Welcome to programming. Take a seat, it'll take a while before it makes sense. But it will. If you're having trouble with basics and happen to have an Android phone, try this app. It walks you through basics nicely.
Overall, javascript is a higher-level language than, say, C, so it may be the level of abstraction that gets you confused. Just get yourself accustomed to the syntax and basic control structures, then simply analyze the code you encounter and it should be good.
There are apps on Android/IOS which can help. Search for JavaScript on them. One such example https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sololearn.javascript
Back in about 1999, I was interested in a singer from the 60's and wanted to make a website to post stuff about him so I just started learning back then. I tried to do an online degree twice but couldn't get past the first semester because it was so boring and tedious. I wanted to 'build stuff' and so I did. The landscape is very different now. There's so many avenues now that it's hard to say where to start. It depends if you're more a 'design' person or a 'logic' person or a bit of a blend of both. If you're more logic oriented, then learning a backend oriented language like php, ruby, python are probably good places to start. But there's also nothing wrong with start in javascript either, which can be used as both a frontend and backend language.
It also depends on your learning style - I mostly did frontend design / installing modules until I learned python around 2005/6. I set myself a goal to learn at least 10-15 minutes of python on a day and I would read a book on my phone (often sitting on a toilet) and try to use ideas from it in my day to day job as a Systems Admin.
The great thing now is there's so many resources available for different learning styles all on different platforms. You can quite easily learn ost of the basics while you're waiting for a bus or doing whatever.
Found one app to learn JavaScript. I hope, it will help you to learn online.
