hey u/_Than0s,
hope you're going to enjoy copenhagen - 10 days could be a long time in any big city you're completely right, however it really depends on which days you chose. Copenhagen can be packed with more events and summer stuff than you're able to consume. :) But to answer your questions
>would it be difficult getting tickets the day of out of the city and to the countryside?
No not at all - they can easily be bought @ either any railroad station, or via the official DOT (translates to "Danish Public Transport") app. They work for busses, metro, the s-trains and regional long distance trains.

>Second, what other cities in Denmark are worth taking the train out to from Copenhagen?
Well again, this depends on what you'r looking for. Going to the countryside, there are alot of options and alot of beutiful cities. I'd stay near the coastal cities, for that "summer vibe" only they have. There are sorta summer festivals in almost any danish city with a harbour during the summer period, so it's probably also a matter of which specific dates your going if you're into that sorta stuff.
>Third, how is the train system in Denmark? Are delays a common occurrence or do they generally come and go on-time
They are notoriously hated by the danish people for overpacking trains, that don't leave on time, and in some cases cancelled, but are though not at all often. Usually the trains are actually on time, and you're always welcome to buy a specific ticket to ensure a seat, but we're just annoyed at how expensive the tickets are in general, and need something to complain about, i guess.. :D
>I’ll be solo-backpacking across your country without a real itinerary. I figured I’d spend a handful of days in Copenhagen but then wing it from there. Bad idea?
Not at all, you should be totally fine, there are alot of options no matter how you should wish to travel.
Don't hessitate to HMU if you need something more concrete, when you're in town, and perhaps I can see what's going on.
And again, hope you enjoy you stay.
One last thing: Visit christiania, i guess that's any backpackers must here. :)
Oh, that's stupid... But this is your best bet for tickets, anyway. If you've got Internet on your phone while staying. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.unwire.projects.dmm
