This is alphacross for Android, right?
If so, the yellow triangles indicate: (i) error checking was turned on when an incorrect letter was in this square, or (ii) this square was empty or incorrect when solve square/word was used.
Yeah, it's the same as alphacross, I presumed: syndicated version available freely, daily available with subscription?
I wonder what will happen to the availability of the syndicated .puz once this is over. I guess they'll also go the way of the dodo, but a few weeks later...
I read somewhere (can't recall) that Sheffer and Joseph have stopped, but I still get them daily via Alphacross. Not sure what's going on.
I haven't done the Jonesin' for a while, but looking at this past Thursday: you're absolutely right. It's a wide open grid, more difficult than expected.
I'll do some older ones and try and calibrate the rating a bit.
Thanks a lot!
I use alphacross. Fetches you a lot of puzzles from different sources. No subscription requires for most sources. You can also import .puz files if you have any. Totally good app.
I have Android smartphone but I'm sure these apps are also available for iOS.
Alphacross has the LA Times daily crossword and the Wall Street journal daily crossword.
There is also Crosswordfrom redstone games that has a variety of difficulty levels. Most of those puzzles are made by people who edit the NYT crosswords too, so there is that!
It's called Alphacross and it's free, although some of the crosswords require a paid subscription (I don't get those). There's a choice of 9 daily, 4 weekly and 1 biweekly that you can have pushed to your device.
It's pretty decent, granted that I have it installed on my tablet rather than my phone, so I can't speak to how usable it is on a tiny screen.
I'm a big fan of alphacross, which supports these file types. So does Shortyz.
Both are often recommended in 'best app' threads.
Sorry, you're right - I actually forgot that I'd switched to a different app! The one I use is alphacross - does everything Shortyz does and more.
For a nice, lightweight crossword app that doesn't require payment or show ads, Alphacross. Gives you the daily crossword puzzles of the LA times, USA today, and Universe in a nice tight UI. Best of the lot I've used, by a long margin.
While I think most subscription-based crosswords are worth the money, if you're struggling financially you have an incredible amount of options.
For the NYT crossword specifically, look for an app (e.g. Android's alphacross) that will get you the syndicated crossword for free (so the same crosswords, but 5 weeks late).
Many apps will also get you a load of other premium quality free crosswords, such as USA Today, Universal, LA Times, etc. The aformentioned alphacross or Xword, just to name two apps.
You can also move away from mainstream crosswords to the indie stuff, which you may even prefer. Matt Gritzmacher's daily email list is an excellent source filled with excellent crosswords.
The indie mainstay The American Values Club crossword, is also worth a look. They currently offer a trial subscription. If you like it and really can't afford a subsription, get in contact with them: they often have some subscriptions available for this situation, gifted by other subscribers.
Not right now; like I said, I like Alphacross on Android
Alphacross - Multiple crossword sources, updated daily.
I'm liking Alphacross by Akop Karapetyan. It has a no-fuss interface and good automatic download feature.

Like you I started looking for the same. Here is what you need to do - Get Alphacross.
Dictionary.com uses a crossword source called "Universal Daily"
Its actually a default subscription in the alphacross app. I unsubscribed from the others LA Times and something else.
Now every morning I just get the Dictionary.com crossword and a few days later get to see Egg man try it.
Which OS?
alphacross is a great app, assuming you're on Android.

Alphacross is the only one I've found which is good enough, but I would love to have one for my local language too.
