Gravity Screen I don't think many people know about that. It uses phone's accelerometer and proximity sensor to wake up and sleep the phone. It's pretty easy to use and saves your phone's sleep/wake button.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I can never get enough of this app. No longer need to use your on/off button, like a feature you'd pay a lot for, for free.
Basically turns the screen on/off for you. It can use any combination of the proximity, motion, and orientation sensors to turn the screen on/off for you.
It doesn't jive with everyone's "workflow" with their own phone, but I'd hate not having it on my phone. Saves plenty of wear and tear on the power button, and my fingers/wrists.
It's not a feature so much as an app that works but I fuckin love Gravity Screen.
It basically lets you set all kinds of parameters to wake the screen by orientation, motion or proximity. It only uses a few percentage points of your battery per day and makes it so I never have to hit the power button.
Lots of people who see my phone wake up as soon as I pull it out of my pocket or flip it over have asked me how I do it. I tell them magic, but for you guys I'll make an exception.
Slight battery drain when I used it on my N6, but that's to be expected since its always "listening" or whatever you call it.
This happened to me recently and I ended up getting it replaced via warranty. In the meantime, I found I could get it to turn on and stay on by wiggling the power button across the long axis or tapping it hard quickly and repeatedly. Then I downloaded Gravity Screen to unlock the screen via the accelerometer so that I didn't have to use the button again once I got it wiggled appropriately. The hard part is fighting your muscle memory to hit the power button to lock the screen again.
I also went for a 5x from a moto x 13. I do miss the smaller form, but I got used to it. It's not crazy big like the Pure. I also seriously missed active display, but luckily found Gravity Screen and it's a comparable replacement. Not exactly the same, but it's a lot better than using google's ~~stupid~~ broken ambient display.
The camera is way better than the 13, and you can't beat Marshmallow's Doze, which basically almost uses no battery when it's sitting undisturbed. The fingerprint scanner is also speedy and effective. And being a Nexus device, you're guaranteed security updates every month, and you get the newest OS right when it's available.
The only minor issue I have with the 5x is that the adaptive brightness is kinda dumb. It doesn't seem to ever know how bright it should be, and often is too dark or too bright. So I just turn it off and leave it at the lowest brightness, which is already bright enough.
My suggestion would be to get a 5x, try it out, and if you don't like it, you can always send it back. Both phones use nano sim cards, so you can just pop it into the 5x with no problem. Google has a good return policy, and you can also get it from B&H with no shipping and no tax (as long as you're outside of New York)
I had considered both the moto g '15 and OPX, but OP's support is complete garbage and the moto G's camera isn't so great.
Install Gravity Screen and use that for screen on/off. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
Pretty sure you could also use a button configuration app to make the volume buttons turn the screen on, and custom roms/mods let you turn off the screen via tapping the top of the screen or swiping down etc.
Also there are many Screen Off apps that let you tap an app shortcut to turn off the screen. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
I guess a workaround that can achieve this would be to download the app Gravity Screen. It will wake up your phone anytime you pick it up off the table or if you take it out of your pocket, and then all you need to do is swipe the fingerprint scanner.
Give it a try — it should work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
This isn't offered by the device by default, but there's apps that can do this.
Try out Gravity Screen
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Here's some of its key features:
KEY FEATURES
• Pocket Sensor: Turns the screen off if your phone is in your pocket.
• Table Sensor: Detects your phone is lying on a table and turn it off if not in use.
• Turn Screen On by Motion: If the screen is off and it's facing up the device can be woken up by moving it.
• Keep Screen On by Motion: It keeps the screen on while you are watching the screen. It relies on the small movements of your hand while holding the device.
One of them sounds like the effect you want to achieve.
You could try Gravity Screen. It seems to work pretty well, but it seems like it breaks the fingerprint unlock process, so you'd have to enter the pin/passcode instead.
There are many ways to do that. If your phone is rooted, or has a custom kernel or ROM, you have many options. If your phone is completely stock, you still have solutions, but they're limited. Gravity Screen is pretty good for if you're completely stock, and there are more options like double tap to wake and volume button wake if you're rooted.
My power button started screwing up just after warranty. It'll "stick" and reboot my phone many many times. I've tried everything but the only work around is to use Gravity Screen.
Aside from that (and memory leak issues with Lollipop), I'm happy with the phone and don't see a need to replace it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
GravityScreen. I can't tell if it's an unknown app because it has over a million downloads but I never saw any other people using it. Anyways, here I go. I've been using the app on all my phones since over 4 years now. Worked on the S4, S6 Edge, S8+ and now on my Pixel 3 XL.
Basically, what it does is using your phones sensors to detect whether or not you are using your phone and turning the screen on and off.
Pickup your phone / Get out your phone > Screen on
Put your phone down > Screen off
Put your phone in your pocket > Screen off
And so on. Also, someone might think "but sometimes I lay down my phone and still use it, so it would be annoying to have the screen go off." Yes, would be, but of course the developers thought about that. You can actually wave your hand over your phone (proximity sensor) and it will stay on. You can also customize many settings, thresholds and toggle behaviors and sensors.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Not a replacement, but you could install Gravity Screen to turn the screen on/off just by picking up/setting down the phone.
Custom ROM developers have brought Ambient Display to the 10 and probably will for the 11 as well. No raise to wake that I know of, but you could see if Gravity Screen works: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
This app turn off/on based on the sensors. Gravity Screen
This app configure the navigation bar buttons.Button mapper
You can wake the phone up with the volume rockers if you turn this feature on, I think it's somewhere in additional settings -> buttons.
Or if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of battery life, there's Gravity Screen.
This is probably a bit late, but the only time I use my power button is when I have to turn on/off my phone. I use Gravity Screen to automatically wake up my device when I pull it from my pocket, then I use the Pro version's widgets to turn my screen off.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Haha, no worries.
I've been having issues with my nexus over the last few days so and in my looking around I'd seen reference to an app that unlocked using volume buttons.
There are also ones that use the gyroscopes and stuff for it called Gravity screen. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
hold the volume down button while plugging the usb cable then do "fastboot reboot"
gravity screen is also usually good to have and it doesn't drain too much battery like double tap to wake
Gravity Screen ON/OFF https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
I used to use this on previous phones and it worked great. Haven't tried it on my G4, but worth a shot.
Not exactly Ingress related, but I find these free apps help me when I'm playing.
Gravity Screen has a feature to detect motion and keep the screen on, and another to detect when it's in your pocket and lock the screen.
Another is Caffeine if you just want your screen on, no matter what.
install gravity screen. hits the battery pretty hard but makes the power button optional.
/r/nexus5 thread on the app with recommended settings
also i would recommend a custom kernel like elementalX with double tap to wake and sleep. i use this and gravity to prevent wear and tear on my N5 since the power button failure is a known issue.
Gravity screen is a great option if you're unrooted/on stock. Lots of settings, the defaults aren't too bad.
Edit: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
It can be pretty finicky but it's significantly easier than replacing the power button. It eliminates the need for the power button almost completely. If you want to restart the phone then that's when you would have to use the power button, unfortunately.
I use this app called Gravity Screen to prevent the phone from sleeping when the app detects the phone is actually in use.
I too was having this problem. I don't remember where I saw this app but downloaded it and haven't had any problems anymore with it unlocking in my pocket. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Tap/raise to wake - Not yet. Galaxy phones have a built-in feature called "Easy screen turn on" that allows you to wave your hand over your phone to wake it up.
Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity and Interaction > Easy screen turn on
But, if that doesn't do it for you, the app "Gravity screen" will get you closer to what you want at the cost of a tiny bit of battery life.
Yes, gestures are coming in Android Pie and that should hit around January or February 2019. Beta signups are coming soon in the Samsung+/Samsung Members app.
Not sure about the rest.
Hope that helps!
How's the rest of your Note experience going?
Not saying there's anything wrong with Active Edge screen control, but give Gravity Screen a try. You basically don't have to think about screen switching any more.
Maybe you can try an app on the play store ? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jarsilio.android.waveup
I don't believe adding double tap on support through an app is possible. Gravity Screen gives you a few options, though.
Alternatively, get a Pressy Button (or one of the super-cheap clones) and use their app or an automation app to assign the screen on action.
There are apps like Gravity Screen that will wake you phone based on its position, or if you wave your hand/face over the proximity sensor. After waking the phone, then you could have it scan your face. There will be significant battery drain though.
Yes, it is pretty stupid that good feature got removed without warning. I've managed to patch some of the missing features with Gravity Screen: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
Maybe take a look at this golden piece of software. Allows you to turn your phone on by just moving your hand in front of the proximity sensor. It might need a little bit of your phones battery but I am using it for years on my Nexus 5 now and I really can't complain about it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Gravity Screen can detect movement of your device to wake your device. You can set the sensitivity of the detection so as to avoid unwanted wakes.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Gravity Screen looks cool! Never heard of it before, but after watching the video it looks exactly what I never knew I needed. Thanks! Haha.
I have the same problem. I now use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en to unlock and lock my phone instead of the power button. If you never push in the power button, it won't go back into the bootloop.
I recently ran into the same problem with my n5. It is your power button that is being janky. From what I have been told there is no permanent solution to fix the button.
I have started using this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree) to control when my screen goes on and off. I have yet to use my power button since discovering it and am trying to extend my phone's life as long as possible.
Sorry for the shit formatting I'm on my tablet
Try using apps that turn the screen on using the proximity sensor.
I use gravity screen on. It also keeps the display on while it detects it in you hand and a bunch of other features including turning the screen on when you pull it out of your pocket and when you pick up the device.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Gravity Screen. It's not for everyone, but I've been using it for over a year and can't get away from it. I remember feeling like my phone was truly smart after getting it set up.
Honestly! This breaks the sweet "workflow" I have with Gravity Screen, which just doesn't work the way I want it to with a secure lock screen (mostly Android's fault anyway).
I used the old Google Wallet tap-to-pay all the time, but I've given up with the new Android Pay because of the required secure lock screen :(
Just give us the option to either pay from any screen (which would require secure lck screen), or just request a PIN from us whenever we tap-and-pay.
I have the same problem with my Nexus 5.
I installed Gravity Screen so I can unlock the device without using the power button.
To get around having to the use the power key, besides running a kernel with Semaphore's double tap to wake, you could try a really handy app called Gravity Screen.
If you have root access, it even works with Smart Lock now.
To answer your question, it'd be tough as the prox sensor is user space and double tap to wake is kernel space. You'd have to write a utility to monitor the sensor, give it root privileges, and have it set a sysfs entry that dt2w would monitor. This would stop deep sleep as well, so battery life would be reduced.
What you could try is the Mirage kernel: the dev has implemented a dt2w similar to the LG G2, where you can tap twice anywhere on the screen, but in a very precise small area. It works great for me with hardly any accidental wake. It also has the feature where you can temporarily switch off the dt2w by using the power key. You need a ROM or an app to switch the screen off; I use Cataclysm with swipe navbar to sleep, for example.
I've made an anykernel package with dt2w enabled by default if you would like an easy setup.
Edit: I just now noticed you're running KitKat. I don't know if LP kernel will work on KK. Try using Gravity Screen and see if that works for you.
Try using gravity screen and see what your phone does. If the screen responds differently, then your problem is a software issue. If not, it is a hardware issue.
Do you use a case? If so you might be able to remove the power button on the case, and install Gravityscreen. This will prevent you from having to use the power button every time you want to look at your phone.
I had the issue multiple times. even though I reported it to google during warranty (and it started working again) they wouldn't do anything about it after the warranty expired. I've got a power button in my amazon cart, ready to replace once I can scrounge up enough cash to know I can replace the phone if I screw it up. in the mean time Gravityscreen works pretty well.
I have the same issue, I took the power button out of my case so I wouldn't press it on accident. And I'm using Gravity Screen and Screen Off to use my phone without using the button. It lasted me for a couple of months now, holding on until the moto X 2015 is released.
I have the exact same problem. I bought my phone Nov '13. Which means it's out of warranty from both Google and LG. Only option is to send it in to LG and pay for a repair.
Or... get an app that wakes the phone using the senor.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
That is an interesting take on screen-off managment. I use Gravity Screen - On/Off and can't seem live without it. I hardly ever use the power button to turn the screen on or off anymore.
>But how often do you press power button? It has swipe to unlock, so its needed only for turning off screen and you could easily adjust to putting your device holding top of it? Or does it add additional hassle?
Use Gravity Screen. I never press my power button anymore. It turns off exactly when I want it to.
Ugh. This sounds like my worst (Nexus 5) nightmare.
I started using Gravity Lock (link) recently for just this reason and now barely ever use the power button.
Not sure it will work out, but you'll at least have to set your lock timeout for a bit so the phone will be "unlocked" and then try the third party wave motions to open the phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
This app is awesome been using it for years. No need to double tap just set your phone down or out it in your pocket and screen shots off automatically.
You can use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree It uses proximity sensor to wake/sleep device. Works really well too, but might have adverse effects on battery life.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree does a good job for me automatically switching the display off (and keeping it off) when I put my phone into the pocket.
Have you tried to change the display timeout in settings? It's probably set to 1 minute. Try some other value and see if display turns off. You may also try an app called Gravity Screen, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I've used these two in the past and they've done exactly what you're looking for:
There's quite a few alternatives on the Play Store and some phones (ie Motorolas) even have it stock. :)
I have an app that does that for me ("Gravity Screen On-Off"), which works quite well, but it doesn't seem to have helped in this situation for some reason.
Until you receive OneUI with a lift2wake feature, you can use this app from google play. Basically doing the same =] https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
You may want to try out Gravity Screen It brings raise to wake to all devices and has many options to configure sensitivity etc.
Which app? I'm currently using Gravity Screen and it works ok, but it seems to drain the battery a good bit. I'm guessing it prevents the phone from going into Doze, although the app supports pausing which helps with battery drain.
This is definitely nothing like a baked in solution but on my previous device (a Nexus 5 - gosh I loved that phone) I used an app called "Gravity Screen" exactly for that reason. Probably don't rely on my feeling exclusively, but I also don't remember that it drained my battery a lot - so maybe give it a try.
Gravity Screen: Link
I still miss it some days, it just felt so perfect in the hand. I ended up switching to a G from the same year, the LTE version with a microsd slot...was nearly identical to the X but with a slightly smaller and much worse screen, but the body itself was the same length and width. I had to give up a lot to get that microsd, the gorgeous AMOLED screen, the thinness, the gestures, but I did gain something with the Flip case I got for the G...it activated the phone whenever I flipped open the case, and since the case itself replaced the back, it made the G about the same thickness as the X when it was in a case. Now I'm addicted to that flip to open and either have to buy OEM cases (like I did for the Oukitel), or use Gravity Screen to simulate the feature (buggily). I doubt we'll ever see the like of the OG Moto X again.
I'm now using a Huawei P10 Lite, but I used to leave my Nexus 5 plugged in all night without any catastrophic consequences. I also knew about the power button issue beforehand so I used Gravity Screen to minimize the wear on it. Your phone has the symptoms of a stuck power button. I think the charger incident is just a coincidence.
Try the table smack trick first. The phone seems to be quite resilient. Next step would be to take it apart and clean the power button with compressed air.
This tip I just found on Google may be the savior of your phone: >If the power button is stuck, just remove the back cover, will be hard the first time. start from the charging port, the back cover clicks open but it is hard near the power button and volume buttons. just apply gentle pressure to pop the vibration device nice and easy without damaging the cover. Press on the black plate near the power button firm enough to release the power button and it will be ok for a while. this is just a quick fix, may hold for a day sometimes just hours, sometimes just minutes. But it works. Do this if u need time to get it fixed from a shop. I am still yet to have a fix from a shop.
Not sure how to deal with the actual problem haha, but you might want to look into Gravity Screen. It's a very lightweight app that automatically turns your screen off when placed in your pocket, among several other neat functions.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
It give you the ability to wake with a wave, or with motion. Look at the app description for "gravity screen on/off". I'm not sure about this differences between ambient and active display
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
This is a pain point for me with secure lock screen (fingerprint/pattern/pin...).
No app can turn the screen off properly without also locking the device. Your phone is locked in such a way that it REQUIRES the PIN/Pattern (won't allow fingerprint, and it'll disregard smart lock). It's a limitation that Android OS imposes.
Without a secure lock screen, I use Gravity Screen to control turning screen on/off for me. I also used Nova Launcher, which can turn the screen off with a Home button press (only when I was already on my homescreen). From anywhere or any app, I could press Home twice and my screen would turn off. Or I could put my phone in my pocket/on the table face down and it would turn off for me.
Conversely, I could take it out of my pocket, or pick it up and the screen came on. It's genius! It does drain a little extra battery, but good grief is it worth it for me.
Now with the Pixel (my first phone with finger print sensor), I'm trying to decide if I want a secure lock screen. It means my old ways of turning off screen (gravity screen or nova launcher), I HAVE to use my secure pattern to unlock afterwards, can't use fingerprint :( So I've disabled those ways of turned screen on/off and resorting to using power button again... I'll see how long I can put up with it.
Yeah, that sucks. Looks like I'll be stuck using Gravity Screen for a couple more years. I would even consider using double tap to wake instead, but looks like that isn't on the Pixel either.
Gravity Screen has served me well, and I don't mind the battery consumption, because the added value (not having to touch the power button) is worth it to me. Plus, if I'm in a bind, I can disable it at any time.
The Alt+Tab like functionality of Android Nougat.
Also, since It'll be a "new-to-me" feature: fingerprint reader on the back that'll wake and unlock as soon as I pick up device. It'll replace my current implementation of Gravity Screen, and save me battery that way.
If washing it fails and you can't use your warranty, I just read about an app called Gravity Screen that might help as a last resort.
I used to have the same problem, I got too annoyed and started using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I would give it a try, doesn't use the much battery will completely solve your issue.
Note: you can always turn off the "turn on by motion" feature to save more battery. It will pretty much make the phone be like it was on previous versions of stock.
Mine had the same problems a few months ago, I tried the "banging your phone on a table" and it worked, but now it's starting again. I'm using Gravity Screen, it's a great app.
It gives me more ways to turn off my device, it's easier on my wrists, quicker, and easier on my power button.
I use to use Gravity Screen, which made turning my display on and off mindless. I miss using it dearly, but it's battery usage was getting to be too much, so to ease the pain of not using that anymore, I use Tasker and Nova Gestures.
Try pluggng in the phone into a charger. It should turn on.
Then try to find an app that can replace it. Gravity Unlock may work.
Good luck.
I'm sorry I can't help you with this problem, but you can try this app if you haven't done so far. No need to tap the screen and press any buttons to put the phone to sleep or to wake it up. If you want your phone locked, set a lock method in settings https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=el
Has an alternative screen off for smart lock but it takes some seconds to close the screen. Basically it makes the screen full black and then it closes.
Check out Gravity Screen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
I use it on my S6 and it's pretty cool. I turned off a few settings, the motion-based one, and it's great.
Really? That is interesting.
How does it know about the hand waving? It uses the camera? So it needs to have the camera on all the time? You're talking about this app, right? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I was using this one. It takes a bit of time getting used to. But after that it starts becoming very convenient to not use power button at all.
I read somewhere that it drains a bit of battery though! I am not using my Nexus 5 anymore (power button stuck inside and phone wouldn't turn on) so can't tell how bad the battery drain is
> Alternatively, if anyone knows of any easy way to fix my current phone, I'm all ears.
It's not a fix par say, but a workaround...anyways.
Gravity Screen is an app that uses your phone's gyroscope and proximity sensor to determine if you're using the phone or not. It will automatically turn on and off your screen without ever needing to hit the power button.
Setting it up sucks a bit, but once you have it configured in a way that suits you it's pretty reliable (I used it in the past and it worked about 90% of the time). It does put a bit of extra drain on your battery, and premium features cost I think $2, but IMO it's worth it.
A couple years ago when I was doing app reviews I wrote one about Gravity Screen - in it I wrote the setup variables I used. If you want to check that out here's the link.
I'd be cool with a Lock Screen an Smart Lock, if it didn't mess with my sweet "workflow" with Gravity Screen. It just doesn't work well with secure lock screens and/or smart lock, not out of lack of trying though.
Here's a "stupid" question:
How can I use Tasker to enter a row in a spreadsheet? I have a spreadsheet to track my battery usage and estimate life, which I'm currently manually entering the data into. Could Tasker enter the data for me?
I know apps like Gsam already track stats like this automatically, but the advantage of having it in a spreadsheet is that I can track when I change a setting and how it affected my battery life (i.e. this day I had Gravity Screen completely turned off and the battery lasted longer than average). I'd also be able to compare battery stats whenever I update to a new version of Android, change ROMs, or get a new phone altogether.
I'd want to add a row, once a day, whenever I unplugged my phone in the morning, with the current date/time (this assumes I have 100% charge in the morning).
Then later that day whenever I plugged the phone in, I'd want to append to that same row with the current time/battery level/screen on time.
I call this a "stupid" question because I'm unsure if I'm reinventing the wheel, so to speak, with my spreadsheet. And, I've only done minimal research so far...
I use Gravity Screen, which has a Tasker plugin built in. I use it to pause/resume Gravity Screen when I'm at certain places or in certain apps.
I love Gravity Screen. It spares me the need of using power button and is working great. Highly recommended everyone to try it out.
Without root it's pretty much limited to either what the manufacturer offers (like LG knock on/knock code) or apps like what /u/icu_ posted or something like Gravity Screen, but they all use various sensors on the phone to let you turn on the screen in various ways. You won't be able to get double tap or swipe to wake functionality without root.
I have this same issue myself. I found the power buttons on eBay. Pack of 4 for $5. And I luckily have a friend who works at a cell phone repair shop so I'm going to give him a few homebrews in exchange for his services.
Edit: for now I've been using this app to wake up my phone and avoid using the power button. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Also, if you use Gravity Screen On/Off you have to place it upside down in order to properly work. You can also use the proximity sensor, but I find that the accelerometer sensor works better. Gravity it's a pretty neat app.
It can use the proximity sensor, gravity, or motion.
I don't use a flip case anymore, but I still use the proximity sensor (the "flip case" setting), and in the last 15hr it has used 0.1% of my battery and 1m 55s of CPU usage.
I agree, and "hit or miss" might even be generous.
If you haven't already, give Gravity Screen a try. I've been using it for a couple of days and it seems to work pretty well. Basically wakes the phone up as soon as you take it out of your pocket. There's a lot of customizable functionality, so it will probably take a little while to get things working exactly how you want.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Locks and unlocks your screen by sensing when you insert or remove from your pocket. Table mode uses the accelerometer to sense when you lay it down, but it's a battery hog.
I was talking about this one. It has been a little more then a year since I last used it. It seems to be getting updated regularly so it might be better now. The phone doesn't need to be rooted but you get extra features if you pay for it.
Kind of a different idea, but if you use Gravity Screen (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en), you can wave your hand over your proximity senor (along with many other features) to wake your phone up.
Gravity Screen - On/Off for Android
This app uses your phone's sensors to know when to turn your screen off/on. Putting it in your pocket? Laying down on the table? Taking it out of your pocket or picking it up off the table? Don't worry about hitting the power button, this app has you covered.
Be sure to adjust the settings to fit your use case. It uses nominal battery, and is totally worth it. Cons? I've found it doesn't play as nicely with secure lock screens (patterns and PINs) as I'd like, but I don't care because I don't use a secure lock screen.
try out gravity screen or screebl if you hate using your power button as much as i do.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree I used this on my Nexus 5. Maybe it will work on your Nexus 7 too.
Alternatively, get a small magnet and put it inside the, depending on how the case is made, you can use an exact-o-knife and slice the material a bit where the magnetic sensor on the nexus is, then you just slide the magnet in.
Depends which ROM you use. The latest CM12.1 I was using had it fixed, worked flawlessly, but I dropped it because I was experiencing a bug that switched keyboards all the time to the top in alphabetical list.
All others I've used (I flashed 3 yesterday to find one without the keyboard bug) the screen wake issue. I'm on Candy 5 now and it's great but has that bug.
Try this which turns your phone on and off with the accelerometer or proximity sensors.
Literally screen on when you take it out of your pocket and off when you put it in upside down
My power button recently decided to stop working, so I can get you an app to help with the locking and unlocking portion.
This app uses your phones proximity sensor and accelerometer to detect when your phone is in your pocket.
~~linkme: gravity screen~~
Edit: so, we don't have the play store linker bot? Oh well.

Whoops, meant to say gravity screen.
Maybe you can disable the home screen from turning on the phone somewhere in the phones settings but I'm not sure. I haven't had a problem with my phone turning on in my pocket.
I've used Gravity Screen for five years now. The screen turns off when I put my phone in the pocket, and on when I take it out. I prefer this over the fingerprint sensor. You definitely have to go through the settings, and I recommend at least turning off "Turn on by motion", since it will drain battery.
Also I recommend Cornie Icons with more than 5700 beautiful icons. Occasionally I try other packs, but I keep coming back to this.
I'm looking for a good alternative to FlightRadar24. I payed for the old pro app, but it's been abandoned and I can no longer download it from the Play Store. I won't support their new subscription model.
List made using List My Apps
I'm on a lowly device with no fingerprint sensor but have you tried gravity screen
something like gravity screen activates/approximates the wake and lift feature without root
I use Gravity Screen's proximity sensor setting to achieve this.
You can get GravityScreen which does wave2wake.
You mean Gravity Screen? He said he tried a similar app and it did not suit his needs.
That's what I was going crazy for a minute but it seems Windows 10 isn't happy with it anymore. <strong>Gravity Screen - On/Off</strong> - Free with IAP - Rating: 77/100 - Search for 'Scanbot' on the <strong>Play Store</strong>. ------. ^Source ^Code ^| ^Feedback/Bug ^report. dumb, not happening.
There's always the Gravity Screen app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
just discovered this app gravity screen on/off
link- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree When upside-down, in my pocket, I never have any problems with the screen registering touches.
On OmniRom you can activate the fingerprint scanner even with the screen off. Or you can check out Gravity Screen.
Gravity Screen, sort of.
I don't think the Pixel has the right sensors for it to work the same as the LG phones.
OK, found it. /u/MehediHassan_
One I have been using on my previous nexus 5 to circumvent the power button getting stuck was gravity screen
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
That can lock the screen based on position/sensors and is compatible with smart lock (fingerprint/pin/etc)
Same thing can be done with Gravity Screen
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
Here's an app that will help you turn on your screen again. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Gravity Screen does the same thing.
It's an app: Gravity Screen - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
Turn off Samsungs and use this app, your screen will turn on just by picking the phone up.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
you're talking about the this app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Have you tried gravity? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I've been using this app for years and it works pretty well!
App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
On my Nextbit Robin, it seems like my power button has stopped working yesterday, even though the fingerprint sensor on it still works (it did lose all fingerprints a few weeks ago, though, and did require re-initialisation afterwards), and the clicking part of the button works perfectly as well. I think it's a software issue, because it seems like the volume down button doesn't work, either, and I assume it has something to do with me trying to take screenshots or whatnot, and the software/kernel getting stuck somehow, because both buttons did work right before they stopped working all of the sudden without any clear cause.
I'm 99% certain that a reboot would fix it; however, how do you reboot a phone when the power button doesn't work?! I don't really feel like draining it in full, because in the 1% chance that it's not software related, I basically end up bricking my phone (whereas otherwise it could still last me a few days/weeks as long as I manage to always keep it charged or whatnot).
Tried installing a number of apps like Gravity Screen (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree) and Power Button to Volume Button (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teliapp.powervolume), but they basically just let you turn off/on the screen, without actually letting you do a reboot. Tried Material Power Menu (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naman14.powermenu), but it basically doesn't work at all, and somewhere in the description it says that it's not designed to work on phones that aren't rooted.
Is there any way to bring the shutdown/reboot menu that's activated from the power button? (My phone does have the reboot option in that menu, unlike my prior Google Nexus phones, which somehow missed the point that Android phones require frequent reboots in order to work properly.) This seems like a pretty basic menu that should be available in ways other than just the hardware power button! Any way to issue a reboot?
> Is there any way to enable a tap to wake and raise to wake?
If you use fingerprints, touching the sensor will pretty much instantly wake it up.
You may also want to check out Gravity Screen. It's an awesome app that will do that automatically if they phone is not locked (or is unlocked with Smart Unlock).
> Is there any way to enable the swipe gestures from iPhone X on here?
If you install a different launcher like Nova Launcher you can create as many gestures as you want.
> Oh! And any way to stop Samsung's keyboard from insisting on capitals for brand names and the letter I and such?
You may want to check out SwiftKey which is a fantastic replacement. The swipe recognition is top notch, and you can adjust a lot of aspects easily. For example, I like to always have the number row showing at top, plus show arrow keys on the bottom. There are dozens of themes as well. Sign into your Google account and it will learn your writing style as well. Give it 30 days or so and you should be golden.
Generally speaking, anything you could do on another phone is possible on Android. The Play store has so many offerings it can be overwhelming, but also incredibly powerful.
Hope this helps you enjoy your new phone!
Try Gravity Screen
I've used Gravity Screen in the past to do both of those.
My phone is rooted with Magisk and safety net passes. I'm using SuperMan ROM with the SuperStock kernel.
There is a built-in feature under Accessibility>Interaction that allows you to wave your hand over the sensors to wake the phone. This app will give you the what you are looking for (raise to wake) but I don't know how much it will affect your battery consumption.
As a power button alternative, the ROM I'm using has an option to double tap the notification bar to turn off the screen. It's a pretty common feature between custom ROMs btw.
And about cool features: Substratum lets you theme your apps (being probably all the themes in the store compatible) and the system UI (you will have to look for Samsung-compatible themes). YouTube in black just looks amazing!
I've usually preferred Gravity's functionality to stock.
Try this app. I've used it before.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Used this with the Nexus 5 back when I broke my power button.
I'm pretty sure that Gravity Screen will do what you want.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEuiRRWQHEU is one option or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
I use Gravity Screen for my Nexus.
Or you can use a software fix for it, just activate the option for flip cover and off the rest.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
This app has been recommended in the past but I've never used it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
I use Gravity for pocket detection, on/off functionality.
if it is still relevant: try this
(although didn't tried it for myself)
You're looking for Gravity screen. Not sure if this is considered 'fully waking' up the device though.
Gravity Screen has a tasker plugin, perhaps that will work
Gravity screen on off might be of use. My fire wakes up when moved.
I know this is kind of a workaround, but Gravity Screen might help with this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
Check out Gravity Screen for the power button annoyance.
Maybe something like this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
For those without a Samsung device this feature can be replicated using gravity screen on/off.
In case you missed the other comments mentioning it, Gravity Screen.
I'm no photographer, but I consider the pictures decent. HDR mode and lens blur (via the Google Camera) are capable of producing pictures I'm pleased with. The slow motion video feature in HTC's camera app is a "nice to have" feature also. Zooming in is when I notice the lack of quality though. I imagine the M9 camera has greatly improved on this.
Battery life is a lot better than the Nexus 4 I came from. It'll usually last a day, except when I'm bored and want to play a lot of clash of clans.
The phone feels like a million bucks to hold, and sounds like it too. It's great for consuming media: youtube, movies, games, music... A couple of other drawbacks:
1) Apart from Samsungs bloat apps and the font, which i think you can change, but don't quote me on that. Yes visually, it can come very close.
One of the many guides to stock-ish-ness
2) Unless there's hardware support, and even then i belive it drains battery faster, i would use the proximity sensor, you just tap the sensor or you can even wave at your phone(up close though) to wake it.
3) This one is beyond me sorry :(
As already mentioned, it's an app that turns your screen on or off (just like the power button) but it uses the phone's proximity sensor and accelerometer. You can fine tune the settings so that it works exactly how you want it.
For example, it automatically turns the screen off if the phone is in your pocket (proximity sensor detects darkness, accelerometer detects phone is upside down). When you pull your phone out, the screen will turn on as the proximity sensor detects light and the phone is right side up again. It'll also turn your screen on when you pick up your phone (accelerometer) and you can also manually turn the screen on by swiping the proximity sensor. I actually really like the way it works now and wish I used it sooner!

There's not much you can do about the power button however, you can lay off it with Gravity Screen.
This doesn't help your original question but could make working with your old phone easier: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
there's a ton of apps that use the proximity sensor or other things to turn the screen on or off without the button if you don't like that one.
edit: and since i just saw you're using elementalx i'm pretty sure you can enable tap to wake with it.
She'll probably want an unlocked screen, so you can use an app like this one
Dunno how well they work with Doze, so you might prefer one that's built in the phone
Yup, Gravity Screen on/off turns your phone on when you pick it up (off a table or out of your pocket), and turns it off when you put it away (again, either on a table or in your pocket). I've used it in the past and it works pretty well, although it will drian some battery.
Have you ever tried Gravity Screen? It has a bunch of little things that you can map your phone's gravity, acceleration, and other sensors to. One of which is unlocking the phone when it is raised up from a flat service (to prevent unlocking in your pocket.) It also has an option to unlock the phone by waving your hand over it (although Samsung has this option built into their phones if enabled.) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree
