Hopefully the no day-pass policy will minimize that! And sure, come to the meetup and we can all hang out afterwards! If there is decent reception might be a good idea to use an app like Map Marker to post locations of cool camps and chill spots :)
I use a free app called Map Marker. I have an area to the side where I keep all currently-unused Pokemon markers, and then when I take a gym I just pick up the marker, center on my location, and drop it. When it gets knocked out, I pick it back up and drag it over to the side organization area (which is just an area of the map nearby where I don't take gyms).
I like this approach because it doesn't require any typing (except for initially setting up the markers), and can be done easily on the go.
Yeah Scout Log was great, at some point the developer was going to open source the app but never heard about it again. You can still find the free version on apk pure. I moved to Map Marker , not the same but really good in it's own way.
The best way I found was to take screenshots when you have found one of the buildings and retrace your steps later when you are adding it to your map. Or you can download apps that use the google maps but will allow you to place down markers. Yeah, there will always be some sort of accuracy issue but you can see pretty far on the Ingame map so you should find its general location. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exlyo.mapmarker&hl=en_US

I use an app called Map Marker (Android), and I keep pins for each of the defenders I use. When they're not in gyms, I throw them off to the side of the area where gyms are near me, and then when I put them in a gym I just pick up the right pin and use the "snap to location" button. When reviving I move the pins back to the side.
I like this method the best of what I've tried because it's faster than renaming pokemon, and also gives me a sense of what gyms I could take nearby (by looking at places where I don't have a pin down).
Another good way to keep track of locations is Map Marker
Disclaimer: a coworker of mine develops this app; it's awesome though!
How:
Using Android phone with GPS, and Map Marker (free), loaded up Satellite layer, walked to site, and stood at the base of each tree till it updated location. Not extremely accurate and some of the pins are way off but the numbers of trees are almost all there (besides some of the small Bunya seedlings). Exported the pins to kml, loaded up Google Earth with the QLD Globe high resolution layer (QLD Globe layer is being taken off line for its own propriety website and so far it's terrible) and imported it.
Why:
Always had an idea to map all the trees around our area but don't get much time to do it. This is just one little section where I spend a bit of my time with the planting hobby. It used to have a headcut and a few erosion issues which I'm trying to fix and increase groundcover with more Bunya trees for a food source. Deer, cattle and marsupials (http://i.imgur.com/aIyOqrX.jpg) are making it very hard to establish anything. The Lomandra do fine though.
