If you're able to get in on the beta, Cluttr is an in-the-works awesome looking alternative. It's still in early development, but the Dev /u/Multimoon is an awesome dude who says the goal is to be better than Quickpic eventually. It's come a long way since I first joined the beta, (despite some rough ground) and I'm using it more than my stock gallery at this point!
Cluttr is gaining momentum. Dev is aiming to make it the spiritual successor to Quickpic/piktures.
It's early days, but he's definitely on track.
I've been using Cluttr on and off. It keeps getting better, but still lacks some functionality that I need, such as gif support.
No idea how the iOS photos app looks like.
Somehow I think Google Photos is most likely what you want.
Two others not yet mentioned:
Simple Gallery - more like material-like. Has a become a popular QuickPic alternative after it turned into shit.

Vision Gallery (in beta) and am keeping an eye on the progress of Cluttr

Cluttr, while in beta is coming along nicely as a fast gallery app

Cluttr is pretty great alternative.
I've been dabbling with this one called Cluttr.
Very clean and simple. Still in beta though.

Only used it briefly before finding Simple Gallery, but it is in development so it may be improved now.
