It's funny you say that, because recently I've noticed what are basically glorified and/or simplified text adventure games have been becoming a hit on mobile, stuff like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google&hl=en_GB
and more recently this:
while it's not exactly the same, I'd say there's a lot of similarities, maybe you can have a crack at one of these style games and find the passion again?
Have you checked out Lifeline yet? The downside is that it's a little short and time based but otherwise a good game.

There's a text based game called Lifeline that actually let's you play from the notification shade. Check it out.

It's on sale currently, so i decided to try it out. It's a bit different than most games i play on my phone and i really enjoy it
This is the link for the game on the Play Store, taken from an AndroidPolice article, and it doesn't seem to work either.
Strange.
You may try Lifeline. It is a pretty good game with a story and just tapping is enough. You become attached to the main character and it does not need constant checking of phone.

Edit: I know it's not free but it's good.
I played Lifeline last week. This game is available for Android and iOS. It's a text-based adventure game. The protagonist is alone in a foreign environment with unknown dangers. and the only person who's apprently receiving his/her messages is you. The choices you make will decide whether the protagonist survives or dies. The messages from the protagonist appear in real time.
I finished it in only 3 days, but had loads of fun. The narrative is compelling and gets you hooked.
Haven't played many, but Lifeline is solid
Ai Dungeon for more freeform stuff.
I liked the Silent Night games. There's 7 of them, the linked one is the first. The concept is a text based adventure, but each action takes some real time. So if you, say, tell the character to move someplace, it'll take about 4 hours before you can continue. There are also multiple options and outcomes.
Another game I really liked was Monument Valley. The concept is neat, but after finishing the game, there's not much more to it.
Both are paid games, BTW.
You may not draw them, but you do pick them and a lot of them are quite enjoyable. I imagine when you create your games you'll be hiring an artist, too - Unless your games are text based like google play's Lifeline
Best wishes on your video game dream. :)
Lifeline is good, not a classic CYOA but you direct an astronaut who texts you throughout the day with decisions for you to make. Also the Delight Games are surprisingly engaging.

This looks kinda interesting. You mean this one here, don't you? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google&hl=de
Have you played the second one, too? Can I play it without a smart watch?
Man From Earth is awesome.
There's a really good Android game called Lifeline (guessing its on iPhone too) which is very Martian-like... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google&hl=en
Lifeline is on sale for $0.99. It's about an astronaut who's stranded in space who you communicate with in real time. That means when the main character is doing something, you have to wait until they're done to continue. Really adds to the immersion.
It's all text based, but the choices, like Telltale games, do affect the story. It's written by the dude who wrote The Wolf Among Us, so you know it's legit. You get really attached.
For a new game, check out Lifeline on iOS or Android. It's a few bucks on either app store.
It's different from traditional text adventure. You don't control a character, but you interact with an NPC and help him/her make choices. I thought it was a very fun and innovative game for the platform. The game is real time, so you'll play it for about 3 days by getting notifications on your phone when your buddy "texts" you asking for help.
This one. (it's actually incredibly popular in r/AndroidGaming these days)
I was thinking single player, at least initially. Multiplayer would introduce quite a few complications... though I don't think it would be too hard to bolt on support for it later, as long as the system's architecture is sane.
Thanks for that resource! I've never heard of a Z-machine before... I'll definitely look into it. It would almost be like knocking two birds out with one stone if I could implement or use one.
I wish I was sleeping right now! But my dumb ass fell asleep too early and woke up at 10pm! So I'm binge watching Good Mythical Morning and browsing Reddit instead.
I've also been playing this pretty nifty game all day as it pops up on my tablet.
As far as the weekend goes... My in-laws invited us over to sit out on their upper deck and watch the fireworks, which sounds very relaxing and lovely. But also our friend invited us out to his home in the country to light off fireworks and BBQ. Bonus, they have a super cute bunny!
Decisions...
Check out this game. Its a phone game, in real-time.. you have to help an astronaut survive on an alien moon. You make decisions and learn about her/him. I LOVED this game. It only costs a dollar, and it actually gets kinda tense, as you'll make a critical decision for her/him, and you'll have to wait in real time for her response whether she/he died or survived.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google&hl=en
EDIT: I should warn, its not a "GAME" per se. Its more like an interactive story, but its really well done.
There are some good games on mobile but the problem is a lot of them are vastly over shadowed by the popular cookie cutter games.
The mobile landscape is in general a lot different from the traditional console experience. I'd argue most people play mobile games to fill in time while on a bus or whatever so games have to be structured around short bursts that feel satisfying. How much progress can you do in 5 minutes of Zelda vs something like a F2P game that instantly rewards you for just logging in regularly.
There's also the problem that due to the way Android/iOS gets updated certain games stop working after updates or new requirements (permissions, security, privacy policy) that requires devs to constantly maintain a game. Something like this is better funded by a continuous source of income. There's even apps I bought that the version I bought turned into a "legacy" version and the new version has ads or other things that you cant remove.
There's also this theory that I have that original Android users have broken this model for everyone and led to the popularization of this model. Basically the theory behind it is the original Android users were a lot more techsavy and pirated a lot of apps. Forcing devs to add ads or other revenue streams (IAP, subscriptions). Hell theres a work out app I was looking at that was subscription based.
Still though, there is one game I heavily recommend that used the phone "short burst" of satisfaction very well as its like an idle game that you do one thing and then wait for a few hours to complete the task.

I really like it, It manages to look completely original but also somehow mixed with a puzzle game and one of those horror text based games like Lifeline I think I would enjoy it so, why did you choose to develop this type of game?
Is this the 'Lifeline' you're talking about?
I've never been to the Full-Indie meetup, so I don't know what the culture is. That said, you should be able to tell someone, "I want to make something like this. I will pay you X dollars." Having a business plan is nice (and good for you), but only really useful to your partner if you're planning to split the profits.
Alternatively, I'd suggest looking into things like Unity, GameMaker, etc... This looks like a very simple game and you could probably figure out the technical side of it pretty quickly.
Lifeline is more like a text adventure with choices and not an RPG, but it is one of my favorite games that I have played this year. Basically it is about you getting a radio transmission from "somewhere" in space, and a space cadet named Taylor is asking you for help after being stranded on some foreign planet.
There are many different endings, and you are basically trying to save Taylor and get him/her back to Earth. And of course it seems impossible, and the ending is really hard to get. But if you like sci-fi/fantasy/space/text adventures, I would definitely recommend it. And it's crazy how attached I got to the well being of a fictional character. It sends you text alerts in real time, so Taylor will say something like 'I better recharge for a few hours and go to sleep', and you will get an alert like 7 hours later. Makes it very realistic and it had me worrying about how Taylor is doing throughout my day... once you get an ending, you can of course speed up gameplay and go through different routes which is also a pretty neat feature.
Lifeline was pretty enjoyable for me.
I really enjoyed how Lifeline used the phone to its advantage https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google
I believe it's Lifeline
Edit: Here's a link
Could it be Lifeline? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google
So this reminded me of the mobile game Lifeline. It's definitely worth checking out.

I agree that in general, I tend to look right through these games to see only the mechanics behind them. Many have lost their magic.
The one thing that keeps me going in any genre - connection to the characters. Do I care about their story? Do I sympathize with their fight? Their plight? If so I'm all into it. Otherwise not really.
Tomb Raider (the first reboot) was a good example. I don't know why but I could really get down with the vengeful "FU I'm getting out of here at all costs" mentality Lara took on. Watching her evolve into this badass was awesome.
Skyrim is another one. If I create a player, and come up with a backstory I can stand behind, I'm really into it. As soon as I start to stray from the character's purpose/traits? Instantly lose interest.
FPS are similar. I had a lot of fun with Wolfenstein The new Order. Felt like I was behind a very noble cause against a very real enemy. Other FPS's? meh.
Doom is one where all the rules go out the window, because the action is just stupid fun. It's mindless, it's visceral and on some primal level is just plain perfect.
If you're looking for something new, branch out into genres you aren't used to. Try a 4X RTS, or jump into a classic point and click adventure like Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis. Hell I've even been playing games like Lifeline, where you are carrying on a instant message with a distant space traveler on your phone. Sometimes you have to wait hours for the character to sleep, or do something. It's really a novel idea.
Other options - go back and replay Half life and Half Life 2. It will amaze you just how good the storytelling is even in dated games. That's what's missing in so many recent ones.
Try Prey - it's a modern day System Shock. On that topic, try System Shock 2. It's old, but is the granddaddy of immersive sims and holds up no problem today.
At the end of the day though - figure what what aspect of gaming still turns your crank, and then find that type of game. My tastes have changed dramatically compared to what I used to like. And I'm still able to enjoy gaming now plenty :) Good luck!
There are plenty of great games on the Play Store like Lifeline, Leo's Fortune, Monument Valley, Creatures Such as We, Fallout Shelter, This War of Mine, but you should get this one on PC if you can, also I believe the one on the Play Store is tablet only, Badland, and etc.
Sounds like the Lifeline series.
The whole lifeline series is gold. Here's the first game in the series
You should try lifeline games https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google
What about text based games such as the lifeline series? Mostly reading and making simple choices. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google

Lifeline is awesome!
The character's name was Taylor, and apparently its gender is revealed in a later installment of the series. But here's the Wiki: https://lifelinegame.fandom.com/wiki/Taylor
And the game: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threeminutegames.lifeline.google&hl=es

Sounds like Lifeline or something similar by that dev.
I genuinely was impressed by that little experience even after the first chapter. I loved Lifeline (Android/iOS) so this really clicked well with me in that vein of influencing a story in a very small way. Reminds me of those Choose Your Own Adventure books from when I was a kid. I remember one that was based on Super Mario Bros and it actually had you keep up with an inventory and stuff for some decisions. I could see things like this being really fun if fleshed out.
Completely surprised me this was as interesting as it was at all and I can definitely imagine it being popular for exactly what you lads did: sitting around and playing it together, having a laugh and imbibing of whatever substance is legal for you to enjoy :D I think what surprised me the most about this one was that you were a part of the narrative which I was expecting more a disconnected narration position. Was very novel.
EDIT:
I wrote this post at the end of the first chapter, so I guess most of what I said was mentioned by them at the end. Oh well, great minds or some such cliched nonsense I suppose lol
Was it possibly Lifeline?
Are these linked?
Seems like the first, second and the fifth are the ones to go for..

Lifeline is very similar when it comes to the story. Also great if you like The Martian (the book/movie).
It might not be that spooky but check out Lifeline.
The Lifeline series should definitely be on here!
