If you use kore the official remote you can pretty much control kodi on any device. I don't use the ftv remote anymore the damn things just chew through batteries. I rarely use the directional pad on kore either you can swipe from the left for a context menu with the options for addons. In that menu once you have selected an add-on you can swipe once to the right and you have "content" ... It allows you to browse through any add-ons content selecting what you want or queue it up in a playlist without having to actually flick through it on kodi on your TV/PC or whatever your controlling I primarily use it on my phone (Nexus 6)
Other than the screen size no there really isn't any other advantage that I'm aware of

The Vero box (running OSMC / Kodi) is a really nice solution I'd recommend. It does come with its own remote, but if your TV supports pass-through it should allow you to use your main tv remote instead if you'd rather a simpler setup? Having just run OSMC on a Pi previously myself, I'd highly recommend the Vero as a serious step up and actually really good value for money imo.
As it's also just Kodi another nice option is to use the Kore app (assuming you're on Android) to control.
Also, you can use Kodi as a front-end to Emby using the Emby for Kodi add-on. I have three RPi3's running Kodi, connected to an Emby server. Update the library in Emby and all the Kodi devices get the same content, keep the same played information, etc. Also to mention the Kore remote control app for Android which allows you to control the whole thing from your phone/tablet.
I used to use Plex years ago, but I find Kodi+Emby+Kore to be a really great multi-set entertainment system that stays entirely local.
Yeah you can use the for the verizon trade in, along with a coupon code to increase in money recieved you can end up getting a 500 buck phone for next to nothing, then you can either sell the phone, make bank, or enjoy your new phone.
The thing that I wanna do next is pick up another few phones because I want to use them to set up media controllers for my tv's and htpc. You can load the phones with different software, including stuff like Kore which is a media remote for Kodi (media center software or htpc os) and there are versions of them for pretty much all the different home theater software. And there is software that if the phone has the right hardware you can use the remote on the tv itself as well.
If you decide that you just wanna get rid of them to avoid the hassle and make some cash instead then let me know, I might wanna take a few off ya, depending on what you have left bud, well, by "left" I mean what you are willing to get rid of after you get a ton of random projects suggested here on what to use them for haha
Yeah. It looks like I can pause a playing video with my TV's remote but that's it... control through the browser is pretty good but inconvenient if I don't have my laptop handy.

Once that's setup to control Kodi I use the YouTube app on my phone and share the video. One of the sharing options is "Play on Kodi" through the Kore app. I have no idea though if this works for more than just YouTube or not as that's all I use it for

I stream from a NAS using Samba. No issues. I've used Yatse (and it's great) but now that Kodi has an official remote app, Kore, I've been using that instead.
I use an old/cheap tiny PC (Intel NUC or any tinier Aliexpress ones) that is attached to the TV where my main system is. I run Ubuntu on it instead of Windows. I install Kodi and Spotify and I control both with their respective Apps on my phone. In Kodi, I have ALL my local Music and Videos. Depending on how big your library is, you could put bigger drive in there, if not, use a NAS.
So the "signal" goes like this:
Local music > Ubuntu with Kodi/Spotify > usb DAC > Integrated > Speakers

HDMI to the receiver is the easy and obvious choice, however without a display you will want to configure it somewhere with a display. You can control it with the Kore app, though I have struggled with some operations and rely on having a display. FHD are dirt cheap, so you might consider one for control, album art, slideshows, etc.
There are other options for audio better suited to specific cases, but no need to complicate things when you have a receiver.
As I mentioned, the Pi 3 is FHD (1920x1080) and HDMI 1.4 only, so no UHD or HDR. Installation on a MicroSD card is very easy and the configuration is a good combination of straightforward and powerful. Mine is currently sending 7.1 to my bedroom theater, with stereo set to spread across all speakers. My 1 TB disk is an old 7200 rpm spinning disk, but that has never been a problem. It's awesome.
Use LibreELEC image for your Raspberry. That will consume the whole Raspberry, but usually it is worth it.
Then you just SMB/CIFS-mount your Synology media share to your LibreELEC config, and off you go. Now the files in your NAS are just normal video files, no special conversions or other heavy stuff needed. Some older Raspberrys require a MPEG2-license (for abour 3 GBP), more recent Rapsberrys don't have that requirement any more.
LibreELEC can also use HDMI/CEC to work with your television remote controller and its arrow/ok/back-buttons etc. LibreELEC can also be nicely remote controlled by Android App Kore. And of course physical USB keyboard works as well, among other solutions.

I just use my phone.. Kodi on htpc, and Kore on phone. They connect via wifi. A lot of other mediaplayers have similar smartphone apps to control them. They usually run on your lock screen so you dont have to enter phone unlock pin code every time you want to use it. Works great, and I didn't have to spend any money on extra devices.

I actually use my cellphone to control my media pc, Kodi has an android app Kore which does a nice job of emulating a tv remote.
I've also got a Logitech K400 plus for tinkering, but it's not my daily driver.

I use the Logitech K400 keyboard in combination with the stock remote for my Sony TV.
The Sony's video control buttons are unused on my HTPC input. So I use FLIRC to make those keys control Kodi. The Sony remote also has yellow/blue/red/green buttons that are unassigned. I tied 2 of those in FLIRC to open and close Kodi. This remote can also control my HT receiver volume via ARC. It's the only time I've achieved true "one-remote" status.
I also have the official KODI control app on my phone, Kore. I rarely use it though.
I've also used Unified remote in the past. It works well. Just like Kore, I rarely use it.
I got one for £30 on Amazon, it was a Nexbox took a couple weeks to arrive but everything was preinstalled, only thing I hate about it is the remote control fixed that by downloading the kodi controllerapp.
It might be a cool to have a little app on the 3DS to run as a remote for another instance.
Kodi can host a web interface and other devices can control content playback or view the library from there.
I use this on my phone to control Kodi on a separate computer across the room, but I think the dual screens of the 3DS may be able to do something really cool with this idea.

Just install KODI and the exodus plugin and install the remote to your android attach to tv and never go outside again.

Probably not what you're looking for, but you could access your media with Kodi instead of VLC & use your cellphone as a remote to control kodi.
Kodi has an addon that integrates youtube quite nicely too.
There's probably a way to access your itunes library via kodi too, but I use spotify & have never looked into it.

You can stream movies/tv with the exodus plugin. It pulls from a bunch of video sites. You can also set up software to auto-torrent shows or to torrent shows on-demand, but you'll have to decide if that's something you want to do. I think the name is popcorn time? Yes, it would and I don't recommend it.
What you want to use instead is a free Media Center software like Kodi (the site appears to be down at the moment, check later). It scans directories containing your media (movies, TV shows, music, etc.), sorts it by genre, year cast, etc. so that you can easily select it and play it back, can be expanded with plug-ins (e.g. for streaming media) and has a nice, big UI that's made for TV. You can even use your phone as a remote:

It's an excellent piece of software, really brilliant.
An alternative to Kodi and based on an older version of that program but since independently developed is Plex. It has a slightly more modern-looking UI and is better at streaming content (there is also a premium subscription with more functions), but in my opinion it's not nearly as good at sorting and then finding content as Kodi. Naturally, there are remote apps for this program as well:

By the way, I tried to connect via a remote Kodi app on both iOS and Android without success.
Looking around the web, I've found these instructions that made it work. So if you want to try it here's how I've done it:
1)In terminal: sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon
2) Still in terminal: sudo nano /etc/rc.local (where nano might have to be replaced by one of your text editor, mine is mousepad)
3) Right before exit 0 add this line:
sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start
4) Back in terminal: sudo apt-get install iptables
5) Then: sudo nano /etc/rc.local
6) Add this right before exit 0:
/sbin/iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
sudo chmod +x /etc/rc.local
7) I've then shut down my system and launched Crouton and Kodi.
8) I then made sure these settings were set in Kodi.
9) I've installed the Kore remote app
10) Launched the Kore app, doing a search, it found my Kodi installation in crouton. Victory!
PS: I also did the same with "Kodi Remote" app in iOS successfully.

If you're anything like me is really hard to not get carried away and spend more than necessary given the goal your aiming at (like the thing with the 1070 I wrote).
If the system is to be used by older people and you have to have a remote, maybe a Lirc remote with KODI. If not, there's an android app named Kore which is a http based remote control that you can setup on your old man's phone with some minor learning curve but it will allow him to choose from the list of movies and series available on the drive.

You may be able use your TV remote with the Odroid via HDMI-CEC. This may require a setting on the TV be switched on (eg. Allow CEC or Allow AnyConnect) and then certain buttons on your remote control (like the arrow buttons, select button, etc.) will be sent to the Odroid via the HDMI cable. See:

Only requirement is both phone and Odroid need to be connected to the same network. Enable "remote control" in the interface settings on the Odroid.

Finally you can use the IR receiver on the Odroid-C2 and receive Remote control commands via that, but that can be difficult to setup as it may require keymap.xml and perhaps other files be made for your remote. Details at:

what type of TV do they have? have you ever heard of HDMI CEC, where you can get signals from the TV's native remote control sent back thru the HDMI lead? kodi has an automated plugin for it. it's called other proprietry names by certain companies like panasonic, but it's all the same.
i'v got a Feilan FL-102 rf remote control which is okay because it's got a learning function, but frustrating because the grey thing in the middle of the arrows is a mouse wheel, not the "ok" button, and it's not an MCE remote, it just sends straight keystrokes.
do they have cellphones / mobiles? there's also Kore for android or iphone, which both work thru wifi.
also, if they're just going to use it for watching videos, i'd suggest a Raspberry Pi 3 with OSMC installed. i'm using one myself, all three input methods above work with it, it uses about 5% of the electricity of the PC it replaced, and because it doesn't have a fan, it's also silent. they're also damned cheap. only real issue is that you need externally powered devices (like hard disks or game controllers)

Kodi's new-and-improved Kore (Android app) might work until you find a good remote.
Of course, i done it a few months before i got a PS4, you can even install Crackle, and Netflix on it. And if your Tv supports it, you can control the media center app with your tv remote via HDMI, or use a bluetooth controller. Its really easy to set it up.
