Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The full fucking game, now available on Apple and Android for 10 bucks. Yes the graphics are a bit dated. But as a mobile game it actually works. No in-app purchases, no paywalls. Only thing is the swoop racing minigame is hard as fuck now.
Plus, it's great to give the 4th best story to come out of the Star Wars universe (after Episode V, Episode IV, and Episode VII) to kids who were too young to play it when it was released for desktop.
edit: as a side note, the fact that this game is on my phone makes me feel old. Because I remember being in high school and wondering if my pentium 4 would be able to handle the game.

Not a lot of folks mentioning Knights of the Old Republic in this thread. In my top 5 video game stories of all time, and it has the best plot twist I've ever seen in a game. Sure, it's older now, but look past the older graphics and you have a gem on your hands.
It's always cheap during steam sales, or heck, pay a little more and play it on your phone.

One of the most critically acclaimed PC / Xbox releases ever. A hugely engaging story with turn based combat that makes it a great port for mobile devices as you can easily pause the game and issue all the attacks you need to, just like Final Fantasy, and then continue with the combat.
There's multiple worlds to explore in the order that you feel is the best and the best part is that your choices in game affect the outcome of the story!
Try the mobile ports! I can only vouch for iPad, but the game was just as good (if not better) than I remember it on the PC.

It’s an old Xbox game, but there’s a very good reason they brought t out in Google Play for $9.99. It’s definitely an amazing game, and if you haven’t played it before, I highly recommend it!

Hardly a revelation here, though it'd be remiss of me not to mention <strong>KotOR</strong> in this context. It still holds up remarkably well on mobile, and I should be further through my latest playthrough than I am in the current circumstances. Just a shame that the sequel was in no state to be ported - only played through that for the first time a few months ago.

Yes sir. The truth is there are NO games like these freemium games (DC Unchained, Future Fight, MCOC) in the app store that are paid apps. It is because they are apps that simply have no end. That is we need to look outside the box for entertainment that won't drive you crazy with lack of updates.

Well worth the $10. It is doubly fitting for the category because it's a port of a console game anyway (well a port of the PC version of a game that was released on consoles).
I'm not sure if anyone remembers it, but there was one that came out in 2011ish called Infinity Blade that I really liked as well.
The first KOTOR was GREAT, loved that game, I recently played it through again as well about a year ago. There's an Android version now for $10 and it actually works surprisingly well on a touch-screen.
I really hated the second one. I don't even remember for sure why exactly, I just remember there were a lot of lame attempts to tie in some characters in the first story (HK-47 and Canderous) but those side-plots were just left completely unfinished and hanging. And, the final battle at the end was an ENORMOUS disappointment.
~~They did patch KOTOR, as well as add achievements (to both games)~~. Further, they also ported it to Android. It runs like a dream (in most places) on my Google Pixel.

Just kidding, lol, just wanted to point out a possible point of confusion. I'll suggest Knights of the Old Republic if you've never played it before on another platform. Also ScummVM if you've never played any of the classic lucasarts adventure games.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is on Android tablets. It was originally on the PC, and then on the original Xbox.
It is hands down, one of the greatest games I have ever played. Maybe the single best gaming story ever.

Shameless Plug: And for those of you that are barrack dwellers who are looking to pass a weekend, Kotor 1 and 2 are only $9.99 (or your galactic equivalent) on Steam, and should run on most modern laptops. Additionally there is an Android and iOS versions for the same price if you don't own a computer.

A bit more than $2.60, but KotOR, Balder's Gate I and II, and Icewind Dale all have gratuitous amounts of character customization, and have the potential for 40+ hours.
KotOR is perfectly playable on a smaller screen, but for Infinity Engine games you may want a tablet, or at the very least a stylus.
edit: now that I'm home, here a few more.
- The Bard's Tale - a quirky little ARPG, that fits your budget. I can't personally attest to the amount of character customization as I didn't play that much, but I'm pretty sure it's there.
- Tales of Illyria, and its sequel - nice RPGs with lots of Oregon Trail-esque elements.
- Avernum and Avadon - classic turn-based RPGs. Not the prettiest, but have really great gameplay.
- 9th Dawn - I never really played this one, but I've heard lots of good stuff about it
In short, you're going to need to shell out a bit more cash to get yourself a lasting, worthwhile RPG on Android.

You won't be disappointed.
GOG has it listed for up to Windows 10. Steam also has fixes to get it running on modern systems. For most people it's just a matter of running it in compatability mode, or making sure they have a specific version of DX9.
It's on the Xbox Marketplace for One/360. (It was an Xbox exclusive so I don't think it's ever appeared on the Playstation Store.)
You can also play it on Android tablets.
I don't know if any of these have been remastered, so you're going to be playing it with mid-2000s graphics. Personally I think it's worth it. This was an amazing game back in the day. It's still an amazing story, in an older Bioware RPG.
As a side-note, if you look into strategy guides or walkthroughs you might see reference to the "2/18" run. I wouldn't bother with that at first. You have to cheese too much in the early game to have an organic experience, you'll be too annoyed about that to pay attention to the story. It's not necessary, don't get wrapped up in playing it "perfectly". Just play it. It's a game about making your own choices, if you spend the entire time trying to follow someone else's choices you'll lose the best part of the game.

I've only played the first one on PC myself. They're $10 each on GOG though. I recommend playing it with flawless widescreen.

There are about 3 days left on the Humble Mobile Bundle (edit: link), which has a bunch of RPGs. Here's some info on those:
KOTOR is more on the action side and there are nine different characters you can have on your team.
The two Shadowrun games, Returns and Dragonfall are turn based combat and have a bunch of pre-built classes or you can make your own. There are also a number of different characters you can get on your team.
Wayward Souls is an action RPG hack-and-slash game. There are five or six classes you can play as by unlocking them. Has some rogue-lite gameplay: somewhat randomized dungeons, random upgrades and buffs you can find, and if you die - you start over but keep the gold you found to buy permanent ability improvements.
Doom & Destiny Advanced has turn based combat. Each of the four characters has multiple classes they can be switched between. Plays kind of like an old Final Fantasy SNES game, but with dumb jokes.
Adventure Bar Story has turn based combat, but a good portion of the game is buying/selling/crafting. There are around seven characters and you use a party of up to three at a time. Note that the version on the Play Store has IAP, but the Humble Bundle one is completely without IAP.

It is honestly hard to tell sometimes if a game offers this.
When you look at a game in the Play Store app, in between the one sentence description and the green "Read More," you may see a series of icons. If you see a grey cloud with a white up arrow inside of it, the game has cloud save through Google Play. Example, KOTOR has this. For whatever reason, if you view the Play Store website on your computer, I don't see these icons. Also annoyingly, the KOTOR game description doesn't mention cloud saves (unless I missed it).
After you upload a cloud save, you can download it on any other device that you've signed into with you Google account.
Other games offer cloud saves through their own servers. Crashlands has a feature where you can make a free account through them to get cloud saves. This actually syncs between the Android and PC versions of the game. Now, this Crashlands doesn't show the cloud save icon, probably because it's not through Google, but it is mentioned in the description.
Another one that offers cloud saves through Google is surprisingly Pixel Blacksmith, who's dev is active around here. This one has an icon and it is mentioned in the description. You do have to manually make the save.
All three of those above can be played offline, but you can't upload your cloud save until you have internet access, of course.
There are probably a number of games that require a constant internet connection and have your info saved on their servers. Sometimes you have to sign up and make an account with them.
I guess this turned into a mini rant. Sorry about that. I just wish games on Android had better automatic cloud saves.

1) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic | $9.99 - Landscape
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is just a classic RPG adventure game first released for PC and Xbox all the way back in 2003, before making its way to mobile in 2013 and 2014.
And the mobile port really delivers that full PC and console experience.
We can pick between three classes that define our core stats and enable unique play-styles, and then we head out on a journey full of rich narratives and lots of side-quests. These can all be dealt with in multiple ways, by the way, and the choices we make push us toward either the light or the dark side.
The combat system is especially interesting, because although it takes place in real-time, we can pause to issue orders, perform specific skills, or use items. It’s something you don’t see often these days, and it creates a neat experience.
The touch controls work decently well, the game features Bluetooth controller support, and although the graphics are of course dated, this is easily one of the best games ever ported to mobile - and it only costs $9.99.
2) GRID Autosport | $9.99 - Landscape
GRID Autosport is another great game ported to mobile in 2017 and 2019 after first releasing on PC and consoles in 2014.
It’s a high-quality singleplayer racing game that plays as something in-between an arcade racer and the more serious simulation racing games, which makes it perfect for both casual and hardcore players.
And best of all, it just has sooo many game modes, ranging from traditional circuit races to sprints, time attacks, drag races, and drifting.
It also features over 100 cars and tracks, and it does require a decently powerful phone to play properly, but if you’ve got that, the highly customizable touch controls and Bluetooth controller support ensure an awesome experience.
You don’t have to look far to see people calling this the best racing game to ever release on mobile, and I honestly think they’re right! Because this is a truly a masterpiece - and it also only costs $9.99 on mobile.
3) Max Payne | $2.99 - Landscape
Max Payne is a story-driven third-person action shooter in which we use a bunch of different weapons to shoot bad guys left ad right in slow-motion.
It first released in 2001 before being ported to mobile in 2012, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you enjoy these dark, dystopian action-adventures.
The touch controls are definitely this game’s weakest point, and it made me consider leaving it out of this list, but the rest of the game is just so well made, and there’s also bluetooth controller support, which is the best way to experience the game.
It also only costs $2.99, so it’s significantly cheaper than the previous two games, and it might honestly just be one of the best story-driven shooters available on mobile!
4) Brawlhalla | Free - Landscape
I consider Brawlhalla to be the best fast-paced brawler on mobile. And if you’ve been looking for a mobile alternative to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros - this is basically it.
It got ported to mobile in 2020, and it features over 50 distinct heroes with unique abilities and weapons that we can use in the real-time multiplayer that even supports cross-play across PC, console, and mobile. Not to mention both multiplayer and single-player game modes.

On one hand, I am very VERY wary. This is still under the ownership of Disney and their influence has been largely negative. Screen-grabs of the one of the writer's twitter posts has also been circulating and they look to be one of the last people I'd want touching the writing.
That said I'll do my best not to get prematurely salty as there are some positive signs to this as well. The last two big Sony remakes have been highly successful, FFVII and Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls especially has a special place in my heart as I played it in college before Dark Souls came out and they managed to not only meet but exceed my expectations; I say all of this because an article said they were bringing on some talent from that project so I view that as a good sign. This also looks like a remake of KOTOR 1 with the assumption that KOTOR 2 remake will happen if this is successful, so hopefully that puts pressure on them to be faithful and not piss off fans.
The game is also being developed by Aspyr who ported KOTOR 1 and 2 to mobile. Not only did they do a good job but this makes them arguably the best positioned company out there to do a faithful port(sadly old bioware is dead). Bringing back the original VA for Bastilla is also a good sign, and highlighting Sith Lord Revan rather than Malak or Bastilla shows they have a modicum of understanding of the titles and what people love. Porting a game is very different to remaking one however so we'll see if they have the chops.
I'm also hoping that this being a video game makes it separated enough from the Hollywood and comics industry that there won't be as much interference. While I can't say from personal experience, people have praised Battlefront 2's improvements in recent years and it seem Fallen Order also did fairly well. Circling back while I'm still 100% wary of that one particular writer she looks like she's contributing on multiple upcoming titles so I'm hoping that's a sign that she won't be a "real writer" as much as she'll be like a consultant to ensure there's nothing that might set off the woke twitter crowd. Full optimism here, but KOTOR is a story that isn't exactly incompatible with someone with that mindset. Taris in particular is extremely classist, racist, and has a few sexist characters but I swear if anyone on the writing team tries to beat us over the head with it or tie it to real world characters/events(the worst example I can think of is making the racist hate preacher resemble a particular former president) that would flush all the goodwill I have down the drain.
I also want to address the complaint of people who "want something new." KOTOR is 20 years old now and a huge amount of the fanbase have never played it; I'd say it's due for a remake. While I decry the drought we've had the past few years we've gotten some new titles lately and more on the horizon. KOTOR 2 especially was launched incomplete so we might actually get some genuinely new content there as well. Who knows, maybe if highly successful we might get a KOTOR 3 out of it, retconning the mess they made in SWTOR and the novelization.
If you read this far, I also want to mention that the original KOTOR is still available on Steam and IOS for $10 and Android for a mere $5. I've played all of them and the mobile ones run especially well. RPGs, KOTOR is pretty universally liked here. You can apparently get it free through an Amazon Underground app, if you want to mess with that.
TDs, I also liked Kingdom Rush and another one I enjoyed is Tiny Guardians. Premium game, no ads, no dumb stamina/energy hindering your game play time, IAPs were unnecessary to completely beat game. They were for cosmetic stuff, if I remember correctly.

XCOM, sci-fi themed, turn based combat.
Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, and Icewind Dale. Fantasy themed, D&D RPG based, you can pause combat to kind of make it turn based, if you want.
Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall. Mix of sci-fi and fantasy, Shadowrun RPG based. Isometric turn based combat.
Templar Battleforce. Sci-fi themed, kind of WarHammer 40k like. Top down, turn based combat. Not as much talking to NPCs type RPG elements as the other games, more of a turn based strategy.
KOTOR. It is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and the best on the Play Store.

Mobile version seems good to me.
Star Wars KOTOR, GTA: San Andreas and Crashlands. Thats literally 200 hours of entertainment right there (possibly infinte hours). KOTOR and GTA look demanding but can be scaled down quite nicely as both feature extensive graphics options. Crashlands will run on a toaster at this point.
It also covers most genre bases. You have free-roam, driving, shooting action in GTA. A console Bioware RPG with story and acting in KOTOR and a deep survival crafting game in Crashlands.
KOTOR is available for iPhone and Android, so you could play that on your smartphone (if you have one).
It depends on what you like. If you want to play Zelda, get a Nintendo 3DS and grab some of the Zelda games available:

Majora's Mask 3D
You can also download other Zelda games via the Nintendo Virtual Console market place.
A completely different option would be buying a PlayStation Vita. You might actually like Persona 4 Golden, which is only available on that console.

Rolled Force Adept. Are we assuming d20 system style abilities for that? My odds of survival are going to heavily depend on what level I can reach in 2 years.
Are we allowed to acquire equipment in the 2 years of "training"?
My presumption is that if I starting out as a Force Adept in the Old Republic era, I'm probably going to end up as Jedi.
I don't have a lot of relevant starting equipment IRL. The best thing to take would probably be my cell phone, and assume I have KOTOR for Android installed on it, just in case I end up at exactly that point in the timeline. For weapons, I'd probably bring a katana and utility knife, but hopefully I could upgrade to a lightsaber and/or blaster during the 2 years of training. If I don't get Jedi training, I'd probably take a blaster and a virboblade.
Challenge 1: I close the cell door and use Force Illusion to trick the ghouls into leaving the area (if possible) or fighting each other (if that's not plausible). Since they're feral, this probably would not be too challenging. If any of them manage to bust inside, I should be able to handle them one at a time with a blaster and/or a Force Imbued melee weapon.
Challenge 2: Much trickier. Assuming my force senses alert me to danger before I go into the room, I can probably use Force Illusion again here.
Challenge 3: I can probably Force Jump to the lever directly, potentially Force Pushing anything in my way.
Challenge 4: Depends on the arena. I'd probably want to immediately Force Jump to something too high for them to reach and use my blaster. If I don't have a blaster, Force Crush would probably work.
Challenge 5: I probably get completely stomped here. I'd probably open by getting as much distance as possible with Force Jump, speed, etc. Best odds after that are probably to use Force Friendship on Kratos and hope he'll tank for me while I make friends as many of the others as possible. Sincerely doubt I'd make it through this, but it depends a lot on how powerful of a Force user I am. If we're talking Level 20 Adept that has played through the events of KOTOR, I've got a shot.
Challenge 6: Force Friendship on Superman while Batman runs interference. If I can succeed at this, he can probably get the others to stop fighting until we can discuss a peaceful solution to the situation.
My odds of clearing it are proportionate to my level; at level 1, my odds are virtually nil. At level 20, I think I'd have a fighting chance, since mind-altering powers would probably work on virtually any of the targets.
Star wars: Knights Of The Old Republic is so much fun. I can't say enough about it, but if you like good story telling this game is for you.
