Disa is a great lightweight replacement. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it runs much faster and doesn't drain your battery!

What about something like Disa? I mean for an all-in-one solution ... but it does handle Facebook messaging quite well. No chat heads...
I switched to Disa a while ago. Disa is unified SMS/MMS, WhatsApp, and FB Messenger. My only complaint with it is the lack of dark theme.
I've been using Disa for chat. It also lets you integrate your SMS messages if you want, and Whatsapp, as well. Lets you merge conversations between services.
It's slightly buggy still (I sometimes get a notification that I can't close without restarting the phone), but nothing major. It's still in pretty early development, but I've got high hopes for it.

I use Disa (Play Store). It let's you use Messenger, Whatsapp and Text (probably more 3rd party addons.) Takes way less space and battery.
Try Disa, It's been working very well for me. It is missing some features that I'm used to like being able to quick reply and such but it is very competent! You can even change the notification light, sound and vibration pattern on a per-person and per-method basis.
I actually use Disa. It integrates fb messaging, whatsapp, and SMS into one app. If you're talking to someone and you have them on more than one of those accounts, you can seamlessly switch between services within the same conversation, and it can also merge your history across multiple services with the same person as one conversation. It's API is open, so people are working on plugins for other communication services like Kik, but it's a relatively small community so progress is pretty slow on that front.
Disa has a Facebook chat plugin that works quite well. It also can be used for SMS and has other plugins to keep everything in one app, if you are so inclined.
Replace whatsapp with Disa; that's a good start.
Edit: Why the down votes? Disa combines whatsapp and Facebook messenger and uses less battery. Its also much better looking (IMO).
Nice! Ok... so... in that case you're not going to find an alternative that includes as many features as Messenger does. So it's really going to be a trade off for you and you're gonna have to find what you like best.
Your best bet is Disa, it's the most featured messaging app and rolls most services including text into one. You can look at others like Trillian, IMO, IM+, etc as well.

It has a nice ui and is pretty lightweight.
I'm using Disa, it has a Facebook messenger plugin as well as WhatsApp and normal SMS. And you can merge 2 or more together to have seamless convos across platforms, which I find very useful :D
Also that meant I could uninstall Facebook messenger and save on the battery drain that comes with.

That's kind of outside the scope of Swipe. Swipe is just a wrapper for the mobile Facebook site. A fancy wrapper with some nice features and slight usability edits, but a wrapper nonetheless.
I haven't found a decent alternative for Messenger with chat heads, but if you're willing to forgo them both Disa and Messenger Lite are very good alternatives.
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but can someone help me to understand, if I use Disa to combine all my SMS and Messaging apps including WhatsApp, will I still get the end-toend encryption benefits.

Disa: Since I use Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and SMS, having all three services in one smooth and material app is a dream. It's fast, beautiful and it has all the options I need.
Swiftkey: Writing both in italian and english this is the only keyboard that allows me to type in both languages at the same time and it gets the predictions all the times, without needing to switch keyboard. The new theme is also pretty cool (finally)

I also got rid of the Facebook app for Tinfoil. As for messenger, I went with Disa... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.disa ..works very well, isn't an enormous battery drain, and the UI is just pleasant. Only thing I can't do I believe is send stickers (just the keyboard isn't available for it...), receiving them is fine, everything else works great.

On Android, I use the mobile site for Facebook, and Disa instead of messenger. Some friends use messenger for everything, and disa is nice because I get a notification if someone messages me directly. I can reply as well. I've never installed messenger on this phone, and never will. ��
Not the first time this has happened.
About 2 years ago, right after I got my Nexus 6, I noticed that the battery life was horrendous, and the phone was hot all the time. I fought with it for a day or two before finally realizing that FB Messenger was the culprit. I did some searching online, and discovered that a lot of other people were having the same problem. I uninstalled Messenger and the problem went away.
I use Disa now, which does a great job of handling FB instant messages. It also has plugins for other IM services, though I've never used any of them.
Disa is a pretty lightweight messaging tool that supports FB messages without the bloat. Extremely reliable, been using it over a year now.

If you're looking for an app to replace Messenger I've found that Disa works great. Doesn't have any of the stickers or GIFs or other stuff like that but definitely doesn't drain as much battery as Messenger does.

If it is something wrong with the default messaging application, you could always install a third party one such as Disa.
I'm on 4.1.2. I use Disa for Facebook messages. It is also a SMS app but I don't use it for that. When I get a Facebook message, it gives me a notification on my computer just like every other app and then another one that lets me reply like a SMS app. I remember in a previous version of the Android app, I disabled text messaging which was on the top of the app list and enabled Disa to fix the problem.
I've seen a lot of discussion around alternate messaging clients. I've been using Disa, it's a messaging app that ties all your services together (sms, facebook, whatsapp, etc). It's still in beta, but I haven't had any issues, and it's streets ahead of the facebook messenger app.

You can also go disable apps from keeping your system awake with the privacy guard. I use it on my VS980 for Facebook, Google Now and Play Services and it makes a huge difference.

I use tinfoil for facebook. Now I know you're gonna bark at me for saying "there's no notifications!" But there is a work around. For messaging, you could use Disa Beta instead of the official messenger app if you want to save even more battery. It takes a bit of setup, but we'd do anything for battery life, right?

Google Maps: Now back to my default map and navigation program after adding the "Wifi only" option. HERE! Maps (or whatever its stupid new name) was consistently shitting out on my Nexus 6P after I was up over 6GB of downloaded maps, so this was a welcomed update to Google Maps.
Google Photos: I want ease-of-use and Google Photos gives it to me. I don't need Photoshop-level edits...I just want to take a picture on my phone, Google Photos automatically backs it up to the cloud, and perform basic edits on my PC. It does the same thing from my laptop with my SLR photos, so...no brainier here. The search feature absolutely makes this a killer photo app.
Google News: I am borg. I've been assimilated by Google apps. I've tried all the news clients--ALL OF THEM--and for someone who just wants to read the news and get important breaking news alerts, this meets my two basic needs. I customize it on the web, and it updates on my phone.
FAKE EDIT: Any old school Android fanboys here will notice that the APK for Google News is "genie.geniewidget." Remember those days?

I use both Moonreader and Play books, I have the Moonreader app on my home screen, using Nova I set a swipe up gesture on the Moonreader icon to open Play Books.
