Sproggiwood is one of my all-time favorites, and not mentioned yet. It's pricey, but it's a complete game with no in-app purchase crap that should give you many hours of enjoyment.
I like Sproggiwood (Google Play, Apple Store).
The theme and the mechanics are light but it fits the mobile platform well.
1+ for Sproggiwood, though it isn't exactly like what you described.
When you play through dungeons, you can get money, and using this money you can increase your health, buy items, speed up growth, and do other things that make your character stronger...all of these effects stay with you between games, so even though you start out as a level 1 character each play, you become a more powerful level 1 character the longer you play.
The game is also slightly adorable.
It's also on Google Play and Steam, so that satisfies your Android request.
Sproggiwood was $4.99 now $1.99
This is the spitting image of the Steam version and when this game originally came out it was $9.99 so if you like Rogue Likes you're gonna love this.
Sproggiwood isn't very similar to Caves of Qud, but it is made by the same people.
If you really want retro, DCSS and Nethack both have mobile versions.
The game is also 60% off on the Google Play Store and the Apple Store:
Sproggiwood has some pretty challenging tactical gameplay on Savage mode and plays beautifully on mobile devices. Don't let the cuteness throw you off. Play store link
Your best bet for a native Android game is probably Sproggiwood
Or emulate one of the Mystery Dungeon games on SNES, PS1, GBA, DS, or PSP. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Dungeon
Sproggiwood is has type of turn based game that gets pretty challenging, but is is satisfying to think of the strategy needed.
If you like Final Fantasy, several of them have been ported to Android, I just haven't tested how good the ports are.
Sproggiwood is at the top of my list, along with Geometry Wars 3, which I see someone has linked to already. Both of these have consumed hours upon hours of my time.
Linkme: Sproggiwood, Geometry Wars 3
The simplest and most forgiving intro to more traditional roguelikes on Android is Sproggiwood. I see that there are crashing issues being reported, though I never had any issues when I played it on Android years ago.
If you want something free, try Cardinal Quest 2.
Sproggiwood is on sale right now, but the page has a warning:
>*** Designed for newer devices. Requires minimum 1GB of RAM. See list of tested devices at the bottom. ***
So I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, which does have more than one GB of RAM, but I'd like to be sure if I can run it before purchasing. Can anyone here clarify what they mean about "newer" devices?
Thank you, I guess those are the closest I'll get. If I enjoyed permadeath, what I'm looking for could be summed up in Roguelike because a lot of them are Turn-Based, Grid-Based Movement Dungeon Crawlers. I just wanted to see if I could find a Roguelike without permadeath. Somehow Sproggiwood achieved a great balance with permadeath but was too short.

I only did this cuz I'm bored and still full from dinner and needed something to do... not to take away the viewership of the video. It's got some gameplay footage in there if you want to know more about the games. If you like these rankings you should watch the video to support the maker of the video so they can continue making these videos for you.
If you like the more puzzley mobile games, I recommed
Sproggiwood - Cuter style and a bit longer runs.
MicRogue - Chess like positioning. A bit short but fun.
Aldarix the Battlemage - tactical spellcasting focused, very much designed for casual coffebreak play (disclosure: I made it).
and may be "Sproggiwood"

I personally like Sproggiwood and Cardinal Quest 2. Also, I'm currently working on Another Quest for Android, there is still some work to do but it is perfectly playable.
This is a really good and accessible roguelike by the creators of the highly praised Caves of Qud. If you're new to the roguelike genre then Sproggiwood is a good place to start.
The game is also available on iOS and Android, but it does not look like the mobile version of the game is currently on sale.
You can also download the old version of Caves of Qud for free from their website: www.freeholdgames.com/?page_id=39

Sproggiwood is of very high quality and has permanent progression.
Sproggiwood and Cardinal Quest 2 are good!
Also, I'm working on Another Quest for Android but maybe it is too simple for you.
On Android, controller support:

What kind of games do you like to play?
Sproggiwood is an amazing turn based strategy game however you have to purchase it to play.
Grimvalor is a really good 2-d action rpg with a playable demo. Rest of the game is unlocked through purchase.
Mythgard is a collectable card game (like Hearthstone) which is very free-to-play friendly.
Iron Marines is a real-time-strategy + tower defense hybrid that has no ads but requires a small purchase fee. You can play (and finish) the whole with no additional purchases although there are in-game heroes and other stuff if you want to support the developers further.
If you do not mind the occasional ad then check out:-
Soul Knight is a rogue-like twin-stick shooter that is a LOT of fun to play.
Dungeon Tales is a rogue-like card battler which is completely free-to-play. You can pay to remove ads (very rare) and get the new character but the game is a blast even without paying.
It's on sale on the Google play store as well https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.freeholdgames.sproggiwood
It just went on sale too.
