I'd like to recommend Long Music Player. It's a music player with a bunch of special features that kick in when a track is over a certain (user defined) length. So instead of having a separate app for audiobooks, I now only need one for music and long audio files. Great.
Plus it's one of the few music apps that works properly with the music controls on my Garmin Vivosmart, which is an extra bonus.
Long Music Player
The dev posted it here a few a weeks ago. It's fantastic for listening to audio books and podcasts. I use it everyday.

Really cool Ambient sound app
MangaBlitz is a really nice Manga reader. But it's not on the play store.

Another cool app I found here. Basically does the clipboard sharing feature in pushbullet. But it does it very well.
Best application for fine grained seeking I've come across is Long Player. Not one but two slide and seek bars (display of the fine grained control one can optionally toggled on/off).
Hey thanks for linkup. Yeah I'm going to add Chromecast support to Long Player . Bit unclear from the OP's message, I think he wants audio AND visualisations to the TV?
I have really started to like Long Music Player and the developer /u/emile_b is very active on reddit. They even added Android Wear support when I asked that very day. At one point the app is free, but its well worth the money.
Use a player that does this itself
This one
Has a one time fee after trial period but it does what you require
Sure - Long Music Player. I used to use a seperate music player and audiobook player, but this one does both. If a file is over a certain (user definable) length, it remembers the point it was last played from. It's got a ton of other useful features that make it ideal for longer audio files.
Also, if you find you really like audiobooks, you might want to check out Scribd. You pay a monthly subscription, and you can "borrow" as many audiobooks (and ebooks!) as you like. It's relatively cheap ($8.99 a month), and they have a really good selection. Only drawback is you have to use their app to play/read the titles (because of piracy concerns).
Oh, they also do comics and graphic novels too.
LongPlayer is really good, one of the few with a slider for skipping forwards/backwards through long tracks.
Active dev (uses Google+) who is responsive to errors reports and suggestions.
I use Long Music Player it has configurable Rewind and forward buttons. I use 10s (but you can use 30s) rewind and 15s forward.
It has a Sleeptimer and it remembers where you left of.
Its a 14 Day Trial but its worth the 2 Bucks.

Try long music player. The dev posted here not long ago and is meant for long files obviously. Worked well when I tried it but I haven't had any lectures to review regularly to really try it out

Sorry it's not free, at the time of his post he gave out activation codes
Podcast Addict.
I also have (recently released) Long Player point to the folder in which PA stores the downloaded podcasts. I only use PA to download them. I use Long player to actually listen to the podcasts.

EDIT: just checked out BeyondPod. I'm using it instead of Podcast Addict now.
Here's the correct link to the player : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.emtronics.longplay
I've just re-released my music app for free which does this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.emtronics.longplay
You can select your music folders (so you only include the files you want).
The feature you might like is the 'Surprise me' button which allows you generate 1h or 2h of random songs from your music files.

Bad bot! That's not right!
Here's the proper link to Long Player, and to the audiobook version of Mortplayer.
I can't speak for its compatibility with Cardboard but you could give Long Music Player a try. Its my audiobook player of choice, because of its innovative seek bar & has some great visualisations to boot.

I listen to a lot of radio plays, podcasts and audiobooks as well as music, so I've been using Long Music Player for the last wee while, and it's great.
It's not pretty, but it's got special features for long files (hence the name) that make it ideal for me. If a file is over a time limit you set, it automatically saves your place and restarts it from there next time you open it, which is perfect for me. Plus it's got a "fine-tunable" seek bar, which is handy if you ever do lose your place.
I used to use two seperate apps for music and longer audio files, but this one's got the best of both worlds. Plus it works perfectly with the music controls on my Vivosmart watch (a lot of players don't), which is just icing on the cake.
Long Music Player. You pretty much just described this app. Great dev too. He's a redditor and hangs around. I point it to the Podcast Addict folder and I can play all the files from it.

Ya my app does this, 14 day trial if you want to give it a go.

Long Music Player has a 'Jump to Album' for the currently playing song. It has 'Jump to folder' for all playlists also, but I can easily add Jump to Album for those as well
I'll recommend a music player this week, it's Long Music Player, a new addition to the slowly increasing collection of music apps.
what's different about this player is that it can play audiobooks easily, it has a dedicated seeker bar for this that i haven't found anywhere else.
it also has milkdrop animations, you can get this kind of screen while playing, it looks great.
the developer is quick to fix and add features, the app is a must try, i'm sure it'll grow to become one of the top
edit: screenshot was of the first version of the app, there's some changes now!
Long Music Player. Nice and simple. Saves your place in audio files over a certain (user-defined) length.
No love for Long Music Player?
