I actually play mahjong when I feel the itch for it on an android game, it's the only one I know with HK rules (this one specifically). It's pretty great, complete with awkward sassy cantonese voice overs lol
If your parents play the HK version like my mom. This is the one she use to play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.recax.mjclub
I believe its offline only, but it keeps her busy :D
You will learn faster by playing in a simulated setting rather than getting a course, since games played in real life can take a while, especially if people are not super familiar with the game already. As far as scoring goes, it's best to just look at the wiki page on how to assemble a hand that you can win with, then let the more experienced players count your score for you.
I like this app for playing mahjong:
This app in particular can teach you how to assemble hands, but the basic gist is similar to assembling a poker hand - you want trios and quads of the same suit and number, OR a three card/same suit straight. You can assemble your hand by taking cards that other players "dump" when they draw from the stack, but there are requirements. You can take cards only IF you can assemble a straight/trio/quad with them. The further requirement is that you can only take a "dump card" for a straight if the player before you is dropping the card. This action is announced as "sheung" as the player drops the card. You can take a dump card for a trio/quad from ANY player dumping it by calling "poong" after they dump it. After you have assembled a combination (straight/trio/quad), you must display it for the table to see and leave it visible.
You start with 13 tiles, and whenever you pick up a card (whether it's from a dump or from the draw pile), you have to drop one. The goal is to assemble a hand by creating three-card combos, then finishing off with a two-pair of the same card.
Anyway try playing the game first on the app - it is all in Chinese, but it is not too hard to navigate. After it loads, click the first menu option to enter the game. There are three levels of scoring - I suggest you pick the North Point (farthest right) level, since it has the lowest scoring requirement to win a round. Practice and learn the patterns of how to play!
If you have any questions (bearing in mind that I myself don't know everything about the game or scoring), PM me or just comment below haha.
Yeah, you really have to skim through those bs matching ones. This is one I play on Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.recax.mjclub
