Here's the link to C2 - If people want to check it out
(I wrote that game)
I'm working on a new game called 'Heroism' which has some similarities, but is not an idle game..
Link to that one: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.minmaxia.heroism
It is CLICKPOCALYPSE II (source: I wrote this game).
The above screenshot is from the mobile version.

I wrote an Idle RPG / Incremental Game for Android called CLICKPOCALYPSE II.
You could play that one. No microtransactions, just a few lovely ads. But who doesn't like watching those, am I right?
(The ads are 100% optional)

I added Internationalization to my game, CLICKPOCALYPSE II.
Many awesome people were willing to spend quite a lot of time translating the game into their language.
Here's the non-English speaking country breakdown for active installs of the Android version of my game:
I'd recommend attempting to crowd source your translation. I was amazed by how many people were willing to do it. My game ended up supporting lots of languages.
Note: Since these are Android numbers, and the Google Play Store is blocked in China, the numbers are a little deceptive. A non-Android list would possibly feature China near the top.
You are making sense. The whole "idle" game scene is very hit and miss. I wouldn't usually recommend any of them to anyone since in the end they are all very shallow. However, since you asked, check out CLICKPOCALYPSE II. A mobile, idle/incremental RPG. I've been having fun with it during work breaks.
The dev recently came out with an Android version of it too, and it's slightly updated. There should be a link to it in the sidebar of the subreddit here /r/Clickpocalypse
Edit: I went and found the link to the Android game, here it is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.minmaxia.c2
Clickpocalypse II is a nice idle RPG. Game is completely free, no IAPs, no forced ads, just has an option where you can choose to watch an ad to give your party a buff.
Check out Clickpocalypse. It's really setup for what you are describing. You setup a party and they go adventuring. You can check back every once in awhile and equip items, level up, pick skills, buy cleared dungeons to turn them into farms, etc. I know the title implies you tapping a lot, but that's just if you want to use the spell scrolls that drop. You don't have to do that at all, although they are nice on bosses.
It's completely free. There are optional ads that give you buffs, but they really are entirely optional.
What I started playing after finishing home quest is a idle rpg called clickpocalypse II link to play store
What I love about it and what makes it similar to home quest, is that it's made by one person and does not rely on in-app purchases.
It has its own style that took some time time for me to get into it. It has its own unique game pace and let's you experiment with finding the best party comp for efficient grinding. Very fascinating to me, nice art style and interface.
Edit: another positive thimg: to complete all achievements you need more then a few weeks. Keeps you busy for a while!
I had some fun with Clickpocalypse II. I don't think there's much of a story, though. I wrote this description earlier in the thread: Completely free, no IAP, there are optional ads that give you a temporary buff. Completely optional and you don't have to use them. Game plays fine offline.
You create a party of heroes and send them off. They'll go out and try to clear dungeons. I would just check back every once in awhile and the game would figure out what had happened during that time. I think the default time limit was up to two hours, but it could be upgraded to a longer time. The game can be in the background or closed and it will still work, as it's based on time passed.
You level up heroes, pick skills/talents, equip items, sell items, buy cleared dungeons for gold - which turns them into "farms" that earn you a second currency that's based on number of defeated monsters, get access to new areas, select permanent upgrades that exist between multiple play throughs, etc.
If your party makeup isn't working, you can restart. But if you beat everything you can unlock new hero types. You can then either make a new party or continue into a harder game with your current team.
You can optionally watch and cast spells from scrolls that they find, but you really don't have to. I think that's where the "Click" in the title comes in. I went through the vast majority of the game without manually casting spells. Sometimes I'd check back in and they'd all be getting knocked out constantly by a boss, so I'd fire some spells to help move them along.
This might not be quite what you are looking for (it isn’t like the Sims at least) but I thought of it reading your post: Clickpocalypse 2. I’m on an iPad so this is my attempt to post a link to the Google store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.minmaxia.c2&gl=US You choose character classes but after that don’t have much control. You watch them fight monsters and clear dungeons and castles, and you can help with potions and scrolls, and upgrade their abilities/stats.
Another person mentioned Heroism and I think this might be similar but I haven’t tried that one, just heard of it before.
Do you mean https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.minmaxia.c2 on mobile? or http://minmaxia.com/c2/ for the browser based version? If yes, this is a solid game that I really enjoyed and am now dowloading on android XD

CLICKPOCALYPSE II is a great example that you can have both and let people choose. Landscape games are great to play on a tablet.
It's a little bit of effort to maintain both, but Unity natively supports multiple layouts and if you plan to release the game to other platforms some time in the future(such as web and pc/mac), it's well worth investing the time to have this flexibility.
Also it depends on the game. Idle dungeon walkers and anything that requires a lot of space works great in landscape, clicker heroes/adcap clones work better in portrait. And this probably should be
There's one on Android called Clickpocalypse 2 that requires interaction only to apply upgrades. You can use scrolls to help your adventurers, but don't have to -- they'll eventually win any fight. There's also a "Pity" button that comes up if they take too long, but again not necessary.
You could just fire it up, wait for your offline time to count the rewards, collect everything, then sign off. Or sit and watch your party kill monsters. There are benefits to being active, but you'll make progress even if you don't.
Clickpocalypse II Does not have involuntary pop up or banner adds. Rather it has only voluntary adds. That is you watch them to get free ingame loot/money and they are in a seperate menu. It is a very addicting old school RPG as a idleRPG. I can't stop playing it. It is also free.
I made:
CLICKPOCALYPSE - This is in The Plaza.
CLICKPOCALYPSE II web, Android, iOS. This is in The Plaza
BASIC - This is added to The Plaza.
BASIC II - A less good sequel to BASIC, I've never added this to The Plaza because it's not very fun. Seems fundamentally flawed to me.
MINMAXIA - An unfinished and kinda broken WebGL prototype thing I was working on before I discovered Cookie Clicker and fell in love with incremental games. Not really applicable for The Plaza.
Currently, I'm working on a new mobile game that is a non-idle RPG + incremental game hybrid.
How about Clickpocalypse 2 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.minmaxia.c2&hl=en
Currently hooked on Clickpocalypse II. It's an idle RPG with a bit of interaction, no annoying clicking (despite its name), and optional ads that unlock temporary bonuses. I played through a few times before on an old device but I lost my save. It's been fun unlocking all of the classes again though.
I've heard good things about Space Colonizers, but right now it's mind-numbingly boring. It's quite a slow-paced idle game, and it encourages tapping to speed your ship up which stays fun for even less time than it takes for the game to load. I haven't got far enough to be able to colonize anything yet, so I'm hoping it'll become more interesting once I can.
Finally, I've been playing through Stickman Dismounting which is unsurprisingly similar to the Dismount series. You push a stick man down hills and off other obstacles in order to cause as much damage to him as possible. Damage caused gives you currency, which you can then use to buy new levels, vehicles, obstacles and even new stick men. It's mindless and there's no way to really lose, but striving to complete the optional challenges is fun while watching TV. It randomly shows ads every now and then but you can instantly back out of them, and you can choose to watch video ads to gain less currency than you would probably otherwise gain if you actually played for those 30 seconds.
I am currently writing a dungeon crawing ARPG/Incremental. Months away however. screenshot.
You could play my older game, CLICKPOCALYPSE II (web version, android version ). Kill lots of monsters and go up levels. No blacksmithing however.
Had fun with this one for a bit:

CLICKPOCALYPSE II or just "idle rpg" genre

Clickpocalypse 2 is a really fun idle game.
Same thoughts
Look at the auto-game-play that Clickpocalypse2 has
I played Clickpocalypse II as an idle game. I'd just check in every once in awhile and level up characters, equip some items, buy some upgrades, etc.
You create a party from a small pool of options. As you play more, you unlock new classes for future playthroughs. You get the option of starting with a new party or continuing into a new game+ mode with your current party.
When you leave it or close the app for awhile, it will calculate what happened while you were gone when you get back. You can upgrade the time period.
There are spell scrolls your party will find that you can "click" to help out, but I rarely used them. Occasionally I'd check back and they'd be stuck on a boss, so I'd help zap it.
The game is completely free with no IAP or forced ads. There are completely optional ads you can choose you view that will give your party a buff. Sub: r/CLICKPOCALYPSE
Another one I played mostly idle is Soda Dungeon, but the app needs to be active. So if you can't leave your phone running on your desk or something, it may not work for you.
Early in the game you get the option to auto battle. So you just setup a team and let them go to work. Then later you can get the loot, upgrade your base, etc.
The game is completely free. There are IAPs to unlock some things faster, but they are unnecessary. There was an optional ad banner you could turn on that would give a bonus. Again, optional.
Note that when I played there were two bosses that you needed to fight manually as they required special tactics to defeat. After you beat one, you can just set the start point past them and let the auto fight go back to work.
Edit: also check out https://www.reddit.com/r/incremental_games . There is a lot of different idle, incremental, and clicker games in the lists on the side bar.
This might not be exactly what you want, but it's completely free, so worth trying it out: Clickpocalypse II. It's a good combination of an incremental game and an idle game. This doesn't have the programming aspect, but it might scratch the itch you're trying to scratch a little bit.
You create a party of heroes and send them off. They'll go out and try to clear dungeons. I would just check back every once in awhile and the game would figure out what had happened during that time. As I said, the game is completely free. There is no IAPs, no stamina/energy system limiting play time. There is a screen you can optionally access to watch an ad to give your party a temporary buff, but it's really optional. No ads will pop up or anything, they only exist in that one area if you want to manually start one.
Edit: this plays fine offline.
You might find some other games over at r/incremental_games, they have a big list of games linked in the side bar.
Check out CLICKPOCALYPSE II, also a browser version. I've been having fun with it lately.
Have you tried CLICKPOCALYPSE II?
Found myself constantly returning to Clickpocalypse 2 after playing other idles
imo it's the only real idle RPG
Well then, allow me to make your day!

Edit Clock: link You can use this clock if you want to have a different clock widget. Limited customization but good for beginners.
