well if you like to do pixel art, dotpict is a great simple little app for that. not really sure if it's a not well known app or not.

I highly recommend dotpict! It's super easy to use and has a really cute built in game. It's got some solid features and as far as I know, is completely free and ad-free.

I used the Dotpict to make these on my phone :)
not exactly the same, but https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dotpicko.dotpict is a very good pixel art editor (reminds me of mspaint)
Drawn in Dotpict for Android while I was on the train.
dotpict is the only suitable iPhone pixel art app I know of that still works. (it's on Android as well, for whomever that's relevant). If the dotpict hashtag on Twitter can be taken at face value, it's capable enough. The way it works reminds me of drawing on a graphics tablet (without screen).
If you have an iPad, I would also recommend giving Pixaki and Pixely a try. Pixaki has a more professional and easier to grasp interface of the two, but lacks (as of its 2.x release) tools for lines, shapes, and animation. Pixely is more awkward to use, but features more tools (although possibly less capable tools — lacking stroke width), including the ability export animations. Having said that, I've been testing the Pixaki 3.0 beta, and it does feature animation and proper shape tools in an all-around much better put together package.
As a last resort, and also if you have an iPad, you could try Astropad and use you iPad as a visual graphics tablet and use whatever app you want.
