It displays the distance in feet until you get past one mile. If you're measuring distances on fairways, they should not be longer than one mile. Edit: in the web browser on a PC, this is true. On Google maps on an Android phone this is not true.
Edit: or, if you have Android, get the app, Maps Measure (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.mapsmeasure&hl=en). Once you get your distance line, tap the menu icon in the lower left, tap Units and then it will display meters, km, feet, yards, miles, nautical miles, and area all on one screen.
I use Maps Measure to measure distances and areas in google maps, it's really handy since maps removed it.

That "refutation" was this one-liner: "short answer: no. long answer: nooooo" on Twitter. I wouldn't take that as an official statement and from what I remember from the discussions in the summer, the conclusion was not that crystal clear - at least as far as Android was concerned (with Google Play Services).
But after trying two other map-related apps (Maps measure and Google My Maps) that use the Google Maps API, it seems that indeed offline maps are not shared between apps. In airplane mode, they don't work in areas for which there is offline data for Google Maps.
Definitely use conductive ink to do the range mod and have a head mounted magnifying glass to use while doing it. I applied the ink with the tip of a needle. It's very small stuff indeed. The range is absolutely fine los flying with lemon Rx's. I found I needed to switch to the orange rx 110xl long antenna rx for my fpv quad. In an open field fpv I'm flying this field with no issues at all:

I had two failsafes before upping the transmitter to the full 150mw.
I was standing under the tree marked at the end of the cul de sac. You can see I was transmitting through a bunch of trees. It dropped out behind that big tree at the end:
The other one was in better sight line and I got behind this tree and it glitched but recovered:

Overall I've been very happy with the devo7e. I have been using it for more than a year. I have a 2.4ghz 2dbm swivel antenna that I need to install on it that should improve range/stability of connection further. Fpv may test it more in heavily tree lined areas but as long as you fly within the limits of the gear you should be fine. Like you I'd probably hop on the taranis bandwagon but for the $.
