The app is Dioptra. It relies on sensors found in smartphones which are accurate enough to demonstrate the effect.
photos are generally taken through the middle of the pane where the distortion is minimal.
I owe you no favors.
Edit to add: you can see the android pitch/roll values via the "GPS Status" app. On my phone, it consistently reads 000/000 when flat on a level table, and shows tilts of around 1 degree when I stick an envelope under one end or side of the phone.
Next time your on a flight, have an so like dioptra installed... Really nice way to visually disprove Dubay's second proof.
Looking for something like dioptra?
Didn't see any mention so - before over investing in skis consider the most important set up: Beacon, Probe, Shovel and the knowledge to use it when shit goes sideways. Because of our dry climate, and typically unstable Oct Snow base (possibly Sep this year) - the CO mountain ranges are more prone to avalanches than anywhere else in the world. There are no black and white equations or solutions in the back country. So, critical thinking, group decision making, confident execution and solid knowledge base are paramount to backcountry skiing in CO. A static goal I always keep in mind - have the most fun possible in the parameters of safe and sound decision making. And it doesn't always work out that way!
Here are some tools to help you get started:
Av 1 Certification - get as much education as you can. There are some free sources, but it doesn't compare to field work with a professional guide.
CAIC - They will start updating this as soon as the season gets started with daily av conditions and forecasts. I read it every day in the winter.
Dioptra - Or similar tool for measuring pitch of slope. Eventually you will want to upgrade
Caltopo - Or something similar for route planning and GPS
Good luck, stay safe!
