Go on the play store or what the apple one is and search "learn kana" and you'll get a billion apps that will help you with quizzes or charts or whatever. They're nice because you can just use them when you have even just a minute. That's what helped me. I used this from the play store, though there may be a better choice, it will get the job done.
Just in case he decides to implode his post:
> Hello, got a question: I have spent the last few days with Genki, but I feel it's not for me, so I turned to MemRise, as some courses tend to have some nice mnemonics. Has anyone done both these courses?

> Right now, my main focus is reading and writing hiragana and katakana. Not interested (for now) in premade sentences, like greetings and how to order food. They can come later, as I feel I need a solid foundation. Which of the two courses do you think is better for me?

"not a bad grasp of japanese" to "no phrases or sentences because they're too hard" and "i need a solid foundation"
I have used TenguGo Kana for a bit now, and it helped a lot while I was learning kana.
I don't know that you need words right now.
Mnemonics - http://kidspicturedictionary.com/japanese/hiragana-katakana-mnemonics/
Matching Exercise - http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/sheaa/projects/genki/hiragana-timer.html
Test Drills - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tengulogi.tengugo.jp_kana&hl=en
And you should do your own writing drills. It should take you a week tops if you don't devote much time to it. Really you can learn it just doing the last one (testing drills) and writing drills. But maybe the mnemonics and the matching will be more fun for you.
