugin that lets you dim it to something like 95%. You don't need root or anything either.

I like Blue Light Filter. You can set the color of filter you want and opacity. I like red all the way up to 80%. It makes reading at night in low light so much easier on the eyes. This make falling asleep much easier also.

Good luck on your purchase! I'm yet another Nexus 7 owner who uses the Nexus for e-Books (primarily the Kindle app, and occasionally Google Books and others).
Suggestion: You mentioned reading a lot after lights-out. Both the tablet itself and the Kindle app offer various options for adjusting the color, brightness, etc. I recommend also grabbing a bluelight filter app to help filter out the blue/white light. This will help to prevent eyestrain and sleep disruption (or at least, it has been helpful to me). The one I use is Bluelight Filter for Eye Care, but there are others, such as Twilight.
I know this doesn't explicitly answer your question, but I hope at the least the glasses part helps you for all aspects.
Desktops/Laptops
For desktop/laptop Windows and iThings, there is a program I use called "F.lux" it basically "tints" the screen making it more eye-friendly.
At first you may notice the orange tint, but after a while you get used to it and don't notice it...However strangers who look at my phone certainly notice it immediately!
Mobile devices
For your iPhone - I don't know if there is a Blue Light Filter app (what F.Lux is/does)...Last I read, it wasn't possible for App Developers but I may stand corrected now.
On my work Samsung Android it has their own Blue Light filter app built in...I use that.
On my Xperia I use Blue Light Filter for Eye Care formerly know as "Blue Light Filter", and have used that for 4+ years.
Eyewear
It should be noted that my prescription glasses are only meant for using the computer/watching T.V ... They're not "actual" glasses per se...As in to correct any long/short sightedness (though they do have a minor correction in the prescription, barely noticeable).
Whilst they're meant for computers/tv's...Whenever I get a headache or feel a migraine coming on - Depending on the severity I either go for my glasses, or stick really dark non-prescription sunglasses on.
I'm in the U.K but I'm more than sure it's possible elsewhere in the world, but essentially I explained to my optician that I too suffer from migraines...
They put two coatings on my glasses, which I always ask for now (which I should be wearing as I type this!!):
- Anti Glare
- 80% blue/grey tint
- This isn't as strong as it sounds, but it is not legal in the U.K to drive with them at night...I have 70% tint glasses.
I use my glasses in conjunction with a Bluelight filter .... If possible, I'd have it installed on TV's as well.
I could use those external anti-glare filters but you can't beat the practicality of glasses...Everything you see is tinted...That stupidly bright white airport lounge with floodlights for lighting.

On both my laptop and desktop I use F.Lux. It's made it easier for me to use them. I have to be on one or the other since I'm in college.
Both of these apps have made my life a lot easier since I installed them. With the Bluelight Filter, I used my Google Opinion Rewards to purchase the premium license.

The is a similar app for Android, works good for me.
You can try either of them and see how it works. I've tested way too many blue light filter apps thanks to my V20 (image retention) and those two were the best that I've found. There was one more made by Chinese developers, but I can't remember the name of the app.
