Hey - not sure what operating system you have but there's a great app I use on Android called Darker - allows you to go darker than the phone's lowest brightness (which I personally find can still be too bright sometimes). Great for cinemas actually, but also very good for pitch black at night. It can lower the capacitive button brightness too. Obviously no use to you if you're on an iPhone.

It's because you're using an app that "dims" the screen. What it's actually doing is putting an overlay over the screen. Android doesn't allow you to make any installs when the screen is overlaid because it could be for nefarious reasons. It's a security feature. Your screen dimming app probably informs you of this on the Google Play store or in the app.
My preferred screen dimming app is <strong>Darker</strong>. That app tells you in the app description.
>Note: When manually installing APK files, Android blocks the "Install" button from being pressed when Darker is running. This is NOT a bug. It's a protective measure to prevent malicious apps from camouflaging the install button. Pausing Darker will solve this.

You'll need to get the Pro version for the color filter. There should be free apps out there that provide a color filter.

Yep as an example, the Darker app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mlhg.screenfilter) has a list of intents you can use in Tasker to perform operations without opening the app.
The use case I'm going for here is when I connect to my Work WiFi I want to call an Intent I.e. redditsync.NSFW_OFF so the next time I go to reddit sync all my NSFW posts won't be visible.
I use one called Darker. It works wonders, you can tap the icon to turn it on and off, I only use it before bed and there is a noticeable difference, instant eyeball relaxation. Just a dark grey/black filter, and set it in the dark to get the proper dim.
Um guys there's an app called Darker which addresses this problem. I've been using it since the past month and it works as it should.

These smartphone apps never behave like I want them to. I especially had problems in low-light but not dark spaces, where cf.lumen kept turning on and off repeatedly, and Twilight (also often recommended) had some other problems, slight flickering sometimes I think. And none of them supported super-easy one-click pause and unpause (either you had to click more than once when turning them on or when pausing, or they were slow). Finally I found Darker, which does have automation in the Pro version, but in default you just turn it on and off by tapping the app icon, the darkening features are similar and it starts immediately.
If you're rooted I recommend cf.lumen. It works very well to adjust lighting and colour temperature dynamically, and as a rooted app, won't necessarily get kicked out of memory like the apps which work at a surface level do some times. Very carefree too.
That said, if you want more control to go even darker, Twilight as suggested already is very good, with a focus on easing you into sleep. Darker is also effective, and I even made the screen dark enough to be almost black once.

Update: I just got myself a pixel and found out that pixel filter doesn't work but I found another app called Darker, which as the name implies makes things darker but without the mesh overlay meaning you effectively don't miss out on resolution like you did with pixel filter, it works great so far and I personally paid for the app just to support the dev. This is the app I use. I seriously love it and use it every night. I'm definitely content with the free version because it has a decent amount of settings you can change, but the paid one has great features to. Highly recommend.
I use Darker, but mostly for lowering the screen brightness below what the system slider allows. Great for nighttime usage. I don't bother using the colored overlay, I let the system night mode handle that. Darker also has tasker integration, which makes automation work out well, too.
I use Darker and I see the same behavior. This is done to avoid some malware to use an overlay on top of the install button.
Let's say you make some kind app that include some undisclosed ability to show an overlay of any kind. Now, you want to install some kind of malware without the user to notice. It still requires some kind of human interaction to sideload an APK (at least on non-rooted device).
The malicious developer could fake an installation overlay, with a non-threatening app name, with fake minimal permission. And if you press Install, it actually launch the installation of that other APK behind that overlay.
I guess you can see how dangerous that could be now ;)
Also Darker does the same thing. Plus you can reduce the intensity up to 20% which is pretty damn dark even in darkness. I leave mine at 50% at night.

Text Aide 2.65MB Very under rated xposed module. It let's you select any text from any app and find it's definition, open as URL, TTS voice, dial, search in Wiktionary, Wikipedia, Google, Bing, Facebook, DDG, GitHub, StackOverflow, Youtube. These are opened in a small pop-up window so that you don't have to leave the app.
It also supports Macro Expansion.
I have an "oh fuck" kit I carry with me- caffeine pills, aspirin, anti-emetic (I take promethazine), a dose of my breakthrough pain med, earplugs, sunglasses, mouthwash, and a forehead sticky.
I take the pills with as much water as I can stomach as soon as the aura starts, pop in the earplugs, put on the shades, and try to get home to safety ASAP.
At home, I'll grab my gel eyemask from the freezer, plus an extra gel icepack for my neck, and then go hunker down in bed for the duration. I use this blackout curtain, which is awesome. Once things start winding down later, the app Darker is great too. I'll put on my noise-cancelling headphones over the earplugs (weird, but effective) and listen to podcasts or audiobooks very, very quietly.

This was exactly what I was looking for! I find the AOD / minimum brightness on Galaxy Watch 4 extremely bright, and too distracting, especially at night.
Unfortunately, it looks like it was removed from the Play Store, and I couldn't find the APK anywhere.
I tried a few Android dimmer apps (Darker, Screen Dimmer, Dimmer), they worked fine on Galaxy Watch 4, when the watch is on; but they failed to work on always-on display, which is the most crucial part.
I also tried customizing watchfaces; some watchfaces allow changing the text color to grey instead of white, which effectively lowers the brightness. But when on AOD, they go back to that bright white! It is so silly that the watch increases the brightness in the supposedly battery-friendly sleep mode.
So frustrating. Looks like I'll have to disable AOD when in dark rooms.

I don't have Edge, but I have Hush, which I believe has the same motor. It's strong and it feels amazing.

Then Vector may be a better option for you. (That shop includes free 2-day shipping.) It's basically We-Vibe's version of Edge. Just like Edge, it has dual motors and you can adjust its angle. Both toys are quite powerful.
Vector's advantage over Edge is that you can control it not only with an app, but also with the included physical remote. So looking at a screen is optional.
If you do decide to go with Edge, my favourite blue light filter app is Darker. You can even schedule it to turn on and off at specific times.

Don't know of one with quick tile support. I moved to Darker though from cf.lumen.
Maybe you find an app (like this?) that let's you make the screen completely (!) black.

The paid version lets you use a color filter if you want, too (like orange to cancel blue light).
Darker is simpler to configure and use, and has more options to customize than Twilight.
