You can hide folders in Android by adding what's called a ".nomedia"
file into the folder you want to hide. When you do that it hides the folder from your gallery app unless you specifically activate a "show hidden folders" option within your gallery app. Alternatively you can download gallery apps that have special privacy folders that can be protected by passwords. An example of an application that has that feature is F-Stop Gallery. It does cost money but its a pretty good gallery app with a nice selection of good features.
Edit. Spelling error. I hope this comment helps someone lol, I realise it's a meme but I figure good information is better shared!
I was in your situation some weeks ago. I tried some 10-20 gallery apps, and finally I'm using F-Stop is really fast and a beauty Material Design. Other interesting project is Impression.
Well, you see, the entire point of .nomedia
is to prevent it from being included in media scans by apps (e.g., your default gallery app)... hence why it's called "Private".
If the Private option didn't include .nomedia
, then it wouldn't be private. That folder—and all of the images and/or videos inside—could end up appearing in the Gallery and/or Google Photos app's library... which defeats the purpose of a "Private" save location.
Also, FWIW, I know the F-Stop Gallery app has an option in the settings to "Ignore .nomedia
"... so maybe what you really need is a different app that can be configured to ignore .nomedia
?
I really like F-Stop and have been using it for close to a year now. Very customizable and reasonably priced (imho) if you decide to spring for the Pro version.
Highly recommend.
F-Stop Gallery has a nested folders feature which sounds like what you're looking for. Although to use that feature you need the paid pro key (I've seen it on sale a few times recently).
QuickPic used to be nice. Good enough design. Good customisation. But it went to hell.
Anyway, F-Stop is almost similar. Provides nice UI, folder management, customisation
Have you tried the F-Stop gallery app? Best I know of. Works with a hierarchy of nested folders if you wish. Has drag'n'drop sorting WITHIN folders as well as between folders. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
I've been using F-Stop https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo . It has a slideshow feature, cycles through a full directory, can set the interval. There's a free version with IAP. I paid for it, works very well on a Chromebook.
F-stop Gallery is about as full featured as they come. You can view all photos in one gallery, or open individual folders, rate, tag, etc. Definitely my choice for photo app.
Have you tried fstop?
I was a die hard Quickpic user until they sold to Cheetah, and I've found fstop to quite comparable :)
I rename pictures because there are no tags. The search function is almost perfect if you're searching for 1 word
This app is somewhat similar to QuickPic, but I found it too complicated & a bit "heavy". It also has tags. I tried for half a day
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
If you are just interested in tagging, then you can try F-stop Media Gallery. It has tagging and lots of other features. The paid version can even write the tags to the metadata.
Heres their marketing blurb regarding tagging: You love to take pictures but you also like to edit and share them with friends. However, with 100s or even 1000s of photos scattered throughout your device, how can you find the right one quickly? F-Stop Media Gallery solves this problem by using professional features such as tags, ratings, albums, smart albums, favorites and places. F-Stop also includes integrated search functionality that provides instant results based on tag or filename and the ability to read and write (PRO) metadata such as tags and ratings directly to your images.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
i highly recommend you try F-Stop , it has a tagging feature just like what you mention, plus a bunch of other useful features (like being able to organize photos manually [aka drag them the way you want them to be], which is something i haven't seen many apps do other than samsung's old gallery)
if you have the money for it and think it's worth it, then i also recommend you get the pro app which gets a few more things, but by itself the standalone app is pretty reliable
You just have toll exclude folders in main storage, no subfolders. And: Normally many folders contain a ".nomedia" file, so there is no need to exclude every folder.
Alternative app for your needs: F-Stop Media Gallery https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
It used to be QuickPic before it got screwed over by Cheetah Mobile and ultimately removed from the Play Store. Right now, I'm using F-Stop, though that one is a paid app.
F-stop hasnt been updated since August 2021, so they avoid the latest rules. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
F-Stop has a "smart album" feature that would put all pictures from a particular location in their own album. That would at least make them easier to find later, or you might use automation to delete them at chosen intervals
F-stop will allow you to sort images by name. I usually sort mine by date, but you can see at the top where sorting by name is an option.
https://i.imgur.com/t3O7gl5.png
In addition to that, F-stop has a number of other settings to further customize how you would like your images displayed. Hope that helps.
Nice job! I know you’re focused on replicating Google Photos for now, but once you’re ready to add features it would be awesome to adopt an organization system similar to F-Stop:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en_US&gl=US
As a heavy photos user, it’s the only app that has ever given me the flexibility to make my library my own. Some key organizational features:
As I mentioned this is more future state, but if it ever gets to the point where these are built in to your service then consider me all in!
Unfortunately, there is no such setting
The issue with the native Gallery app is that it only has the sort modes "date created" and "date modified". Strangely, when you transfer files from a system to an Android phone, the date of creation in the phone becomes the date of transfer – stupid. So you cannot achieve this using the native Gallery app
I'd suggest getting an alternative gallery app, like F-Stop Gallery. It's light, has many sort modes including "date taken" which would be perfect for you, has hidden folders which are hidden the right way (.nomedia), fingerprint authentication, and lots of customization. Give it a try.
F-Stop is one of the best image viewers for Android. It doesn't zoom to individual pixels but it does zoom to 6400%. The developer is pretty good and so if you asked for the feature he might include it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
Seconded! It also searches metadata. I bought the pro version.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
Since you're already using an Android app, I would suggest trying F-Stop Gallery. It has much more of a "pc feel" and lots of settings and options.
That's exactly right. Like I said, you can still use Google Photos, but turn off the Back Up & Sync option and manually upload the photos you want... if you want to use it, of course. Before Google Photos came along, I always used a 3rd party photo gallery mostly because of organizational options. For the past few years, I've used F-Stop Gallery There's a paid version, as well, which I upgraded to years ago but I can't recall the differences between the free and paid versions. You can always back up your photos to your Drive folder or another cloud-based storage system like Dropbox.
If your Chromebook has Android app support, then the photo viewing/organizing app I love is F-Stop Gallery. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
I use it for exactly that: viewing photos taken on my camera to go through and rate 1-5 stars, then perform bulk organizing actions based on the stars, or other criteria. It's got a lot of features and is well worth the one-time fee for unlocking all the pro features.
The only catch is that right now, I have to first copy the photos to my Chromebook locally because F-Stop can't see the SD card/external storage (yet). I've been emailing the developer, because this works perfectly fine on my Android phone, and he even purchased a Chromebook to test this out. On Chrome 72 dev mode, which has SD card support, he told me it works fine to read from the SD card. I'm only on stable 71 right now, and don't want to switch into dev or beta myself, so I'm going to just wait for 72 stable on my Chromebook. Then, this app will be *perfect.*
I take photos right now with a microSD card in an SD adaptor because I used to just slip out the microSD card and put it into my Android tablet. This is exactly what I'll do with my Chromebook once I get 72 stable. In the mean time, I copy photos onto my Chromebook local storage, often by doing the first pass of culling via OTG card reader in F-Stop on my phone. (I take a lot of birds in burst mode, so it's easy even on a smaller screen to identify the several "empty" frames" or clearly out of focus shots.) I often have to do it in batches because I also have only 32GB storage locally, so I'm really looking forward to just inserting my microSD card in and avoiding all the prep work just to get to the point where I'm viewing my photos. But, the app is *that good* that I put up with this process. :)
F-Stop Gallery could be what you're looking for. When viewing an image, press it and hold a few seconds, then you'll see the layout switching, and you'll see thumbnails, tags, stars, just like this
Like the other person said, if you set Photos to back up every folder then it should do what you're asking for.
If not, I recommend F-Stop
I haven't done a deep dive into this photo gallery app, but I've tried it out a little and this might do what you want. Developer seems very responsive, too: F-Stop Gallery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
I use F-Stop. It's pretty light. No ads or spamware. Has additional paid features, but the free version works great for everyday usage.
I've used QuickPic for quite a while, but have been checking out the competition. Someone linked one I hadn't heard of a few weeks ago and I'm really liking it: F-Stop - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
F-Stop is actually a better alternative to Quickpic.
It's a literal clone of it and the best part is that it's not owned by CheetahMobile.
I've tried Piktures and a few others, for me F-Stop is the only gallery left that effectively replaced neutered QuickPic for me, it has all the features I cared about like performance, excluding/including folders, themes etc.
F-Stop is the only one that has enough features to match how I used QuickPic.
F-Stop (fastest full-featured gallery for thousands of pictures. I liked the ui of Piktures better but it wasn't fast enough for me).
MK Explorer (free, clean ui, no ads, file manager that supports copy/move and bookmarks).
Simple Notepad (self explanatory).
Brave (fast, adblocking, privacy-conscious browser).
Player FM (podcast player with many features).
aCalendar (it has more features than google calendar and i like it better than business calendar but not sure if there's nothing better).
Nova Launcher (i originally got it for an old phone cuz it was the lightest/fastest that still had lots of features, then i just stuck with it. Not sure if there's nothing better yet).
Joey (best reddit client and also ad-free. I know it's not related to stock apps but someone else added it to the list as well).
It's the last version that does not make any connections to Cheetah Mobile servers, and the apk package is resigned so that it won't update to newer versions that do.
Edit: Some clarification if the way I worded that left anyone confused, 'neutered' QuickPic is not the newest version of QuickPic with Cheetah Mobile stuff gutted, it's the final version before CM acquired it. Personally, I don't use this version anymore, as it's pretty old and doesn't work so well for me on later Android versions. I bought F-Stop Gallery with some extra Google Opinion Rewards credit I had and have been very happy with that. Piktures is also very nice if the price for F-Stop is too much. I'm also fond of Sony's Xperia Album (XDA link, don't use if you're not comfortable installing applications that aren't from the Google Play Store).
I'm finding <strong>f-stop</strong> is a suitable replacement right now.
Have you tried F-stop? I replaced Quickpic with it and I'm pretty happy.
After install 20+ gallery apps months ago and always try the news posted here, IMHO currently the best gallery app is F-Stop.
Currently, F-Stop.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
F-Stop is the only gallery app that ever came close to Quickpic for me: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
The $5 "Pro" app is just an unlocker ― the actual gallery app itself was last updated 26 April 2017.
the best QuickPic replacement I managed to find is f.stop https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
Best gallery app imo is F-Stop
Piktures is fine, but I prefer F-Stop Gallery.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
F-Stop. Works with nested folders. Has drag-and-drop sorting between and within folders. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
Linkme: f-stop
Edit : The bot linked the pro key which isn't entirety necessary at all for most people.
Here's Google play link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo

Frequently goes on sale.
Check out F-Stop Gallery
F-Stop does just that after you unlock it
I agree, maybe the best gallery in this moment.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
Checkout paid app.with good features https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo or any gallery app from that publisher.
F-Stop sounds a lot like what you're looking for.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo Go to Settings - Main - Included Folders & pick one or more top-level folders. Then when using the app, Use the Nested Folders view.
F-Stop photo gallery app, best one imo
Have you tried F-Stop at all? I've been using it a while and curious how it might compare to Simple Gallery.
I found a number of apps named F-Stop. Is it this F-Stop?
Not sure about this, but give F-Stop a try.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
Have you tried this one f-stop ?
Have you tried F-Stop Gallery? It took me some time to get adjusted, but it's been great ever since.
Check out F Stop it was pretty decent last time I tried it.
F-Stop seems to have filled my QuickPic usage https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
I'm using F-Stop
I'm sure there are more but I know f-stop does. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
Use Threema for privacy and security.
hi shoddy.
I know these android apps that support tags:
If you want to implement a gallery app of your own, APhotoManager has it-s own implementation of ExifInterface that is compatible with google android ExifInterface that can also handle exif-tags.
> Prob we can collaborate.
what do you mean by collaborate ?
nobody mentioned f-stop. it is the best gallery app functionality wise. but UI and UX wise, it has to be simple gallery photo album by simplemobiletools.
and you can't go wrong with firefox also a little bit of love for boostforreddit
It's from the original play store link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
is it the casual app at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo or a different link?
Try F-Stop.
Both are a good choice, a greeting.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobiletools.gallery
Try F stop
Sorry, I went to bed last night. I use the pro version of F-Stop Gallery.
F-Stop is great so far (it can also view raws).
F-Stop does image tagging really well.
Picasa is no longer supported by Google. Have you tried Google Photos https://photos.google.com/ as an alternative?
Google Photos doesn't manage files local to your Chromebook, it wants you to upload everything and uses your Drive quota if you save in original quality, otherwise there is no cost or limit to photos uploaded in what they call "High Quality."
For offline photo management you may find something Android in the Play Store. 11 months ago /u/sarah11918 suggested F-stop
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
See more discussion at this thread

Not sure if this will help. I haven't tried it myself.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo
f-stop gallery has a "protected" folder feature (for hidden and encrypted images/folders).
Some of my recommendations:
As far as Reddit apps go, all I will say is to please use something other than the official app. Boost, Slide, Sync, Relay, Reddit is Fun, and Joey are all excellent and which one(s) you should use is something you should decide for yourself.
Fstop , try. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo I have switched to paid one now.
Yep, saw the latest update and like the black theme. Amoled friendly.
F-Stop media gallery supports XPKeyword Exif tag.
Been using F-Stop Gallery for a few months and would recommend it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
In my mind, I think they were referring to carrier branded devices. <strong>F-Stop Media Gallery</strong> - Free - Rating: 85/100 - Search for 'Relay' on the <strong>Play Store</strong>. ------. ^Source ^Code ^| ^Feedback/Bug ^report.
Has anyone tried F-Stop?
F-stop. I even bought the pro version I liked it so much. It even searches EXIF metadata.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fstop.photo&hl=en
+1, VLC meh, is better MX Player. And about QuickPic, use the modified xda (4.5.2) version or use another one like F-Spot.
