It's community sourced. It's worked really well for me. Every once in a while if one gets through, I just mark it as a bad number for everyone else.
Also, 10-15 a day is crazy. :(

Can't speak for hiya, but I've been using Should I answer for a while now and it's worked better for me than Mr. Number ever did, no idea if it's available on ios though. I can't see there being much difference between apps though, they will all pull from crowdsourced online databases, they just use different ones.

Not sure if this will be quite what you're looking for, but I have been using Should I Answer? as kind of a compliment to my main dialer (on stock OnePlus 3t) for a few months. It's pretty great for identifying and blocking spam and unwanted calls.
Probably not what most people think of when looking for a dialer replacement, but hopefully this will be useful to somebody.

I use Should I Answer? -- it has a database of spam/negative numbers and also allows you to add numbers to the list (provided you leave anonymous feedback about the number). It also can block unwanted text messages as well. It can perform 'answer after one ring and hangup' -- it does it fairly quickly and I rarely receive an actual ring.

Is it to be trusted, being that it wants to "make and manage phone calls"? Is it going to take over the standard phone answering functionality? As I'd rather it didn't start messing with the system's default UI for making/receiving calls etc. But I understand if they'd be no reasonable way to intercept the standard call request/UI and display a toast message and/or block the call.

The best I can think of is Dois-je répondre which displays a popup on each call stating if the caller is trusted by the community or not. You can add a set of custom rules (like "block all incoming negatively evaluated calls"), I find it very handy!
You could use an app like Should I Answer? to block specified numbers. It comes very highly recommended.
Or you could use Group Ringtone Lite to set a silent ringtone for those who aren't contacts.

I use the "Should I Answer" app. It uses crowd-sourcing to block any known nuisance calls. It works on about half the spam calls I get (so many calls these days use single-use spoofed numbers). Your phone doesn't even ring (it will light up to show the blocked call).
The next step (if you have an Android phone) is to get Should I Answer, which flags known scammer phone numbers and allows you to block them entirely from calling again.
I use "Should I Answer" as a call blocker. They seem pretty good in terms of privacy. Interface takes a little getting used to though.
I have a handy call blocker on my phone that alerts me if unknown numbers or numbers not in my list try to call me, and they have a community that rates numbers so I know which numbers are scams and which can be legitimate.

Also, make a rule for yourself: if there is no voicemail left, it does not deserve your call back. Nparents and FMs usually call and leave no voicemails thinking you'll call back. However, if it's something important such as a potential employer, they [should] always leave voicemails identifying who they are and why they are calling. If there is a voicemail and it is simply "hey its [Nmom/Ndad/Naunt/Ncousin], call me back" and/or "call me back," then that does not deserve your call back. It's rude.
The first number I blocked on my blocker was my Nmom and, according to the app, she calls me once a fortnight. There's a feature where if a blocked number calls, it can pop up telling you they called or not. I was getting angry knowing Nmom was trying to call me so I disabled that feature.
The app can automatically block Unknown numbers so you never even see it ring.
Now, just trying to find an app or a feature that lets me play the "DOO DOOO DOOO this number is not in service" message when Nmom gets to my voicemail. That's gonna be bomb.

"Should I Answer" if on Android. No root required. They have a good shitlist filter. You have to configure permissions and go into Settings in the app before it'll start blocking spam. It requires another app as a dependency for SMS spam filtering. I believe it uses either OKcaller or the WhoCallsMe servers for most lists. No adware but they do have a "Donation" tab on the app (consider donating!).
I use Should I Answer on android, they also have an iOS app but that gets poor reviews.
Its all done by user feedback, and will just say if people have said its good or bad, and contacts bypass the app. Also gives you an easy way to block a number

For Android users, there's Should I Answer? for example. Don't know if it works well in the US, but it did wonders for me in Poland. There are also similar apps but this one's not intrusive at least and doesn't seem to be sharing information on your calls unless you submit a rating for a number.

I do answer anything where I'm not sure who is calling, but if I don't like the sound of the call within 10 seconds I just hang up without saying anything.
Should I Answer? is purely community/crowd-sourced reports. You rate phone numbers and that gets shared with the community.
TrueCaller takes contacts from all their users to create its own database. Lots of privacy concerns that way.

Go to the in-app settings menu > Block incoming calls from... > Unknown numbers. Be sure to give the app the permissions it needs tho. Otherwise it won't work.
I use the Should I Answer app to block these types of calls. It's probably the most useful app I've ever used. Highly recommended.

Blocks negatively reviewed numbers. Reviews are crowd-sourced by users. You can block any number or send it to voicemail. Well-made app.

Install Should I Answer?. It's really great. It essentially uses crowd-sourcing to categorize phone numbers (e.g., telemarketing, scam, etc.) and you can set it up to automatically silence any incoming calls that have a negative community rating, ones without any rating, from unknown or blocked/private numbers, or from any number not in your address book. You can also enable "voicemail protection," which will pick-up and hang-up (instead of just silencing the ringer) so that the call doesn't go to voicemail.
If any unrated/neutral calls from telemarketing or whatever get through, you can rate the number and identify the category to help others.
But I'd say that at least 75% of the spam and telemarketing calls I've got were already rated and in the SIA database.
This is horrible advice. Just don't answer, otherwise you are letting them know it's an active line with a real person at the other end.
Use an app like Should I Answer which tells you if the call is a telemarketer before you even answer the line.
For some reason Mr Number started letting blocked numbers through after I upgraded to Lollipop and encrypted my 'phone (not sure if either were relevant or not).
I've been using Should I Answer since. That not only blocks chosen numbers but it also checks incoming numbers not in contacts against a database of known scammers and other dodgy operators so it can flag up what's known about incoming calls.
Should I Answer? and Truecaller are others ones I thought about. Should I Answer? seems nice.
I use Should I Answer? for android for exactly that. I was getting calls 5-10 times a DAY so now I reject all calls not in my contacts. Sooo much better that way.
Have you tried the Should I Answer app it has a option to auto ignore calls from numbers not saved in your address book. It's more effective than manually blocking every new number since they can just spoof a new number any time.

Anyone with an Android phone should use Should I Answer? to screen calls and help add scam numbers to the database. It's way better than fishy old Truecaller.
It feels a little slimy to have to grant access to your contacts to get this to work properly but I downloaded the Should I Answer? app for Android and it's been great.
I still get some junk calls but I've been getting a lot fewer, and I think it's in large part to the app making it easy to know which calls to just ignore.

I had the same problem start just this year. I give my number out to absolutely no one, even legitimate companies I do business with (power company, bank etc) get my Google Voice number so it was really frustrating for awhile. I wound up having to install an app to block them, seems to work pretty well: Should I Answer
What kind of phone do you own? Some skins let you block unknown/obvious scam numbers if you use the OEM dialing app. Otherwise you can use Should I Answer? to monitor calls.
Unless you expect a lot of calls from random people every day, you should always look up numbers online before answering them or calling them back. Some apps (like the one linked above) can do this automatically. And be diligent in blocking spam calls. I almost never answer phone calls that I don't know because I don't want my number spoofed.
sync.me has done some sketchy shit in the past. I would recommend Should I Answer instead. I have problems with spam calls too and SIA does a great job of stopping, or at least notifying me, of suspected telemarketer/spam calls.

Sul telefono attuale (Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge) è inclusa di default quindi non saprei dirti che provider utilizza.
Però puoi usare "Dovrei rispondere?" (Android) che utilizzo su un altro telefono e fa esattamente la stessa cosa. Ad ogni telefonata in arrivo da numeri non presenti nella tua rubrica consulta un suo database e ti notifica se il numero è stato segnalato come spammer, truffa o altro. A questo punto puoi decidere se rispondere comunque, riagganciare, bloccare il numero. Se rispondi poi ti chiede di lasciare un feedback sul numero di telefono da cui hai ricevuto la chiamata.
Alcune note:
- il database che consulta è online, quindi vuol dire che i numeri di telefono che ti chiamano vengono condivisi in rete con i server dell'azienda;
- il database è collaborativo, nel senso che si basa sui feedback degli utenti. Quindi anche te, a fronte di una chiamata da numero non in rubrica, puoi fornire giudizi (era pubblicità, call center, ecc.)
- L'applicazione è scritta in un italiano discutibile, non spaventarti.
I started using this app a few months ago, it's not perfect but it's the best I've found so far.
It has a community generated list of bad numbers, so once somebody gets called and "downvotes" it, that negative rating will show up on everybody else's app. You can auto decline calls from numbers with negative ratings too.

Should I Answer? may help? It's more designed to let you know if the number calling you has been reported as a scammer etc, but for me it's been reporting where a number is from. The Play Store screenshots don't show it showing an incoming call's city, but it'd be worth a go to see if it works in your country.
+1 for Should I Answer, it definatley works and blocks both private and unknown numbers. Enable all the blocks and you only get calls from the contacts in your phone book.
The only downside is that you have to make it the default phone app and it looks a bit clunky and doesn't have the normal phone app features.

Should I Answer? has an option to exempt numbers in your address book from being filtered. And since I have maintained a habit of adding phone numbers for everybody who I call and who has called me over the years, I've never had a problem.
Get an app that filters them out. I use Should I Answer? and just have it set to block all numbers that aren't in my address book. They can still leave a voicemail, but my phone doesn't ring.
I got 15-20 calls a day easily because at one point I was in a similar situation. Once they have your number, they never let it go and there is no chance their actually adding you to a DNC list.
It was horrible, my ringtone instinctively made me angry until I got "Should I answer?". It's an app that has a reigstry of these numbers based on personal reviews of other app users. I kid you not, this app has changed my life

I think this sent the calls to voicemail. I don't remember. I didn't want to block all non-contact numbers, so updating the rating of numbers got old really fast...

It takes community reviews of the number calling you and can automatically block it if it has a bad review. Can also block calls based on criteria you set, like if it matches your first 6 digits, or just even isn't in your contacts. Yeah, I have been experiencing it for a couple years. It seems like it's simmered down a bit; these days, I might get 2 or 3 calls one day, and then nothing for the rest of the week, but it's sporadic, so some weeks are worse.
I was using pattern-based call blocking, since most of the numbers were similar, but awhile back I investigated apps that can help with this and settled on Should I Answer play store appstore, because of it's good privacy policy.
Well you can't do that with a standard feature. I use this app from the Play store, although I'm sure there are many variants out there that would do the same. It just happened to be the first one I tried and it works well enough.

I hardly ever get robocalls, and almost never get telemarketers/debt-collector calls. Today I went to half a dozen insurance company web sites to get quotes for covering my new car. Despite the assurances made by three of these sites that they never sell/distribute my info, I started getting spam calls at the rate of one an hour.
Not super happy about it. I've been using Should I Answer?, but I find the interface clunky and annoying. If anyone has a recommendation for a better app, I'd love to hear it.

Should I Answer is a free spam blocker give it a try. It has a option to auto block numbers not saved in your address book. I used to get a lot of spam too but now it's only like once every 2 months and those calls get sent to voice mail without my phone ever making a sound.
You should probably get a call blocker app that has community driven block lists. If you use Android: This is what I use. EDIT: For Iphone
No easy fix unfortunately. Personally, I started by blocking all numbers with my area code since I never get legit calls that start that way anyway. Then I started getting them from all sorts of area codes..so now I use an app called 'Should I answer?' to block every call not in my contact list. It sucks when I'm expecting a call from a number not in my list, but it's better than seeing my phone get annoying phone calls all day.

I've not had any increase in dropped calls, so I don't know what that's about. I suppose it's possible if it was a number of years ago that they're talking about because Google bought the company behind GV (Grand Central I think it was called) and Google just kind of let it languish for several years, so there might have been problems during that era. Google announced the repurposing of Hangouts a couple years ago, though, so they're obviously no longer ignoring it. I certainly haven't had any significant issues with dropped calls or quality. Occasionally I do have an issue where GV fails to get an outgoing call set up with my GV#, but most of the time it works fine when I tell it to try again.
You're right about the previous owners thing, but I've changed numbers a few times now and only had that happen on one of them. It didn't last very long, either. Nowadays my problem is more with the rampant Robodialer calls everybody seems to be experiencing. I use a social call blocker app (Should I Answer) to deal with it for now, even though it's not an ideal solution.
As far as being unnecessary, I guess that is up to the user. I find not being tied to one device extremely useful. I occasionally forget my phone at home and keep an emergency phone on pay-go provider Tello in my car. They both have GV set up so nobody knows I'm not on my normal phone. My normal phone is on TMobile while Tello is on Sprint so I have an alternate in case of coverage issues (I also carry a FreedomPop SIM on AT&T just in case those fail, but with only 200MB free data it's a last resort). I can text from my PC with a real keyboard, I can take calls on my tablet if it's in front of me and my phone's charging, etc. etc. GV just makes things much more flexible.

Telemarketing calls are likely initiated by robots so you'd be wasting your time.

You could also use a firewall to block Internet access on your own. Most call filtering apps need Internet access only for serving ads or anonymous data collection for their spam database. Neither of which are needed for filtering calls.

Since the days of Stock Android, I have been using a Play Store app called Should I Answer? (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mistergroup.muzutozvednout&hl=en).
It has an option to block hidden numbers, and it blocks numbers that have been negatively rated by the community.
I've been using Should I Answer for a while, as they claim NOT to do this. Is it true that it really does? Could OP test against that too?

The best app I've found to set up blocking is Should I Answer. It's a community based blocker, so you can block any negatively rated numbers, or set up your own blocks to stop unknown/private calls, etc.
I have had nothing but problems with Hiya since they went to version 7. I tied Mr. Number for a while but it also had a few quirks. I have been using the "Should I Answer?"app and so far it filters calls properly.

attempted OpenDNS. Doesn't like my system so skipping that. uBlock Origin and the DNS is set for OpenDNS at least and stuff is still resolving so I'll leave it as is. As for WTS scammers. I put Should I Answer? On his phone so those calls wont see the light of day.

I kept getting the same annoying pre-recorded spam call from different phone numbers each day so I installed "should I answer" it has a feature to auto block all unknow phone numbers. It doesn't solve the underling problem but it works for me.

I use an android app called Should I Answer. If the number is rated poorly it just ignores the number for me. I think it may have actually prompted whoever was calling me to remove my number from their database as I receive far less spam calls now.
If a similar app is necessary, I'd suggest Should I Answer?, as it allows you to use it offline. Just make sure you visit the settings section of the app and customize it to your will :)

Truecaller sells you to the Chinese. Don't use apps that sell you to the Chinese.

Centrais de telemarketing, provavelmente robos. Você responde e ele te joga pra algum atendente. Tem época que é mesmo uma desgraça.
Se é no celular (Android) é só instalar qualquer aplicativo como o Devo Atender? (Should I Answer?) e sair bloqueando tudo. Tem celular que já tem função de bloqueio, mas eu ainda prefiro os aplicativos já que os dados são compartilhados com quem tiver o aplicativo e as pessoas podem deixar comentários informando sobre quem está querendo encher o seu saco.
No fixo só comprando um telefone que já tenha a função de bloqueio de chamadas embutido (call block) ou comprando um daqueles bloqueadores que são conectados entre a linha e o telefone.
Em SP no site do Procon você pode cadastrar seus números de telefone pra tentar coibir esse pessoal e ai se alguém te ligar você pode abrir uma reclamação no site, só precisa lembrar de anotar dados como: horário da ligação, nome da empresa, nome do atendente, etc. que boa parte dos campos são obrigatórios.

In passato ho usato questo modulo scaricabile anche in docx, l'ho compilato e l'ho inviato alla mail riportata sul sito dell'AGCOM che hai condiviso inserendo il numero di telefono.
Se non compare alcuna mail, compilo questo modulo e lo invio all'indirizzo riportato sul modulo in alto a destra.
Drasticamente ridotto la quantità di telefonate a fine marketing, e quelle "nuove" vengono bloccate automaticamente dall'app "Dovrei rispondere?" se ha un punteggio negativo, per poi ripetere il processo sopra indicato. Laborioso ma efficace.

On Android: Should I Answer?, Hiya, and RoboKiller (search it out on the Play Store. In Beta) can take on spam calls and effectively put an end to them.
On iOS Hiya and RoboKiller do the same.
To configure them:
1) Should I Answer? -> Settings Tab
Blocking - Community DB sensitivity
All the way to the left on High
Block INCOMING Calls from
local negative rated numbers
community negative rated numbers
hidden numbers
foreign numbers (unless you get foreign calls!)
Set the same for OUTGOING Calls to.
Under Advanced, turn on Download reviews automatically. Turn off, send anonymous stats about incoming calls. It can cause an issue on some phones.
2) Hiya -> Gear icon in the bottom right -> Call settings
Set Scam and Fraud, Suspected spam, and calls from private numbers to Block (send to voicemail)
3) RoboKiller
Follow the setup process. It is free on Android for now, but is $20 per year otherwise. The cost is very worth it. They forward your calls through their system through conditional call forwarding. If the call looks like spam via source or audio fingerprint, they send it to answer bots. Otherwise, it gets sent to your phone. Setup answerbots, but only use "Just Silence". That way suspected spam calls get to hear silence on the other end. It is a set it and forget it way of using RoboKiller.
Stay away from Truecaller. It is owned by the Chinese.
I don't believe I'm using it as strictly as you can set it, but I've been fairly happy with Should I Answer.

Ce qui est compliqué dans la lutte des spams c'est qu'il utilisent des logiciels pour usurper des numéros, changer le numéro de téléphone à la volée et bien souvent ces spams viennent de pays de l'est pour des entreprises françaises...

At most, they'll sell your information to shady advertisers and will continue to call and try to dupe you. It's really no different from your email address being sold as part of an email list after a data breach. There's little you can do to stop it, but there's little the scammers or hackers can do with that information as well, except send you a lot of Viagra ads.
They can't do much beyond that, since they have next to no resources. They're just looking to make a quick buck from gullible people.
Install Should I Answer? on your Android phone to weed out scam calls. Unfortunately, there's no such scam call guard app for iOS or other platforms. If they called you via landline, once again, there's little you can do. But you can talk to your carrier or home phone provider about this scam. They should be able to blacklist the number, especially since the scammers are pretending to be government officials.

o aplicativo Devo Atender bloqueia automaticamente as ligações de números que você bloquear e mais: existem estatísticas compartilhadas de avaliação dos números pelos próprios usuários, então se muitos (você pode configurar a partir de quanto) usuários já avaliaram negativamente um número, o app bloqueia a ligação e te diz o porquê (avaliações do número. outro número que me ligou, mas bloqueado).

This one is more niche, but you can use it to track your overall mood for the day, and will give you stats and insight on patterns in your life and how they affect your overall mood. It can motivate you to change your behavior to improve your quality of life (did for me, anyway!)

I use Should I Answer? and have it programmed to block all calls from my area code +3 like this you can also have it whitelist any number in your contact list.
It will notify you that it blocked a call and that number will show up in call history
"Should I Answer" does this. Block calls not in my contacts. It also blocks calls based on how the community has rated them (although that doesn't really matter if you just block everyone not in your contacts). It works beautifully. I had a lot of problems with Hiya actually coming up while my phone (Android) was ringing, but this one always does. I can't give any comment on the Apple version.

Please don't call scam numbers back with your real number. They'll just end up spoofing it for scams. Call these numbers back with a burner number. You won't have much luck removing yourself from their lists. But maybe you can troll the hell out of them to make yourself feel better. :)

Should I Answer is an app I use for that purpose. It can block hidden numbers and also show a rating for numbers that phone you, so you can decide whether to answer it or not.
You can also have negative rated numbers be blocked from ringing you too.

I didn't think of using tasker for this, instead I used Should I Answer.
I'm not as familiar with Tasker, but you shouldn't need the second '*'.
I have been using the "should I answer" app for about a year now. There is a option to auto silence all calls from numbers not saved in your address book, sure I missed a few calls from people with new numbers, and some times I still get spam voice mail but I think it's a small price to pay if I don't wake up at 7 AM to a fog horn telling me I need to pay for my free cruise. Also Because I never mistakenly answer a spam call I think I now receive them less often.
