Υπάρχει app ρε φίλε που βλέπεις πού είναι το λεωφορείο και πότε θα περάσει.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.android.tfa&hl=en&gl=US
Το app δεν λειτουργεί στα νέα λεωφορεία που ήρθαν με leasing από την Νορβηγία γιατί έχουν διαφορετικό hardware/software από το tracking του ΟΑΣΑ.
There is also an official app of the Athens Urban Transport Organization where you can see bus stops near you, routes and bus locations.
There's this app for buses, not completely accurate since it's Greece we are talking about, that gives you an estimate of when the next city bus will arrive at a specific bus station. "OASA Telematics". Could be useful for city exploration https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.android.tfa&hl=el
This pdf will help. Monthly travel cards are at p5.
> Travel cards with the corresponding monthly coupons are available at the ticket kiosks of the Athens Public Transport System. The handling and disposal of the coupons of the travel cards via third parties is not permitted.
Nearly at any Train/Metro station you can get one.
> To issue a monthly or quarterly travel card you need a picture and a valid ID. In cases where there are beneficiaries of reduced fare (students, etc.) the demonstration of the document proving the entitlement to a reduced fare is required.
You can also use the official app to get bus times in Athens. You can find it here for Android. I never noticed but I suppose it has an english interface too. Here is the metro map too. It has pretty high frequency. There is a TRAM too which extends from Piraeus to Sintagma and along the seaside to Voula, but I wouldn't recommend it, as it is full with people at Summer, plus it's really really slow.
The x96 bus from the airport(to Piraeus) uses the highway by the seashore. You can get off at Voula(which is basically the first stop by the sea). Vouliagmeni is a bit further to the south but you can somewhat swim in most spots along the shoreline. Personally i dont like the beaches by the highway but if you are that desperate, sure, go ahead. Those beaches are pretty popular, but i am a snob. Vouliagmeni is better and generally the further you are from the center of Athens, the better.
There is a bus from Voula to Vouliagmeni(122 according to the app) or if you are feeling adventurous, you can always walk. Glyfada is a bit to the north it is also a good place to have a coffee. Generally both Glyfada and Vouliagmeni are great for walks. Glyfada is more upper end shops and cafes/restaurants, Vouliagmeni is more about trees, beaches and small town thingies. You can use a bus to move from Vouliagmeni to Glyfada or get a taxi. Do not get a taxi to or from the airport though, that's expensive.
There is an app for buses
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.android.tfa
It also has english, shows where the buses are, their routes, stops, gives you directions, etc. Also available for iphone and windows mobile. I think this is only for buses and trolleys. It doesnt include the tram(good for travelling up/down on the highway by the seashore) or the subway(best way of travelling to places in Athens).
PPS Glyfada can be kinda expensive.
you can check OASA telematics before leaving your hotel for live location of the bus
The Athens public transport app. Check with your faculty if you are entitled to a student card, then you get 50% off.
Don't direct your open palm to people. This gesture, called Mountza is considered an insult here.
Check xe.gr and spitogatos.gr , if you need to look for a house.
There is r/Greek for Greek learners.
Roam around Anafiotika and the Hill of the Nymphs, they are among the most beautiful walks in Athens.
If you like sweets, try Galaktoboureko and Loukoumades.
I wish you a great time!
The best alternative to "Uber" app is "Beat" (https://thebeat.co/) which is a taxi reservation app. Beat taxis are great. Accurate, clean, polite drivers and great services (some of them have free Wifi). Taxis in Athens are very cheap.
Public transportation is decent. Especially the metro is fast, modern, very clean and accurate.
Also you can use buses (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.android.tfa). Moving around with buses is just ...ok.
If you are American you'll find Athens public transportation system, cheap and easy to use, and the taxis even cheaper than Uber. If you are European, moving around with taxi is a bargain and public transportation bad (except from the metro).
