Now that you mention it that is pretty annoying. At the moment I'm using multiple resources. For writing using the Kana Workbook from www.coscom.co.jp/ Printed out the katakana and hiragana workbooks to memorize the vowels and consonants and get the writing practice going.
For basic language education I found https://www.coscom.co.jp/learnjapanese101/learnjapanese104.html Which is teaching me the sentence structures and basic stuff like that. Probably will read more about formal and informal words here eventually. Taking each section slow.
The other resource is an app from ATi studios I believe called Mondly. Language app that works as kind of a game.

That's the one that showed various basic sentences and had you translate the meanings. Does it both ways, it will show you japanese and you to translate to English, or shows you English and you have to translate to japanese. Also does it via hiragana katakana a few times too. Levels you up and such, even has microphone support where you have to say the next line of a conversation or say a word to pass on. Pretty cool. It showed nomu and nomimasu but never explained the contextual difference of the two styles.
Darn
I guess you can try Mondly

But I can't vouch for it's effectiveness
