You can subscribe to a daily email for your field of interest. There is also an arxiv app for Android you might want to check out.

1. The app uses the "http://export.arxiv.org/api/query" endpoint (which, AFAIK it is the only way to search papers externally), so it might not go through the same implementation as arXiv's experimental search feature.
2. The tab pattern is a pretty common one in material designed Android apps, in which the tabs are decoupled from the contents of the toolbar (an example of this is the Google Play app), so I believe the way it is designed is pretty standard
3. That is a good idea, filtering through the downloaded papers can be quite valuable when they start piling up
4. (from your first edit). Noted. Yes, that feature could be built as of now with the current information given by the API
5. (from your second edit). Thanks for this idea as well. It could be very well be a useful feature. An already existing arXiv Mobile does something similar, in which you can place a widget on your home screen and see how many new papers are in your field of interest.
