I think this is related to the way bluetooth operates, though I don't know of an exact way to change it.
I've noticed that if I play music and close everything out, starting a car and auto connecting to bluetooth will relaunch what was last played, no matter if it's been closed down.
I can think of 3 options, but I'd hope there's something better (and note ~~you~~ your friend may want to test these first before assuming they work):
Play something else after research. Maybe your umm friend should get in the habit of playing a relaxing music playlist after his umm research. This will then be the last played item and should be the media to autoplay when connecting via bluetooth.
Disable bluetooth media. Go to your bluetooth settings (in Android), hit the gear icon next to your car's bluetooth device, uncheck "Media Audio." This fully disables the audio, so you would have to turn this back on whenever you wanted to play music in the car.
Try an app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=maderski.bluetoothautoplaymusic&hl=en to force a particular app to play when bluetooth connects.
Okay legit advice, if you have an Android phone there is an app called Bluetooth Autoplay Music. You can set it to start playing whatever you were playing when your phone connects.

All I want is for my Bluetooth music to autoplay when devices connect without having to wake/unlock/interact with my phone.
Apparently this has somehow become difficult.
On my Pixel 2 XL with the old Google Play Music app + the old Llama app (now discontinued), it worked every time (car, headphones, speaker). The phone was NOT rooted as it was a Verizon device and while I owned it, nobody had managed to root the Verizon version.
On my Pixel 4a 5G from Google (also not rooted) + YouTube Music, I can't seem to get it to work more than 10% of the time.
I've been a Google Music subscriber since the $8/mo promo days, though I'm not sure that matters.
I just tried this autoplay app. No good.
I also have used the successor to Llama, Automate, and that doesn't reliably launch + play either.
I've...
Checkout the app Bluetooth Autoplay Music. With this app you can choose the app to automatically open or start playing music with whenever you connect to an audio source vis Bluetooth.
I had previously used tasker to connect to my stereo but i couldn't get it to work when i changed to Spotify. Someone suggested the following app and it works perfectly. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=maderski.bluetoothautoplaymusic
I'm still not sure why connecting to bluetooth won't auto play music, but I think I might've found an app that does what I'm looking for: Bluetooth Autoplay Music.
I'm using this. It can send a play command to a few different players. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=maderski.bluetoothautoplaymusic
