Actually, Android recently added the ability to customize the fallback fonts. If you go into languages&input and add Japanese as a secondary font, it will prioritize Japanese style over Chinese.

This app requires root but you can see in the patch notes:
>This is no longer required on Android 7.0+. Instead add Japanese to your language list in Settings > Languages & input > Languages to show the correct Kanji across all apps.
If you are seeing Chinese versions of kanji, this is not a keyboard issue, but an issue with the way Android chooses fonts.
You can try setting your system language to Japanese, or you can try KanjiFix if you have a rooted phone.
If you have a rooted phone, the easiest solution is to install this app
The next easiest thing is to set your phone to Japanese. Plus immersion if good for you!
The last option is to add a custom font to your Anki decks. Instructions here
Kanji Fix will fix this if you have a rooted phone.
Actually there is a normal (though, root needed) app that changes the kanji to Japanese:

Hope this helps!

You've noticed the wonderful problem with Han unification on Android.
Basically the Chinese and Japanese characters that represent the same things are stored with the same code-point in Unicode even if the same character look slightly different in Chinese vs in Japanese.
So if you use a Chinese font a lot of kanji will look slightly "wrong" while the same thing will look correct if you have a Japanese font.
The problem (for us) on Android is that they have decided to use a Chinese font as standard (maybe because there are a lot more Chinese people in the world than Japanese?).
There is no good solution for this but there are some workarounds:
I'm using method 4 and 5.
By the way, there was a thread on this on WaniKani not long ago: https://www.wanikani.com/chat/kanji-and-japanese/10921
