I have a cheap smartwatch which vibrates for an alarm I also use an LED alarmclock app on my android phone. Both work well.

Wife uses this alarm, it did go off wrong once on vacation and I want to say it was timezone related. Slowly puts the screen to white beforehand to mildly awaken you, good for deep sleep/shift workers.

I've never used artificial light to wake me up. But, if you want to do so, here are my thoughts.
A)
You can use a desk lamp and an electrical time switch. The time switch turns the lamp on. Where I live, time switches are sold at dollar stores and hardware stores.
(If you plan to use a time switch with a compact-fluorescent or LED light bulb, this may not work. Check your time switch's instruction manual, or ask your time switch's manufacturer whether or not it will work.)
Try a lamp and time switch for a few days. See whether or not the setup is bright enough for you.

But the ideal luminous wake-up procedure should mimic the way that the universe's Creator has designed things. It should start about an hour before you're supposed to wake up and light up gradually.
There are various luminous alarm clock apps out there. If your devices are Android devices, try Light Alarm Clock or Glimmer. Most tablets can probably get brighter than most cellphones.
For more lumens, use a "smart light bulb". Nowadays you can buy such bulbs for as little as US$15 per bulb.
(Color-adjustable "smart light bulbs" might not be available for only US$15 per bulb. Still, if you want red light at bedtime on a tight budget, there may be budget options available.)

I'm curious. Where you live, how late is sunrise in December?
