i've settled on the Mastersoft one
why? mainly because i like how it looks. there are lots of settings for board and pieces. here's how i have it atm . p. simple and clean, there is another piece set i like more but i can't differentiate the pawns and bishops as easily in it
it will automatically scale up your opponent as you win games. i've only just started using it, have had a few games so i'm playing an ELO900
there are Hints and a tutor mode if you don't really know what you're doing and the engine seems pretty solid
i used to use Chess Free by Ai factory. it's pretty good but ugly as shit, you can set the pieces and board but the boarder and all the shit outside the board always looks the same. also has a tutor, but doesn't have the same range of difficulties or auto scaling
for puzzles i like chess tactics pro. gives you 2 daily puzzles of three different difficulties in addition to a constant puzzle packs (currently 150 easy, 100 intermediate, 50 difficult)
really good for when you don't want a full game or for trying to think about things differently...
the chess.com app is alright but they really hustle you for money to use all the features
