Hermit on android is wonderful for this. Mobile site wrapper. Makes "lite apps" with full control over geo and push via browser.

And if you’d like even stronger privacy protection, try Hermit, which can isolate your Facebook session from the rest of your Chrome browsing. Otherwise, Facebook can track you on all sites that have their Like button installed.
Hermit, for:
Amazon
eBay
IMDb
Trakt.tv
Local Weather website
Wikipedia
I could probably add a few more if I dig into my installed apps.
Edit:
I just learned about Spotify Lite, it's pretty good so far:
Hermit always deserves a shout out. It turns websites into lite apps so you don't have to download every app for every company/provider/store/brand. My only complaint is not having enough websites to turn into lite apps. Right now I have IKEA, Rotten Tomatoes and TripAdvisor and I can't think of more.
For this reason alone I started to use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab After I installed many of my phone apps, as little apps I've deleted the original ones. Now my phone & my tablet has 12 less apps and even the battery's are happy.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab Basically it makes a website into an actual app you can launch. Good for sites that don't have an official app and/or you don't want to deal with bookmarks in the browser.
I've had good luck using this app with letterboxd and other sites that either don't have an app or is unnecessary to have their app installed.
My vote is for Hermit:
Hermit • Lite Apps Browser
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
Hermit • Unlocker
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab.premium.unlocker
I have created over 100 Hermit lite apps that are extremely useful and easy to use. I highly recommend Hermit.
The hermit app might be able to make some websites good to use. Especially for things like The Independent because their app is absolute shit.
Is this the kind of thing you were going for?
a good work around is the app Hermit it creates webwrapper apps for any service, currently using it for amazon, Google+, and CL. Notifications work, keeps activity out of history, none of your browsing in a hermit app will be in your chrome history.
from the dev's description
NO HISTORY TRACKING. Hermit does not save browsing history. Use Hermit confidently for private browsing.
AD BLOCKER: No plug-ins required. Regularly-updated block list. No subscription fees. No root required.
Popup Blocker.
Do Not Track setting.
Location permission asked every time (no background location).
No background access to Photos, Videos, or Files.
Is there a function the app has that you need and isn’t available on the mobile site? Either use amazon.com on your browser, or use Hermit to make a sandboxed web app.
That should fix almost every problem you might have.
if you're having speed issues, first thing i would check is background services eating up resources.
enable dev options
Reboot
go under dev options
open running services.
anything you see there that isn't essential (something you want running 24/7) should be uninstalled and replaced with a lightweight alternative. Many apps can be replaced with lightweight web wrappers like Hermit. i use this to replace heavy handed apps like amazon and ebay on my older nexus 7.
Hermit - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
other option while in dev options to help speed things is to turn off animations. once you get used to it the speed increase is appreciated.
I use the app Hermit. It turns websites into stand alone apps. So I have one for Facebook and the mobile version of Facebook Messenger.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
I like to use Hermit for 'web apps' like this. A little extra functionality, like search and sharing, and I don't have to clutter my home screen for every one of these I make.
Try Hermit — it lets you choose permissions for every single Lite App (since it works for any site, not just Facebook). You can even disable a certain permission for all lite apps at once.
~~And if it must be an 'app', get Hermit and create a Lite App with it pointing at the Google folder. ~~ ~~Only thing is everyone would need to make the lite app on each device, I think, don't think you could export it as a finished piece (although I could be wrong)~~
EDIT - ignore all of that /u/keyring88, I've just tried to do it to see if I could share a created app. Turns out you can, quite well, but Hermit doesn't seem to play nice with Google Photos, which is a shame.
EDIT 2 - It DOES seem to work with Google Drive though. So to make an app you can send to your family:
/u/chimbori may be able to advise further on this as it's his app.
EDIT 3 - created this dummy lite app to see how sharing works. If you install Hermit and then download and run this file ( I appreciate you have no guarantee that that file isn't dodgy!)
You should then have an app pointing to the URL of a temporary folder I set up in Drive.
I know there might be a better solution than this. But until someone reply a better solution, try this.
Open Google Play Newsstand. Search Android police. Click + button to subscribe. Click on 3 dot menu. Click add it to homescreen.
You can also try hermit. And add that website to your home screen. It makes lite apps from website.
If it's a chosen few forums then Hermit will probably work well although I've never tried it for this purpose myself.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en_GB
I use Hermit to make a lite app for masterani.me.
Hermit has an option to block ads and make it look just like an app.
Have to kill Facebook services and maybe disable auto update on play services.
You can always run ADB Shell to debloat, remove all Facebook services and Facebook from your phone and use an lite based alternative like Hermit
Basically an enhanced bookmark for any website. Customize it through various options. Block ads, dark mode, etc. Very lightweight, Hermit itself is only 3mb.
It's completely free if you want it to be, this premium unlocker adds Reader mode and allows for custom scripts.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
Create a "lite" version of Facebook by using Hermit. It uses no power when idle and is a fraction of the actual Facebook app size.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
1.) WebApps on Fdroid repository Free and open-source.
2.) Hermit on Playstore Basic features free, has a a premium if you want the advanced features or want to support the project.
To be clearer, this is ONLY the unlocker for the premium features of this free app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
In other words, install the free app, first...
Edit: In and of itself, the unlocker is just a quick 284kb download...
I just made a chrome page for it to use on mobile, the site fits a phone screen nicely and you can always change where inventory items are placed in the item description (should be a drop down for container)
If you want to make a proper app for it, maybe try looking into Hermit?
Half of the reason Tumblr removed porn is so that their app would be allowed in Apple app store. Don't worry, we can still have a porn app on our phones ;)
The developers can still make app and let users download it from their website as opposed to play store. That's what PornHub does.
Or you can make a custom app that is just a website pretending to be an app. It's actually quite good.
> Is this a good idea to save battery and improve my phone in general or no?
It's a very good idea. I did replace facebook, messenger, twitter and other stuff with their web apps. Saves a lot of juice.
I didn't do it with the browser, I have nothing against it, but there's an app for this special purpose to replace apps with their web apps. The app is Hermit.
It has a nice integrations with many of the websites and it looks like you are using an app. IT ACTUALLY REPLACES FACEBOOK MESSENGER, so no more battery drain from those chat heads.
Is it an app made by facebook? No thanks.
I've been using Hermit to keep FB's bullshit sandboxed as much as possible.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.piebridge.brevent
Si con todo esto sigue andando lento, no se que más podrías hacer que no sea cambiarlo.
Espero te ayude!
Why not use something trustworthy like Hermit - A google play store app creates shortcuts and individual browser wrappers for any site you want, has tons of prebuilt recipes, can create your own custom sidebars, notifications, can poll rss and things for notifications, custom ringtones, vibrations, etc,. Fantastic app, I use it to replace majority of the sites that either don't have an app or have a horrible one. Best of all it blocks ads/tracking, and links opened within one of it's wrappers are isolated within its individual wrapper, and each site has all its own options and configurations, so you can selectively allow or deny access to things like location, or storage, or mic/camera. Only stupid thing is you have to create two wrappers one for facebook and one for messenger, but that is crapbooks fault, not Hermit's fault.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en https://github.com/chimbori/lite-apps
you can make your own lite apps with webwrapper apps like hermit for android. i use it to replace bloated or downright shitty apps like amazon. they have some prepackaged webwrapper lite apps for a lot of common services. first 2 are free, paid if you want more than that. Great for battery draining social media apps like FB and IG and even has notification support.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
Hermit - Lite Apps Browser "Lite Apps take up very little space, don’t run in the background, save your battery, and Hermit can create them instantly!"
I was using Hermit, but recently they said Facebook is disabling their notification feed, affecting their app and every app that uses the same feature. I guess this is Facebook's way to get people to use their shitty shitty app :(
a good workaround is hermit it creates an HTML5 wrapper for the webpage of the app, letting you do most functions without the constantly running service, account sync, invasive permissions, etc... i use it to replace amazon, google+, and am trying out replacing google photos since i see nearly 100 wakelocks a day from it. there is no background usage from a hermit app.
One problem here is that Chrome won’t remember that you wanted a certain site to be opened in Desktop Mode if you open it once that way. Hermit is my way of fixing this. Set it to open in Desktop Mode once, and it’ll remember it.
Have you tried Hermit? Create a Lite App for YouTube Subscriptions: http://hermit.chimbori.com/create?url=m.youtube.com%2Ffeed%2Fsubscriptions
Some native apps, notoriously Facebook, run in the background and eat up more battery than they should. There’s no real reason to install native apps for news, sports, stocks, social networks, shopping and other content-heavy stuff when their Web apps are equally good and much better with battery life.
Use Hermit to create your own Lite Apps for sites you visit frequently.
You could use Hermit to create a Lite App:
Hermit • Lite Apps Browser
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
Hermit • Unlocker
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab.premium.unlocker
A web app could be turned into an Android app using Hermit.
As a Mac and Android user, I'm waiting for the web app to drop before I officially subscribe to Bear Premium.
Hermit Lite Apps Browser is an app I bought quite a while ago and at that time I was not too impressed with it. About a month ago I tried it again and I must say that I'm impressed at how well it works:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab.premium.unlocker
I uninstalled all social media apps on my Note 3 and use Hibernate instead. A bonus is my phone doesn't phone home to them and I don't get any notifications.
Hermit by Chimbori is a great client for youtube and others like Amazon, ebay, etc. I love the no background battery drain.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
See Hermit.
It allows you to create an app out of any mobile website. To use it, just browse to the site in Hermit, log in, and click a button to make it it's own little mobile application, complete with a Home Screen link.
Depending on the site, you can setup things like notifications (from RSS feeds) and an omnipresent search button (if there's a stable link to search throughout the app). A recent update also added ad-blocking.
Btw, I'm not the dev. Just a happy user.
I use Hermit in Android. It's basically a web wrapper but it has an adblocker integrated. Obviously this is not the solution for the problem, but it's a work-around.
check out hermit, it creates lite apps of services to use in place a hamfisted apps like ebay, amazon, IG, etc... it's free for the first 2 apps, paid if you want more than that. Adblock, keeps your lite app usage out of chrome history, no background services, and optional javascript. notifications were working previously for services like FB, but i don't see that in the description anymore so it's possibly no longer working.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
It's not an app but sternest meanings is great for finding anagrams.
http://www.sternestmeanings.com/
You could try making it an app with the Hermit app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
Freezing/Disabling the Facebook app will make a great difference.
Or just uninstall it, use Hermit app to make a webapp for facebook. Much better.
Yes, this works, but it is very limited in my opinion. Here are a few things Chrome doesn’t do (but should) when adding icons to the home screen.
Every time you tap on the icon, it opens a new tab. Even if you have the same site open in another tab. This means that you need to wait around until that same site is reloaded. And then you end up with 10’s or 100’s of the same site open in separate tabs.
Unless the site defines a theme_color
or a Web manifest, Chrome does not use a color for the tab. Basically, you have to wait for the site to implement their own theme color, with no way to change it.
If Chrome is actually treating the Web app as an app, it’d be nice to see full-screen and frameless support.
If you want to open a site in Desktop Mode every time, Chrome won’t remember it.
I felt Lite Apps could use a lot better integration with Android, so I created Hermit. It fixes all the above issues, and introduces new features like Bookmarks, site-specific Permissions and Privacy controls, and a separate cookie jar (with Notifications coming soon!)
To be fair, the site behaves responsively on mobile and as such, it is not a terrible pain to use in the browser. You can use an app like Hermit Crab to make it into an "app".
I do not know about any text only apps. But this app Hermit Crab allows you to make an "app" using the browser version of the app.
I am just assuming this uses a lot less data than the stock app. However I have not tested it.
I use Hermit to make an app of just Reddit Chat because I hate the official Reddit app, and Chat doesn't work with any 3rd party apps.
Yes, they're apps on the Play store. Here is the link to hermit. I'm using the beta version of Island, so it won't let me link to it. Just search for it on the Play store in the Apps section. If you want a FOSS app, you can use Insular. It's a fork of Island.
I see the problem. The app Hermit may be able to help. It's essentially a browser, that is intended to create "lite" apps - browser-based access to app web sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc., to avoid the tracking and overhead associated with the official apps You can login within the app independent of the accounts configured on your device. I have the paid version, which offers sandboxed profiles within the app, allowing you to login to one account in one profile, while logging into another account in another profile, and neither profile can see the logins in the other profile. If you're not already using the app for something else, you may be able to do what you want with the free version, without the need for sandboxed profiles.
Among other things, I use the app for accessing a Google Voice account for my home voicemail, which uses a Google account specifically for that service, that I don't want configured as an account globally on my devices.
Without installing anything, a quick way to see if this might work for you would be to access the calendar in question within your browser, which should also let you login without adding an account on your device. My testing shows that this is limited to "Day" and "Month" views.
What if you made an account and saved those preferences. Maybe use a browser that doesn't clear cookies?
You could also try using hermit
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
I have lineage on my phone and for some reasons it throws an error when i try to login. So I use Hermit an app that convert web pages into app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
for me who doesn't use twitter other than to browse twitter/follow people using Hermit to create a lite app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&gl=US
I never knew what and how this app works.
But if I'm not mistaken, it sort of "transforms" a web version of an app into a good, easily accessible shortcut. And I think it has some other goodies like ad-blockers.
Please someone save me, I suck when it comes to tech stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hermit is one of my most used paid apps. Especially as it seems more services are using PWAs instead of full blown mobile apps.
If you can get some kind of browser isolating app like Native Alpha or Hermit (I'm using Hermit) you can save the Yelp website as a PWA. It's important here to use the desktop site instead of the mobile one. The mobile one without their app is trash that keeps redirecting you to their app and hamstrings most of the functions. But the desktop site is actually great and fully featured! This can potentially supplement your Gmaps with the reviews and opening times while still isolating it from data collection
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
If you want to take it a step further, and have a much smoother experience, I advice you to download Hermit (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=it&gl=US).
It's a fantastic app that allows you to create lite apps from web pages. You can open a web page like its an app, with its own indivdual window (not a tab in the browser), also it's faster and customizable (dark mode, character font, color and size etc...).
You can use it both with pages that don't have a native app (like Leekduck, Pvpoke, gamepress...) and to replace apps with a "light" version of them
Hermit makes websites into web apps which open like it's a real app. You just have to give it the url of the website: I recommend to use the follow page, since Hermit open when you open the app
Link to Hermit: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
I use Hermit to create web browser dedicated apps. You can customize them the way you want, and still have the privacy control that is lacking in most dedicated apps.
I use Hermit (google play store)
it can make any website into an app, it is basically just a browser which opens RR website as if its an app

You can replace many apps using Hermit.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en_US&gl=US
The experience is not as good as a native app. The benefits are reduced resource usage, and increased privacy.
What about hermit it has options for frameless and full screen once you set up a lite app. Not sure if it's on Amazon app store but on play store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
More people need to know more about this app.
<strong>Hermit</strong> - Lite Apps Browser
"With Hermit, you can replace your large native apps with Web-based Lite Apps.
Browse faster, save data, block ads, protect your privacy, browse in Night Mode, Reader View, and customize your Lite Apps with over 20 different settings for every Lite App! All in a 3 MB app. "
From my experience this one is using very little battery. It's necessary to play with it because it's very different from all others ( it's like a virtual machine for accessing apps like on the PC - therefore it's using very little all ( data, battery, phone ram and power ) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
This would be an interesting use case for Hermit. Though creating Lite Apps is its main purpose, any URL that does not have a Lite App configured for it, opens exactly as you describe: light-weight viewer, no URL field. Plus, there’s a built-in Reader Mode for extra lightness.
So if you download it but don’t create any Lite Apps, and set it as your default browser, it will act exactly as you want it to.
(If it’s not obvious from the flair, I’m the developer. All of what I described is possible using the free version of Hermit.)
Edit: Oh, and it’s all Incognito by default.
Hermit would work for this. It basically is a wrapper that can make an app out of a lite browser page. Once you point it to the page, create an app, it places a shortcut on your desktop. It has some good options, there's a free and paid version.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
You can use the "browse url" command to open the router settings page, and use autoinput to do a series of taps to reboot your router, you could also create an "app" for the router setting page using Hermit, and launch it using tasker, I like to do that when I need to open the same page often.
There could be better ways to do this though, have a look at this post
If you guys web apps, why aren't you Android Folks using hermit?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en_CA&gl=US
For anyone wanting an android app before the original comes out:
I use Hermit, which creates an "app" out of any website you want, in this case the remnote website.
Not perfect but I find it useful!
I use an official client on my smartphone because it has the resources to do so. On a budget tablet, I have created a lite app for Reddit via Hermit and use it.
I use the pre-made Instagram app that comes with Hermit. I actually didn't notice that it had no ads until your post made me check.
I can recommend the app Hermit, which lets you create wrapper apps, which you can fine tune. The created wrapper apps look and feel like real apps and there are no browser buttons etc.
Neat, but I'm not really excited for these additional features. But no matter, I'm glad to be a pro subscriber and finally be able to support this launcher. I dig that it's so minimal and efficient and I won't be moving away from it any time soon.
Right now I only see two features that would improve my experience:
Keep up the great work.
I have had this issue for quite some time too. Apart from Microsoft News, and individually getting official apps that have Dark Mode like NYTimes and WaPO, there is Hermit. Basically it turns the mobile webpage into an app, so it can work for the news, amongst other things. I use that for BBC, Reuters, Ars Technica, and RNZ. They all work well, and there are 37 "ready-made" news "apps" on it, but you can also make your own.
Hermit. Use Hermit.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en_US

"' "configured' some code via a website" He needs to "compile" it and install it on his iPhone.
If your on Android look at Hermit (play store link), you can just do this in an app.
I got rid of the app ages ago, and switched to one that used the mobile website instead (Hermit).
Suddenly gained a ton of battery life, and no more concerns about Facebook having ridiculous access to the data on my phone, only the data I decide to feed it - as it should be.
Now I only really use the site itself to keep up with a handful of friends and family, and a local meetup group.
I haven't personally used Hermit because I have a 16gb Walmart phone, but.. it replaces large native web-based apps with a more 'lite' version. Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Youtube all can be used within Hermit and it does include built in ad-blocker.
I don't know if the message "download our app" would be blocked.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
This was posted on /r/android a few weeks back, but its still beloved in that sub.
If you can deal with the small downgrade, Hermit is a great alternative. Does a bunch of other apps as well. Can be customized as well.
I switched to an app called Hermit that's available on the play store and converts the FB website into an app like experience. Yes it works with messenger, no permissions, no tracking, low power and battery use, no ADs, and the light version is free. I'm using the paid version thanks to my google survey credits. :)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
I don't use microsoft but since there are no responses yet check out Hermit. It let's you turn lite websites into apps, sort of. I use it for facebook and messenger and a few other things.
you might have better luck in /r/androidapps
Sounds like a good use case for Hermit! Saw your post, and just added “Add to Wishlist” as a share target for the Amazon Lite App. If you go ahead and set up the Amazon Lite App from the Hermit Library, you should see that in the list when you share anything (article, text) from any Android app.
Hermit is 50% off too, for all 5 days of the Diwali festival!
Please help spread the word, especially to /r/googleplaydeals who don’t like us posting our own apps there.
Happy Diwali! दिवाली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं!
Exactly. Here's an app that uses the mobile version of Facebook (and a ton of other apps) and uses no resources. I've been using it for months now. Much better battery life. The notification system isn't as good, especially for messenger.

That's strange ! What if you use another browser? For example brave or firefox ?
Also Did you try Hermit? If all web browsers fail, you will be able to create truecaller webpage using this app. (It is even better than normal shortcut.)
Hermit • Lite Apps Browser is great for making webpages act like apps, without all the bullshit. The free trial will let you set up two webpages for free so you can see how it works (very well btw).
Your phone only has 2GB RAM, it's barely enough for a modern smartphone. I'd recommend getting something with 3GB minimum (you could buy a second-hand LG G3 for instance or a Nextbit Robin, both of which are pretty decent yet cheap).
Anyways if you don't want to buy another phone then I'd recommend the following:
Finally, you could use Kernel Adiutor to tweak Android's low memory killer values to make it a bit more aggressive in killing off apps, but I'd be careful with this as too aggressive values can lead to apps getting killed unnecessarily leading to poor battery life and longer loading times.
Have a look at hermit - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
If you use any type of social media apps Hermit can greatly increase your battery life and memory space by replacing the bloated battery hogging app with a "Lite" version. The Lite version of apps uses the official mobile websites of the social media giants, wrapped in the android webkit so they are much smaller and idle when you are not using it. They feel like native apps because shortcuts/icons are made that you simply click on to launch, just like a native app. There are also many other benefits regarding security and customization.
Almost every website these days has a bloated app available, if you frequent the site often enough to make it worthwhile but not enough that you want yet another app on your device, Hermit can make it a lite app..any website, with a icon you can move around and simply click to launch right to it.
The free version allows two free lite apps to be created, try it out. If you like it then it is worth spending some credits on.
You could probably install apps that let you have web wrappers instead of the entire app.
Hermit Lite Apps Browser is great!
I dont know if you have ever heard of Hermit..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
Hermit makes "lite" versions of bloated apps by wrapping the mobile version of the websites in the android webkit. The resulting "lite" app is a fraction of the size of the original and uses no battery when idle. Give it a try, you can have two lite apps for free, you will have to purchase it for more.
You can probably expect that the youtube adaway extension probably wont work with it but it will be a lot smaller and wont have a large ad cache.

Hermit is ready for Android Nougat with Multi-Window for all Lite Apps
Hi ! We’ve just updated Hermit to support the latest and greatest version of Android and the new features it brings. If you are running Android Nougat beta, you will be able to use multiple Lite Apps at the same time in multiple windows on screen. Best of all, you don’t have to wait for all the other native apps to implement this one by one.
Hermit can now run with Zero Permissions (yes, zero dangerous permissions, only Internet needed) on Marshmallow unless you want to use specific features such as location when checking in to a place, or upload photos or videos. You can also turn off a permission previously granted to a specific Lite App.
Full changelog available at hermit.chimbori.com/changes.
What is Hermit?
Hermit lets you create Lite Apps out of your commonly-used web sites. Think of it like a super-powered version of Chrome’s Add to Home Screen feature.
How is Hermit better than creating a home screen shortcut in Chrome?
Many users ask us why they should use Hermit when Chrome already allows you to add an icon to the home screen. We specifically built Hermit because we feel Chrome is not good enough, and our 1300+ reviewers with 5 stars agree with us. Here’s why:
AD BLOCK. Hermit has a built-in ad blocker with a regularly-updated block list, with no subscription fees, and no root required. Chrome on Android does not have an ad blocker & does not support extensions.
LITE APPS ARE NOT JUST ANOTHER BROWSER TAB. Chrome opens a new tab every time you click on an icon. That’s not how native apps work. With Hermit, if you tap on an icon and you already have that app open, it will launch instantly no new tab, no waiting for the page to be downloaded again.
MERGED TABS. Your Lite Apps appear alongside your native apps. Chrome used to have this feature, they called it Merged Tabs, but it’s going away & already removed from Chrome Dev builds. To us, this is the most important part of the Lite Apps experience, and Hermit will not be moving away from this any time soon.
SEPARATE COOKIES TO LIMIT TRACKING. Hermit Lite Apps don’t share cookies with your other Chrome browsing, so tracking scripts such as the Facebook Like button cannot track your Hermit browsing.
NO HISTORY TRACKING. Hermit does not add every page to your browser history.
NOTIFICATIONS. Hermit supports Notifications for any RSS feed from any site, a technology which is implemented by several million sites! Chrome only supports push notifications if a site implements it on their end (and 99.99%+ sites don’t).
SETTINGS REMEMBERED FOR EVERY LITE APP. Even if you add an icon for a web site to Chrome, it will not remember the settings you chose for it. E.g. the “Request desktop site” setting is forgotten, and you will need to toggle it manually every single time you open the web site.
AWESOME BOOKMARKS. In Hermit, only the bookmarks relevant to the current Lite App are shown in the Sidebar, making them very easy to find and use. Try it. Chrome’s Bookmarks UI has not changed since the early days of Netscape, and many users are left with 100’s or 1000’s of bookmarks that they can never find again.
CUSTOMIZABLE UI FOR EACH LITE APP. Want to open one Lite App in Desktop mode, but others in Mobile mode? You can do that! Disable loading images for one specific Lite App? Yep, possible. Always launch YouTube in full-screen mode? Yep, you get the idea. Chrome does not even remember the “Request desktop site” setting for each site, even if you add the icon to the home screen.
CUSTOM PRIVACY SETTINGS. You can turn on or off each permission, including geolocation, photos, videos, and file uploads for each Lite App.
NATIVE APPS BLOCKED. Hermit blocks the installation of native apps, so you cannot get a virus or malware from a Lite App. You will never suddenly see your phone taken over by a malicious advertisement wanting you to download a native app which will damage your device.
THEMES & ICONS. Pick from a million different themes and use your own icons.
FULL-SCREEN & FRAMELESS MODES. Chrome does not support either of these modes for entire sites (it only supports full-screen for videos if the site owner decides to implement it.)

Posted in my own parent comment, but consider Hermit as a customisable wrapper when you're using a mobile site like an app.
Hermit is an app which lets you make mobile websites into apps. It's seriously cool, check it out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
Hermit is probably what you're looking for.
> I feel like even with the monster specs android phones are getting they are still sluggish. How about one year they stop trying to add cores and megapixels and just focus on why it takes 2 seconds from hitting the home button to actually going to the home.
O should help a lot here. i am the guy my group of friends come to when they're having phone problems, and 90% of the time it's because they have 10 apps they installed and forgot about with permanent background services, eating up resources leaving a fraction behind for a smooth UX. This won't be possible on O, as background services will have a visual element like a permanent notification letting the user know a background service is active, and killing off nonessential background services
hopefully OEMs don't disable this just to hide all their bloat.
edit - if you want to see what is running in the background on your phone, enable dev options, reboot, then go to dev options>running services to see what apps are always running even if you haven't opened it in months. you should have a good reason for every app on the list to be there, and consider lightweight alternatives for apps that offend. something like hermit can create lightweight replacement apps for most popular social media apps and other offenders like amazon.
Yeah, that app is terrible, try using Hermit to make a Facebook Messenger "Lite App."
I use Hermit which is a browser for lite apps.
first thing is check running services (it's under dev options) after a reboot. this will show you all the background services on your phone. you should recognize everything there and have a reason why each service needs to be running 100% of the time. most of the battery problems people have on an android phone is because of an app they installed. Android will let you ruin your battery life. if you see some app you rarely use, or a social media app that started at boot consider finding a lite version (hermit is great for making custom lite apps for any app), uninstalling it, or using something like greenify to keep it from running in the background. consider something like package disabler to get rid of samsung's bloat if you have a skinned version of android.
after that, check under settings>accounts>google. there are a dozen google services syncing in the background all the time. turn off sync for services you don't use. if you don't mind having google apps like gmail sync only when you open them, disable sync all together.
if you are on 6.0 or later, install ForceDoze. it makes deep doze mode kick in as soon as the screen is off and ignores movement. you can whitelist messaging apps like hangouts to prevent delayed notifications. this does a great job of preventing wakelocks while the screen is off.
that will get you 90% of the way there on a stock device without root. the last 10% is nitty gritty and requires root, xposed, and flashing custom kernels.

Hermit update brings Customizable Notifications for all your Lite Apps (including Facebook)
Quick feature overview: http://imgur.com/a/yumg7
Hermit’s latest update (4.0) offers the best-in-class notifications system. Not only can you change the icon and sound of every notification, you can also configure the vibrate pattern for each Lite App separately — All of these features are unique to Hermit.
Want your Facebook notifications to have the [f] logo, a custom ringtone, and vibrations that go 'brr-brrrrrrr-brr'? Hermit can do that.
Want to be notified of TechCrunch articles or Hacker News posts, but with no ringtone and no vibrations & a newspaper icon? Yep, that too.
Want to check feeds every 5 minutes? Hermit can do it without hammering your battery too much. It uses Android APIs that are specifically recommended by Google for battery efficiency.
Configure feeds automatically or manually — your choice. For Facebook, it’s just one click and you’re all set. (We could have made it fully automatic, but not everyone appreciates notifications that are turned on automatically.)
All of this, fully available in the free version, forever. No premium purchase necessary, no unlock key or payment involved.
Plus, all the awesome Hermit features that you have come to love over time:

you can try hermit (it uses mobile sites to replace apps) and you can adjust font size. I use it for twitter and works great.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
I use Hermit with good success
another trick i find useful for finding troublesome 3rd party apps, a common cause of problems IME, is to do a reboot then immediately go to dev options>running processes and see what background processes are running. if you have ten processes always running it can slow things down a lot. getting rid of all 3rd party background processes brought my 2012 Nexus 7 back from the dead, it would take 4-5 seconds to switch apps or pull up the keyboard before but became a slow but usable device after i got rid of all nonessential background processes for various apps. you should only see things you need always running in this screen, otherwise find a lighter alternative or look into greenify. web wrapper apps like hermit can replace a lot of heavy handed apps like amazon, facebook, IG, twitter, ebay, etc...
another common trouble maker is the accessibility option. when apps are granted accessibility it causes lag. ran into this myself last year on a nexus 5, pocketcasts was always super laggy on my N5 but smooth on every other device. as soon as i turned off accessibility for the one app with accessibility, everything went back to a silky smooth.
I use Hermit for FB and FB Messenger. It is great! It uses the webpage version and doesn't drain my battery.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
Check out Hermit. It can make a "tinfoil" style app for any webpage.
Use Hermit to make an app of the IMDB website. I use it a lot and it works fine for me.
The other alternative is Hermit but it's not open source, although it is more polished with more features than WebApps
If anyone actually wants to use Facebook without having the app installed, check this out:

It’s not exactly what OP asked for, but yes, it might be able to convert the website to an app. I see that the website does work when offline, so that aspect wouldn’t be a problem.
Thanks for paging! We get this question so often, it’s answered in the Google Play description, and as the first question in our FAQ. I’ll copy-paste from there, because it’s better-written than anything new I could type today, but feel free to ping me with questions, and I’ll be happy to answer. What are people using nowadays to create Progressive Web Apps (PWAs)? Still Hermit, or something else?

I know that feel, recently my 1st gen pixel died and I got stuck with an old Galaxy s3 (2012 too) until I buy a new one.
Looking here and there, I think the best thing to do is to go with the "lite" version of some apps, and change some of the others with similar, but always "light". Some examples:
As you can see they're all voted pretty well. A possible small boost for performance might be factory reset the phone first, sounds silly but it helps a lot sometimes.
Of course, if you're into modding, you can also replace the stock rom (system) with an optimized version, ususally "Go", but that requires some more efforts and sisnce it's an old phone there isn't much support nowadays, so just if you feel brave. Apps should help enough.
Hermit isn't just a Facebook-wrapper, it's an anything-wrapper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
There's no API yet so there's really nothing to attach an app to at the moment, but we're expecting people to create mobile apps for it in time. Honestly, though, it's already designed to work as a mobile website and you can just make an icon for it using hermit. There's also a recent ticket in the dev site for investigating setting Tildes up as a PWA.
I doubt there will ever be an 'official' mobile app. That isn't likely to change unless Tildes donations allow for a fleet of developers to be hired - the website itself gets all the dev effort, and it's going to need it with all the ideas we've been kicking around.
Someone did create a Tildes Extended which is kinda like a baby-RES (lets you tag users, do a couple other interesting things). I expect that'll co-evolve nicely with the site.
Hermit is excellent and it supports ad blocking in Instagram, which is fucking awesome!

there are other flight tracker apps & websites but they all have paywalls on some of their data, especially the real interesting stuff like tail numbers of private jets. ADSBX is the main one that makes all the data freely available. (which makes things like the twitter bot for Elon Musk's plane possible)
all of ADSBX's data is crowdsourced, if you have a RPi and $50-100 worth of parts you can feed data to them too. I got into it in winter 2020 when I was desperate for indoor, pandemic-safe hobbies.

May I suggest Hermit Lite Apps Browser?
Have you tried using an app like Hermit to run it inside of?
On my other device, I use Hermit - Lite Apps Browser. It makes apps seem like PWAs or native apps because all "lite apps" made through the app are isolated which means sites don't seem to share the same history unlike when we're using a regular browser. The status bar and such can be hidden for a frameless/full screen experience just like in native apps and PWAs. There are also other features. You can check those out in the app description. There's a free version and a premium unlocker. I think the unlocker's worth the price because it's so useful. Aside from customizations, it helped me save so much in terms of storage space.
Since the device is quite low on storage, I prefer saving files on the cloud. For easier access to my cloud storage accs which are also connected to my primary/main device, I use MiXplorer. You can either get it through the site for free or purchase it on PS to support the app development.
I also use Homescreen Notes for writing/reading short notes and reminders directly on my home screen. It really looks good on a black wallpaper, imo.
When I need to track the character, word, sentence, and paragraph count of my notes, I use Word Counter. It also has a frequency counter to show how many times I use certain words. I find it really useful because drafts as well as its previous versions are automatically saved even if I accidentally close or exit the app.
Since my other device's speaker is quite bad, boosting the volume of my phone is necessary. For this, I use Volume Booster GOODEV. It has ads (not that much), but if you have an ad-blocker you wouldn't even notice it. Too bad it doesn't have a premium version to get rid of the ads.
I use Look Up -Pop Up Dictionary Pro. I really love this app. The popup on copy is my favorite feature. I really miss it because it only works on versions like Android 8 and below. The main device I use no longer supports that feature. It has a free version if you'd like to try it. The popup will show meanings from various sources depending on your choice. You can see the supported sources in the app. I use Livio's Offline Dictionary.
I'm not sure if all the apps here are really lightweight, but as far as I remember they are. If you think the apps I mentioned do not suit your needs, I hope you find good ones. Good luck!
Hermit is your friend. It's perfect to make into a simple web app wrapper.

I used Hermit as a "lite" version of Twitter (& Reddit actually) & they cut out a load of the chaff & Crap that I've no interest in seeing. For years if I saw a promoted tweet from anyone I blocked them on sight. This worked for a while but even using Adguard won't seemingly put an end to the promo tweets from Crypto punting wank pheasants.

Edit: Yup, 100% will do what you want.
Yeah that's basically what I'm doing using Hermit and the mobile site
Try Hermit!! Link me: Hermit https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
Hermit lite, very good for fb too.
If it's web pages you visit regularly, try Hermit
Surprised no one has yet to mention Hermit • Lite Apps Browser
The screenshots haven't changed yet, but I like the description. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
Hermit can replace a lot of apps. It'll use much less data and space, and it gives a lot of customization.
This does a whole lot more than you're asking, but Hermit will let you set transparent icons for its apps.
You might be able to use Hermit to create a mini-app or whatever for the forums you frequent and I believe you're able to create an icon for your home screen as well so it for all intents and purposes may as well be an app. It's a pretty cool and convenient app.
~~Hopefully I'm doing this right.. Linkme : Hermit~~
Eh, here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
...now the bot replies
Here are a few replacement options, I've used and enjoy all of these:
Facebook Lite APK
If you want to use Lite versions of many popular apps, this app makes it very convenient:

That's a good idea, I might use Hermit to access youtube
i noticed a while back photos would have 100 wakelocks a day if i had photos that hadn't backed up yet. i have it set to only backup on wifi so i assume it was running the wakelock every 20 minutes or so to see if it could backup yet. i've been keeping photos frozen and defrost once a week or so and backup all my photos while keeping a lite webwrapper version of google photos for day to day use thanks to the great app hermit, really useful app to use in place of heavy handed bloated apps like amazon, ebay, and social media.
one i can add not already mentioned is Hermit
creates lite apps from any web service to avoid bloated battery drainers like FB, amazon, etc... Lot of advantages over a chrome bookmark. First 2 lite apps are free, paid if you want more than that.
Adblock
Notifications, even for FB.
No cookie sharing, so your thirsty social media stalking isn't in your browser search history.
Theming
permission control
immersive mode option
i use it in place of amazon, google photos (i keep the full app frozen and defrost it once a week or so to backup. even if i never open the app i see 75-100 wakelocks a day from it) Google+, and SlickDeals.
I created a hermit lite apps ( works like the chrome custom tabs but better) with the official google rio 2016 web page. Works great ! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
I use u/Chimbori app HERMIT and make a separate app for each site i visit.
i use hermit to create a webwrapper app for google photos access and keep the photos app frozen, opting to defrost it when i need to backup photos to the cloud. if i don't freeze photos i'll see 50 wakelocks a day from it, and it will some days hold over 150 in a day if i have new photos that haven't been backed up yet.
Yes.
personally i use hermit to create webwrapper or "lite" apps for apps that are too heavy handed. i have hermit lite apps for amazon, craigslist, google photos (i keep the app frozen and defrost every now and again just to backup my new photos) and google+.
offers lite apps for any web service, adblock, cookies aren't shared, no history in your browser, notifications, and a slide out tray with bookmarks. first 2 lite apps are free, paid if you want more than 2.
OG works fine for me. You could root and install xposed
You could use u/chimbori app Hermit but I dont know if its tailored towards YT ads but im sure he can say yes or no
Not sure if this will work but you tried..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
It creates a widget and maybe you can add it to sidebar.
if not, a work around is using a web wrapper app with chrome custom tabs. i personally use Hermit, but there are other great web wrappers. Hermit has adblock, themes, breaks cookie tracking, won't run background services, and notifications from any service with an RSS Feed. i haven't used anything with the notifications so i can't be of much help there but it's working.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
i use it for amazon, google photos (i keep the full app frozen and unfreeze it every now and again to backup photos, otherwise i see 100 wakelocks a day from photos) google+, and XDA forums. free to try for 2 sites/services, paid if you want 3 or more.
you can make a webwrapper app for AP with something like hermit
personally i like to use Greader to browse sites since it repackages the page into an OLED friendly black background with white text.
I use hermitcrab.. Love it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
And if you aren’t rooted, or don’t want to install an Xposed module, there’s always Hermit for a better tabs experience.
It fixes the most obvious problem in the Chrome implementation, which is that you eventually end up with too many tabs mucking up your Recents list (Hermit makes sure there’s only one tab for a single Lite App, and if you launch it again, it will simply bring that tab to the front, not create a new tab). Plus, other goodies such as Ad Blocking, which Chrome will likely not have in the near future.
google photos. keep the app disabled unless i want to backup, otherwise i see 100 wakelocks a day from it even if i never open it once. use a webwrapper app creator called hermit that works perfectly for my usage.
I use hermit to create a wrapper for amazon. keeps me logged in, launches through the amazon smile program (contributes to wounded warrior project when i purchase) and makes sure amazon is acting fucky in the background when it's not open. hermit has built in adblock, desktop/mobile options, permissions management, and is themable. first two wrappers are free, need to pay up if you want more.
i also use it for goggle photos. i keep the photos app installed but disabled, then enable it once a week or so when on the charger and let it backup. if i just leave it installed/enabled i see around 100 wakelocks a day from it. the hermit web wrapper lets me browse my photos library flawlessly without all the bullshit. would love if i could use a 3rd party gallery app to manage google photos but i don't know of one that exists.
I think Hermit is what you're looking for.
For me it's.
It allows you to create individual web apps to sites like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, cracked etc.
Very useful if you hate the battery draining Facebook app or don't use another service often
V7's extreme battery life thread on XDA is pretty comprehensive, covers everything from little stuff like account sync and scanning to heavy stuff like amplify and power nap. you can read through it and see what makes sense for you, it's not all or nothing. my setup is below, typically go 3 days per charge with around 4-5H SOT before i get to around 20% and charge. i never go below 20% to avoid wearing out the battery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884
i keep everything except gmail to sync manually
location services automated to turn on when i open certain apps like maps or waze
amplify to manage excessive wakelocks/alarms
power nap to block screen off wakelocks
greenify for more aggressive doze times
automated battery saver mode to turn on at night if i forget, 11PM-5AM weekdays, 12AM-8AM weekends
dark themes using RRO layers
black/dark themed apps
avoid nonessential apps with an always running background service
You could also try Hermit, very useful and cool for a variety of things.
Figured I'd throw that out there , there is also an app that uses mobile website wrappers so it is like having the app minus all the permissions. I myself did not care for all the far reaching permissions . The app is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
I'm a fan of Hermit which can make a wrapper + icon for any mobile site!
The downside is that now we have to wait around for the entire Internet to get around to doing this. :-/
Hermit works around it by extracting the proper theme color from the site’s favicon (which nearly all sites have today) and using it when launching a Lite App from the home screen icon.
After some searching, I found this app in the Play Store. It allows you to have "lite" versions of apps that promise to not run in the background, and you can set icons for them on the home screen. I now have a Facebook icon that just says "Messages" on it, and it takes me right there. Indeed, there's nothing running in the background.
Also would like to suggest Hermit it's kind of the same thing, a wrapper for any webpage. Works great and you can set icons and stuff.
And if you ever miss that home screen icon — or need one for other, more useful sites — Hermit can create one for each such app.
Try hermit, it lets you create apps from the web pages of sites you want. Even allows for notifications. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab
Not all Facebook wrappers mean you lose features. I use my own Hermit Crab wrapper app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab) and it supports uploading photos, videos as well as checking in to places. There's a separate toggle for you to control the permissions for each capability separately, and it does not run in the background, so there is no risk of background tracking.
Try Hermit Crab: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab It'll let you create Lite Apps for any site, including Facebook. Much more generic and you don't have to install one wrapper for each site.
It'll also put an icon directly on your home screen for each app.
Try Hermit Crab Lite App Creator. Same concept as Metal or Tinfoil, but for any web site. More options to control privacy settings and fine-grained permissions controls compared to either of those.

Take a look at Hermit, it let's you have each website in it's own little sandbox. I really like it.
Hermit.

You can pick IG as an app. It's the mobile web interface. It's nearly identical. No camera though.
Eh, it's definitely a click-baity title, but the app it's talking about is actually really good. I use it to replace a lot of stand-alone apps. It's basically a web brower "plus", so it can sandbox any mobile site you go to as well as handle notifications for certain sites. It's a decent replacement for Amazon, IMDB, LinkedIn, Yelp, various stores (Target, Home Depot, etc) and stuff like that. It's "ok" for replacing Facebook, but I like some of the other FB replacement apps better. Still, it's not a bad option.
LinkMe: Hermit
Edit: Just realized the LinkMe bot may not work on this sub. Here's a link to the play store.
Edit2: Huh. It worked after all. Ah well, leaving the link anyway.
All of those are likely to kill performance due to being memory hogs. I have no idea if you'll be able to use it with a remote, but if you can, I'd suggest you look at using the mobile versions of those websites through an app called Hermit.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chimbori.hermitcrab&hl=en
If you are on android you can use Hermit. It takes the mobile version of the website and puts it into a mobile app wrapper. It has some handy additions for theming as well. Very lightweight and allows you to get rid of tons of useless apps.
